This article appeared on the several sciences border: clinical anatomy, clinical physiology and philology. Accordingly, its authors are a clinician, a teacher of higher education and a philologist. The authors critically analyze some of the Ukrainian (Greek and Latin derivative) terms based on special literature and writing sources, philology works and their own experience. At the same time, they substantiate every nation’s right to introduce terms into their special scientific nomenclature that are more common in this language, folk household, in accordance with their ideas. The authors call for the correction of some Ukrainian and Latin terms indicating inflammation, as well as - to distinguish adjectives in the clinical and anatomical nomenclature of ones that indicate quality from those indicating the relation, belonging to a particular subject, formation, phenomenon. The terms in the Ukrainian language was often formed under other languages influence and sound sometimes wrong, so it makes sense to replace some medical terms with new, correct ones. It seems like some, firmly rooted terms, require some correction. First of all, as already mentioned, those of them that are based on subject analogies (analog terminology). To develop the Ukrainian language in all spheres of science, including medical science language is our duty. And the work on Ukrainian medical terminology improving is a permanent process, as well as the society development in general.

The present time is characterized by an increase in the pace of life, and medicine is no exception. Often, when analyzing the medical literature, specialists are faced with the fact that in different publications almost the same structure has a different name, which causes misunderstanding among specialists in various medical fields. This is especially true for clinicians who use the convenient anatomical names of fundamental scientists such as morphologists. As these names, terms from the International Anatomical Nomenclature are used, along with which, especially in clinical anatomy and medicine, eponymous names are accepted. The use of the latter can also be misunderstood, because eponyms are absent in modern anatomical terminology. However, additional knowledge of eponyms, along with common terms, gives the opportunity to look into the past and honor the memory of those who first described the structures. The paper attempts to systematize the names - eponyms of human heart structures. The need for such work exists because many structures have several eponymous names. In addition, if you arrange the terms in the chronological order of their occurrence, you can trace the main stages in the history of the human heart study. Despite the large number of eponymous names for the same structure and the doubtful attribution of some authors, the work lists only the most common eponyms in domestic and foreign literature, about the origin and authors of which reliable information was found. In 1955, at the IV International Congress of Anatomists in Paris (Paris Anatomical Nomenclature, PNA), eponymous names were excluded from the terminology. There are a number of objective reasons for this, but at the same time, the main function of eponyms is lost - the preservation and transmission to descendants the memory of major figures of medical science who made a significant contribution to its development. Therefore, despite the exclusion of eponyms from the official terminology, these terms are widely used today both at the departments of universities in the world, and in clinical literature and practice.

В течение последних нескольких десятилетий проблемы терминологии привлекли внимание многих исследователей и ученых, что может объясняться растущей важностью науки в жизни людей. Развитие медицинской терминологии началось много веков назад и продолжается по сей день. Основная цель этой работы заключается в рассмотрении терминологического глоссария сердечно-сосудистой системы, созданного на основе  Nomina Anatomical 2001 года, а также в комплексном анализе перевода специализированной терминологии. Наряду с разработкой испано-русского двуязычного глоссария, мы также обратили внимание на анализ собранных данных и комментарии, которые могут предотвратить ошибки и путаницу среди переводчиков и получателей переведенной информации. Для достижения целей мы прибегли к методу анализа параллельных текстов на выбранную тему в испанском и русском языках, а также к методу визуализации, что позволило нам перевести термины из списка и гарантировать высокий уровень точности, объективности, корректности, эквивалентности и адекватности. Основной гипотезой данной статьи является то, что, несмотря на греческое и латинское происхождение большинства выбранных терминов на испанском и значительной их части в русском языке, дословный перевод представляет собой наиболее серьезную и наиболее распространенную ошибку, которую совершают переводчики медицинских текстов, что объясняется особенностями развития медицинских систем в русском и испанском языках, где каждая отрасль терминологии сосредоточилась на своих собственных эволюционных принципах.Resumen: En las últimas décadas, los problemas de la terminología han llamado la atención de muchos investigadores y científicos, lo cual se explica por la creciente importancia que adquiere la ciencia en la vida de las personas. La terminología médica empezó su formación hace siglos y sigue desarrollándose hasta el momento. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es dar cuenta de la creación de un glosario de la terminología del sistema cardiovascular basada en la Nómina Anatómica del año 2001 y un análisis exhaustivo de la traducción de términos realizada. Además de la elaboración de un glosario bilingüe español-ruso también nos hemos centrado en el análisis de datos recogidos y comentarios que pueden prevenir errores y confusiones para los traductores y otros destinatarios. Para conseguir los objetivos propuestos hemos optado principalmente por el método de análisis de textos paralelos acerca del tema elegido en español y en ruso, así como el de la metodología de visualización, lo que nos ha permitido traducir los términos de la lista representada garantizando el máximo nivel de fidelidad, objetividad, precisión, equivalencia y adecuación. La hipótesis principal del presente artículo consiste en que, a pesar del origen griego y latín de la mayoría de los términos seleccionados en castellano y una gran parte de los términos en ruso, la traducción literal de éstos representa el error más grave y más frecuente de los traductores de los textos médicos ya que debido a las peculiaridades del desarrollo de los sistemas de lenguajes médicos en español y en ruso, la terminología de cada idioma ha seguido sus propias pautas de evolución.Abstract: During the last few decades the problems of terminology have caught the attention of many researchers and scientists which can be explained by the growing importance of science in the lives of people. Medical terminology formation began centuries ago and keeps developing nowadays. The main objective of this paper is to discuss the terminological glossary of the cardiovascular system created based on the Nomina Anatomical 2001 as well as the comprehensive analysis of specialized terminology translation. Apart from the development of the Spanish-Russian bilingual glossary, I have also focused on the analysis of data collected and comments that can prevent errors and confusion among translators and recipients of the translated information. To achieve the objectives the method of analysis of parallel texts on the subject chosen has been used in Spanish and in Russian, as well as that of visualization, which allowed us to translate the terms from the list and guarantee the highest level of fidelity, objectivity, accuracy, equivalence and adequacy. The main hypothesis of this article is that, despite the Greek and Latin origin of most of the terms selected in Spanish and a large part of the terms in Russian, their literal translation represents the most serious and most common mistake that translators in healthcare setting make due to the peculiarities of the development of medical systems in Spanish and Russian languages, where each language terminology has followed its own guidelines of evolution.

The origins of Western Medicine can be found through the Greeks and the Romans, originally with Mythological figures represented by the god Asclepius, and later by Greek doctors such as Hippocrates and Galen. Roman medicine was highly influenced by the Greek medical tradition, relying more on naturalistic observations rather than on spiritual rituals. The writings of Galen survived more than other medical scriptures in antiquity. His theories dominated and influenced Western medical science for more than 1,300 years. This acceptance led to the spread of Greek medical theories throughout the Roman Empire, and thus a large portion of the West. Most of the actual medical terms are of Greek origin, as they were the founders of rational medicine in the golden age of Greek civilization. The Hippocrates were the first to describe diseases based on observation, and the names given by them to many conditions are still used today. On the other hand, most anatomical terms are in Latin (Nomina Anatomica), explained by the printed descriptions and illustrations of human dissections published in 1543 in the seminal work “De humani corporis fabrica” (“The Fabric of the Human Body”) by Andreas Vesalius.

He problem of interaction between language and society is more and more relevant in the modern world. Changes of the world have influenced the discourse in various spheres of communication. Moreover the progress of medicine has led to changes in the system of medical terms, and, consequently, to difficulties in understanding of terms in the ordinary consciousness. A person always wants to understand other people and to be understood by them. So it is the main goal of communication. The article deals with the issue of the functioning of medical terms in the minds of first-year French-speaking students. First-year stu- dents have the ordinary consciousness. Medical terms, which are studied by them (first-year students), function in the ordinary consciousness in incorrect form. It's because they are based on associations, feelings which the person has during the process of cognition, and, therefore, they must be interpreted. During the process of learning, there is a need to clarify the personal meanings that medical students have in regarding to special terms. In this article the author gives the results of the research concerning the French-speaking students' knowledge of medical terminology. The author gives examples of the perception and rethinking of medical terms based on common knowledge and examines the formation of scientific knowledge to develop the language of medicine in the consciousness of students and its competent use in the future.

The article is based on the manuscript “Hundred books on skills of Medicine” by Abu Sahl al-Masihi from the collection of the Oriental Department of the Gorky Library of St. Petersburg State University (Ms. O 667). The author of this written monument was regarded as the teacher of Ibn Sina (Avicenna). The text of Abu Sahl al-Masihi is an encyclopedic medical treatise of the XI century. It consists of one hundred “books”, each of which is a separate and independent chapter dedicated to a specific problem of theoretical or practical medicine. The article presents an analysis of Arabic medical terms found in the table of contents to the first book. They can be divided into four categories: borrowings from other languages, obsolete terms, terms found in the Qur’an, and terms with Arabic roots. The authors of the article cited fragments of Quranic texts as an illustration of the early origin of some terms for physiological states. The medical knowledge and traditions of the Arabs played a decisive role in the development of Arab-Muslim medieval medicine. Medical terms of the Arabs, introduced into scientific circulation in the early Middle Ages, are actively used in modern Arabic. The results of the lexical analysis of medical terminology from the first “book” of the treatise reflect the scale of the phenomenon called Arab-Muslim medieval medicine.

Scientific literature review deals with the issues concerning the peculiarities of the eye socket clinical anatomy. Both common data concerning the peculiarities of the eye socket structure and the results of certain modern studies have been analyzed and structured, which will be useful for both students, teachers and practicing physicians. All the names of anatomical structures are given according to the International Anatomical Nomenclature in the Ukrainian language with Latin equivalents.

The article discusses medical terminology and its contemporary developmental perspectives in English and Bulgarian academic languages based on extensive illustrative material. The research focus is on the following active term-forming processes: lexico-semantic, lexico-morphological, lexico-syntactic, word borrowing and related linguistic phenomena - specialization, metaphorization, metonymization, affixation, composition, formation of medical terms-word combinations, direct translation, free translation, introduction of English medical terminology into Bulgarian, etc. Multidimensionality of medical terminology base in terms of cognitive, linguistic, socio-communicative and pedagogical aspects has been proved. The basic postulates of the last three modern theories of terminology are summarized.

Ukrainian medical terms-composites with international components hepat-, hepatic(o)-, hepat(o)- and Ukrainian equivalent liver have been studied in the article. The problem of their interchange has been brought up. It has been defined their productivity and word formation mobility. The outlook of the article is that the terms with somatic components need further studying their productivity and mobility. One of the biggest Ukrainian term systems is medical terminology. Its development has been caused by granting the Ukrainian language official status. The question of use of a term continue to be relevant today because medical terminology has not been studied enough as medical practice shows, for this reason physicians, scientists are trying to regiment and improve medical dictionaries, appealing for a help to linguists. General issues of formation of medical terms were and are important because most of them are loan words usually come from the Latin and Greek languages. The basis for professional language of a medical worker is a use of professional terms of a high level of standardization, accuracy of formations, relevance and logic presentation. Medical lexis is one of the oldest term systems. It was formed both on the world and own language basis. Development and improvement of medical terminology can be observed through scientific papers, professional textbooks, and medical dictionaries. The aim of the article: to characterize Ukrainian medical terms with somatic components hepat-, hepatic(o)-, hepat(o)- and Ukrainian equivalent liver according to semantic groups and relations; to identify their word formation mobility in the modern Ukrainian literary language. The object of research – medical terms with somatic components. The subject of research – their lexical and semantic features, peculiarities of terms with borrowing and national components. The material was taken from: “Dorlan’d Illustrated Medical Dictionary” (2007), “Ukrainian-Latin-English Explanatory Dictionary” edited by M.Pavlovskyi, L.Petruh, I.Holovko (1995), “Explanatory Dictionary of Medical terms” edited by N. Lytvynenko, N.Misnyk (2010), “New Dictionary of Loan Words” edited by L.Shevchenko, O.Niky, O.Khomyak, A.Demyanyuk (2008) and “ Dictionary of foreign words” by P.Shtep (1977). Urgency of the research of terms with somatic components has been caused by the need to establish the specificity of somatic symbols and term composites and identify lexical and syntactic features words of such components. It is necessary to note that at the modern stage in the Ukrainian medical language there are medical terms that are made up of international term elements of Greek or Latin origin, as well as Ukrainian origin. Lexical items with somatic components exist only in the medical field. Somatic international components include: cardi(o)-, hema(o)-, hemat(o)-, ot(o)-, ophtalm(o), psych(o)-, hepat(o)-, hepatic(o)- and others. In the Ukrainian language such correspondent terms are: heart, blood, ear, eye, head, liver and others. Among the somatic components one can meet such archaisms as: mouth, forehead, finger. Thus, words of the somatic components hepat-, hepatic(o)-, hepat(o)- and Ukrainian equivalent liver indicate: processes; names of diseases; belonging to the liver or action on it; people by profession, people; names of science; cell, classes. Studied terms mainly correspond to these features because they are relevant to the concepts they indicate; also they are included into medical terminology, have clear definitions in the dictionary, they are stylistically neutral, but some of them do not meet monosemy (polysemy of such lexical terms are given) and synonymy (synonyms are given both for words of foreign origin and their Ukrainian equivalents). This can be explained by the fact that these requirements are desirable rather than real. Foreign language terms always look for equivalents among national lexical items. And polysemy shows the development of speech-term, but over time one of the definitions can get a new nomination. Components hepat-, hepatic(o)-, hepat(o)- can not be combined directly with Ukrainian word stems and roots. Most components are components of foreign origin with particular lexical meaning which is preserved wholly or partly in derivative words. Words with hepat-, hepatic(o)-, hepat(o)- and liver are not interchangeable. Samolysova A. and A. Nikolaev noted that “professional terminology should be unified and brought up to a user in a form that would require the least effort to use.” Medicine does not stay still, new methods of diagnosing diseases, alternative methods of treatment appear, so a need arises in formation of new terms, and unification of their grammatical structure. Medical terminology is a common goal both and medical workers and linguists. Let’s work on creating a generalized medical nomenclature.

In this contribution I will analyse how medical students in their 5th year explain medical terms to simulated patients (SP) and which functions fulfil their inserted descriptionsin the explanation process. Two simulated doctor-patient conversations selected from a corpus of 273 conversations constitute the object of my study. They were videotaped in the training module Translating medical terminology in everyday language, constituting part of a simulation training (PJ-STArT-Block) for medical students at Cologne University. The analysing tools employed are the functional pragmatic approach to discourse and, more specifically, the speech action patterns “explaining” and “describing” as well as aspects fromconversation analysis regarding the role of the hearer. First, I will discuss how and to what extent the students’ and the SP’s general speech mode is influenced by the simulation itself.Then, I will analyse two exemplary transcribed excerpts of the exchanges, focussing primarily on the speaker. I will demonstrate that the addressees of the descriptions that introduce or interrupt an explanation are not primarily the hearers but actually the speakers themselves who need this communication phase to activate, to structure and to phrase their knowledge. In the conclusion I will recommend further linguistic research particularly on SP’s speech in simulated consultations.


This chapter provides a critical pathway for the uses of augmented reality (AR) in a variety of different situations. The chapter starts with an introduction to AR and then explores how these concepts can be perceived to support not just learning, but also industry. Through this journey, the reader will explore aspects like how AR can be used to support and develop individual behaviors, strategies, and what difficulties are fraught when thinking about implementing AR in education and aspects of industry (engineering, medical science, libraries) and what benefits they can have. Finally, the chapter critically analyses possible future directions AR and how this can improve retention within higher education.
