Ali Bin Abi Talib once said that children should be educated in accordance with the  development of the times. The Ali bin Abi Talib’s statement could be considered as his attention more to the development of human civilization. For that reason, there should be studies focused on the role of educational institutions in facing the challenges of the times. On this stand, the writer raises the existence of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) for being considered to have been able to survive amid the onslaught of civilization increasingly obscuring cultural identity. In addition, this study also aims to identify and discuss the role of pesantren in the modern era. This is a literature study using a descriptive and exploratory approach. It can be concluded that pesantren are non-formal Islamic educational institutions. Pesantren have permanent and distictive methods and learning models. The purpose of pesantren education is the same as Islamic education in general, instilling a sense of virtue, familiarizing themselves with courtesy, preparing for a holy, sincere and honest life entirely. Pesantren could be seen from three aspects: (a) pesantren that are seen from facilities and infrastructures, (b) pesantren that are seen from disciplines taught, and (c) pesantren that are seen from the fields of knowledge.

Abstract: Islamic education institutions in Indonesia face two challenges, namely; internal and external. Internally, Islamic education is faced with the classic problem of the low quality of human resources in education management. The causes include poor quality and education staff development and selectivity of education personnel. Furthermore externally, Islamic education institutions faced three major issues; globalization, democratization, and liberalization. The issue of globalization that is identical with market orientation and mechanism also affects the world of education. That way in education also includes awareness about how to attract and convince the community of the type and model of education. From here, the education world is ready or not ready to be involved in competition to gain public trust. To face these challenges Islamic Education institutions must maximally manage and empower all elements of management in the management of educational institutions. A good understanding of the elements of management can have an impact on the readiness of educational institutions to manage their institutions well in any condition to be the best and foremost. Indonesia is one of the countries that respects the human rights of its citizens. Based on the fundamental constitutional mandate that education is the right of every citizen without exception, one of the indicators is that educational institutions must open opportunities for every citizen. This study aims to evaluate the existing educational facilities in the city of Banjarmasin, precisely some private Islamic Elementary School (MIS). The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. This method aims to describe the situation as a whole and thoroughly related to the selected object. The results of research related to accessibility for people with disabilities still cannot be seen in some of MIS choosen as the object of this study. The results of this study get the fact that all research objects are not friendly to people with dissabilities, such as conventional school steps. Even though the rule of laws is complete, but in fact, the implementation of these laws still encountered some problems until now.  Accessibility for disability is one indicator as a child-friendly school, so, hopefully this research will be a piece of initial information for stakeholders in the Ministry of Religion in improving the quality of essential Islamic education services.

Based on data on the information openness of the education system and educational institutions of Kemerovo Region obtained by means of the integrated monitoring implemented in the region since 2008, as well as on the results of an independent assessment of education quality, the authors analyze the development of informatization processes in the context of ensuring the information openness of the region’s education and its results (on the example of general education institutions) in order to identify possible prospects and improve the activities in question. The eff orts of state, education authorities and regional organizations on informatization have resulted in achieving high values of the indicators of normative, material, HR, programme, and organizational support of information openness. However, the availability of information and services intended for the interaction of all the participants in the educational process presents a problem for a large number of organizations and indicates the failure to fulfi ll the functional tasks of ensuring openness and accessibility of information about an organization. The authors suppose that this makes it possible to determine the further prospects for implementing the regional educational policy in the fi eld of informatization, with an emphasis on eff ective practices of interaction between interested parties and satisfaction of their information needs.
