An attempt has been made to develop and study the properties and behavior of structure-based aluminum composite. Aluminum (AA6063)-based composites were fabricated by stir casting technique (also known as liquid metallurgy route) by varying weight percentage of metallic-based copper nitrate Cu (NO3)2 with fixed proposition of ceramic-based silicon nitride (Si3N4) reinforcement. The mechanical and corrosion properties and tribological behavior of composite were studied. Further, the sample microstructure and characterizations were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The composite with fixed weight proportion of ceramic and higher metallic reinforced samples shows higher tensile strength, improved corrosion resistance, and higher hardness behavior. Due to higher hardness nature, the tribological properties of composite such as wear rate and coefficient of friction have been reduced. Moreover, the impact strength of composite decreased due to combination of ceramic and metallic reinforcement. In addition to the above study, design of experiment (DOE) was adopted to optimize the major wear test parameters such as percentage of reinforcement, applied load, sliding distance, and sliding speed. Finally, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out to identify the most significant test parameter and its interaction affecting wear behavior and its coefficient of friction of composite sample.

Purpose Aluminium is the most preferred material in engineering structural components because of its excellent properties. Furthermore, the properties of aluminium may be enhanced through metal matrix composites and an in-depth investigation on the evolved properties is needed in view of metallurgical, mechanical and tribological aspects. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of TiC addition on the tribological behavior of aluminium composites. Design/methodology/approach Aluminium metal matrix composites at different weight percentage of titanium carbide were produced through powder metallurgy. Produced composites were subjected to sliding wear test under dry condition through Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal design. Findings Optimal process condition to achieve the minimum wear rate was identified though the main effect plot. Sliding velocity was identified as the most dominating factor in the wear resistance. Practical implications The production of components with improved properties is promoted efficiently and economically by synthesizing the composite via powder metallurgy. Originality/value Though the investigations on the wear behavior of aluminium composites are analyzed, reinforcement types and the mode of fabrication have their significance in the metallurgical and mechanical properties. Thus, the produced component needs an in-detail study on the property evolution.

The performance of a biolubricant especially palm oil is well known to be lower than a mineral oil lubricant. Due to a huge demand towards sustainability, it is extremely important to make an effort for biolubricant to be competitive at the same shelf as the mineral oil in the world’s lubricants market. In this study, tribological properties of the palm oil biolubricant modified with Titanium Oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles as additives were investigated. Palm oil biolubricant with TiO2 nanoparticles at weight ratios of 0 to 0.2 wt% were mixed using an ultrasonic technique. The viscosity of biolubricant modified additives was conducted using standard of ASTMD445. The tribological behavior was investigated using a four-ball tribotester. Results indicate that the viscosities of samples increased as the weight percentage of the TiO2 nanoadditives increased for both 40°C and 100°C temperatures Sample of lubricant with 0.1% wt of the TiO2 nanoadditives produced the lowest coefficient of friction (COF) and wear scar diameter.

AbstractThe wear behavior of Al/SiC composites prepared by stir casting technique is investigated to find out the effects of the weight percentage of SiC, load, and the number of strokes on a shaper machine. Metal matrix composite (MMC) pins are prepared with different weight percentages of SiC (10%, 15%, and 20%). The tests are carried out with different load conditions (25, 50 and 75 N) and different number of strokes (420,780 and 1605 strokes). Wear surfaces of tested samples are examined in scanning electron microscope (SEM). Hardness and impact tests are also carried out on the MMC samples. The experimental results show that the hardness of composites increases with an increase in SiC particle, and the impact strength decreases with increase in SiC content. The volume loss of MMC specimens are less than that of the matrix alloy. Moreover, the temperature rise near the contact surface of the MMC specimens increases with increase in wt% of SiC, load, and number of strokes. The coefficient of friction decreases with increase in load and the number of strokes.

Aluminum Composite are widely used in aviation and automotive industries because it is light in weight hence it reduces the fuel consumption and improves the energy efficiency. The present work deals with preparing Aluminum-based particle reinforced composite fabricated through Stir Casting Process wherein Sic along with Graphite are used as reinforcements which has improved mechanical properties with reduction in weight. Impact toughness, hardness along with wear property of the fabricated composite samples were tested and compared with Al 5052 Cast Alloy based on ASTM Standard. From the testing, we can conclude that Impact toughness, Hardness and wear properties of Al 5052 base alloy is considerably increased due to the addition of particulate reinforcements. And also there is not much studies reported on the influence of Sic and Graphite as reinforcement on Impact toughness, hardness along with Wear behavior of Al 5052 alloy. So the objective of the current work is to fabricate Al 5052 base alloy reinforced with particulate composite by stir casting process and to study the Impact toughness, hardness, and microstructure along with wear behavior of the fabricated composites.

Lightweight cement mortars containing end-of-life tire rubber (TR) as aggregate were prepared and characterized by rheological, thermal, mechanical, microstructural, and wetting tests. The mixtures were obtained after total replacement of the conventional sand aggregate with untreated TR with different grain sizes (0–2 mm and 2–4 mm) and distributions (25%, 32%, and 40% by weight). The mortars showed lower thermal conductivities (≈90%) with respect to the sand reference due to the differences in the conductivities of the two phases associated with the low density of the aggregates and, to a minor extent, to the lack of adhesion of tire to the cement paste (evidenced by microstructural detection). In this respect, a decrease of the thermal conductivities was observed with the increase of the TR weight percentage together with a decrease of fluidity of the fresh mixture and a decrease of the mechanical strengths. The addition of expanded perlite (P, 0–1 mm grain size) to the mixture allowed us to obtain mortars with an improvement of the mechanical strengths and negligible modification of the thermal properties. Moreover, in this case, a decrease of the thermal conductivities was observed with the increase of the P/TR dosage together with a decrease of fluidity and of the mechanical strengths. TR mortars showed discrete cracks after failure without separation of the two parts of the specimens, and similar results were observed in the case of the perlite/TR samples thanks to the rubber particles bridging the crack faces. The super-elastic properties of the specimens were also observed in the impact compression tests in which the best performances of the tire and P/TR composites were evidenced by a deep groove before complete failure. Moreover, these mortars showed very low water penetration through the surface and also through the bulk of the samples thanks to the hydrophobic nature of the end-of-life aggregate, which makes these environmentally sustainable materials suitable for indoor and outdoor elements.

Multiscale hybrid composites were prepared using varying weight percentages (0 to 5) of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as nanofiller and a fixed weight percentage (20) of short glass fibres as micro filler (in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The shear and extensional viscosity of the composites was measured using a capillary rheometer. It was observed that even at higher shear rates the synergism of micro and nanofillers in the matrix significantly enhanced the melt viscosity. The complex nanotube network entanglement with micro fillers and PP chains imparted restrictions to the polymer chain movements. The prepared samples were subjected to thermal ageing at 100°C for 4 days in hot air oven. After ageing, multiscale composite with 3 wt% MWCNTs exhibited 28.57% enhancement in strain at break, whereas the tensile strength and modulus reduced by 6.8% and 8% respectively. The fracture toughness properties like strain energy release rate and critical stress intensity factor were not affected for multiscale composite at the optimum content of 3 wt% MWCNT, even after thermal ageing.

This report described the Impact Test result and Bioactivity Properties of biodegradable Polycaprolactone (PCL) blend with nano- Montmorillonite (MMT) and Hydroxyapatite (HA). The amount of nano-MMT is varies from 2 to 4 by weight % meanwhile the amount of HA is fixed to 10 by weight percentage (wt%). The addition of nano-MMT and HA filler is to tune and indirectly improve the mechanical and bioactive properties of PCL. The samples for these test are injected from injection molding machine. The Impact test are conducted using Charpy Method. From the analysis it is found that the toughness of PCL are decreased by the addition of these fillers. PCL/MMT composites gives a better result compare to PCL/MMT/HA composites. This is due to the HA characteristic which is brilttle and tends to reduce the ductile properties of the polymer. From the Simulated Body Fluis (SBF) result, formation of apatite layer at the surface of the composites is evidence of excellent bioactivity properties of HA. The enhance of bioactivity has been proved while incorporation of HA into PCL/MMT composite. SEM-EDX image showed the bulk formation of apatite layers on the composite surface with 10 wt% HA after 3 days immersed in SBF solution.

Purchase behavior and preferences for consumers of fresh apples were investigated using a consumer survey conducted at a special-event apple market. Survey respondents were asked to list apple cultivars they had purchased at the retail market and the special-event market. The special-event market offered many uncommon cultivars packed in clear plastic bags with a fixed weight and price. Respondents were also asked to identify their reasons for selection of each apple cultivar and answer demographic questions. A total of 169 customers completed the survey. Profiles of customers were identified using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), and the impact of the change in available apple cultivars on consumers’ purchase behavior was explored. Consumers primarily indicated four main reasons in the selection of their apples: visual appearance, previous experience, taste/aroma, and texture. The first two reasons, evaluated before eating an apple, were loaded on the first MCA dimension, while the last two reasons (i.e., eating quality) were loaded on the second dimension in data from both marketplaces. HCA identified five classes of customers in both markets, and results indicated that similar market segments existed within the two marketplaces, regardless of the availability of apple cultivars.

Composite material is a material that has a multi-phase system composed of reinforcing materials and matrix materials. Causes the composite materials to have advantages in various ways such as low density, high mechanical properties, performance comparable to metal, corrosion resistance, and easy to fabricate. In the marine and fisheries industry, composite materials made from fiber reinforcement, especially fiberglass, have proven to be very special and popular in boat construction because they have the advantage of being chemically inert (both applied in general and marine environments), light, strong, easy to print, and price competitiveness. Thus in this study, tensile and impact methods were used to determine the mechanical properties of fiberglass polymer composite materials. Each test is carried out on variations in the amount of fiberglass laminate CSM 300, CSM 450 and WR 600 and variations in weight percentage 99.5% -0.5%, 99% -1%, 98.5% -1, 5%, 98% -2% and 97.5%-2.5% have been used. The results showed that the greater the number of laminates, the greater the impact strength, which was 413,712 MPa, and the more the percentage of hardener, the greater the impact strength, which was 416,487 MPa. The results showed that the more laminate the tensile strength increased, which was 87.054 MPa, and the more the percentage of hardener, the lower the tensile strength, which was 73.921 MPa.
