This study aimed to evaluate the learning styles among healthcare students and to study the relationship with their academic achievement. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 137 healthcare students from six different courses. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire and developed based on the original visual, aural/auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic (VARK) assessment. The questionnaire was divided into two sections: the demographic status and the learning style perspective. A total of 119 respondents (86.8%) has chosen unimodal as their learning styles, while the rest of the 18 respondents (13.2%) choose multimodal as their preferred learning method. Among the unimodal learning styles, visual (32%) and reading (26%) were most preferred among respondents. The auditory and kinesthetic methods of learning were less and accounted for 10% to 20%. Notably, in multimodal learning styles preferences, 4% of students prefer a combination learning style of visual and kinesthetic methods. There was no significant relationship between learning styles and academic achievement using Pearson’s Chi-square test (p>0.05). Hence, both were independent of one another. Hence, some of the dominant learning styles needed to be considered based on their future profession.

Learning style has been considered as one of determining factors for learning processes. This study aimed at observing the correlation between students’ learning style and performance of Nigerian students in biology. The sample of this study consisted of 100 students which were randomly selected from the secondary schools in Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State, Nigeria. The two validated instrument used for data collection were Grasha & Reichmann’s Student Learning Scale and VAK/VARK Learning Style. The data gained were analyzed using percentage, Pearson correlation, and Chi-Square test. The study findings indicated that: (i) there was a negative correlation between students’ academic performance and visual (-0.061) and kinesthetic learning style (-0.50), as well as positive correlation between the performance and auditory learning style (0.108). (ii) There were no significant differences between the study of learning styles, either visual (t(99) = 1.60, p = 0.11), auditory (t(99) = 1.33, p = 0.18), or kinesthetic (t(99) = 0.59, p = 0.55), of male and female biology students’ performance. Thus, it is suggested that teachers choose the most proper learning methods which accommodate the students’ need based on their learning styles.

Background: The significance of understanding one’s individual personality is crucial to performance in study and at work and to one’s communication with others. This study aims to evaluate the distribution of personality types amongst medical students and to study the relationship between each personality type and academic achievement. Methods: This cross-sectional study was used. Total of 414 medical students from king Abdelaziz university in Jeddah participated. Data was collected by using validated DiSC assessment questionnaire. Data were entered by electronic questionnaire. A chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 148 (36%) students belonged to C personality type. A total of 102 (24%) belonged to D type. The S type was found dominant amongst 127 (31%) students. Finally, 37 (9%) of the students conformed to the I type. A chi-square test was conducted to assess the relationship between academic achievement and DiSC assessment which revealed no significance P value (0.08).Conclusions: The highest percentage of medical students conformed to the C personality type, whilst the lowest percentage showed a tendency toward the I personality type. These results would be helpful for the undergraduate students or high school graduate in which some of them may have the belief that only certain kind of personalities would fit appropriate in the medical field or succeed. We recommend for further studies to be carried out using the DiSC model on students from other specialty rather than medical filed, as engineering, to see their personality type. This may help students in freshman year to choose a specialty that suit their personality type.

Abstract Objective Antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy remains the primary form of treatment for epilepsy, noncompliance to which can result in breakthrough seizure, emergency department visits, fractures, head injuries, and increased mortality. Various tools like self-report measures, pill-counts, medication refills, and frequency of seizures can assess compliance with varying extent. Thus, assessment of compliance with AEDs is crucial to be studied. Materials and Methods Compliance was assessed using pill-count and Morisky medication adherence scale (MMAS) during home visits. A pill-count (pills dispensed–pills remaining)/(pills to be consumed between two visits) value of 0.85 to ≤1.15 was recorded as appropriate compliance. Underdose (<0.85) and overdose (>1.15) was labeled as noncompliance. Score of 1 was given to each positive answer in MMAS. Score of ≥1 was labeled as noncompliance.Statistical analysis: Relationship of demographic factors between compliant and noncompliant patients was analyzed using Chi-square test (SPSS version 21.0, IBM). Rest of the data was analyzed with the help of descriptive statistics using Microsoft Excel. p< 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Out of 105 patients, 54 patients were noncompliant with both pill-count and MMAS. 10 patients were noncompliant with pill-count only, while 10 were noncompliant with MMAS. Conclusion Both tools complement each other when used in combination, as use of a single tool was not able to completely detect compliance.
