Human environmental interactions during the Neolithization of the Ammer Valley: first results integrating paleo-ecological and bio-archaeological evidence

<p>The Upper Neckar and Ammer river valleys in southwestern Germany correspond to the southwestern limit of the overall distribution of the oldest Linear Bandkeramik (LBK) culture. More than 200 Neolithic sites are known from this region with one of the oldest sites located in the vicinity of the village Ammerbuch-Pfäffingen, around 10 km west of Tübingen, Germany. The archaeological record suggests that settlement activities occurred here between 7260 and 7110 cal BP (or 5310-5160 cal BC). Despite the various activities at the settling site itself, little is known about the environmental impact of the first settlers on the area, ranging from the introduction of farming and animal husbandry with impacts to the forests due to pasture and collection of wood, as well as possible control of water bodies. We here present the first results of a palynological study of two parallel, overlapping 8 m long sediment cores that were retrieved in 2018 from a shallow paleo-lake only a few hundred meters distant from the excavation site. The composite core allows environmental reconstruction of the area between 11540 and 7000 cal BP, based on six radiocarbon dates. Pollen analysis indicates mixed oak forests and an increase of light-demanding vegetation (i.e. <em>Quercus, Corylus, Betula</em>). Current analyses on micro- and macro-charcoal are going to reveal the natural or anthropogenic induced causes of paleo-fire events and Non-Pollen-Palynomorphs (NPP), including dung spores, unravel the possible presence of herbivores (including domestic ones) in the area. The results of the current study and its integration into the bioarchaeological record are relevant even beyond the region providing the usually rarely available paleoecological records from close proximity of an LBK site and thus deliver valuable insights on the environmental settings at the beginning of farming in central Europe.</p><p> </p>

ABSTRACT The biogas program implemented in Jandurau Village has an impact on the community. The community began to renovate the old cattle sheds in the village of Jandurau and herded wild cattle from the forest to be kept in said sheds. The construction of the sheds involved the Jandurau community by utilizing equipment and materials owned by the community along with assistance from Bank Indonesia (BI) West Papua. A supervising team from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Papua assisted to ensure the activity went smoothly. The article presents the results of an archaeoparasitological and palynological study of a sample taken from the sewage drain of the Chorgun Tower. This is a fortification on the territory of the village of Chernorechie (South-Western Crimea). According to archaeological research, the construction of the keep dates back to the third quarter of the 15th century. Four types of eggs of intestinal parasites infecting humans and synanthropic animals were identified in the sample. Regarding parasitic and infectious gastrointestinal diseases, human whipworm and roundworm eggs found in the sample are indicative of relatively unfavorable sanitary conditions of the fortification. Based on the features of the archaeoparasitological spectrum, it can be concluded that anthelminthic agents were used or food with antiparasitic effects against roundworms was consumed. The difficult sanitary and epidemiological situation was also complicated by synanthropic rodents, such as rats and domestic mice, which could be a constant source of dangerous infections in the Chorgun Keep. A palynological study of the contents of the sewage runoff made it possible to obtain additional information on the nutrition of people who used the latrine facilities in the Chorgun Keep. What is equally important is that the study demonstrates the possibilities of methods for the study of canalization as a source of bioarchaeological information.

Introduction. In domestic historiography for many decades personal subsidiary plots were viewed as some rudiment of a non-socialist form of farming in the country’s agricultural sector. In accordance with the political principles of party ideologists, most researchers in every possible way emphasized the futility of the personal subsidiary plots and the inevitability of their soon withering away. And at the beginning of the XXI century they re-main a kind of “islands” of small business in the countryside and the main form of earnings for the total mass of rural workers. The main objective of this study is a comprehensive analysis of the current state of personal subsidiary plots of the rural population of Tatarstan in the context of determining the main socio-economic indicators in relation to the study area; identification of the most important development parameters of this form of small business. Materials and Methods. The scientific study is based on source materials from various government departments (including the Tatarstan Statistical Office), newspaper and journal periodicals, as well as data from historical, economic and sociological literature. When writing the article, the author was guided by the principles of historicism, complexity and objectivity. The research is based on the methods of historical science: problem-chronological, comparative-historical, systemic, etc. Results. During the study, the current state and indicators of the development of personal subsidiary plots of the rural population of the Republic of Tatarstan were systematically reviewed, in particular, their participation in the structure of regional gross income. It has been established that the main branches of economic activity of peasant farmsteads are vegetable growing and productive animal husbandry. It is proved that the strengthening of the positions of large investors in the village led to the curtailment of certain branches of production of personal subsidiary plots and their transition to a consumer rate of management. Discussion and Conclusion. The intensive development of various forms of small business in the post-perestroika period, including personal subsidiary plots of the population, intensified the market diversification of the economy of the agricultural sector in general and of high-quality peasant farmsteads in particular. During the forced dismantling of the collective farm and state farm management systems and the formation of new forms of entrepreneurship, peas-ant farmsteads became not only the economic basis for the existence of the rural population, but also a form of self-preservation of many settlements.

The Hatchel site (41BW3) is a major prehistoric and protohistoric Caddo village and mound center on the Red River in Bowie County, Texas. The site was occupied by the Caddo from at least A.D. 1040 to the late 17 century. The earliest end of this age range is based on 2-sigma calibrated ages from radiocarbon dates recently obtained in the village areas. In 1691, A Spanish expedition led by Don Domingo Teran de los Rios explored the Red River area, and a detailed map was drawn of a Nasoni Caddo village that depicted a templo or temple mound at the western end of the village. That mound has been identified as the large earthen mound at the Hatchel site. The map also showed many houses, and associated outbuildings, from numerous individual compounds in the village. The village itself is believed to have extended several miles along the Red River.

Purwodadi village is one of the village landscapes that has interesting natural and cultural potential to be developed as objects and attractions of toursim village. However the problem in Purwodadi village is not yet identified the potential of the landscape that can be developed into a tourism village object. Village tourism is one of the components between provided, accommodation and supporting facilities provided in the structure of the community with the prevailing order in the village. The purpose of this study was to identify the potential of the Purwodadi village landscape as a tourism village. The method used in the study is focus group discussion (FGD). Based on the identification results show that the village landscape of Purwodadi has 22 types of objects and potential attractions consisting of natural and cultural tourism. Natural potentials that can be developed are beaches, islands, agriculture, and animal husbandry. While the cultural potential consists of the offerings, art, carnival, and historical objects.

<p>The development of sheep livestock is done as a comodity producer to meet the need of the meat. To increase the productivity of the sheep, the feed have a certain quality with the mix of worm flour. This research aims to determine the influence of the use of worm flour (Lumbricus rubellus) concerning to dry and organic matter digestibility lokal male sheeps feed. This research was conducted in the enclosure of research at the Faculty of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry Department of the Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta which is located in the Village Jatikuwung, Gondangrejo District, District Karanganyar. Research was conducted from December 28th, 2008 to February 22nd, 2009 using the 12 local male tail sheep with body weight on average 13.82 ± 0.73 kg / head. Feed given at 6% of body weight consist of a concentrate forage and comparison with 70:30 per cent (basic dry matter). Utilized of the concentrate made of a mixture that consist of bekatul, oilcake soybean, corn flour, worm flour, and premix while forage given a field grass. Feed treatment used field grass 70%, concentrate 30% (P0); field grass 70%, 28% concentrate, worm flour 2% (P1); field grass 70%, 26% concentrate, worm flour 4% (P2) and 70% field grass, 24% concentrate, worms flour 6% (P3). Experimental design used was the Complete Random Design (CRD) pattern, the direction of the 4-level treatment (P0, P1, P2, and P3). Each treatment consist of 3 test replications and the replications each of one local male sheep. Parameter observed: dry matter consumption (DMC), organic matter consumption (OMC), dry matter digestibility (DMD), and organic matter digestibility (OMD). Results of research indicate that the average of the four treatment (P0, P1, P2 and P3) respectively for the dry matter consumption 858.35, 876.57, 881.55 and 887.58 (grams/ head/ day), organic matter consumption 670.32, 682.04, 686.16 and 689.03 (grams/ head/ day), dry matter digestibility 55.17, 59.51, 57.19 and 58.84 percent and organic matter digestibility 66.28, 69.09, 67.21 and 68.12 percent. Variansi analysis results show that the dry matter consumption, organic matter consumption, dry matter digestibility, and organic matter digestibility is not significantly different (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion of this research is the use of worm flour (Lumbricus rubellus) in feed up to 6% of the total concentration does not affect consumption and digestibility of dry and organic matter, but able to maintain the quality of<br />local male sheep feed.</p>

The Fatyanovo Culture, together with its eastern twin, the Balanovo Culture, forms part of the pan-European Corded Ware Complex. Within that complex, it represents its eastern expansion to the catchment of the Upper and Middle Volga River in the European part of Russia. Its immediate roots are to be found in the southern Baltic States, Belarus, and northern Ukraine (the Baltic and Middle-Dnepr Corded Ware Cultures), from where moving people spread the culture further east along the river valleys of the forested flatlands. By doing so, they introduced animal husbandry to these regions. Fatyanovo Culture is predominately recognised through its material culture imbedded in its mortuary practices. Most aspects of every-day life remain unknown. The lack of an adequate absolute chronological framework has thus far prevented the verification of its internal cultural dynamics while overall interaction proposed also on typo-stratigraphical grounds suggests a contemporaneity with other representations of the Corded Ware Complex in Europe. Fatyanovo Culture is formed by the reverse movement to the (north-)east of the Corded Ware Complex, itself established in the aftermath of the westbound spread of Yamnaya populations from the steppes. It thus represents an important link between west and east, pastoralists and last hunter-gatherers, and the 3rd and the 2nd millennia bc. Through its descendants (including Abashevo, Sintashta, and Andronovo Cultures) it becomes a key component in the development of the wider cultural landscape of Bronze Age Eurasia.

Thousands of landslides occurred during the April 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal. Previous work using satellite imagery mapped nearly 25,000 coseismic landslides. In this study, the satellite-based mapping was analyzed in three areas where field deployment was also conducted—the Budhi Gandaki, Trishuli, and Indrawati river valleys—to better characterize the landslides. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were deployed to map the three-dimensional (3-D) geometry of failed slopes using photogrammetry, as well as to characterize rock structure and strength. The majority of landslides were rock slides along the ridges and the steeper portions of the basins primarily involving the weathered rock zone. Additional landslides included rock falls and soil failures. Satellite imagery analysis indicated that landsliding was concentrated north of the physiographic transition, in steep areas, and in close proximity to the major rivers. The Trishuli area experienced the lowest landslide density in terms of number of landslides compared to the Budhi Gandaki and Indrawati areas, although all three areas had similar density in terms of total landslide area and other landslide statistics.
