Abstract English as a lingua franca (ELF) is a recent paradigm in ELT which acknowledges non-native varieties in their own right and NNSs as having their own unique characteristics rather than assessing them against an NS benchmark. Despite the changing needs of today’s English language learners, there is little research on how to integrate ELF into pre-service teacher education programmes and English language teaching practice since there is a theory–practice gap due to lack of clear pedagogical descriptions and concrete classroom-driven data. This study presents an intensive educational model for pre-service teachers aiming to raise their awareness of the pedagogy of ELF, synthesizing theory with practice. It investigates how prospective teachers exposed to the ELF-aware teacher education model integrated ELF into their teaching and their viewpoints about the process. The entire process has been reported to contribute significantly to the participants’ professional development as well as presenting several challenges.

This contribution examines the pro and cons on the English language teaching practice in a non-English speaking country, Congo. It appears that English language is solely taught for examination purposes what is best summarized in terms of eye to read, think to write when the mouth remains shut. Oral communication is in a poor relation in language teaching and learning in Congo. One of the reasons is the inefficiency of the course of English phonetics and phonology at the Teachers Training College coupled with the lack of English linguistic background to prospective teachers.

Poetry has often been neglected as a favorable tool for language teaching. What is more, its role to expand human experience and create language awareness has not been fully realized. As a reaction to often-underestimated value of including literature in the language class, this article proposes a poetry-teaching (POT) framework for language practitioners to bridge the gap between literature and language teaching methodology. Step-by-step procedure followed in the framework aimed at helping prospective teachers incorporate poetry into language teaching, while at the same time offering various materials and activities to be used in their future teaching practices. The proposed framework was presented to 21 student teachers at an English Language Teaching (ELT) department of a state university in Turkey to help them integrate the ideas of using poetry in a micro-teaching context. Prospective teachers acted both as learners and teachers while following the steps of the suggested framework, and reflected on this experience through reflective diaries and stimulated recalls of their teaching performances. They also took part in semi-structured interviews at the end of the study. Qualitative analyses revealed that poetry can have a place in language teaching by using a systematic and guided framework tailored to the features of a language classroom. With the help of the proposed framework, implementing poetry in the language class helped to promote motivation, creativity and self-expression along with multi-skill development and interaction among learners. However, incorporating poetry into the language class was challenging in terms of time and effort required and difficulties in material selection and design. This study suggests that poetry can become part of language teacher education. In this regard, this article proposes implications for teachers and teacher educators for the implementation of poetry in language teaching practice.

Teaching practice is an activity designed to enable students in mastering teaching skills. This activity is very important to improve the ability of prospective teachers, because theoretical knowledge has not been able to equip the teaching practice. The practice of teaching at schools provides a real experience for students in the real class, because theoretical knowledge through the process of learning in the classroom can not equip the teaching practice. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Indonesia Open University (UT) with distance learning system has designed Teaching Practice through Praktek Kemampuan Mengajar (PKM) course with 3 credit score. PKM is implemented in the schools where they teach and are guided by two supervisors. The PKM exam is conducted at the designated centre schools at each UT Regional Office . This study is aimed to evaluate the activities of PKM students of Economic Education Studies Program FKIP UT in UT Regional Office. The study was conducted at 12 UT Regional Office samples involving respondents consisting of UT students and UT Regional Office staff. The results showed the level of independence of students doing PKM was quite high (72%). This level of independence needs to be supported by a 43% improvement in preparation and administrative services at UT Regional Office. In the implementation of teaching practice in schools, in average 53.14% Supervisor 1 and 63.86% Supervisor 2 always provide direction in accordance with UT standards. While 62.5% of Headmaster Sentra has role in accordance with its function.
