The purpose of this study was to determine the friction coefficients and wear rates of six commercially available dental ceramics including IPS Empress 2 (E2), Cergo Pressable Ceramic (CPC), Cercon Ceram (CCS) and Super porcelain EX-3 (SPE). Bovine enamel (BE) was also tested as a reference material for comparison purposes. Samples of the dental ceramics were prepared according to the instructions described by the manufacturers in disk-shape with nominal dimensions of 12 mm × 2 mm. The wear tests were performed by means of a pin-on-disk type tribometer. The friction coefficients and specific wear rates of the materials were determined at a load of 10 N and rotating speed of 0.25 cm/s without lubrication. Surface morphology of the wear tracks was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical analyses were made using one-way ANOVA and Turkey's HSD (P < 0.05).

The wear behavior of powder metallurgical Ti-47Al-2Cr-0.2Mo alloy prepared by pre-alloyed powders was investigated using pin-on-disk wear tests in different environments, viz, argon, 4% hydrogen in nitrogen, air and oxygen. The disk material was sinter-hot isostatically pressed, yttria-stabilized zirconia. Lower wear rates were found for the TiAl pins in oxygen-free environments, indicating that oxygen play a key role in the wear rate. In contrast, the presence of molecular hydrogen and moisture have nearly no effect. A combination of X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated that the abrasive particles present mainly consisted of the zirconia. In addition, zirconia particles were embedded in the worn tips of the TiAl pins and mixed into the tribolayers. The high stress and high contact temperature at the wear surface made the zirconia disk undergo a phase transformation during the dry sliding wear, accompanied by grain pullout, surface uplifting and microcracking. The hard tribolayer with embedded zirconia particles provides some protection against further wear of the TiAl pin. The highly localized, repetitive shear stress during the wear tests may bring about amorphous TiAl in the wear debris. The main wear mechanisms were abrasive wear of two-body and three-body, some delamination and plastic deformation.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the friction and wear performance of pure polycarbonate (PC) and 5-30 per cent wollastonite-filled (by weight) PC were comparatively evaluated under dry sliding conditions. Wear tests were carried out at room temperature under the loads of 5-20 N and at the sliding speeds of 0.5-1.5 m/s. Design/methodology/approach – The microstructures of the wollastonite, pure PC and composites were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The friction and wear tests were realized using a pin-on-disk arrangement against the hardened AISI 4140 steel. Findings – The result of this study indicated that the coefficients of friction wear rate of the materials were significantly influenced by an increase in wollastonite content. The friction coefficient of the PC was getting decreased from 0.457 to 0.198 with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads and sliding speeds. On the other hand, the results showed that the wear rates of pure PC and wollastonite-filled PCs decreased with an increase in loads. The wear rate of the PC decreased from 1.2 × 10−6 to 8.7 × 10−6 mm3/m with an increase in wollastonite content, depending on applied loads. Originality/value – There are many reports which deal with the friction and wear performance of the polymers and polymer composites. However, the effect of wollastonite effect on tribological performance of PC has up to now not been extensively researched.

Nanostructured and conventional WC-Co coatings were deposited on 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel substrate using an atmospheric plasma spraying facility. The friction and wear behavior of the resulting cermet composite coatings in water environment was comparatively investigated. It was found that the nanostructured and conventional WC-Co coatings had similar friction coefficients under the same testing conditions. However, the nanostructured WC-Co coating had better wear resistance than the conventional WC-Co coating as slid against both Si3N4 ball and stainless steel ball. At the same time, the stainless steel or Si3N4 counterpart matched with the nanostructured WC-Co coating had a much smaller wear rate as well, and as compared to rubbing against the ceramic ball counterpart, the two types of coatings rubbing against the stainless steel ball registered lower friction coefficients and wear rates.

Friction and wear contribute to high energetic losses that reduce the efficiency of mechanical systems. However, carbon alloyed transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD-C) coatings possess low friction coefficients in diverse environments and can self-adapt to various sliding conditions. Hence, in this investigation, a semi-industrial magnetron sputtering device, operated in direct current mode (DC), is utilized to deposit several molybdenum-selenium-carbon (Mo-Se-C) coatings with a carbon content up to 60 atomic % (at. %). Then, the carbon content influence on the final properties of the films is analysed using several structural, mechanical and tribological characterization techniques. With an increasing carbon content in the Mo-Se-C films, lower Se/Mo ratio, porosity and roughness appeared, while the hardness and compactness increased. Pin-on-disk (POD) experiments performed in humid air disclosed that the Mo-Se-C vs. nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) friction is higher than Mo-Se-C vs. steel friction, and the coefficient of friction (CoF) is higher at 25 °C than at 200 °C, for both steel and NBR countersurfaces. In terms of wear, the Mo-Se-C coatings with 51 at. % C showed the lowest specific wear rates of all carbon content films when sliding against steel. The study shows the potential of TMD-based coatings for friction and wear reduction sliding against rubber.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was introduced into Ni60/Al2O3coating by flame spraying. The effect of adding CNTs on the tribological properties of the coating was studied by varying the CNTs content as 0.0, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 wt% in the Ni60/Al2O3powders. The microhardness tester was used to measure the microhardness of the coating. Wear tests were performed on a pin-on-disk tribometer, to evaluate the tribological properties of the Ni60/Al2O3/CNTs coatings. Microstructural characterization was performed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Ni60/Al2O3/CNTs coatings revealed a lower wear rate and friction coefficient compared with the original coating, and their wear rates and friction coefficients showed a decreasing trend with increasing mass fraction of CNTs within the range from 0 to 3.0 wt% due to the effects of the reinforcement and reduced friction of CNTs. The results showed that the CNTs played dual roles in improving the tribological performance of the coating, indirectly by influencing the microstructure and mechanical properties of the coating and directly by acting as a lubricating medium.

The friction and wear behavior of Si3N4-based composites against AISI-52100 steel were investigated in the ball-on-disk mode in a nonlubrication reciprocation motion. It has been found that under the conditions used, all the ceramic components exhibited rather low friction and wear coefficients. For monolithic silicon nitride materials, high friction coefficients between 0.6 and 0.7 and wear coefficients between 1.63 × 10−8 and 1.389 × 10−6 mm3/N · m were measured. The contact load was varied from 100 to 300 N. By adding titanium nitride, the friction coefficients were reduced to a value between 0.4 and 0.5 and wear coefficients between 1.09 × 10−8 and 0.32 × 10−6 mm3/ N · m at room temperature. All materials and worn surfaces as well as wear debris were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) before or after the tribological tests. The TEM micrographs of wear track revealed plastic deformation through twins and cracking along grain boundary which play an important role in the fracture mechanism.

AbstractIn this study, the influence of micro- and nanofiller contents on the tribological performance of epoxy composites was studied. The fillers are micro-Al2O3, micro-TiO2, and micro-fly ash and nano-Al2O3, nano-TiO2, and nanoclay fillers. The microfillers were added to the epoxy by 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight. The nanofillers were added to the epoxy by 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Friction and wear tests were conducted using the pin-on-disc arrangement. Tribo elements consisted of polymer pin and DIN 1.2344 steel counterface disc. A load value of 15 N, a sliding speed of 0.4 m/s, a sliding distance of 2000 m, and dry atmospheric conditions were applied to test conditions. The results show that the friction coefficients and the specific wear rates of the nanofilled composites increase as the filler content increases. For microfiller-filled epoxy composites, these values decrease as filler content increases. The tribological performance of epoxy composites is enhanced by the addition of microfillers, and the higher enhancement is reached with the addition of 30% fly ash filler. Finally, the pin and disc worn surface images show the presence of adhesive and some abrasive wear mechanisms.

The effect of various operational factors, such as sliding speed, normal load and temperature on the tribological properties of Date palm fruit syrup (DPFS) as an environmentally friendly lubricant, is investigated. Ball-on-disc wear tests are conducted on mild steel samples in the presence of DPFS as a lubricant under different conditions and the coefficient of friction and wear rate are measured. Scanning electron microscopy, stylus profilometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are used to evaluate the wear tracks to determine the underlying wear mechanisms. Results showed that DPFS has excellent tribological properties in terms of low friction and low wear rates making it a potential candidate to be used as a lubricant in tribological applications.

In this study, the wear behavior of 9SiCr steel under different treatment with plant abrasive was evaluated by using an abrasive rubber wheel tester. The samples’ microstructures were analyzed by a metallurgical microscope, the samples’ worn surface morphology was observed by using SEM.The results show that: With the increasing of hardness of sample, Its wear resistance is greatly improved. Hardness of laser quenching sample is the highest, wear resistance of it is the best, the second is sub temperature sample. The wear rates and the wear coefficients are proportional to the sliding distance. The Laser quenching samplel display a consistent behaviour with a very low wear rate and a small increase of the wear damage is observed during the abrasive wear tests. The worn surfaces of the three kind samples are characterized by the micro-cutting wear, and no treatment sample is accompanied by fatigue wear mechanism.

Assuming that harder asperities sliding on a flat surface were semicylindrical with the hemispherical ends, whose surface consisted of a series of spherical micro-asperities, effects of the number of contact points n, total area Sp of the cross-sections of grooves ploughed by harder asperities and depth of plastic zone on the coefficient of friction and wear for ceramics were theoretically analyzed. To verify theory, wear tests with various ceramic pins and a Si3N4 disk were carried out at a sliding speed of 1.63 m/s and under load of 0.98 N with no lubrication. The sizes of wear scratches on the worn surfaces were measured by means of a Talysurf and SEM photographs. The wear rates of the pins and Si3N4 disks increased with an increase in the mean cross-sectional area Sp/n of the scratches. This trend agreed with the theoretical results, which also showed that the Sp values were proportional to the wear rates. Theory also indicated the existence of a new criterion applicable to estimation of the wear rate.
