Silica fume (SF) modifies interfacial transition zone between cement paste and aggregate at the micro level. Properties of both fresh and hardened silica fume concrete are affected significantly compared to normal concrete. Experiments indicate that concretes become more cohesive and less prone to segregation in the presence of silica fume, moreover, performance of water demand, setting of time, plastic shrinkage varies respectively from concretes without silica fume. Obvious mechanical enhancement of concrete is observed in the aspects of compressive strength tensile strength, elastic modulus as well as fracture toughness.

Abstract The study explores the mechanical properties of treated recycled extended polystyrene (TEPS) concrete, treated by two methods, one by heating, and the other by immersed recycled EPS in cement neat. By substituting 0 %, 15 %, 25 %, and 35 % of the coarse aggregate volume with treated recycled EPS, (for both method). Treated recycled TEPS concrete ratios are experimentally prepared, while the cement is substituted thru 10 % silica fume (SF). Tests were carried out, like compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture, and density. The outcomes display the decreasing of the compressive strength, tensile strength and modulus of rupture of TEPS concretes with rise TEPS percentage around 26 %, 17 % and 32 %, respectively (35% TEPS) related to standard concrete. They also show that TEPS concrete density decrease about 30 % of normal concrete. The TEPS is suitable in concrete and meets provisions.

Abstract The purpose of this research is to investigate the properties of Recycled Demolition Aggregate (RDA) concrete. Five RDA concrete ratios are prepared experimentally by substituting, 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the gravel weight with RDA. While, the 10% of cement is substituted by silica fume (Si). Adding steel fibres (SF) (0.5 %, 1.0 % and 1.5 %). Treated RDA with cement mortar and superplasticizer (SP) admixture added to (1%) of total cementitious materials (TCM). The concrete properties exams performed such as; density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of rupture. The tests concluded that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and rupture modulus values of RDA concretes are reduced with an increased RDA ratio relative to normal concrete. Density of RDA concrete reduces around 9% of normal concrete. The RDA is suitable in concrete and meets specifications.

This study investigated the influence of reinforcing hydroxyapatite (HA) with alumina (Al) and chitosan nanofiber (CH) to enhance its usefulness in load bearing application. Commercial alumina was used while chitosan fiber and hydroxyapatite were synthesized from cowry shells and limestone respectively. The developed composites were characterized with a view to assessing theirsuitability for use as medical implants in load bearing capacity. It was observed that the optimum compressive strength obtained was 181.73 MPa, tensile strength of 172.67 MPa, hardness value of 529.21 HV, fracture toughness of 7.42 MPa.m1/2 , elastic modulus of 8.23 GPa and bending strength of 175.51 MPa. Increasing volume fractions of Al-CH resulted in decrease in compressive strength, hardness and elastic modulus of hydroxyapatite while its tensile strength, bending strength and fracture toughness increased. The result obtained from the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry revealed that the intermolecular hydrogen bond and chelate interaction between the constituents contribute to the good mechanical properties of the composite. X-Ray Fluorescence analysis result indicates that their chemical compositions contain ions which are found in the physiological environment. The dispersion of the alumina-chitosan nano fiber in the HA matrix as revealed by the Scanning Electron Microscope micrographs result in the formation of interfaces which activates different mechanisms that improve the strength of HA. The optimum mechanical property was obtained at 20-20-60 Al-CH-HA composite. Hence, this composite will be a suitable material for load bearing application.

In composite science, desirable materials that are lighter but have the power and quality that can match or even exceed the material that has been there before. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cellulose fiber addition from banana gedebok to tensile strength, compressive strength and damping of concrete composite sound. To achieve this objective, mixing of cellulose fibers with K-275 quality concrete mix with variation of 0% and 5% substitution in which the cellulose is varied in powder and wicker form. Delignification of lignin content from banana gedebok was done by soaking and drying method without any variation and yielding powder having cellulose content of 13,0388%, hemicellulose 18,2796% and lignin 0,6684%. This study produces concrete composites that have a tensile strength and a compressive strength lower than that of normal concrete. Normally reinforced concrete tensile strength value 94.5 kg / cm2, 71.4 kg / cm2 cellulose powder concrete and 90.3 kg / cm2 cellulose woven concrete. Normal concrete compressive strength value 334,22 kg / cm2, cellulose powder concrete 215,7 kg / cm2, and cellulose webbing concrete 157,98 kg / cm2. As for the power damping sound of cellulose webbing concrete has the highest damping power compared to other concrete with the absorbed sound intensity that is 52-68 dB

Clay has a low environmental impact and can develop into many different products. The research presents two different case studies. In the first, the clay is the binder of raw earth doughs in order to produce clay-bricks. We investigate the effects of natural fibrous reinforcements (rice straws and basalt fibers) in four different mixtures. From the comparison with a mix without reinforcements, it is possible to affirm that the 0.40% of basalt fibers reduce the shrinkage by about 25% and increase the compressive strength by about 30%. Future studies will focus on identifying the fibrous effects on tensile strength and elastic modulus, as well as the optimal percentage of fibers. In the second study, the clay, in form of brick powder (“cocciopesto”), gives high alkaline resistance and breathability performance, as well as rendering and color to the plaster. The latter does not have artificial additives. The plaster respects the cultural instance of the original building. The research underlines how the use of a local (and traditional) material such as clay can be a promoter of sustainability in the contemporary building sector. Future studies must investigate further possible uses of clay as well as a proper regulatory framework.

Title: The Effect of Using Mediteran Soil as Cement Substitution Materials in Compressive Strength and Tensile Strength of Concrete Concrete is a composite material (mixture) of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and water. The potential of limestone in Indonesia is very large, reaching 28.678 billion tons which is the main ingredient in the cement manufacture. In the long run it will be depleted because it is a non-renewable natural resources. So to reduce the use of limestone the utilization of Mediteran soil as a substitution for some cement in the manufacture of concrete is required. The initial idea is based on the chemical composition contained in the Mediteran soil almost identical to the cement, which is carbonate (CaO) and silica (SiO2). The purpose of this research is to reveal the influence of substitution of Mediteran soil by 20% and 40% in the compressive strength and tensile of the concrete at age 3, 7, 14, and 28 days with the number of test specimen each 3 pieces on each variation in 10cm x20cm cylinder with planning of concrete mixture refers to SK SNI method T-15-1900-03. The type of research used is quantitative with the experimental method of laboratory test and data analysis of comparative method and regression. The results show that compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete using Mediteran soil substitution comparable to  the strength of normal concrete with dry treatment. In the composition of 20% Mediteran soils decreased by 51.35% or 7.9 MPa (compressive strength) and 30.60% or 0.93 MPa (tensile strength). While the composition of 40% Mediteran soil decreased by 43.78% or 9.13 MPa (compressive strength) and 2.24% or 1.31 MPa (tensile strength).

In order to investigate the carbonation resistance of shotcrete and the mechanical properties after carbonation, the accelerated carbonation test was carried out. The results indicate that the carbonation resistance of shotcrete is superior to that of normal concrete. With the increasing of carbonation depth, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of shotcrete grew rapidly. The admixing of steel fiber can further improve the carbonation resistance, reduce the carbonation rate, and increase the splitting tensile strength of shotcrete greatly. Besides, based on analyzing the effects of construction technology and steel fiber of concrete for the carbonation resistance, a carbonation depth model for shotcrete was established. Key words: shotcrete; carbonation; steel fiber; mechanical properties

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity characteristics of high performance concrete. These tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of HPC for up to 7 and 28 days. Mixtures were prepared with water to binder ratio of 0.40. Two mixtures were containing fly ash at 25%, silica fume at 5% cement replacement, respectively. Another mixture was contains blast furnace slag and fly ash at 25%. Three standard 100¥a200 cylinder specimens were prepared. HPC showed improvement in the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength when ordinary Portland cement was replaced with silica fume. Compare with specimens FA25 and BS25FA25, specimen SF5 showed much more modulus of elasticity. It shows that the use of the blast furnace slag of 25% and fly ash of 25% cement replacement has caused a small increase in compressive strength and splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity compared to the only use of fly ash of 25% at 28days. The results indicated that the use of blast furnace slag or silica fume provided the good performance compare to fly ash when the mechanical properties of the high performance concretes were taken into account.

Due to many different characteristics such as irregular polygon particle with pointed edges, rough surface and larger content of stone powder, machine-made sand has ignorable effects on the properties of concrete. As the basis for the design of concrete structures, the relations among the basic mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and elastic modulus should be clearly understood. This paper summarizes the test data from the published references, and discusses the relations among these properties by statistical analyses compared with those of ordinary concrete. The results show that the axial compressive strength and the tensile strength can be prospected by the same formulas of ordinary concrete specified in current Chinese design code, but the prospected tensile strength should multiply a reducing coefficient when the strength grade of concrete is lower than C30. The elastic modulus of concrete with machine-made sand is larger than that of ordinary concrete, which should be prospect by the formula in this paper. Meanwhile, the formula of flexural strength is suggested.
