Adsorption of silver ions by Thiourea (T) and Formaldehyde (F) resins in aqueous solution was investigated, where the TF resins were prepared by a one-step reaction catalyzed with acid or by a two-step one with base and acid, respectively. Effects of the reaction factors, such as the synthesis method, the monomer molar ratio and the amount of acid, on the TF resin adsorption performance were examined. According to Langmuir monolayer adsorption theory, experiments and theoretical calculations were designed to acquire the maximum adsorption capacity of silver ions.

AbstractNitrogen-grafting through the addition of glycine (Gly) was performed on a metal- phenolic network (MPN) of copper (Cu2+) and gallic acid (GA) to increase its adsorption capacity. Herein, we reported a one-step synthesis method of MPN, which was developed according to the metal–ligand complexation principle. The nitrogen grafted CuGA (Ng-CuGA) MPN was obtained by reacting Cu2+, GA, and Gly in an aqueous solution at a molar ratio of 1:1:1 and a pH of 8. Several physicochemical measurements, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N2 sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA), were done on Ng-CuGA to elucidate its characteristics. The analysis revealed that the Ng-CuGA has non-uniform spherical shaped morphology with a pore volume of 0.56 cc/g, a pore size of 23.25 nm, and thermal stability up to 205 °C. The applicational potential of the Ng-CuGA was determined based on its adsorption capacity against methylene blue (MB). The Ng-CuGA was able to adsorb 190.81 mg MB per g adsorbent at a pH of 6 and temperature of 30 °C, which is 1.53 times higher than the non-grafted CuGA. Detailed assessment of Ng-CuGA adsorption properties revealed their pH- and temperature-dependent nature. The adsorption capacity and affinity were found to decrease at a higher temperature, demonstrating the exothermic adsorption behavior.

Sub-micrometer particles of β-Bi2O3 were successfully synthesized via a one-step self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method for the first time. The experiments were carried out in the air at room temperature. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In this study, three experiments were designed to optimize the heat source, Bi source and additive for the reaction system. Results showed that the system composed of Al, Bi2O3 and Al2O3 powders could synthesize monodisperse high-purity β-Bi2O3 spherical particles with the average diameter of 369 nm and the as-prepared products kept stable after being exposed in air for one month. Then, the influences of the ratio of the three components on system were investigated. Interestingly, it was found that a slight adjustment on the ratio of Al:Bi2O3:Al2O3 had significant effects on the reactions happening in a system. Specifically, when the amount of Al2O3 exceeds the molar ratio of 2:1:1 (Al:Bi2O3:Al2O3), it is difficult to ignite the reaction system; when the amount is less than 2:1:0.5, the reaction system becomes too violent to obtain pure products. However, there are no obvious differences on the morphology and structure of final products with the two ratios because of few changes in adiabatic temperature. Preparation of β-Bi2O3 by SHS technique enjoying many advantages, such as high efficiency, inexpensive experimental equipment and simple processes, would has a promising prospect for industrial application.

The adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Cd(II) onto a magnetic lignin-based nanomaterial (MLN) was investigated in detail. The results showed that the adsorption isotherm was better described by the Langmuir model, showing monolayer adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 135.7 and 156.5 mg/g. The kinetics fit the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamics showed the enthalpy change of the adsorption for Cu(II) and Cd(II) was 24.12 and 36.49 kJ/mol, with entropy change of 85.12 and 130.3 J/mol·K, respectively; thus, the adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous in the range of 25°C–45°C. Additionally, the adsorbent was easy to regenerate. This study shows that MLN is a capable, sustainable absorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Adsorption is one of the most effective and economical method to treat heavy metals in water. In this study, we utilize waste chicken eggshells as biosorbent to adsorb Ni(II). Furthermore we study the effect of eggshell calcination on its adsorption performance. The effect of calcination on the characteristic of eggshell was observed using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). It could be observed that CaCO3 in eggshell was converted into CaO, and from SEM images the calcined eggshell became more porous than the uncalcined one. The effect of various parameters such as initial Ni(II) solution pH and initial Ni(II) concentration was investigated using batch adsorption experiments. The data obtained then fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The best pH for Ni(II) adsorption was found to be 6. From Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich, it was found that calcined eggshells gave 60 times higher maximum adsorption capacity then uncalcined one. This increase was possible due to more porous structure of calcined eggshells. The adsorption process was found to be exothermic and physisorption. This result was confirmed by the decrease of % removal with increase of temperature. Furthermore, Langmuir isotherm was found to be the best model, indicating adsorption of Ni(II) was monolayer adsorption on homogenous surface.

Abstract Contaminant arsenic(V) has been regarded as one of the top-priority pollutants to remove from water. In this contribution, different mesoporous Y-Al binary oxides were prepared by the wet impregnation method via varying the molar ratio of Y/Al in the range of 0.029 to 0.116. The manufactured materials were employed as adsorbent to separate arsenic(V) from water. The adsorbent was characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, point of zero charge (PZC) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Furthermore, the effect of experimental parameters on adsorption performance was evaluated by batch experiments, including the molar ratio of Y/Al, adsorbent dosages and contact time, initial concentration, initial pH and temperature. The results indicated that the adsorbent presented an optimal adsorption performance for As(V) uptake when the molar ratio of Y/Al was 0.058. The obtained experimental data were best fitted by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity was 60.93 mg/g at pH 6.6 ± 0.1. Additionally, according to the results of adsorption kinetics, it was pronounced that adsorption process was complied with pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption thermodynamic suggested that the adsorption of As(V) is endothermic and spontaneous natural. Moreover, based on the results of FT-IR, PZC and initial pH, it is demonstrated that ion-exchange and electrostatic interaction were the dominating adsorption mechanism.

High aspect ratio silver nanowires (AgNWs) with ultra-long length and thin diameter were synthesized through bromine ion (Br−)-assisted one-step synthesis method. The bromine ions were used as pivotal passivating agent. When the molar ratio of Br−/Cl− was 1:4, the average diameter of AgNWs was as low as ~40 nm, the average length was as high as ~120 μm, and the aspect ratio reached 2500. Networks of AgNWs were fabricated using as-prepared high-quality AgNWs as conducting material and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as the adhesive polymer. As a result, a low sheet resistance down to ~3.5 Ω sq−1 was achieved with a concomitant transmittance of 88.20% and a haze of 4.12%. The ultra-low sheet resistance of conductive film was attributed to the long and thin AgNWs being able to form a more effective network. The adhesion of the AgNWs to the substrate was 0/5B (ISO/ASTM). The insights given in this paper provide the key guidelines for bromine ion-assisted synthesis of long and thin AgNWs, and further designing low-resistance AgNW-based conductive film for optoelectronic devices.

The paper evaluates the effectiveness of the use of graphene nanostructures in the purification of lead (II) ions to improve the ecological situation of water bodies. The mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the adsorption process were analyzed using empirical models of isotherms at temperatures of 298, 303, 313 and 323 K, which correspond to the following order (based on the correlation coefficient): Langmuir (0.99) > Temkin (0.97) > Dubinin – Radushkevich (0.90). The maximum adsorption capacity of the material corresponds to the range from 230 to 260 mg/g. We research the equilibrium at the level of thermodynamic parameter estimates, which indicates the spontaneity of the process, the endothermic nature and structure change of graphene modified with phenol-formaldehyde resin during the adsorption of lead (II) ions, leading to an increase in the disorder of the system.

Soybean dreg is a by-product of soybean products production, with a large consumption in China. Low utilization value leads to random discarding, which is one of the important sources of urban pollution. In this work, porous biochar was synthesized using a one-pot method and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) with low-cost soybean dreg (SD) powder as the carbon precursor to investigating the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). The prepared samples were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), elemental analyzer (EA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained SDB-K-3 showed a high specific surface area of 1620 m2 g−1, a large pore volume of 0.7509 cm3 g−1, and an average pore diameter of 1.859 nm. The results indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of SDB-K-3 to MB could reach 1273.51 mg g−1 at 318 K. The kinetic data were most consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption behavior was more suitable for the Langmuir isotherm equation. This study demonstrated that the porous biochar adsorbent can be prepared from soybean dreg by high value utilization, and it could hold significant potential for dye wastewater treatment in the future.
