To explore the effects of preparation process on the mechanical properties of fiber reinforced tubes in radial direction, the closed ring method was applied to assess the elastic modulus and bending strength of GFRP and CFRP prepared by winding method and pultrusion method, respectively. The results indicate that there are two obvious differences between the winding tube and the pultrusion tube: i) the elastic modulus and bending strength of the winding tube for two materials are larger than that of the pultrusion tube. It should be attributed to the position of materials under stress: the former is the fibers while the latter is the matrix; ii) the failure mode for the winding tube is brittle fracture while elastic-plastic fracture is for the pultrusion tube. Compared with other experimental methods, the results of the closed ring method are accurate and reliable, which is demonstrated to be a potential method to evaluate the mechanical properties of fiber tubes in radial direction rapidly and conveniently.

The article presents the study of alumina nanoparticles’ (nanofibers) concentration effect on the strength properties of pure nickel. The samples were obtained by spark plasma sintering of previously mechanically activated metal powders. The dependence of the grain size and the relative density of compacts on the number of nanofibers was investigated. It was found that with an increase in the concentration of nanofibers, the average size of the matrix particles decreased. The effects of the nanoparticle concentration (0.01–0.1 wt.%) on the elastic modulus and tensile strength were determined for materials at 25 °C, 400 °C, and 750 °C. It was shown that with an increase in the concentration of nanofibers, a 10–40% increase in the elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength occurred. A comparison of the mechanical properties of nickel in a wide range of temperatures, obtained in this work with materials made by various technologies, is carried out. A description of nanofibers’ mechanisms of influence on the structure and mechanical properties of nickel is given. The possible impact of impurity phases on the properties of nickel is estimated. The tendency of changes in the mechanical properties of nickel, depending on the concentration of nanofibers, is shown.

Attempt to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics, a dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics that mimic the characteristics of nature bone were fabricated. Experimental results show that the dense/porous structured β-TCP bioceramics demonstrated excellent mechanical properties with compressive strength up to 74 MPa and elastic modulus up to 960 MPa, which could be tailored by the dense/porous cross-sectional area ratio obeying the rule of exponential growth. The interface between the dense and porous bioceramics is connected compactly and tightly with some micropores distributed in the matrix of both porous and dense counterparts. The dense/porous structure of β-TCP bioceramics may provide an effective way to increase the mechanical properties of porous bioceramics for bone regeneration at weight bearing sites.

The CNT/B4C composite with Al2O3 additive was fabricated by hot-pressing following extrusion molding of a CNT/B4C paste, and mechanical properties of the obtained composite were investigated. Many CNTs in the composite aligned along the extrusion direction from SEM observation. 3-points bending strength of the composite was slightly lower than that of the monolithic B4C. Elastic modulus and Vickers hardness of the composite drastically decreased with CNT addition. Fracture toughness of the composite was higher than that of the monolithic B4C.

Two types of composites:(1) pineapple fabric reinforced polyester resin (Pineapple/PR) and (2) jute fabric reinforced polyester resin (Jute/PR) were prepared and the mechanical properties investigated for various gamma radiation doses ranging from 100-500 krad. Properties like tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation-at-break, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength were increased significantly by 19%, 32%, 45%, 32%, 47% and 20%, respectively, at a dose of 300 krad for Pineapple/PR, and by 47%, 49%, 42%, 45%, 52% and 65%, respectively, at a dose of 200 krad for the Jute/PR composite in comparison to the non-irradiated composite. Gamma radiation improved the mechanical properties, but overdoses of radiation even caused a reduction in them.

E-glass fiber mat reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)-based composites were fabricated by conventional hand lay-up technique. The fiber content was varied from 5 to 50% by weight. Mechanical properties (tensile and bending) of the fabricated composites were investigated. The tensile strength (TS) of the 5% and 50% fiber reinforced composites was 32 MPa and 72 MPa, respectively. Similarly, tensile modulus, bending strength and bending modulus of the composites were increased by the increase of fiber loading. Interfacial properties of the composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results revealed that the interfacial bond between fiber and matrix was excellent. Ti-50Al alloy and Ti-47Al-3W alloy and its composites have been prepared by reactive arc melting technique using elemental powders. Composites have been reinforced using 3.5, 10 and 18 vol% of Ti2AlC in the matrix of TiAl with and without addition of W and C. By the addition of tungsten and carbon to TiAl alloy, we have produced composites that are reinforced randomly by reacted rod like Ti2AlC particles with fine precipitate of Ti2AlC particles and B2 particles. Compared to Ti-50Al alloys, the Ti-47Al-3W alloy and its composites have superior mechanical properties like bending strength, hardness, fracture toughness and erosion. Ti-47Al-3W/3.5 vol% Ti2AlC has excellent erosion resistance because of the dispersion of fine Ti2AlC and B2 particles in the matrix.

Jute fabrics reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)-based composites were prepared by conventional hand lay-up technique. Different proportions (5 to 50% by weight) of fibre content was used in preparation of the composite. Tensile Strength (TS), Tensile Modulus (TM), Bending Modulus (BM), Bending Strength (BS), Impact Strength (IS) of the fabricated composites were studied. Upon each addition of fiber content in the matrix, mechanical properties of the composites were increased. The Tensile Strength (TS) of the 5% and 50% fiber reinforced composites was 18 MPa and 42 MPa respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed interfacial properties of the composites and it was revealed that the bond between fiber and matrix was excellent.

Spodumene, which is a lithium alumina silicate, has been used as a raw material in the production of thermal shock resistant whitewares and sanitarywares. The presence of spodumene results in enhancement of mullitization and imparts better physical and mechanical properties to ceramics. In this study, the influence of Lithium alumina silicate phases on the mechanical properties of standard porcelain stoneware body was investigated. Especially solid-solid reactions were observed between spodumene and quartz or spodumene and clay. These solid-solid reactions bring about a newly formed lithium alumina silicate (LAS) phases. Spodumene allows the development of a low viscosity liquid phase and results in a decrease in closed porosity, also with increase in bulk density, bending strength and elastic modulus.

The melting mixing was applied in the preparation of Multiwalled carbon nanotubes/Polycarbonate (MWCNTs/PC) nanocomposites. MWCNTs/PC nanocomposites with different MWCNTs contents were prepared under different injection conditions. The mechanical property of nanocomposites was comparatively investigated. The results demonstrated that: the tensile property of the nanocomposites was slightly improved by MWCNTs content increasing; but as the MWCNTs contents went on to increase to 10wt%, the tensile strength and bending strength were obviously decreased about 35% and 47%, respectively, but the impact strength and hardness were increased. The center hardness of MWCNTs/PC nanocomposites was greater than the surface hardness. Besides, the changes on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were studies by changing the injection conditions. By Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observation, the microstructure and morphology of nanocomposites were analyzed, revealing that the center of the nanocomposite distributed more MWNTs, and the injection conditions would affect the MWNTs’ dispersion in the matrix and the interfacial interaction between MWCNTs and PC.

ABSTRACTThe study of organic-inorganic nanocomposites has become relevant in recent years since these materials exhibit synergistic properties derived from the two components. Thermosetting polymers like epoxies that have high mechanical properties provide a baseline for further improvement with the addition of nanoclay particles. These nanocomposites can be used as the matrix of a fiber reinforced composite and lead to higher matrix dominated mechanical properties including elastic modulus, strength and fracture toughness. This study concentrates on the mechanical and thermoviscoelastic properties in the glassy regime of nanocomposites prepared by direct mixing. The elastic modulus of the nanocomposites was found to improve with respect to the pure epoxy modulus at the expense of both tensile strength and ductility regardless of clay content. The glass transition temperature was also found to decrease as well. The morphology of the nanocomposites was studied and correlated with the aforementioned properties.
