Background: Obesity has been recognised as a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of central obesity [using waist–hip ratio (WHR) as an indicator] and the correlation between central obesity and blood pressure (BP) in adults seen in a Nigerian tertiary health facility.Materials and methods: The study was a cross-sectional design carried out between February and November 2015 at the General Outpatient Clinic of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Nigeria. A total of 482 consenting adults aged 16–40 years formed the study population. Consecutive sampling was used in the recruitment of subjects, whereas data were collected by the use of an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the study population was 25.37 ± 5.49, whereas the mean WHR for men and women was 0.83 ± 0.04 and 0.82 ± 0.05, respectively. The prevalence of central obesity in the study population was 39.4% (n = 190). Female respondents had a higher prevalence (59.2%) than male respondents (8.5%), and the relationship between central obesity and sex was statistically significant (p = 0.001). Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between WHR and BP (diastolic BP: r = 0.122, p = 0.008; systolic BP: r = 0.015, p = 0.742) in both sexes. Obese respondents were observed to be more likely to develop hypertension than the non-obese respondents. Conclusion: This study showed a correlation between central obesity and BP in adults aged 16–40 years.

Aims: To measure the waist circumference of Sudanese adults in Khartoum Locality and its relationship to blood pressure and lifestyle  during celebration of international day of hypertension in May 2016 . Study Design: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Place of the Celebration: Khartoum Locality at Alsahaa Alkhadraa (The Green Park). Methodology: A total of 364 adult participants, 196 men and 168 women were interviewed using structured questionnaire. Blood pressure (BP) was measured considering hypertension as ≥ 140 mmHg and ≥ 90 mmHg for systole and diastole BP respectively. Waist circumference was measured using an anthropometric measuring tape at cut-off point of 94 cm and 80 cm for men and women respectively. Data was managed by SPSS version 20 and Chi-square test at 95% CL was used to test the association between waist circumference, blood pressure and life style characteristics. Results: Age distribution of the study population showed 48.2% females and 45.4% males in the middle age group (38-57 years). Two thirds of the study population were hypertensive, 62.8% of males and 64.3% of females. The mean waist circumference of men was 97.82 cm + 16.7, mean Systolic BP was 127 + 22 and mean Diastolic BP was 85 + 15. The mean waist circumference of women was 99.31 + 16.2, mean Systolic was 128 + 24 and mean Diastolic BP was 84 +17. Abnormal waist circumference was found in 61.2% of males and 86.9% of females. Fifty nine (30.1%) of the males and 86 (51.2%) of the females with abnormal waist circumference were hypertensive. The association between abnormal waist circumference and high blood pressure was significant among both sexes, P value = 0.001. Physical exercise and fat and salt foods were not significantly associated waist circumference in both men and women. Conclusion: Two thirds of women and men in the celebrating areas were hypertensive.  Half of women and one third of men were significantly hypertensive and having abnormal waist circumference. Doing physical exercise, avoiding fat and salt foods was insignificantly associated with normal waist circumference. Large survey with representative sample is needed to estimate the real Sudanese waist circumference.

Objectives: To determine the accuracy of sphygmomanometers (SPHYGs) from a metropolitan EMS system and quantitate the mis-triage of adult blunt trauma patients based on erroneous systolic blood pressure (SBP) readings.Methods-A: A cross-sectional, convenient sample of 150 SPHYGs was checked for accuracy using industry standards. Mean high and low deviations were calculated at 90 mmHg.Methods-B: Retrospectively, a frequency distribution of the initial SBPs of all blunt trauma patients, age ≥21, seen in 1994 was plotted to characterize our study population. The numbers of patients potentially over- or under-triaged were identified when their reported SBP was corrected for using the mean high and low deviation plus 2 SDs.Results-A: Overall, 25.3% of the SPHYGs were inaccurate. At 90 mmHg, 28.0% (42/150) were inaccurate with 16.7% (7/42) high by 4.6±1.5 mmHg and 81.0% (34/42) low by 6.2±4.2 mmHg; one was inoperable.Results-B: 1,005 adult blunt trauma patients were evaluated; 61 were eliminated: 35 had initial SBPs of 0 mmHg and 26 had no SBP recorded (n = 944). The mean initial SBP was 138 ±30mmHg, and 3.8% (36/944) of the patients had SBPs <90 mmHg. Potentially, 2.0% (19/944) of the patients were undertriaged (initial erroneously high SBP reading 90–98 mmHg) and 2.5% (24/944) over-triaged (initial erroneously low SBP reading 74–90 mmHg).

Abstract Objective: Our objective was to assess a 10-yr change in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) among Finnish men and women. Design and Subjects: Two cross-sectional population surveys were performed in Finland in 1992 and 2002. A total of 3495 participants aged 45–64 yr were included in the analysis. Results: In both years the metabolic syndrome was more common among men than women. In men the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome tended to increase slightly between 1992 and 2002, from 48.8–52.6% (P = 0.139) based on the NCEP definition, and from 51.4–55.6% based on the IDF definition (P = 0.102). In women the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome increased significantly from 32.2–39.1% based on the NCEP definition (P = 0.003), and from 38.0–45.3% based on the IDF definition (P = 0.002). In both sexes the prevalence of high blood pressure decreased, but the abnormalities in glucose metabolism increased between 1992 and 2002. The prevalence of central obesity increased in women between 1992 and 2002. Conclusions: In Finland the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, based both on the NCEP and IDF definitions, is higher in men than women. However, the increase in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, from 1992–2002, was significant only among women.

The aim of the research is to determine the relationship between Burnout Syndrome in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic and the virtualization of education in Colombian official school teachers during the year 2020. The study responds to the mixed approach and sequential design. In its quantitative phase it was deductive-hypothetical, applied, with a non-experimental cross-sectional design, and in its qualitative phase it was inductive, applied with a phenomenological-hermeneutic design. The data collection techniques used were the survey and the interview. The study population consisted of 1093 teachers from official schools in Floridablanca. For the quantitative approach, a non-probabilistic accidental sample of 110 teachers was used, and for the qualitative approach, a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 10 teachers was used. Among the final considerations it can be said that there is an inverse mean correlation between Burnout syndrome and the virtualization of education in this time of the Covid-19 pandemic; it is therefore considered that the effects of the pandemic have maximized the effects of the aforementioned syndrome on educational actors.

Aim. To investigate the relationship between high blood pressure (HBP) and obesity in Egyptian adolescents.Methods. A cross-sectional study of 1500 adolescents (11–19 years) in Alexandria, Egypt, was conducted. Resting BP was measured and measurements were categorized using the 2004 fourth report on blood pressure screening recommendations. Additional measures included height, weight, and waist and hip circumferences. Obesity was determined based on BMI, waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) indicators. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were used as measures of association between BP and obesity.Results. Prevalence rates of prehypertension and hypertension were 5.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Obesity was seen in 34.6%, 16.1%, 4.5%, and 16.7% according to BMI, WHR, WC, and WHtR, respectively. Adjusting for confounders, HBP was significantly associated with overall obesity based on BMI (OR=2.18, 95%,CI=1.38-3.44) and central obesity based on WC(OR=3.14, 95%,CI=1.67-5.94).Conclusion. Both overall obesity and central obesity were significant predictors of HBP in Egyptian adolescents.
