Sorbaria tomentosa,, commonly known as “Berre” is native to Himalaya and Hindukush range in Pakistan. Qualitative phytochemical screening as well as quantitative antioxidant potential of its ethanolic extract was evaluated. Antioxidant potential of the extract was determined using standard methods like DPPH, FRAP, total phenolics, total flavonoids, ABTS radical cation scavenging assay and β-carotene linoleic acid emulsion system. Cu(II) and Zn(II) chelates of ,,Sorbaria tomentosa,, were also prepared and their antioxidant potential was compared with the extract as well as with synthetic antioxidants (BHT and BHA). It was observed that ,,Sorbaria tomentosa,, is a good source of natural antioxidant that worked efficiently compared to respective chelates. Keeping in view less efficiency of chelated extracts, stabilization studies of sunflower oil were conducted with ethanolic extract (250, 500, 1000 ppm) of ,,Sorbaria tomentosa,,. Various parameters like PV, FFA and IV were estimated to evaluate stabilization of oil. ,,Sorbaria tomentosa,, extract (1000 ppm) showed almost same role during stabilization like BHA at ambient condition during a storage period of 45 days. Grapefruit is source of anticancer and antioxidant reagents. Extracts of grapefruit peel (Gf-P) and seeds (Gf-S) were screened for their antioxidant capabilities at room temperature to stabilize soybean and sunflower oil for a storage period of 45 days. b-carotene linoleic acid system, FRAP assay, ABTS method were performed for the measurement of antioxidant potential of Gf-P and Gf-S. Oil samples containing extracts of Gf-P and Gf-S at 400 ppm, 800 ppm, 1200 ppm concentrations as well as synthetic antioxidants (BHT and BHA) at 200 ppm concentration were prepared. Free fatty acid (%) and peroxide (meq/Kg) values of all these prepared samples were evaluated. Results were statistically analyzed and it was observed that Gf-P has better antioxidant potential than Gf-S.

Due to the unfavorable effects of synthetic antioxidants, the use of various sources of plant antioxidants to prevent foods oxidation, especially oil-based or fat-based varieties, has been recently got considerable attention. In this study, the antioxidant effect of essential oil and extract from the citron fruit (Citrus medica L.) was investigated on the thermal stability of sunflower oil. Aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic extracts of citron peel (800 ppm), BHT synthetic antioxidant (200 ppm), and citron peel essential oil (800 ppm) were added to sunflower oil. The oil oxidation stability was evaluated during 5 days through analyzing the values of peroxide, anisidine, thiobarbituric acid, totox, and oxidative stability index (OSI). Results showed that the peroxide, anisidine, and totox value had an increasing trend over time. The effects of storage time, extract, and essential oil were statistically significant in reducing the oxidation rate of sunflower oil during storage. Ultrasonic-assisted ethanolic extract at 30 min showed the highest OSI. The results of this study demonstrated the positive effects of citron peel extract essential oil and on sunflower oil stability and its superiority over synthetic antioxidants.

Abstract: Shrimp waste, as an important source of natural carotenoids, is produced in large quantities in seafood processing industry. One of the important characteristics of carotenoids is their ability to act as antioxidants, thus protecting cells and tissues from damaging effects of free radicals and singlet oxygen. The aim of this study was to find effective method for carotenoid extraction [Enzymatic and alkaline treatment] from shrimp waste and compare their antioxidant potential with synthetic antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole [BHA] and butylated hydroxytoluene [BHT] using sunflower oil. The sunflower oil was exposed to three concentration of extracted carotenoid [470, 235 and 118 mg/kg] and synthetic antioxidants. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation was evaluated for Malondialdehyde and peroxide value. The mean values of carotenoid extract were 243 and 170 mg/kg for enzymatic and alkaline treatment, respectively. So the highest efficacy of carotenoid extraction was obtained from enzymatic extraction. The oil samples containing 470 ppm carotenoid, which extracted by alcalase as the default treatment, exhibited the less peroxide value and higher antioxidant potential than the oil samples containing synthetic antioxidants. According to the results, the synthetic antioxidants can be replaced by extracted carotenoids from shrimp waste as a natural antioxidant to inhibit oxidation.

Background: Garlic (Allium sativum) possesses health enhancing abilities due to the presence various phytoceutics moities. The current research was deigned to explore the phytochemicals and antioxidant capacity of Pakistani garlic. Methods: Garlic extracts were obtained using methanol, hexane and ethyl acetate at different time intervals (35, 50 and 65 min) followed by their polyphenols and flavonoid content determination. Afterwards, the antioxidant potential was also determined. Results: The outcomes revealed that the methanolic extracts obtained at 50 min extraction time showed maximum total phenolics as 60.38±0.23 mg GAE/100g and flavonoids as 58.45±1.24 mg/100g. Similarly, the highest DPPH activity (61.59±1.58%) and β-carotene and linoleic acid potential (64.96±1.72%) were also observed for methanolic extract. Conclusion: Inferences were made that Pakistani garlic contains myriad of phenolics and flavonoids but the extraction of these components depends upon the solvent/time combination. In this study, methanol proved to be the ideal solvent for the maximum extraction of phytochemicals from garlic.

In this study, Daphne gnidium leaves extracts were screened for their Phenolic content, antimicrobial, antioxidant and antihemolitic activities. Decoction and maceration were used to obtain the aqueous (Aq E) and the ethanolic extract (Et E), respectively. Total phenolic content was determined using Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. Moreover, a disc diffusion assay and inhibition of mycelial growth test were applied to evaluate the antibacterial and antifungal activity. The extracts were also tested for their antioxidant effects in terms of DPPH, OH, H2O2, β-carotene, and ferrous ion chelating assays. To investigate antihemolytic activity, the 2,2,-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) was used to induce erythrocyte oxidative hemolysis. Results indicated that ethanolic extract (Et E) contains the highest polyphenol content (775.25 μg GAE/mg extract). The Et E inhibited the growth of bacterial strains with inhibition zone diameters from 7 to 15 mm. In contrast, no activities have been found against all fungal strains. In antihemolytic test, aqueous and ethanolic extracts showed almost the same effect with an HT50 value of 106 min. Ethanolic extract was found to be more active in DPPH and β-carotene assays (IC50: 5.76 μg/ml and 70% inhibition respectively). However, the aqueous extract showed a greater effect than the ethanolic one in metal chelating activity assay (IC50: 170 μg/ml), OH scavenging effect assay (IC50: 9.67 μg/ml) and H2O2 scavenging assay (IC50: 133.2 μg/ml).

The current line of investigation was focused at perusing the presence of phytochemical constituents, investigation of total phenol and flavonoid content, the antioxidant potential of various extracts of Caralluma adscendens whole plant using various in-vitro assays. The dried plant powder was extracted with various solvents based on polarity (Pet ether, Chloroform, Ethyl acetate, Ethanol and Aqueous) by hot continuous extraction in Soxhlet's apparatus and Extracts were dried. Phytoconstituents present in each extract was examined by performing preliminary phytochemical screening. Total Phenolic Content (TPC), Total Flavonoid Content (TFC) and Antioxidant potential for crude extracts were studied by DPPH, nitric oxide scavenging and FRAP methods. The total phenolic content and flavonoid content of Ethanolic extract of plant was found to be 80.08±0.629mg and 70.88±1.170mg of GAE and Quercetin equivalents respectively. The Ethanolic extract exhibited potent antioxidant activity as determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH), nitric oxide scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays(FRAP) than the other extracts. The IC50 values for the Ethanolic extract of Caralluma adscendens was found to be 214.765±0.224 µg/ml and 215.928±0.506µg/ml by DPPH and nitric oxide scavenging assays respectively.

Many people around the world struggle with the problem of an insufficient supply of iodine (I) and selenium (SE) in their diet. Food enriched with these elements is a good source of iodine and selenium. Juices made from four carrot (CJ) cultivars and biofortified with iodine and selenium (BCJs) were investigated to determine their I and Se contents, their impact on the supply of these elements to the diet, and losses in the production process. Other juice parameters important for consumers health were also determined. A significant increase in I and Se content relative to CJ was observed for each BCJ. The losses of I and Se (relative to raw material) during juice preparation were depended based on variety and added elements. Carrot biofertilization with iodine and selenium contributed to decreased contents of dry matter, total soluble solids, protein, sugars, and β-carotene in the juices and lower antioxidative activity as compared with CJ. Biofortification had little effect on the color and pH of juices. Finally, six polyphenolic compounds were identified and determined. Despite the reduction in the content of some ingredients in BCJ, they still remain their valuable source. Their added value is the increased content of iodine and selenium, which largely cover the daily demand for these elementals.

Biodiesel is a renewable plant-based fuel as an alternative for fossil diesel fuel which has many advantages. However, its high content of unsaturated fatty acid causes an oxidation instability during storage. Numerous additives have been used and developed to overcome this problem such as the application of phenolic compound-based antioxidants. Pyrogallol is reported to be one of the best phenolic antioxidants for biodiesel. Unfortunately, pyrogallol has a low solubility in oil solution. In this research, pyrogallol solubility is increased by preparing a pyrogallol derivative through a reaction between pyrogallol and methyl linoleate in the presence of radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The spectrophotometric method was used for solubility test. Antioxidant potential was examined using acid value determination during a four-week storage period as well as the Rancimat test to see its performance under accelerated oxidation conditions. The reaction produced a molecule which has a molecular weight of 418 g/mol, representing pyrogallol derivative which has a new C–O covalent bond with methyl linoleate. The result was confirmed by using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 2D-HMQC) resulting in a molecular structure of methyl (10E,12E)-9-(2,6-dihydroxyphenoxy)octadeca-10,12-dienoate and its isomer methyl (9E,11E)-13-(2,6-dihydroxyphenoxy)octadeca-9,11-dienoate with a yield of 12.86% and selectivity of 21.05% on the basis of pyrogallol. Compared to pyrogallol, tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), and gallic acid, the pyrogallol derivative has the highest solubility and acid value stability in palm oil biodiesel. The Rancimat induction time (IP) result of the pyrogallol derivative is higher than the biodiesel and is above the accelerated oxidation test American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D 6751 standard.
