Data on seed productivity and peculiarities of reproduction of Schisandra chinensis under the conditions of introduction at the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NBG) are discussed. The study was carried out in 2016–2018 on experimental fields and in the NBG laboratory using plants and seeds of Ukrainian selection S. chinensis ‘Sadovyi-1’. Sections were examined with the microscope Carl Zeiss STEMI 2000-S. Qualitative and quantitative composition of higher fatty acids has been identified by НР-6890 chromatograph. It was found that S. chinensis of local reproduction have a much lower percentage of the seeds without embryo (about 10 %) compared to those of natural origin (30–90 %). Because of long-term storage of S. chinensis seeds the biochemical transformations take place: the content of fats and proteins decreased from 37.5 to 28.0 %, and from 19.7 to 11.2 %, respectively, the acid number of oil increased from 2.42 to 5.70 mg KOH/g, and its iodine value decreased from 32.5 to 30.3 g І2 / 100 g after storage of seeds during ten months. Fatty oil of S. chinensis seeds has a high linoleic acid content, which reaches 80–81.1 % of the total content of fatty acids. The storage of seeds under different illumination and temperature conditions resulted in minor changes in the acid number of the oil and the quantitative content of fatty acids. The optimal storage conditions of seeds (without access to light and at the temperature of +4 °С) were determined. Such storage conditions reduce the intensity of oxidative processes in the seeds, ensuring the highest germination rate. The optimal ways of S. chinensis reproduction by seeds are the spring sowing of stratified seeds and autumn sowing of freshly reaped seeds, which gain natural stratification. Using these ways resulted in 65 % and 63 % of seeds germination, respectively.

Conservation seed banks are essential for ex-situ conservation of genetic biodiversity. These institutions are especially relevant for threatened species and play a vital role in their conservation by preserving genetic material. However, samples deposited in the seed banks must germinate when necessary to use them (i.e., recovery plans, etc.). This study uses four accessions of the endemic endangered species from Gran Canaria Island (Canary Islands), Isoplexis isabelliana (Webb & Berthel.) Masf. (Scrophulariaceae). Germination tests were carried out to measure seed viability through time and the possible impact of seed storage on their viability. These accessions have been kept in the seed bank for four months to thirty years under different storage conditions. Germination results differed for seeds after 45 days of exposition using 16 hours light and 8 hours darkness at 17 °C. Accessions kept in the seed bank, independently of storage, showed a high germination percentage (89%). Whereas the accessions with rough storage conditions showed a 0% germination rate. The results highlighted the good state of conservation of the material deposited in the Seed Bank of the Botanical Garden "Viera y Clavijo" and the reliability of the temperature and humidity conditions in which the seeds of I. isabelliana have been stored. We consider these results as momentous since several natural populations of I. isabelliana has been affected by the last forest fire on the island.

This study was carried out to find material basis of which effect germination rate ofSalvia miltiorrhizaBge seeds in different years and in different areas. The results can be used in quality identification and advising storage conditions. Routine method were used to study the basic qualities, such as physical purity, weight of 100 seeds, seed moisture and germination. GC-MS were used to detect fatty acids and UV spectrophotometer was used to detect reducing sugar. The germination and viability of new seeds were much higher than that of aged. Weight of 100 seeds, seed moisture, fatty acids of same origin new seeds were higher than that of aged. However there was no correlation between different areas. Content of reducing sugar of same origin new seeds were higher than that of aged, also there were no correlation between different areas. Unsaturated fatty acids content of the new seeds was 80.90% which was much higher than that of aged. Linoleic acid was the main Unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acid content was 19.10% which was much lower than that of aged. Palmitic acid was the main saturated fatty acids. Data showed that unsaturated acids were auto oxidized to saturated acids in the process of storage. Germination rate was decreased as storage time prolonged.

One of the ways to solve the problem of deteriorating human health can be the widespread use of plant products, among which the most valuable are vegetable oils, including amaranth oil. It contains a complex of vitamins, micro- and macroelements, unsaturated fatty acids and essential amino acids and a unique natural biologically active substance, squalene, which performs a number of key functions in the human body. However, post-harvest processing of amaranth grain, in particular drying, and its subsequent storage in different conditions can significantly impair its valuable natural properties. The research presents the results of studies of changes in the chemical composition and microbiological characteristics of amaranth grain in the process of drying and storage in different conditions, which will ensure its guaranteed quality during storage. The effect of drying amaranth to humidity of 9% at temperatures of 50 °С and 60 °С , has been studied on the total amount of saponified substances, content of squalene, linolenic, linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids, which were determined by gas – liquid chromatography. It has been found that after drying amaranth grain there is a decrease in the content of saponified substances by 10% and squalene by 14% compared to freshly harvested grain, and the content of free fatty acids in the unsaponified fraction remains unchanged. When storing amaranth during the year at temperatures of +5 °С, +15 °С and +25 °С and relative humidity of 55% and 75%. Changes in the content of such basic indicators of grain quality as protein, starch, fiber, fat, ash, as well as acid number and acidity of fat were determined. At the same time, the protein content decreased by 13.5%, starch by 8.7%, fat by 29.0%. The content of fiber and ash has not changed. Under the same storage conditions, there was also a significant deterioration in the quality of fat -acid number increased by 6.9 times, the acidity of the alcohol extract by 2.9 times. When storing amaranth at a temperature of +5 °С and a relative humidity of 55%, the decrease in the content of the main components was significantly smaller and amounted to 8.1% for protein, 2.9% for starch and 4.2% for fat. Under the same conditions, the activity of microorganisms is significantly reduced, which allowed to recommend these storage conditions for industrial use.

Apples are seasonal fruits, and thus after harvesting apples of optimal picking maturity, it is important to prepare them properly for storage and to ensure proper storage conditions in order to minimize changes in the chemical composition and commercial quality of the apples. We studied the quantitative composition of triterpenic compounds in the whole apple, apple peel and apple flesh samples before placing them in the controlled atmosphere (CA) chambers, and at the end of the experiment, 8 months later. HPLC analysis showed that highest total amount of triterpenic compounds (1.99 ± 0.01 mg g−1) was found in the whole apple samples of the ‘Spartan’ cultivar stored under variant VIII (O2—20%, CO2—3%, N2—77%) conditions. Meanwhile, the highest amount of triterpenic compounds (11.66 ± 0.72 mg g−1) was determined in the apple peel samples of the ‘Auksis’ cultivar stored under variant II (O2—5%, CO2—1%, N2—94%) conditions. In the apple peel samples of the ‘Auksis’ cultivar stored under variant I (O2—21%, CO2—0.03%, N2—78.97%) conditions, the amount of individual triterpenic compounds (ursolic, oleanolic, corosolic, and betulinic acids) significantly decreased compared with amount determined before the storage. Therefore, in the apple flesh samples determined triterpenic compounds are less stable during the storage under controlled atmosphere conditions compared with triterpenic compounds determined in the whole apple and apple peel samples.

A method for determining one of the main physical and chemical indicators of the quality of liquid rapeseed lecithins (RL) acid number using nuclear magnetic relaxation (NMR) was developed. Samples of the liquid RL with values of acid number 19,3 27,8 and 36,5 mg KOH/g has been the object of research. Samples of liquid RL were used to determine the optimal ratio of mass fractions in the system of RL aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide concentration of 1,0 mol/dm3, providing complete neutralization of free fatty acids and phospholipids exhibiting acidic properties. It was found that to achieve stable results of measurements of the analytical parameter the amplitude of the NMR signals of soap protons, quantitatively characterizing the content of free fatty acids and phospholipids, the preparation of liquid RL samples is necessary: the ratio of the mass fractions of the RL carbon tetrachloride system as 1 : 4, respectively, the RL sodium hydroxide system as 1 : 1, respectively the mixing time of the RL carbon tetrachloride system is 2 min. A linear relationship between acid number fluid RL and the amplitude of the NMR signals of protons of soap As detected: Acid number 2,226 0,900 As

Forage grass seed quality is influenced by plant genetics as well as seed density, storage conditions, age of seed, and endophyte infection status. We used eight seed lots of tall fescue (three cultivars, with natural endophytes, endophyte-free, or novel endophyte) to test the effect of seed density on germination and seedling vigour. Seed lots were separated into nine density fractions using a cylinder air column. Thousand seed weight values were determined. Three runs of four replications of plots consisting of 25 seeds of each entry were seeded in greenhouse experiments to determine seedling mass at 8 weeks after planting. Early germination counts as well as laboratory germination tests indicated significant differences among weight classes in speed of germination as well as seedling vigour. The lightest fraction of seed clearly contained inferior seed, but higher density seed lots tended to have better germination and seedling vigour than lower density ones. Keywords: seed density, seedling vigour, germination, tall fescue, endophyte

n the current paper, we aimed to analyze the way in which packing (different polyethylene types) influence the quality of pasteurized melange during storage, packing being realized in units of 1 kg (Tetra Pak) (batch Lexp-1) and units of 5 kg (Bag in box) (batch Lexp-2). Products were stored during a period of 28 days at a temperature of +4C, qualitative determinations being realized in first day (day 0), at 7 days, at 14 days, 21 days and in day 28 of storage. Were effectuated a sensorial examination and chemical analysis were was established the content in dry matter (%), water (%), proteins (%), content in essential amino acids (isoleucine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine) and non-essential amino acids (alanine, histidine, glycine, serine) (mg/100g) as well as the content in lipids (%) establishing their profile by identification of some saturated fatty acids (16:0 mg/100g and 18:0 mg/100g) and unsaturated fatty acids (16:1 mg/100g and 18:1 mg/100g). After sensorial examinations, the first modifications were observed at the checking effectuated in day 21 for batch Lexp-2, the obtained score being of 18 points, and at checking effectuated in day 28 was given a score of 18 points for melange belonging to batch Lexp-1 and only 14 points for melange from batch Lexp-2. Differences were recorded also in case of chemical composition of products, so for protein content at batch Lexp-1 in first checking day was obtained a mean of 12.7300.24% and at batch Lexp-2 12.6140.22%. Differences between those two batches were insignificant (p[0.05). In case of fat content, at the end of storage period was obtained a mean of 11.2560.06% for batch Lexp-1 and 11.2440.11% for batch Lexp-2, differences being insignificant (p [ 0.05). Regarding the profile of amino acids and fatty acids, the mean values obtained during whole storage period oscillated from one stage to another, but the differences between those two batches were insignificant (p [ 0.05). Pasteurized egg melange suffers certain sensorial modifications during storage, especially on consistency and colouring, modifications which are accentuated mainly by storage conditions. Type of polyethylene utilized for this product hadnt influenced the nutritive qualities of product.

ABSTRACT The fatty acid composition of cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides of the serum has been studied in groups of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid women and also in control material matched for age. In hyperthyroidism, a decrease in the proportions of linoleic acid and an increase in the proportions of some saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids were observed. When absolute concentrations were considered, it appeared that the decrease in linoleic acid was almost equivalent to the entire decrease in total fatty acids in the serum of the hyperthyroid patients. In hypothyroidism no changes were noted in the proportions of linoleic, saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids, and the absolute concentrations reflected the general increase in serum lipids. It is believed that these findings may be explained by the changes in lipid turnover which are known to occur in disturbances of thyroid function. In hyperthyroidism, they lead to a linoleic acid deficiency, while a sparing effect must be operating in hypothyroidism. The finding of relatively high linoleic acid values combined with hyperlipaemia in hypothyroidism seems to be characteristic of the condition, since other types of hyperlipaemia are almost invariably combined with low percentages of linoleic acid. Results regarding arachidonic and eicosatrienoic acid are consistent with increased synthesis in hyperthyroidism, and decreased synthesis in hypothyroidism.
