AbstractApoptosis and antioxidant mechanisms are pathways for the treatment of endometriosis (Endo). Rutin (Rtn) is an antioxidant flavonol that induces apoptosis. This study, for first time, was conducted to evaluate the effects of rutin on Endo through apoptosis and antioxidant mechanisms. The experimental Endo was induced in 24 rats and then the animals were subdivided into Endo-sole, 3000 and 6000 µg/kg rutin (Rtn-3000 and Rtn-6000) and vitamin C groups. After 4 weeks, the expression of Bcl2, Bax, anti Pro Caspase-9, cleaved Caspase-9, pro PARP, pro Cleaved PARP, Pro PARP, pro mTOR and mTOR were assessed by western blotting technique. The protein concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity, and super oxide dismutase and gutathione peroxidase were also evaluated. TUNEL staining was also used for the detection of apoptosis. Caspase-9 and concentration of antioxidants were higher in the treated groups compared to Endo-sole group (P < 0.05). The results also showed that rutin decreased the expression of Bcl2 and MDA concentration (P < 0.05). The results for TUNEL staining showed that the animals treated with Rtn-6000 and vitamin C showed higher apoptosis. Rutin induces apoptosis by the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and caspase and also antioxidant activity by increasing antioxidants concentrations.

The effect of five mineral nutrients on the variability of the content of biochemical compounds, such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, vitamin C, carotenoids and the antioxidant activity of kale (Brassica Oleracea var. sabellica) collected at the edible maturity stage. Manipulation of the phytochemical composition of the kale cabbage using mineral fertilizers was evident in the results achieved. The various mineral nutrients used had different effects on the content of the studied phytochemicals. The content of flavonoids and carotenoids did not decrease with any of the various mineral nutrients used. Contrary to recent research suggesting that rare earth elements are good stimulators of secondary metabolite accumulation, our results showed a decrease in the content of phenolic compounds in plants fertilized with neodymium. The total antioxidant activity increased under the influence of NPK and humate, which correlated with the highest content of soluble phenolic compounds and flavonoids in kale leaves. Low doses of N have a positive effect on these indicators. Mineral supplements of trace elements also had a stimulating effect on the accumulation of the studied substances. However, in addition to trace elements, a significant role is played by the presence of humic acids (in humate), which together with trace elements have the maximum stimulating effect on the content of the substances under study. One of the richest natural sources of resveratrol - the rhizome of Reynoutria japonica in East Asia is a well-known traditional herb (Hu zhang) used in various inflammatory diseases, infections, skin diseases, scald, hyperlipidemia. Although, it has been recently included in the European Pharmacopoeia, still in Europe is an untapped resource. Some of the therapeutic effects are likely to be influenced by its antioxidant properties and this in turn is frequently associated with a high stilbene content. However, some literatures suggested that other compounds than stilbenes may add to the total antioxidant capacity. Hence, the aim of this research was to examine rhizomes of R. japonica and less studied, morphologically similar species, R. sachalinensis and R. x bohemica for their phytochemical composition and antioxidant activity and to clarify the relationship between the antioxidant activity and compounds by statistical methods. HPLC/UV/ESI-MS studies of three Reynoutria species revealed 171 compounds comprising stilbenes, carbohydrates, procyanidins, flavan-3-ols, anthraquinones, phenylpropanoids, lignin oligomers, hydroxycinnamic acids, naphthalenes and their derivatives. Our studies confirmed the presence of procyanidins with high degree of polymerization, up to decamers in the rhizomes of R. japonica and brings new data on the presence of these compounds in other Reynoutria species. A procyanidin trimer digallate was described for the first time in the studied plants. Moreover, we suggested a presence of new for these species, dianthrone glycosides and previously unrecorded phenylpropanoid disaccharide esters and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, mainly in R. sachalinensis. Furthemore, compounds tentatively annotated as lignin oligomers were observed for the first time in studied species. The rhizomes of all Reynoutria species exhibited strong antioxidant activity. Statistical analysis demonstrated that proanthocyanidins should be considered as important contributors to the total antioxidant capacity.

Objective: To evaluate the oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pre and post hemodialysis in chronic renal failure patients using a diacetate cellulose membrane. Background: Chronic Renal Failure is a gradual, progressive and irreversible loss of normal functioning of kidneys. This is associated with increased formation of reactive oxygen species and increased oxidative stress. No studies have been undertaken in this area in Nepal. Method: The study groups were devided into chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis (n=52) and healthy controls (n=52). Diacetate cellulose was used as dialyzer membrane for chronic renal failure patients. Blood samples were collected in EDTAbottles and plasma was used for the estimation of oxidative stress marker, total antioxidant activity, vitamin C, ?-tocopherol, urea and creatinine. Results: There was significant reduction in the levels of vitamin C,? -tocopherol and total antioxidant activity in post dialysis patients compared to predialysis and control groups (p<0.001). Plasma urea and creatinine levels were high in predialysis patients compared to controls and was significantly reduced after dialysis. Significantly elevated malondialdehyde levels were found in chronic renal failure patients before and after dialysis when compared with controls. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that there are reduced levels antioxidants in chronic renal patients in pre and post dialysis condition and also more loss of antioxidants after dialysis. All these condition leads to increased oxidative stress in these patients. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjms.v13i1.14741 Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol. 13 No. 01 January2014: 40-44

Vanda roxburghii has been used in traditional medicine to treat nervous system disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We reported earlier a high acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant activity in the chloroform fraction of this plant. Therefore, this study was designed to explore the compounds with acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant activities from the chloroform fraction of Vanda roxburghii. Phytochemical investigation led to the isolation for the first time of a fatty acid ester: methyl linoleate (1), and three phenolics: syringaldehyde (2), vanillin (3), and dihydroconiferyl dihydro-p-coumarate (4) along with the previously reported compound gigantol (5). Among the isolates, vanillin (3) and dihydroconiferyl dihydro-p-coumarate (4) were found to significantly inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase, scavenge the free radicals, exhibit the reducing power and total antioxidant activity, and effectively reduce the peroxidation of lipid. Gigantol (5) and syringaldehyde (2), despite lacking the activity against acetylcholinesterase, exhibited antioxidant activity. Among the compounds, gigantol (5) appeared to be the most potent antioxidant. These findings revealed that V. roxburghii contained compounds with potential acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant activity, which support its traditional use in the treatment of AD.

Several scientific studies point fruits as rich sources of antioxidants but mainly focus on their edible part. However, fruits wastes are abundant sources of bioactive compounds and nutrients, which are considered to be health beneficial. The main purpose was to characterise juice, pulp, peel and seeds of Piel de Sapo melon, in terms of several physicochemical characteristics (soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, potassium, colour and water activity), some bioactive compounds (total phenolics, vitamin C, chlorophylls and total carotenoids) and total antioxidant activity. Juice, pulp, peel and seeds represent 47, 19, 27 and 5% of melon total weight, respectively. Peel and seeds stood out by their higher concentration of total phenolics compounds and antioxidant activity when compared to edible parts. The highest potassium concentration was found in seeds. Chlorophylls were only detected in peel, while carotenoids were not detected in any part of the melon analysed. Juice and pulp contributed to 69% of vitamin C amount of the whole fruit. However, its concentration in peel was equivalent to the ones observed in juice and pulp. These results pointed out the importance of fruit wastes valorisation and the development of strategies for their re-utilisation.

The article gives a comparative analysis of the data obtained by Russian and foreign scientists considering the content of vitamins and other valuable substances in raspberry fruit. That determines high antioxidant properties of raspberry. The goal of the study was to generalize information which shows specific nature of that plant in relation to the complex of vitamins and polyphenol compounds which it contains. The author shows that fruit of raspberry R. idaeus L. consists of 5–40 mg/100 g of vitamin C, folic acid - 26-44 mg/100 g. Consumption of only 100 g of raspberries satisfies daily requirement of vitamin C (60 mg) by 8.3 - 66.7%, in folates (200 mg) by 13–22%. Total anthocyanin content in red raspberry varies within wide range (20–100 mg/100 g), in black raspberry – form 200 to 600 mg/100 g. Raspberry accumulates from 38 to 270 mg/100 g of ellagic acid. In small amounts the cultivated red raspberry consists of the following substances: carotenoids (β-carotene – 9.3 mg/100 g, zeaxanthin – 11 mg/100 g, lutein – 320 mg /100 g), vitamin E – 0.15–0.44 mg/100 g tocopherol equivalents, thiamine – 0,020 mg/100 g, riboflavin – 0.034 mg/100 g, niacin – 0.036 mg/100 g, pyridoxin – 0.05 mg/100 g, biotin – 5.7 mg/100 g. Total content of antioxidants in the cultivated raspberry fruit is 1.71 mg/g (standard quercetin). As a result of the analysis of different literary sources the author determined that raspberry antioxidant properties are mainly connected with high polyphenol content. Contribution of vitamin C into total antioxidant activity is relatively low. Though raspberry fruit chemical composition has already been studied quite well it is necessary to perform further more detailed research of different raspberry cultivars considering their total antioxidant activity as well as certain biochemical components which comprise antioxidant complex of raspberry fruit. The obtained results will form the base for further research aimed at investigating phytochemical compounds of fruit crops which have become an essential part of healthy human diet and developing nutraceutical products.
