scholarly journals Evaluating Nursing Students’ Academic Motivation through Academic Motivational Scale: A Cross-Sectional Study of Two Colleges

Background: Learning is an ongoing process. To achieve desired learning outcomes of the academic journey, students must possess motivation, resilience, and effective communication skills. The positive motivation regarding the academic journey increase students' motivation for learning. This will benefit students to achieve desired results without major obstacles. Objective: To identify the nursing students’ motivation towards their academic journey. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Nursing students of first & second year were invited to participate voluntarily. Informed consent was employed before data collection. Two Nursing Colleges affiliated with Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women Nawabshah were selected as a study site and the duration was from 16th February to 28th February 2021. The convenience sampling technique was used to collect data through a structured, 28-item Academic Motivational Scale. Results: The response rate was of the survey was 100% as all the approached participants responded and completed the survey. The results showed that nursing students were extrinsically motivated (x̅=3.78 & SD =1.192) than internally motivated (x̅ =3.41 & SD=1.128). The main reasons for their extrinsic motivation were to seek a good salary job and live a good life. Conclusion: Students were extrinsically motivated therefore the intrinsic motivation needs to be enhanced through improving the image of the profession among students, making them autonomous, self-directed, and listening to them for understanding their life situations.

OBJECTIVE To determine the awareness and perception of Physical Therapy as a career among the intermediate students of Karachi. STUDY DESIGN It is a cross sectional study. STUDY SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS The settings of this study were two Private and two Government sector Intermediate colleges, offering Pre-medical and participants were students studying in these colleges. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE Non-probability convenience sampling technique. RESULTS Results revealed that only 13.5% of students were well aware of physical therapy as a profession in government and private colleges whereas, 31% in government colleges and 26.5% in private colleges had little knowledge. While 28% government and 30.5% in private were totally unaware of it. 75.7% and 83.5% from government and private sector students responded that physical therapy will be most rewarded in Orthopedic/Musculoskeletal fields respectively. CONCLUSIONS The awareness of Physical Therapy as a career among intermediate students would help in creating more effective marketing strategies. Unfortunately, a small percentage of the students are aware of physiotherapy and the services provided by this profession which implies that there is an urgent need for marketing campaign.

Aims/objectives: Coronavirus pandemic has been declared a health emergency worldwide. Millions of people have been affected by it. The objective of this study was to assess anxiety and depression among people who are confined to their homes due to the covid-19 pandemic so that measures can be taken to reduce the frequency and effects of psychological distress during mass lockdowns in the future.Materials and methods: The study population consisted of educated adults of Rawalpindi and Islamabad who have been under strict lockdown. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used. Informed consent was taken. Data were collected via a questionnaire based on the HADS scale. For data analysis, SPSS version 25 was used.Results: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 615 individuals, out of which 15 did not meet the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The majority were females (80.2%). The average age was 22.6 years. 37.5% were found to have anxiety, whereas 21% had depression. Borderline cases of anxiety and depression were 27.5% and 28.3%, respectively. The frequency of anxiety and depression was found to be higher in females than males, 39.5% vs 29.4%, and 22.4% vs 11.5% respectively. The correlation of HADS scores with other demographic parameters was studied, but no significant relationship was found.Conclusions: The study reveals a high prevalence of anxiety and depression among individuals during lockdowns. The development of a comprehensive educational and emotional support system is required for the improvement of the mental health of individuals.

Introduction: Motivation plays a vital role in learning and is a great enabler as it functions on multiple dimensions and paves way to conquer impediments in the path of success. An attempt has been made through this study to scrutinize the convictions related to motivation and the deployment of strategies in the learning process of students. Aim: To find the relation if any, between academic achievement and the motivation level with the students of College of Medicine, Majmaah University, Majmaah, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out among pre-medical and medical students of Majmaah University. Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) questionnaire was distributed to 250 students who were selected based on simple random sampling. There were 233 students who participated in the study out of which there were 147 males and 86 females who completed the questionnaire. Motivation of student towards education was assessed in three domains, namely Intrinsic, Extrinsic and Amotivation. After ethical approval from institutional review board, questionnaire was distributed and results recorded in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Qualitative variables were represented with frequencies and percentages and quantitative variables with mean and standard deviation. Student’s t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were applied to compare the means. Results: Comparison of motivational scores between students in different years showed no significant difference in the mean scores across all dimensions of motivation except Extrinsic Motivation-Regulation. The mean score of 2nd year students was 16.63 and it increased over the years. The mean score at 6th year was 22.03 and it decreased during internship with mean score of 20.58. Conclusion: The study of various stimulators which affect the learning experience of the student provides good insight on motivation and its influence on academic performances.

The aim of this descriptive cross sectional study was to assess knowledge about breast cancer and breast self examination practices among medical, dental and B.Sc nursing students and to identify the associated factors which influence towards the breast self examination (BSE). The survey was conducted among 220 graduate levels female students by using non probability convenience sampling technique. Mean knowledge about the breast cancer, as indicated by the results were 63.67±16.22, 71 ±18.16 and 76 07 ±18.60 among BDS, B.SC nursing and MBBS students respectively. Similarly mean practices regarding BSE were found to be 34.67 ± 15. 41, 47.85 ±14.08 and 46.76 ±14.77 among BDS, B.Sc nursing and MBBS respectively. Knowledge was less among BDS students whereas, it was found quite higher in MBBS and B.Sc nursing students. Similarly, mean practice in relation to BSE was found to be low in BDS, high in B.Sc nursing, and higher in MBBS students. Overall level of knowledge was found to be mordantly adequate among all disciplines, however practices among them were found to be inadequate. Background: Despite the advancement in malaria treatments and management; malaria morbidity and mortality is still on the increase. This phenomenon has been mostly attributed to the emergence and transmission resistance of the plasmodium parasite to drugs; which is as a result of non-adherence to anti-malaria medication. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess patients’ adherence to anti-malarial medications and the factors influencing their adherence in the Volta regional hospital.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was employed. Convenience sampling technique was used in recruiting respondents. Data were collected within a period of 8 weeks from April to May 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviations which was generated by the use of IBM statistical package for social sciences version 23.Results: The average age of respondents surveyed for this study was 32.27±11.09 ranging from of 19 to 68 years. Majority (51.7%) of respondents were females and 76.7% of them being Christians. The study findings revealed that 36.6% of patient were completely adherent to anti-malarial medication. Over 90% of respondents agreed that the malarial medication had bad taste and it was an unpleasant feeling for them taking it.Conclusions: Poor adherence to antimalaria medications could play a role in the future development of drug resistance. As such, identifying ways to improve anti-malarial compliance will help mitigate drug resistance. Therefore, further studies should be carried out on ways to improve patients’ adherence to antimalarial medication.

Introduction: This study was designed to determine the out of pocket costs (OOPCs) of acute exacerbation of asthma (AEA) in asthma patients attending a public hospital. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was done by interviewing the patients using the convenience sampling technique. Data were obtained based on per episode of AEA. OOPCs were calculated based on direct and indirect costs. A total of 128 patients participated in the study. The data were analyzed with SPSS ver 23. Results: The study group comprised of 88 males (68.8%), 57 (44.5%) singles and 67 (52.3%) less than 40 years of age. There were considerable differences found between the severity levels and lengths of hospital stay towards the OOPCs. Conclusion: The severity of the AEA and length of stay in the hospital increase the per episode OOPCs of AEA among asthma patients.

This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted to find out the views of undergraduate dental college teachers about the PowerPoint presentations as instructional media used by teachers in dental colleges of Bangladesh. The study period was from January 2018 to December 2018. The study was carried out among the teachers of all 4 phases of BDS course of 2 government and 2 non-government dental colleges of Bangladesh. Out of 4 dental colleges, 2 were within Dhaka and 2 were outside Dhaka. The sample size was 100 for teachers. Convenience sampling technique was adopted for data collection. Self-administered semi-structured questionnaires using five points Likert scale were used for collections of data from teachers. The study revealed that 72% teachers consider Eye appealing appearance for choosing PowerPoint slides and 58% teachers did not use master slide. For selection of font style, 67% teacher agreed they consider readability, 88% agreed they consider visibility from last bench of classroom to select font size but 61% teacher disagree that they consider background for selecting font color. The study recommended, during the preparation of a PowerPoint presentation by teachers some areas like using the master slide, background, the number of words and lines need attention. The COVID-19 pandemic may cause a nursing shortage. Prelicensure nursing students who are exposed to high-stress COVID-19 events are related to defective career decision-making. This study validated the COVID-19 attitude scale and clarified how their attitudes about COVID-19 affected their behavioral intentions toward career decision-making. We conducted a cross-sectional study and recruited a convenience sample of 362 prelicensure nursing students from Northern and Central Taiwan. Two measurements were applied, including the Nursing Students Career Decision-making instrument and COVID-19 attitude scale. We used AMOS (version 22.0) to perform a confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach α of the COVID-19 attitude scale was 0.74 and consisted of four factors. The most positive attitude was the nursing belief factor, and the least positive factor was emotional burden. Prelicensure nursing students’ COVID-19 attitudes were significantly positively associated with their career decision-making attitudes and perceived control (ß = 0.41 and ß = 0.40, respectively; p < 0.001). All the key latent variables explained significantly 23% of the variance in the career decision-making behavioral intentions module. In conclusion, the COVID-19 attitude scale is valid. Although the prelicensure nursing students’ COVID-19 attitudes had no direct effect on career decision-making intentions, they had a direct effect on career decision-making attitudes and the perceived control.
