The Digital Enterprise as an Emerging Landscape for Universities and Their Operation

This chapter presents a framing discussion around the notion of a digital enterprise in the context of higher education. The chapter makes the assumption that a university like a commercial enterprise can draw significant benefit from acting as a digital enterprise. The discussion indicates that some of a university's existing and historical activities are in line with notions of a digital enterprise. The chapter proposes a framework for assessing the readiness of a university with respect to its actions as a digital enterprise recognising the complexity of domains residing within the confines of a university environment. Critically, the chapter argues that such a future systems project should not only consider positive use cases but also recognise that a digital enterprise may have unplanned and unintentional consequences. Hence, this chapter argues that new forms of governance may also be required alongside the planned journey to a digital enterprise world.

Incorporating Virtual Reality aesthetics and semantics can contribute towards transforming the education landscape in both the developed and developing world. This can be realized by VR’s capacity to enable the design of more vibrant and dynamic/interactive multimedia applications that are user centric. VR has a positive impact on e-Learning, which is an emerging education model in Africa. This paper uproots the different initiatives, experiences, and challenges that have been met by various endeavors to employ VR as a tool for education, especially in African universities. Using exploratory approaches, two universities in South Africa and Botswana are reviewed as case studies in order to ascertain the status of VR use in higher education in Africa. The paper finds that the potential of VR education is evident in Africa but needs to be unearthed.

The aim of the article is to analyze the process of gender socialization of students with disabilities. We used a comparative analysis method and method of generalization in the research process. The logic of our study involved organizing and conducting a survey of students with disabilities. The state of gender socialization of students with disabilities in six institutions of higher education of Ukraine is investigated. The social and pedagogical conditions for the formation of gender socialization of students with disabilities are substantiated. The importance of creating a gender sensitive university environment based on the idea of gender equality has been proved. The basic elements that determine the level of gender sensitivity of a higher education institution are considered. The expediency of creating self-help centers for students with disabilities is substantiated. The essence of teachers and students motivation to cooperate in an inclusive environment in the context of gender socialization is highlighted. Positive impact of students with disabilities involvement in active forms of student and out-of-class student activity has been established. It is proved that the experience of students with special educational needs is not gender-neutral, because boys and girls deal with different realities that shape the understanding of disability.

The study is aimed at identifying and analyzing the determinants of effective pedagogical education for future university teachers. Research interest in this issue stems from world wide dramatic changes in higher education caused by interdependent processes of globalization, massification and digitalization, which in turn foregrounds the problem of effective teaching in a more diverse and complex university environment. The research is based on both theoretical analysis and comparison of modern approaches to the problem under study, generalization of pedagogical experience and empirical investigation. The authors focused on students’ expectations and perceptions regarding real and ideal university teachers. Data collection involved the qualitative approach with the use of focus group method as well as focused interviews. The findings obtained helped to substantiate key determinants of effective pedagogical education for future university teachers, namely an opportune content and teaching methods updating, relevant forms of training, consideration of students’ expectations. The results of the research are of interest to a wide range of experts in the field of higher education and can be applied within the courses of “Pedagogy of Higher Education”, “Pedagogy and Psychology of Higher Education”, “Methods of Teaching at the University”, etc.

Castilla-La Mancha University has decided to implement two tools: WebCT and Moodle, Virtual Campus has emerged: www.campusvirtual.ulcm.es. This paper is dedicated to the analysis of said tool as a primary mode of e-learning expansion in the university environment. It can be used to carry out standard educational university activities in accordance with the guidelines set out by the new European Space for Higher Education. New needs continue to present themselves, not only with regard to the exchange of information and documents, but the complete and integrated management of teaching which is carried out using virtual environments and the Internet: e-learning.

The aim of this work is to develop a proposal for a methodology in the university environment that enables us to design our course with an approach based on the development and acquisition of competences within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), allowing a transition from a model focused on teaching to a model focused on student learning. This means, after having established the competences to be acquired by the student during our course, designing the activities that must be undertaken in order to achieve them, so that the central core of our work is made up of three sequential steps: a) selection and definition of the generic and specific competences to be acquired during our course, b) inclusion of competence training activities and distribution amongst the topics of the course, and c) the procedure for the assessment of competences.

The use of Information Technology (IT) in higher education is said to be useful if its application is in accordance with the vision and mission of the organization. Academic information system audit is a method of assessing or assessing academic information systems to ensure that the governance and management functions of the information system are implemented properly. Unimal is a university that has implemented information technology in its operational processes. In achieving the organization's vision, the use of IT in the organization must always be monitored so that the services provided to users can be maximized, including by conducting an audit process to identify the level of IT maturity so that IT management can find solutions from processes that are considered less than optimal. This study aims to measure the level of capability of Unimal Academic Information Technology using COBIT 5 Domain APO (Align, Plan, and Organise) in the APO01, APO02, APO04 and APO11 processes. The focus of the research is also based on the need for priority processes in the Malikussaleh University environment and research related to the APO domain has not been carried out. The purpose of this study in general is to analyze Academic Information Technology using the COBIT 5 framework in the APO domain at the Malikussaleh University, as well as to provide solutions for improving academic information technology and IT implementation at the Malikussaleh University.

Transgender people suffer from others’ negative attitudes in many situations. The university context is one environment where further progress has to be made to ensure the inclusion of transgender people. In this study, a sample of 376 undergraduate students was collected and their attitudes towards transgender people were analyzed. A comparison was made between number of years in university, and a sample from the general public. In addition, comparisons were made by gender, since the literature shows more negative attitudes toward transgender people in men than in women. The results show relatively positive attitudes toward transgender people among higher education students, but they have little knowledge of transgender identity. In turn, researchers found significant differences between different years in the university and between genders. These results support the need to expand knowledge about transgender people in the university environment.

Higher education, often referred to as the ivory tower, gives the grand illusion of an environment of learned individuals with intellectual agendas and pursuits. This specialized environment is not a resistance-free fortress immune from toxic behaviors and unfair internalized institutional structures. In this chapter, the authors provide some theoretical perspectives of a toxic workplace environment. Then the authors focus on a review of literature on toxic leadership; the conceptualization of workplace bullying; the prevalence of academic mobbing; and the effects of toxicity on women professors in the academy. The final sections of the chapter include a discussion of implications for policy development in a toxic workplace; implications for research on toxic university environment; and concluding remarks.

The article provides an overview of the main concepts of internationalization of higher education and the current state of internationalization of higher education in Kazakhstan. Basic regulations regulating the development of internationalization strategies are presented. The authors analyze the project Strategy for Internationalization of Abai University for 2020-2025, focusing on the integration of foreign students and PPS into the university environment. The strategy highlights the current state of internationalization, priority areas of development and necessary measures for its implementation, such as designing the educational environment of the university for foreign students, recruiting foreign students, organizing online admissions and distance (mixed) studying, development of educational programs in English, creation of a Center for adaptation and support of foreign students, development of ID card of a foreign student(personal student card), organization of exchange practices in the field of education and science, etc.
