Abstract Children made up a substantial segment of the literate public that emerged during the Arab nahḍah period. Of these, an apparent minority applied skills they acquired in school to reading for pleasure or satisfying juvenile curiosity. This study explores the novel practice of Arab youth leisure-time reading as reported in retrospective memories and autobiographies. It reveals that during the nahḍah’s early decades, the inventory of Arabic readings fit for children was strikingly limited—unlike the multitude of books that were available to adults—a reality that forced curious boys and girls from different classes to make do with adult books for their after-school reading. This article examines cultural factors for that scarcity (primarily the status of children in society) and economic ones (e.g., publishers’ business concerns) and considers its implications. Probing a seemingly marginal section of a wider scene, it sheds light on hitherto neglected facets of the Arab transition from widespread illiteracy to extensive literacy at this point in history.

The article examines the impact of training sessions on the combat army system (BARS) on the formation of physical readiness of future officers for professional combat activities in the process of training in a military institute of higher education. Cadets of 2-3 courses (n=62) of S.P. Koroliov Zhytomyr Military Institute took part in the research. Two groups were formed: experimental (EG, n=32), whose cadets studied in the section of the institute on the combat army system, and control (CG, n=30), whose cadets studied under the current system of physical training in military institute. It was found that the level of development of physical qualities and the formation of military-applied skills in cadets who studied in the section BARS, at the end of the study is significantly higher than those who were engaged in physical training during sports and mass work. The most pronounced effect of BARS classes was found on the development of strength qualities, strength (static) endurance, as well as on the formation of professional military-applied skills in overcoming obstacles.

Military-applied sports are effective means of physical, moral and psychological training of servicemen for combat activities. A single universal program for training cadets by means of military pentathlon is not described in the special literature. The goal is to summarize the experience of building the training process in military all-around in military universities. 40 coaches of national teams in military pentathlon of 7 universities of Ukraine were surveyed. Results. Physical training of cadets by means of military pentathlon contributes to the formation of their professionalism - it improves applied skills, physical and functional readiness for combat operations. Sports result in military pentathlon to the greatest extent depends on the level of development of athletes' aerobic and speed-power endurance, as well as speed-power qualities. Most often, an obstacle course and throwing are combined in one workout. Regardless of the training period, most of the time is devoted to cross training. Conclusions. The opinions of the coaches on the key issues of building the training process differ significantly, which means that there is no single training methodology for military pentathletes in the universities of Ukraine. Research on the establishment of a scientifically grounded ratio of training volumes of military pentathletes is urgent.
