Maternal nutrition during pregnancy has a significant influence in establishing patterns of metabolism and postnatal behaviours in offspring, and therefore shapes their risk of developing disorders in later life. Although it is well established that a mismatch between food consumption and energy expenditure leads to obesity and metabolic dysregulation, little research has investigated the biological origin of such behaviour. We conducted the present experiments to investigate effects of early-life nutrition on preference between wheel running and lever pressing for food during adult life. To address this issue we employed a well-established experimental approach in the rat which has shown that offspring of mothers undernourished during pregnancy develop obesity and metabolic disorders when kept under standard laboratory conditions. Using this experimental approach, two studies were conducted where offspring of ad libitum-fed dams and dams undernourished throughout pregnancy were given the choice between wheel running and pressing a response lever for food. Across subsequent conditions, the rate at which the response lever provided food was varied from 0·22 to 6·0 (study 1) and 0·19 to 3·0 (study 2) pellets per min. Compared with the control group, offspring from dams undernourished during pregnancy showed a consistently greater preference for running over lever pressing for food throughout both experiments of the study. The results of the present study provide experimental evidence that a mother's nutrition during pregnancy can result in a long-term shift in her offspring's lifestyle choices that are relevant to obesity prevention. Such a shift, if endorsed, will have substantial and wide-ranging health consequences throughout the lifespan.

Alterations in the environment during critical periods of development, including altered maternal nutrition, can increase the risk for the development of a range of metabolic, cardiovascular and reproductive disorders in offspring in adult life. Following the original epidemiological observations of David Barker that linked perturbed fetal growth to adult disease, a wide range of experimental animal models have provided empirical support for the developmental programming hypothesis. Although the mechanisms remain poorly defined, adipose tissue has been highlighted as playing a key role in the development of many disorders that manifest in later life. In particular, adipokines, including leptin and adiponectin, primarily secreted by adipose tissue, have now been shown to be important mediators of processes underpinning several phenotypic features associated with developmental programming including obesity, insulin sensitivity and reproductive disorders. Moreover, manipulation of adipokines in early life has provided for potential strategies to ameliorate or reverse the adverse sequalae that are associated with aberrant programming and provided insight into some of the mechanisms involved in the development of chronic disease across the lifecourse.

Exposure to either an increased or decreased level of intrauterine nutrition can result in an increase in adiposity and in circulating leptin concentrations in later life. In animals such as the sheep and pig in which fat is deposited before birth, leptin is synthesised in fetal adipose tissue and is present in the fetal circulation throughout late gestation. In the sheep a moderate increase or decrease in the level of maternal nutrition does not alter fetal plasma leptin concentrations, but there is evidence that chronic fetal hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia increase fetal fat mass and leptin synthesis within fetal fat depots. Importantly, there is a positive relationship between the relative mass of the ‘unilocular’ component of fetal perirenal and interscapular adipose tissue and circulating fetal leptin concentrations in the sheep. Thus, as in the neonate and adult, circulating leptin concentrations may be a signal of fat mass in fetal life. There is also evidence that leptin can act to regulate the lipid storage, leptin synthetic capacity and potential thermogenic functions of fat before birth. Thus, leptin may act as a signal of energy supply and have a ‘lipostatic’ role before birth. Future studies are clearly required to determine whether the intrauterine and early postnatal nutrient environment programme the endocrine feedback loop between adipose tissue and the central and peripheral neuroendocrine systems that regulate energy balance, resulting in an enhanced risk of obesity in adult life.

Animal models are widely used for studying diabetes in translational research. However, methods for induction of diabetes are conflicting with regards to their efficacy, reproducibility and cost. A comparison of outcomes between the diabetic models is still unknown, especially full-term pregnancy.To understand the comparison, we analyzed the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes at three life-different moments during the neonatal period in Sprague–Dawley female rats: at the first (D1), second (D2) and fifth (D5) day of postnatal life. At adulthood (90 days; D90), the animals were submitted to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for diabetic status confirmation. The diabetic and control rats were mated and sacrificed at full-term pregnancy for different analyses. Group D1 presented a higher mortality percentage after STZ administration than groups D2 and D5. All diabetic groups presented higher blood glucose levels as compared to those of the control group, while group D5 had higher levels of glycemia compared with other groups during OGTT. The diabetic groups showed impaired reproductive outcomes compared with the control group. Group D1 had lower percentages of mated rats and D5 showed a lower percentage of a full-term pregnancy. Besides that, these two groups also showed the highest percentages of inadequate fetal weight. In summary, although all groups fulfill the diagnosis criteria for diabetes in adult life, in our investigation diabetes induced on D5 presents lower costs and higher efficacy and reproducibility for studies involving diabetes-complicated pregnancy.

ABSTRACT   The research aims to know the effectiveness of the use of reciprocal style in developing the skillful self and learning some basic skills in football among fifth grade literary students as well as knowing which is better (reciprocal style or the method used) in the variables of the current study, the researcher used the experimental approach to suit the nature of the research as for the research sample It was represented by the literary fifth grade students in Anah Preparatory School for Boys, and the number (20) students were divided into two groups by (10) students for each group, for whom pre-tests were taken on the scale of self-skill and basic skills in football.                  Then the experimental group applied its independent variable (the reciprocal method), then the control group applied (the method used), and the researcher applied the principle of the gradation from easy to difficult in implementing the exercises during the lesson session, and the results were processed by the statistical bag program (SPSS), and the researcher concluded that Positive effectiveness in developing self-skill and learning some basic football skills among literary fifth-grade students, and the researcher recommended using this method in other activities and paying attention to all soccer skills in football.

Background. Most research has indicated that neuroticism (or trait anxiety) is associated with only negative outcomes. Such a common, heritable and variable trait is expected to have beneficial as well as detrimental effects. We tested the hypothesis that trait anxiety in childhood reduces the risk of dying from accidental causes in early adult life.Method. A longitudinal, population-based, birth cohort study of 4070 men and women born in the UK in 1946. Trait anxiety as judged by teachers when the participants were 13 and 15 years old, and the neuroticism scale of a Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI) when the participants were 16 years old. Outcomes were deaths, deaths from accidents, non-fatal accidents, and non-fatal accidents requiring medical intervention.Results. Adolescents with low trait anxiety had higher rates of accident mortality to age 25 [low anxiety at 13, hazard ratio (HR) 5·9, low anxiety at 15, HR 1·8]. Low trait anxiety in adolescence was associated with decreased non-accidental mortality after age 25 (low anxiety at 13, HR 0; low anxiety at 15, HR 0·7; low neuroticism at 16, HR 0·7).Conclusions. High trait anxiety measured in adolescence is associated with reduced accidents and accidental death in early adulthood but higher rates of non-accidental mortality in later life.

Abstract The radula is the food gathering and processing structure and one important autapomorphy of the Mollusca. It is composed of a chitinous membrane with small, embedded teeth representing the interface between the organism and its ingesta. In the past, various approaches aimed at connecting the tooth shapes, which are highly distinct within single radulae due to their different functions. However, conclusions from the literature have been mainly drawn from microscopical analyses of mounted radulae, but the real interacting radular parts – even though the precise contact areas are essential for determining a tools functionality – and the 3D architecture of this complex feeding structure have not been previously determined. In the experimental approach presented here individuals of Vittina turrita (Neritidae, Gastropoda) were fed with algae paste attached to different sandpaper types. By comparison with radulae from a control group, sandpaper-induced tooth wear patterns were identified and both the area and volume loss were quantified. In addition to the exact contact area of each tooth, conclusions about the 3D position of teeth and the radular bending during feeding motion could be drawn. Furthermore, hypotheses about the specific functions of individual tooth types could be put forward. This kind of feeding experiments under controlled conditions is new for Mollusca and may provide a good basis for future studies on the radula functional morphology. It can be potentially applied to species with distinct tooth morphologies and ecological niches.

This research attempted to explore the effects of divergent and convergent tasks on the successful reading of EFL students at the preparatory stage. To verify the analysis, the null hypothesis was established that states "There are no differences of statistical significance at the level of (0,05) among the mean of scores of the experimental group who study according to divergent and convergent task technique and the mean of the scores of the control group who study according to the regular method".  The experimental approach is used by designing two equivalent experimental groups of 32 students studying the technique proposed, and an 8-week (2019-2020) control group of 32 students, three classes each week using the Google Classroom Platform and Telegram. The present study utilized the platform Google Classroom (GC) and Telegram as an educational platform to assist students during their course learning process. The writing skills test was administered after checking with the experts. The results show that there are statistical differences at level (0,05) between the average of the experimental and control groups' reading skills and those of the experimental group. This difference is because the experimental group uses divergent and convergent tasks.

Cigarettes have long been recognized as a risk factor for various health problems, and are the world's largest preventable cause of death1. Teenagers are more easily influenced especially by social groups to do negative things, such as smoking2. Currently the trend to start smoking is increasing among teenagers. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of health promotion presented in the form of audio-visual and interactive dialogue on interest in quitting smoking in teens in Palembang. This research is an analytic study through a quasi-experimental approach with a pretest-posttest two group research design without control group. The research sample consisted of 206 teenage smokers, divided into 2 groups, namely 103 teenage in the video group and 103 teenage in the interactive dialogue group. This study uses paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney test. This study reveals that health promotion through video media and interactive dialogue is effective to elevate the knowledge and interest in smoking cessation among teenagers (p = 0.000 α = 0.05). The mean value of knowledge and interest in the interactive dialogue group is higher than in the video group. However, there was no difference concerning effectiveness of health promotion through interactive dialogue and videos on the knowledge and interest in quitting smoking among teenagers. (p = 0.21 α = 0.05).

Three separate experiments were performed to evaluate how the topography of a behavioral response and its consequences influence the behavioral effects produced by ozone (O3) exposure. The first experiment measured the responding of food-deprived rats working to obtain intermittent delivery of small pellets of food by completing an active response, wheel running. Low O3 concentrations (0.12 ppm) reduced the frequency of running responses maintained by this fixed-interval 10-min schedule of food delivery. The second experiment examined the effects of O2 on food-deprived rats performing a response (nose poking) that required minimal physical effort to produce deliveries of food pellets. Rats in this situation began to show reductions in responding at 0.5 ppm O3. A third experiment showed that responses requiring minimal physical effort, such as lever pressing, can be a sensitive index of O3 exposure if the response provides access to wheel running. We concluded that increased physical activity during exposure appeared to be an important variable in determining sensitivity to O3 exposure.
