Herbal medicines have played a vital role in the evolution of humanity and civilization. The fruits of the plant Zanthoxylum were collected from the study field, washed, dried in the shade and powdered. Soxhlation method was used to make different solvent extract of fruit. The different fruit extracts were examined against P. aeruginosa, P. syringe, S. aureus, S. typhi, K. pneumonia and E. coli by agar well diffusion method and for the detection of biochemical components present in the Zanthoxylum fruit, methanolic fruit extract was analyzed using GC-MS. Results showed that, the methanolic extract of fruit is found to be exhibit activity against P. aeruginosa, P. syringe, S. aureus, S. typhi, K. pneumonia and E. coli when compared to the hexane and ethyl acetate. The discovery of 46 bioactive compounds in methanolic fruit extract was verified by their molecular formula, molecular weight, and area peak percentage. In which 6 bioactive compounds such as 6-octadecanoic acid, Pentadecanoic acid, Ethyl oleate, 9-octadecenoic acid (Z)-, methyl ester, Glycerin and 1, 2-dimethoxy-4-(2-methoxyethenyl) benzene compounds showed highest peak area percentage of 26.14, 13.61, 8.56, 6.12 and 6.08% respectively. The compounds found in this research may be responsible for some of the medicinal action of the Z. ovalifolium fruit and may be useful in the development of new medicines.

Dillenia serrata Thunb.is a member of the Dillenia clan which is endemic to Sulawesi. D. serrata fruit is a seasonal fruit and can be used as a cooking ingredient as a sour taste, raw material for several food products such as candied fruit and syrup, and has the potential to be processed into chips and jam. Traditionally, the leaves and bark of D. serrata are also used by the local community as a sprue medicine, fever, wound medicine, treating swelling or inflammation and treating vomiting of blood. It is believed that there are still many untapped benefits from this plant. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of D. serrata fruit extract as an antimicrobial that causes disease in humans, and to determine its effectiveness as an antioxidant. The antioxidant test was carried out using the DPPH method while the antimicrobial test was carried out by the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer). The ripe Dillenia fruit was extracted using methanol, the extract was then diluted in various concentrations for the DPPH test The results showed that the D. serrata extract had the ability as an antioxidant. The antioxidant activity of fresh fruit extracts was higher than that of dried fruit extracts. D. serrata extract is effective in inhibiting the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans bacteria.

Objective: Antibacterial effects of Cranberry fruit extract on Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Extended Spectrum beta lactamase producing E. coli and its comparison with Linezolid and Meropenem. Materials and Methods: It is a Pre Clinical (in-vitro) study conducted in Ziauddin University from January 2020 to October 2020. All samples were collected from Ziauddin University.  All clinical samples were collected inform of pus, urine, blood, tracheal aspirations, patients admitted in surgical and medical wards, intensive care units and outdoor patients who were attending clinics. All these samples were transported to Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, Ziauddin hospital, North Nazimabad campus and then culture and sensitivity test were performed there. Sample showing double growth and contamination on agar plates were excluded from study. Results: Out of 80 samples included in this study 46(57.5%) were female and 34(42.5%) samples were male; female to male samples ratio of 1.35:1.The mean age was 45.71±11.83 years. MRSA commonly found in pus swab 15(37.5%) and 21(52.5%) ESBL producing E. coli found in urine samples. 14(35%) samples were observed anti-bacterial activity of cranberry fruit extracts against Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase Producing Escherichia coli at 50 mg/ml concentration, followed by 10(25%) and 9(22.5%) samples at  60 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml were respectively. While resistance of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase Producing Escherichia coliwere observed high at different concentration level of cranberry fruit extracts. Good anti-bacterial activity of cranberry fruit extracts observed  against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus at different                      levels of concentration 20(50%), 23(57.5%), 21(52.5%), 26(65%), 29(72.5%) samples were 20 mg/ml,30mg/ml,40mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 60mg/ml respectively. Most superior and best dose of cranberry fruit extract against Staph Aureus in about 72.5% (29) at 60mg/ml and their Comparison with linezolid and meropenem against Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and found best positive results as compared with Linezolid and found significant p value 0.005. Conclusions: Cranberry extract has a lot of potential to prove itself to be a good antimicrobial agent. The cranberry fruit extract has high antimicrobial activity against methicillin resistant S.aureus and resistant strains of E. coli in comparison to linezolid and meropenem.

Zanthoxylum alatum (Z. alatum), an important medicinal plant is used for various ailments including chest infection, cough, cholera, fever, stomach disorders, gas problems, indigestion, piles, toothache, gum problems, dyspepsia and stomachic worldwide. Keeping in view the medicinal potential of this plant, fruit and leaves methanolic (MeOH) extracts were prepared, evaluated for antioxidant activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and for antibacterial potential by well diffusion and macrodilution methods in-vitro. Our results confirmed that Z. alatum fruit and leaves extracts have significant antioxidant activity with IC50 values 0.28 ± 0.07 mg/ml and 0.34 ± 0.05 mg/ml, respectively. The inhibitory trend at highest tested concentration (120 mg/ml) at 24 hr incubation in well diffusion method was recorded as 0.39, 0.30, 0.28, 0.27 and 0.18 cm against S. pyogenes, B. cereus, E. coli, S. aureus and S. enterica for leaf extract, respectively. In case of fruit extract inhibitory trend at highest tested concentration was observed as 0.33, 0.32, 0.31, 0.30 and 0.28 cm against S. aureus, S. enterica, S. pyogenes, B. cereus and E. coli, respectively. The fruit extract showed higher zones of inhibition than leaves extracts against all the test bacteria except S. pyogenes. Moreover, highest zones of inhibition were observed at lowest incubation (24 hr) and lowest zones were observed at highest incubation period (72 hr) for all tested concentrations. Macrodilution method showed antibacterial susceptibility in liquid medium with different levels of IC50 values ranging from 1.6±0.13 mg/ml to 10.3±0.7 5mg/ml. Interestingly, none of the tested bacteria showed resistance against any of the test extract in well diffusion or macrodilution method expressing the Z. alatum as potent candidates to kill bacteria in semisolid or in liquid medium to fulfill medical needs in future.

Background: Emerging resistant Candida species become a severe problem for public health. The study aims to examine the efficacy of Terminalia subspathulata bark and fruit extracts as an alternative source of antifungals for resistant strains of Candida species. Methodology: Candida albicans was isolated between 4–5th interdigital foot space and C. parapsilosis were isolated from the left-hand third finger of male patients. Morphological and molecular methods identified the isolates. Antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) was determined using azole derivatives, amphotericin B (AmpB) and echinocandins based on E-test and broth microdilution (BMD) methods. The AFST activity of the 10 μL methanolic extracts with concentrations between 1.25–10 mg/mL was assessed by disk diffusion method according to CLSI guidelines. Results: The AFST results showed total resistance to all azoles (FLU, MIC ≥ 256 μg/ml and VOR, ITR and POS each with MIC ≥ 32 μg/ml). The BMD method agreed with E-test MICs. The T. subspathulata bark extract tested indicated activity on the C. albicans lawn with the zone of inhibition between 9–13 mm. The fruit extract indicated zone between 8–10 mm. Candida parapsilosis indicated susceptibility to bark extract with the zone of inhibition between 10–15 mm, while the fruit extract showed zone between 8–13 mm. Conclusion: Despite azole resistance, the extracts showed good activity against the isolates. Findings showed alternatives to AmpB and echinocandins because of toxicity and parenteral administration, respectively. Based on our findings, our study first reports the medicinal value of T. subspathulata.

The Trichoderma asperellum MT02 has been reported to has antibacterial activity against the Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL) E. coli based on the screening results through an agar plug method. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of T. asperellum MT02 and characterize the composition of the bioactive compounds group possessed in its crude extract. The isolate was cultured in the Malt Extract Broth (MEB) media (static, 27 oC, 15 days). The intracellular metabolites from mycelium were extracted using methanol while extracellular metabolites from broth media were extracted using ethyl acetate. The antibacterial activity of crude extracts was tested using the paper disc diffusion method while bioactive compounds were characterized using the phytochemical method. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of the broth media extract performed a greater activity than the crude extract from the mycelium. The crude extract from mycelia only contained flavonoid and phenol hydroquinone compounds while the crude extract from broth media contains alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols hydroquinone and saponins. Kapang Trichoderma asperellum MT02 telah dilaporkan memiliki potensi sebagai penghasil senyawa antibakteri melawan Extended Spectrum β-Lactamase (ESBL) E. coli berdasarkan hasil penapisan melalui metode agar plug. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak kasar kapang T. asperellum MT02 serta komposisi golongan senyawa bioaktif yang dimiliki. Kapang dikultur pada media Malt Extract Broth (MEB) (statis, 27 oC, 15 hari) di mana metabolit intraseluler dari miselium diekstrak menggunakan metanol sedangkan metabolit ekstraseluler dari media kaldu diekstrak menggunakan etil asetat. Aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak kasar diuji menggunakan metode difusi kertas cakram sedangkan senyawa bioaktif dikarakterisasi menggunakan metode fitokimia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas antibakteri asal ekstrak media kaldu lebih baik dibandingkan ekstrak kasar asal miselium kapang. Ekstrak kasar kapang asal miselia hanya mengandung senyawa golongan flavonoid dan fenol hidrokuinon sedangkan ekstrak kasar asal media kaldu mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, fenol hidroquinon dan saponin.

Objectives: Dichapetalum gelonioides (Roxb.) Engl. belongs to the family Dichapetalaceae. In the present study, we investigated antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of leaf and fruit of D. gelonioides. Methods: Maceration process was carried out for extraction of leaf and fruit of D. gelonioides. Agar well diffusion method was employed to evaluate antibacterial activity of extracts against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Poisoned food technique was performed to investigate antifungal activity of extracts against two seed-borne fungi. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH radical scavenging and ferric reducing assays.  Results: Both leaf and fruit extracts were effective in causing inhibition of all test bacteria. Highest and least inhibitory activity was observed against Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli respectively. Both Aspergillus niger and Bipolaris sp. were inhibited to >50% by leaf and fruit extracts. Extent of inhibition of Bipolaris sp. was slightly higher when compared to A. niger. Both leaf and fruit extracts showed a dose dependent scavenging of DPPH radicals with high activity being showed by leaf extract. Leaf extract was shown to exhibit marked reducing potential than fruit extract. Conclusions: Overall, leaf extract was shown to be more effective in displaying antioxidant activity and causing inhibition of bacteria and fungi when compared to fruit extract. The results indicate that the plant possess active principles which are to be purified, characterized and subjected for antimicrobial and antioxidant assays in further studies. Fruit extracts of the Chaenomeles species are a rich source of compounds having health-promoting properties, while their distribution between the species and cultivars varies significantly depending on both genotype and environmental threats. This study aimed at discovering antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the secondary metabolites of fruit and waxes of fruit cuticular of introduced Ch. cathayensis and Ch. × californica plants. The sum of detected polyphenols in the isopropanolic fruit extracts varied slightly between the species, while significant excesses in indices were seen for both species peel extracts as compared to pulp extracts. Antimicrobial assays carried out by disc diffusion method showed notable activity of the fruit peel and pulp extracts of both species against all tested Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains, and two Candida strains as well. Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was the most resistant to the action of both fruit extracts, especially peel extracts of Ch. cathayensis fruits. As identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) assays, chloroformic extracts from the fruits of cuticular waxes of Ch. cathayensis and Ch. × californica contained six prevailing fractions: aldehydes, alkanes, alcohols, esters, fatty acids and various terpenoids. The predominant compounds were tetrapentacontane (21.8% of total amount) and heptacosanal (23.1% of total), respectively in the cuticular waxes of Ch. cathayensis and Ch. × californica. Cinnamaldehyde, cis-9-hexadecenal, hexadecanoic acid, oleic acid, olean-12-ene-3,28-diol (3. beta), lupeol, diisooctyl phthalate, 9-octadecenoic acid, 1,2,3-propanetriyl ester, 1,3,12-nonadecatriene-5,14-diol and some other identified compounds are well-known for their bioactivity, indicating the feasibility of studying the antimicrobial potential of plant fruits.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles have been biosynthesized with the help of Neolamarckia cadamba leaf and fruit extracts. ZnO nanoparticles were tested for antibacterial activity before and after calcination against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) as well as Gram negative micro-organisms (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) within the concentration range 0.625–10 mg/mL with the help of well diffusion technique. Higher antibacterial potential has been observed in ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using leaf extract in comparison with those synthesized using fruit extract. Increased antibacterial activity was observed before calcination as compared to after calcination. ZnO synthesized using leaf extract were observed to show significant antibacterial potential against E. coli, S. aureus along with P. aeruginosa before calcination as well as against E. coli after calcination. Similarly, ZnO nanoparticles synthesized using fruit extract exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa before calcination and against E. coli after calcination. Both the ZnO nanoparticles before and after calcination did not show any antibacterial activity against B. subtilis. Thus, ZnO nanoparticles can serve a dual purpose by its application as an antibacterial agent against susceptible micro-organisms as well as biocompatible carrier system for drug delivery applications in case of non-antibacterial properties by virtue of its inertness as well as easy disposal.

Among the extracts analyzed ethanol and acetone extracts showed promising results. Theacetone fruit extract showedmaximum inhibition against Gram positive bacterialstrains(Staphylococcusaureus,12.5mm;Bacillussubtilis,12mm).Phytochemical tests carried out showed that the antimicrobial activityofplant Terminaliachebulafruit may be due to the presence of phytochemical compounds present in it.

The present study was designed to estimate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of ethanolic and aqueous extract of Borassus flabellifer fruit, juice, leaves and sap. The antioxidant evaluation was carried out by various radical scavenging assays and antimicrobial activity by the disk diffusion method. For antibacterial activity, bacterial species such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were tested for all extracts. The extract showed moderate antioxidant activity when compared to the standard vitamin C. In both DPPH and nitric oxide oxide assay when related IC 50 value, ethanolic fruit extract showed promising results of 132 and 119  µg/mL respectively with ascorbic acid as standard which showed 25 and 35 µg/mL respectively. In Ferric Thiocyanate (FTC) Method and Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA) Method the radical scavenging activity of ethanolic fruit extract showed satisfactory results of 160 and 148 µg/mL ascorbic acid being the standard which showed 94 and 97 µg/mL respectively. The total flavonoid contents were 32.7 /100g for ethanolic sap extracts and 53.9/100g in aqueous extract of sap. The fruit juice extract showed maximum inhibition zone with 31.4 and 32.1 mm against E. coli and S.aureus correlated other extracts .Ethanolic and aqueous sap extracts zone of inhibition was 25.2 and 26.8 against E. coli and zone of inhibition was 28.3 against S.aureus in both ethanolic and aqueous sap. Ethanolic and aqueous leaves extracts zone of inhibition was 28.5 and 24.1 against E. coli. Ethanolic and aqueous leaves extracts zone of inhibition was 30.4 and 25.8 against S.aureus. Herein, the results suggest that the Borassus flabellifer plant extracts have potential antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
