Aims of the study: To construct biomass weight equations for rockrose (Cistus laurifolius L.) shrublands in North-central Spain comparing different methodologies and evaluating the applicability of the current Spanish open PNOA-LiDAR data. Area of study: The growing extension of Mediterranean shrublands associated with a high wildfire risk in a climate change scenario is considered a relevant source of biomass for energy use and bioproducts. Quantifying the biomass load of the shrublands provides essential information for adequate management, calling for the development of equations to estimate said biomass loads in the most extensive monospecific shrublands. Materials and methods: Biomass dry weight from 290 destructive sampling plots (ø4m) and 426 individual plants along with LiDAR data from PNOA were related to dasometric parameters to fit weight per surface and weight per plant equations. Main results: Three new equations improve rockrose biomass estimations in North-central Spain: a) Weight per unit area (tDM.ha-1) equation (Eq. 1) based on apparent biovolume (product of crown cover in percentage by average height in meters) (Radj2 0.69, MAE 26.1%, RMSE 38.4%); b) Weight per plant (kgDM.plant-1) equation (Eq. 2) from height and crown diameter (Radj2 0.87, MAE 26.5%, RMSE 45.2%) and c) Weight per unit area equation (tDM.ha-1) (Eq. 3) based on LiDAR data contrasted with field data (Radj2 0.89, MAE 15.1%, RMSE 22.9%). Research highlights: Eq. 1 and Eq. 3 combined with high resolution LiDAR information offer rockrose (Cistus laurifolius L.) biomass estimations without added field work costs that are an improvement on certain more general studies carried out in other areas of Spain.

The Tabernas badlands in semiarid south-east Spain is one of the driest regions in Europe with a mean annual precipitation of c. 240 mm. The landscape is deeply dissected, with canyons, ramblas and sparsely vegetated eroded badland slopes. The vegetation is predominantly a biological soil crust consisting of different types of lichen-rich communities, one of the more conspicuous being dominated by Diploschistes diacapsis (Ach.) Lumbsch. This lichen is mainly restricted to the north- facing slopes, where it forms extensive whitish carpets and probably plays an important role in preventing erosion of the slopes and allowing plant colonization. South-facing slopes are much more eroded and generally lack vegetation. %The photosynthetic performance of north (shade) and south-facing (sun) populations of D. diacapsis was studied to determine if these different populations showed any adaptations to the microclimatic conditions of their individual habitats. The response of CO2 exchange to light intensity, temperature and water content was measured under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Dry weight-based net photosynthetic rates were higher in the southern-exposed population but quantum efficiency, and light compensation points were similar. Thallus weight per unit area (LMA) was considerably higher for shade specimens but maximum water content and optimal water content were very similar and chlorophyll content on a dry weight basis was also similar. Chlorophyll content on an area basis was higher in the northern-exposed population and always much larger than those reported in other studies on the same species (up to 8 times larger) with the result that NP values on a chlorophyll basis were relatively low. The larger LMA meant that shade thalli stored more water per unit area which should ensure longer active periods than sun thalli. The results support a strategy pair of high NP and short active time versus low NP and long active time, both having been reported for other soil crust species. However, the visibly larger biomass of the shade D. diacapsis suggests that the lichen is at the limit of its adaptability in these habitats.

RESUMEN: El estudio del fonema /θs/ en muestras de habla recientes de la ciudad de Sevilla revelan la convivencia de sus variantes vernáculas divergentes (patrones de seseo, ceceo y jejeo) con realizaciones convergentes (escisión fonemática /s/ → [s] : /θ/ → [θ]). Esta última pauta pone de manifi esto la permeabilidad de rasgos de pronunciación procedentes del español centro-norteño, habitualmente asociado al modelo de prestigio lingüístico. En esta investigación se analizan estos procesos de variación a partir de los materiales de PRESEEA-Sevilla, recopilados entre los años 2009 y 2017. Concretamente, la alternancia de los alófonos se pone en relación con factores externos (nivel educativo, edad y sexo de los informantes de la muestra) y con factores internos (sonidos sibilantes en el entorno silábico cercano y tipo de sustantivo, común o propio). Los resultados revelan los cambios que se están produciendo actualmente en el habla de la capital hispalense, con un avance progresivo del patrón conservador /s/ → [s] : /θ/ → [θ], liderado especialmente por algunos sectores poblacionales como los hablantes con grado de instrucción alta y las mujeres. Por su parte, el tradicional patrón seseante pervive con fuerza entre los sujetos con nivel de estudios bajo, en estrecha lucha con la pauta convergente; el ceceo sigue percibiéndose como una norma minoritaria; y el jejeo queda reducido a casos esporádicos asociados a un número concreto de lexías. Se perciben diferentes grados de inseguridad, en tanto que es habitual que un mismo hablante combine, en distinta proporción, más de una variante en sus intervenciones. Por último, los factores internos no fueron especialmente determinantes, con cierta incidencia de la asimilación progresiva y, en algunos casos, del sustantivo propio.ABSTRACT: The study of the phoneme /θs/ in speaking samples recently taken in Seville reveals the coexistence between its divergent vernacular variants (seseo, ceceo and jejeo patterns) and the convergent realizations (phonemic division /s/ → [s] : /θ/ → [θ]). This aspect indicates a fl exible absorption of the pronunciation characteristics which come from north-central Spain, often associated with the linguistic standard. This investigation compiles a complete analysis of these variation processes included in PRESEEA-Seville corpus, collected between 2009 and 2017. Specifi cally, the alternation of the allophones depends on both extralinguistic factors, such as the informants’ educational level, age and gender; and linguistic parameters as is the case of sibilant sounds connecting with the nearby syllabus, or proper and common nouns. The results show how the spoken Spanish in Seville is constantly changing according to the conservatory patterns /s/ → [s]: /θ/ → [θ], which is led by certain population sectors such as high sociolects and women. As for, the seseo is highly used amongst low sociolects, counteracting with the convergent norm; the ceceo is still conceived as a minority rule; and the jejeo is scarcely associated to a particular number of words. A certain degree of insecurity is observed, in such a way that the same speaker combines, in different proportions, more than just one variant. Finally, the internal factors weren’t quite determinative, excepting the infl uence of the progressive assimilation, and, in some cases, of the proper noun.

<em><em>The study investigated determinants of marriage stability among married couples in North Central Nigeria. In order to carry out this study, four hypotheses were formulated. An instrument known as “Determinants of Marriage Stability Questionnair (DOMSQ)” was constructed by the researcher and used to collect information from the field. The instrument had content and facial validity and its reliability coefficient is 0.87. The investigator used eight research assistants to administer nine hundred and ninety copies of the questionnaire on the respondents in Kogi and Benue States. Nine hundred and eighty three copies were retrieved from the respondents indicating 99.3 percent return rate. The researcher collated the information got from the field work and the Z statistics was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that, there was no significant difference between male and female married couples in their identification of childlessness as determinant of marriage stability, there was no significant difference between married couples in the urban and rural areas in their identification of sexual satisfaction as determinant of marriage stability, there was no significant difference between old and young married couples in their identification of cultural background as determinant of marriage stability, there was no significant difference between married couples from Kogi and Benue States in their identification of communication as determinant of marriage stability. One of the recommendations is that couples who are faced with the problem of childlessness should seek medical assistance and also be positive about such outcome.</em></em>

The presence in Spain of the French congregations devoted to education comes determined by the political events that took place during the III Republic in the neighbouring country starting at the end of 19th century. Like many others, , clergymen from San Viator, a congregation founded by the French priest Luis Querbes and devoted to education since 1851, arrived in Spain in 1903 with the aim of finding refuge and continuing their educational work. After settling  at a first stage in the city of Vitoria (Basque Country, Spain), they soon developed a program of foundations in the nearby surroundings which culminated with their establishment of a centre in Asturias (north-central Spain). With the approval of the diocese and the parish, they opened their first school in 1912, in the Asturian village of Cangas de Onís, which was soon followed by other twin foundations in Ribadesella and Infiesto. Our article undertakes to review their presence in the area - largely  ignored today in the school scene of our region - by analysing those pedagogic principles which inspired their dedication to the school, their educational offer and their capacity for innovating and adapting to the interests of an industrial society aspiring to secure a top-class education for their pupils. For this commitment they used, among other things the regional press as an advertising resource that was able to guarantee them the prestige attained in the region along their educational journey.

The profile of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) was quantified to determine sugar and starch relationships of megagametophyte tissue during Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill seed ontogeny. Field work occurred in northern Guam where megastrobili were marked and dated as they emerged from stem apices of plants in a natural population. Seeds were harvested beginning 6 months after megastrobili emergence and continuing until 28 months, and gametophyte tissue was separated from the remainder of each seed. Carbohydrates within lyophilized gametophyte tissue were quantified by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The levels of glucose and fructose declined from a high at 6 months to a homeostasis at 11 months, and the levels of sucrose similarly declined from 6 months to a homeostasis at ≈14 months. Starch content exceeded sugar content and increased from 6 months to reach a homeostasis at ≈18 months. Maltose was not detected in any sample. Stoichiometric quotients changed dramatically until ≈14 months, when they became fairly stable until 28 months. Starch concentration was ≈5-fold greater than sugar concentration at 6 months, and increased to ≈15-fold greater than sugar concentration by 28 months. Total NSC in mature megagametophytes was almost 70% on a dry weight basis. Our results are in agreement with the biological function of this haploid tissue, as copious carbohydrate resources are readily available to support embryo and seedling growth.

Abstract Age is an under-analyzed variable in linguistic research concerning gender and sexuality. We consider these three constructs by examining diminutives as an index of gay sexuality in Madrid Spanish across two tasks. Although phonetic cues have received great attention, morphological features (e.g. diminutives) may also index gayness (Mendes 2014). Moreover, despite frequent usage across Spanish-speaking varieties, diminutives are primarily restricted to women and children in north-central Spain (Haensch 2002). In a diminutive reaction task, 53 Madrid residents indicated whether men, women, adults, or children were likely to have uttered diminutivized sentences. Mixed-effects models indicated that the number of diminutives and sentence theme significantly affected perception, and participants’ evaluations in a free response task corroborated that men using diminutives were considered effeminate, gay, and childish. Thus, even with sociophonetic cues removed, morphological phenomena create a gay percept. This study demonstrates how age ideologies inform indexicalization processes related to gender and sexuality.

SUMMARYThe productivity of each component of a sorghum/groundnut intercrop and its constituent sole crops is determined in terms of a ‘Crop Performance Ratio’ (CPR) defined as the productivity of an intercrop per unit area of ground compared with that expected from sole crops sown in the same proportions. The CPR allows productivity, intercepted radiation and seasonal transpiration to be compared so that conversion coefficients for radiation (e; g MJ−1) and dry matter/water ratios (q; g kg−1) can be calculated for each intercrop component and its constituent sole crops. In this experiment, CPR for total dry weight in the intercrop was 1.08 and that for reproductive yield was 1.27. These advantages in overall productivity and yield were typical of those reported elsewhere for sorghum/groundnut intercrops. The proportional increase in total dry matter in the intercrop was largely a result of its greater interception of radiation. The further advantage in reproductive yield was a consequence of an improved harvest index in the sorghum component of the intercrop (0.64) compared with that of its sole crop counterpart (0.55).

Great bustard (Otis tarda) populations in Spain are located mostly in cultivated areas during winter. The birds concentrate in large flocks and feed on cultivated plants. This paper reports two types of bustard-caused damage which occur in cereal, lucerne and vetch crops in west-central Spain, as a result of grazing and other bird activities such as display. Field work was carried out between 1994 and 1995. Damage to cereal crops was caused during germination and early seedling growth or to young plants, although plants were able to recover from this by regrowth and the overall yield was not reduced. Vetch crops were damaged in localized areas, but these recovered and were useful for forage enrichment or as grain. However, the damage to lucerne plots, although local, was extensive, resulting in yield losses of 23–31% with respect to the total production.

Field studies were conducted to determine the effects of various barnyardgrass populations on growth, yield, and nutrient concentration of transplanted “Jetstar’ tomato. Barnyardgrass densities at 16, 32, and 64 plants/m tomato row were tested in 1982 and 1983. Barnyardgrass shoot fresh weights/unit area increased as density increased. Fresh weight of barnyardgrass shoots ranged from 17 100 kg/ha at 16 plants/m of row to 35 500 kg/ha at 64 plants/m of row. At the vegetative stage, tomato shoot dry weight was unaffected by barnyardgrass. As crop growth progressed, tomato shoot dry weight decreased at all barnyardgrass densities. Season-long interference of barnyardgrass reduced marketable tomato fruit number and fruit weight at all densities compared to weed-free plots. Reductions in marketable fruit weight ranged from 26% to 16 plants/m row to 84% at 64 plants/m row. In 1982, concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg in tomato shoots were unaffected by season-long interference of barnyardgrass at all densities. However, in 1983, concentrations of N and K decreased and concentration of P increased in tomato leaves as the density of barnyardgrass increased. Concentrations of Ca and Mg in tomato leaves were unaltered by barnyardgrass density.
