Malaria remains a significant cause of death in tropical and subtropical regions by serious complications with hematological abnormalities consistent with high parasitemia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the efficacy of the Gymnema inodorum leaf extract (GIE) on hematological alteration in Plasmodium berghei infection in mice. Groups of ICR mice were infected intraperitoneally with parasitized red blood cells of P. berghei ANKA (PbANKA). They were administered orally by gavage of 100, 250, and 500 mg/kg of GIE for 4 consecutive days. Healthy and untreated groups were given distilled water, while 10 mg/kg of chloroquine was treated as the positive control. Hematological parameters including RBC count, hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), RBC distribution width (RDW), white blood cell (WBC) count, and WBC differential count were measured. The results showed that significant decreases of RBC count, Hb, Hct, MCV, MCH, MCHC, and reticulocytes were observed in the untreated group, while RDW was significantly increased compared with the healthy control. Furthermore, the WBC, neutrophil, monocyte, basophil, and eosinophil of untreated mice increased significantly, while the lymphocyte was significantly decreased compared with the healthy control. Interestingly, GIE normalized the hematological alteration induced by PbANKA infection in GIE-treated groups compared with healthy and untreated groups. The highest efficacy of GIE was observed at a dose of 500 mg/kg. Our results confirmed that GIE presented the potential role in the treatment of hematological alteration during malaria infection.

This study investigated the effect of ethanol stem bark extract of Irvingia gabonensis (ESEIG) on sodium arsenite (SA)-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines and hematological perturbations in Wistar rats. Fifty-five Wistar rats weighing 100 g - 179 g were distributed into eleven groups (n=5). Group 1 had feed and water only. Group 2 received 4.1 mg/kg body weight (kgbw) of SA. Groups 3-11 received SA and/or ESEIG. Treatment was done orally for 14 days. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-4 (IL-4) concentrations, hemoglobin (HB) concentration, red blood cell (RBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), white blood cell (WBC) count and its differentials and platelet (PLT) count were used to investigate the immunological and hematological effects of ESEIG. Exposure to SA produced significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in hepatic IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-10 and IL-4 concentrations relative to control. Administration of SA also caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) decreases in HB, RBC, PCV, MCHC, MCH, MCV and PLT and significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in WBC, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and neutrophils compared with control. Treatment with ESEIG concomitantly and 2 weeks after SA exposure, mitigated the deleterious effect of SA. However, ESEIG alone at various doses caused significant (p ˂ 0.05) increases in some of the assayed parameters, compared with control. These results imply that ESEIG may be protective against SA-induced inflammation and hematological derangements in Wistar rats. Its exclusive administration on chronic basis may also be slightly toxic.

Different studies proved that exposure over prolonged periods to pesticides increase the likelihood of developing adverse effects. 2,2-dichlorovinyl dimethyl phosphate (DDVP) is a predominant pesticide used in controlling insects. Therefore this study was aimed to investigate the age related changes in hematological indices of animals exposed to DDVP. Thirty healthy male Wistar rats were used in this study. Animals were grouped into three major groups of ten animals each. Group one animals served as young group (5 - 6 weeks) while group two and three was the middle-aged (2 months) and old groups (3-4 months) respectively. All the groups were subdivided into control and DDVP group with five animals in each subgroup. The DDVP groups were exposed to DDVP for five weeks. At the end of fifth week, they were euthanized with blood collected through cardiac puncture, hematological indices were analysed with autohematological analyzer.Exposure to DDVP significantly increased white blood cell counts and basophiles in old group. Platelets count and plateletcrit (PCT) were significantly decreased in young animals that were exposed to DDVP while platelet distribution width (PDW) and Mean platelets volume (MPV) were not significantly different across the groups. Red blood cells count, Hematocrit, Hemoglobin concentration, Mean cell volume, Mean cell hemoglobin and Mean cell hemoglobin concentration also show no significant difference across groups. Exposure of Wistar rats to Dichlorvos has no impact on haematological parameters in middle agerats. However, dichlorvos affects young and old animals proving age dependent effect of DDVP on hematological parameters. Keywords: DDVP, hematology, white blood cells, platelet, age

The clinical feature of EM is an erosive-ulcerative lesion with a tendency of bleeding. Decreasing erythrocyte quality can affect its healing process, although able to be overcome by fulfilling the micronutrient intake. The purpose of this case report was to describe the results of micronutrient supplementation therapy given in the management of EM patients with decreasing erythrocyte quality. Case report: A 21-year-old woman complained of lip bleeding and oral thrush, which felt pain three weeks prior. A similar complaint history had been experienced in the previous seven years. Extraoral examination revealed haemorrhagic crusting on the lips, whereas intraoral examination showed multiple ulcerations of almost the entire oral mucosa. Laboratory examination results showed a decreasing erythrocyte quality based on the parameters of Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Mean Cell Haemoglobin (MCH), and Mean Cell Haemoglobin Concentration (MCHC); an increasing number of erythrocytes and eosinophils in the upper borderline, as well as non-reactive anti-HSV-I IgG. The patient was diagnosed with erythema multiforme with a history of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Pharmacological management was performed by given folic acid and vitamin B12 as micronutrient supplementation. Also, given a 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouth rinse as an antiseptic and petroleum jelly for lip balm. The patient’s oral lesions resolved after two weeks of therapy. Conclusion: Micronutrient supplementation plays an essential role in accelerating the oral mucosal lesions healing in erythema multiforme patients with decreasing erythrocyte quality. Micronutrients in folic acid and vitamin B12 play an important role in erythrocyte DNA synthesis, cell division, and tissue repair. Keywords: Micronutrient, erythema multiforme, erythrocyte quality.

Iron deficiency has become a common nutritional problem of developing countries, especially in children. This study approached to tackle the issue of iron deficiency by inexpensive fortified food such as chewing gums, which is commonly consumed by children. In this study, iron-fortified chewing gums were prepared by adding ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sodium iron EDTA (NaFeEDTA) 30 mg/100 g. An efficacy trial was conducted to determine the impact of iron-fortified chewing gums on the blood profile and iron status of school-going children (n = 300). Results showed maximum increase in blood profile and iron status that is, serum ferritin (10.43%), hemoglobin (3.22%), hematocrit (3.42%), red blood cells (3.05%), mean cell volume (1.55%), mean cell hemoglobin (5.43%), total white blood cells count (9.09%), and platelets count (4.40%) as compared with control whereas decrease in mean cell hemoglobin concentration (1.90%) and neutrophils (3.33%) was also observed. The study concluded that FeSO4 and NaFeEDTA (1:1) fortification of chewing gums is an appropriate approach for mitigating iron deficiency among the target population.

The usage period of seed-bulls, their sexual activity, the amount and quality of semen obtained from them depend both on the individual characteristics of the animal organ-ism and numerous environmental factors. The diet should contain all the necessary organic substances: easily digest-ible carbohydrates (starch and sugar), lipids, minerals and vitamins. The lack or deficiency of macro-and trace ele-ments in the diet and inadequate ratio of individual mineral elements disrupts the processes of nutrient intake into the animal body, thereby contributing to the disruption of meta-bolic processes. However, the mineral composition of plant forages depends largely on soil and climatic conditions, production and storage techniques. The average trace element deficiency in energy-balanced diets is 30-50%, and that necessitates using mineral supplements in animal diets. The nature of changes occurring in an animal body when feeding new forages, feed supplements, biological growth promoters and other products should and may be controlled through the main blood values. The research goal was to study the blood morphological composition of Black Pied seed bulls when using a mineral supplement based on maral antler press-cake. The experimental stud-ies were carried out in the breeding company AO “Plempredpriyatiye Barnaulskoye”, the Altai Region, in 2021, in the control and trial groups of comparable Black Pied seed bulls used on the farms of the Altai Region. Along with the basic diet, the seed bulls of the trial group received the mineral supplement based on maral antler press-cake; the daily dose -15.0 g per head, for 30 days with 10 days’ interval aftereach application. The supple-ment was mixed with compound feed before feeding. The mineral supplement was made at the Federal Altai Scien-tific Center of Agro-Biotechnologiesafter fermentation and autoclaving of maral antler press-cake; a significant amount of biologically active substances was found in ant-ler press-cake. The morphological status of the blood of seed bulls when using the mineral supplement made from maral antlers was characterized by a higher counts of erythrocytes, hemoglobin and leukocytes by 8.8%, 8.31% and 3.6%, higher values of hematocrit volume, mean cell hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean cell hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) by 9.78%, 0.3%, 1.8% and 1.4%, respectively, as compared to those blood indices of the control group animals; that was indica-tive of its hematopoietic effect.

This study is design to ascertain the hematological status in albino mice treated with Justicia carnea leave, which could aid in the treatment of anemia. The hematological parameters investigated include Mean Cell Volume (MCV), Mean Cell Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Cell Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC), Platelets (PLTS), Hemoglobin (Hb), Red Blood Cells (RBCs), Pack Cell Volume (PCV) and White Blood Cells (WBCs). Nine (9) male albino mice of approximately the same weight 300 g were grouped into 3 groups that’s Negative Control (NC) Positive Control (PC) and Test Control (TC), each made up of 3 mice. Negative control mice were given normal feed moisten with water,  Positive control received diluted iron folate with normal feed, finally Test control mice were  administered powdered leaves of Justicia carnea with normal feed for 7 days, after which blood samples were collected using EDTA tubes by exsanguination and run for hematological parameters using auto-hematological analyzer. The results of various groups were found to be; as there was a significant increase in RBCs, Hb, & PCV (P=0.05), between the groups. No significant change was observed on the MCV, MCH, and MCHC. Lymphocytosis was observed in all groups with mark difference in granulocytosis. TC had granulocytosis, NC showed normal granulocyte scores and the PC show granulocytopenia with a statistical difference of P=0.0017. A significant difference was seen in platelets between the groups P=0.02. This study shows that J. carnea leaves possess anti-anemic potential, lending credence to the use of these plant leaves in folk medicine for the management of hemolytic anemia would be helpful. Further research on the various phytochemicals of the plant should be done and also its toxicological aspects.
