The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the 2013 Zagreb Declaration on Person-centered Education and Training and to provide additional information on the action point areas identified during the Declaration’s development process. It is a living document and further suggestions for refinement at our annual Geneva Conferences are welcome. The current health profession educational system, including educators and professional role models, is dominated by professionals trained and practiced in a biomedical system of care focused on the diseases of individuals. There is less emphasis on their personal values and choices within a holistic care paradigm. There is a need for reorienting the education of medical and other health professionals towards person centered approach.Main areas of action include: enhancement of the conceptual bases of professional training and public education; analysis and optimization of the organization and culture of educational institutions; selection of educators and students who are suited to the goals and responsibilities required of health professionals; and promoting curricular developments that have person-centered guiding principles’.

The failures of health professional education are multi-faceted. The governance issues described by de Leeuw represent ‘the tip of the iceberg’ of the problems. Other, probably more important issues, are the loss of the ‘core values’ underpinning the healing professions, and a scientism-based approach to practice based on a naive view of evidence that fails to register ‘one’s delusion of certainty’. The selection of students lacking humanistic trades perpetuates the demise of the healing (meaning making whole again of all of the dis-ease domains) professions. The change required to achieve ‘balanced’ health professionals that treat the human condition of dis-ease with the scientific advances of managing disease is a change in core values and a selection of patient-centred role models. An example shows how patients can ultimately be our best allies in achieving these ‘long-overdue’ changes.

Abstract Background Addressing health inequalities is a crucial public health issue. It is thus imperative that health professionals are equipped with explicit competences to recognise and address health inequalities. Methods This is a multi-phase mixed-methods study exploring health inequalities and training within professional health curricula at the University of Malta. Phase One consists of a scoping study which explores whether and how health inequalities feature within the health professions' undergraduate curricula. This involved a systematic search of undergraduate health professional curricula, including competency profiles in each programme of study, using information available in the public domain. Academic year reviewed was 2019-2020. To ensure harmonisation, the two independent reviewers used the following search strategy: a) using a keyword descriptive approach (MeSH terms divided into two levels: direct, level one, and more general keywords, level two) and b) a more subjective approach to assess wider topic elements. Results Preliminary results emanating from mapping of 19 different programmes of study will be presented. A wide range of occurrences, from zero occurrences in some programmes to a maximum of one occurrence for level one and 12 for level two keywords in other programmes, was observed. Conclusions There is a wide disparity between the awareness of and training of inequalities across different professional training programmes. This provides the groundwork for Phase Two of this research during which public health stakeholders' attitudes and perceptions on health professional training and current practices will be explored. Findings from this study will provide the evidence and the impetus for possible interdisciplinary modules and/or continuous professional development programmes in health inequalities. Key messages The need for developing short courses/reviewing health curricula to incorporate health inequalities is encouraged. Public health professionals have a responsibility to address health inequalities in their professional practice.

In the modern world of higher educational institutions, the problem of organizing students' independent work is one of the most urgent. The student must have not only knowledge, but also make decisions independently, strive for success in professional activities, apply a creative approach to any business, and raise the intellectual level. That is why the independent work presupposes the development of students' skills to clearly formulate their own thoughts, argue their judgments, think logically, and know the numerous flow of information. The implementation of these skills is possible when organizing a competence-based students' individual work , which affects the professional sphere of future specialists And the construction of a competence-oriented SIW in the form of a model that includes motivational, performance, reflexive, control stages is based on: a) the inherent value of the student; b) the conditionality of the professional orientation of the content of education by future teaching activities; c) c) orientation of professional education towards the individual experience of the student; d) the advanced nature of professional training; e) correlation of the technology of professional training with the patterns of professional becoming of the teacher's personality.
