Nutritional Status Associated to Skipping Breakfast in Brazilian Health Service Patients

Recent studies show that skipping breakfast is associated with an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In this context, this study evaluated 400 patients from the Brazilian health service who had their nutritional status defined based on the body mass index and were classified as physically active or insufficient active. The energy intake and macronutrients was also assessed by a 24-hour dietary recall where the association of overweight/obesity with the investigated variables was evaluated using chi-square, Student's t test and multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). The main results showed that more than half of the studied population have the habit of omitting breakfast (55.8%), and among those, 81.2% were overweight/obese (p < 0.0001). Almost three-fourths of these individuals consumed no more than 4 meals a day (73.0%), and regarding this meal frequency/day, 78.8% of the individuals who reported having 4 meals or less a day were overweight/obese compared with 57.8% who reported as having 5-6 meals/day (p < 0.0001). The individuals who reported to omit breakfast had a higher chance of being overweight compared with those who had this habit (OR 2.20; 95% CI 1.40-3.60) and the chance of the physically insufficient active individuals to be overweight/obese was 2.9 times higher when compared to the active individuals (p < 0.0001). Our findings suggest that regular breakfast consumption may decrease overweight and obesity risk.

ABSTRAK Data Riskesdas 2018 menunjukkan bahwa 25,7% remaja usia 13-15 tahun dan 26,9% remaja usia 16-18 tahun dengan status gizi pendek dan sangat pendek. Selain itu terdapat 8,7% remaja usia 13-15 tahun dan 8,1% remaja usia 16-18 tahun dengan kondisi kurus dan sangat kurus. Sedangkan prevalensi berat badan lebih dan obesitas sebesar 16,0% pada remaja usia 13-15 tahun dan 13,5% pada remaja usia 16-18 tahun. Data tersebut merepresentasikan kondisi gizi pada remaja di Indonesia yang harus diperbaiki. Berdasarkan baseline survey UNICEF pada tahun 2017, ditemukan adanya perubahan pola makan dan aktivitas fisik pada remaja. Gizi merupakan salah satu faktor utama penentu kualitas hidup dan sumber daya manusia. Tujuan penelitian Untuk mengetahui hubungan perilaku makan terhadap status gizi pada siswi SMAN 2 Tambang 2018. Penelitian ini mengunakan jenis kuantitatif analitik dengan desain cross sectional.  Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa putri SMAN 2 Tambang dari kelas XI sebanyak 240 orang  dengan sampel sebanyak 71 orang. Hasil uji Chi Square didapatkan nilai p=0,01 (≤ 0,05. In addition, there were 8.7% adolescents aged 13-15 years and 8.1% adolescents aged 16-18 years with thin and very thin conditions. Meanwhile, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 16.0% in adolescents aged 13-15 years and 13.5% in adolescents aged 16-18 years. Nutrition is one of the main factors determining the quality of life and human resources. Nutrients are chemicals found in food that the body needs to maintain health and immunity; adolescents are one of the groups that are prone to experiencing nutritional problems. The research objective was to determine the relationship between eating behavior and the nutritional status of students at SMAN 2 Tambang 2018. This research method used a quantitative analytic research type, with a cross sectional study design. The populations in this study were all 12 students of Tambang State Senior High School 2 from class XI totaling 240 students. The sample in this study was some of the 71 class students. The results of the Chi Square test showed that the value of p = 0.01 (≤ 0.05), this means that statistically there is a relationship between eating behavior and nutritional status in young girls. Keywords: eating behavior; nutritional status; female adolescent

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity in a representative sample of children and adolescents from a Brazilian region with low economic development. METHODS: A total of 982 girls and 986 boys, aged seven to 17 years old and assisted by Segundo Tempo Program, from Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil, were included in the study. Low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity were defined based on body mass cut-off indexes recommended by the International Obesity Task Force. The prevalence of the nutritional status according to sex and age was compared by chi-square test. RESULTS: In girls, the frequency of low body weight/thinness, overweight and obesity was 4.1, 18.4 and 3.8%, respectively; in boys, these percentages were 6.3, 13.2 and 2.9%, respectively. The low body weight/thinness for girls raised from 2.7% (7-10 years old) to 5.5% (15-17 years old); the body weight excess (overweight and obesity) decreased from 30.1 to 16.2% for the same age groups. In boys, the corresponding trends were from 3.2 to 9.4% for low body weight/thinness, and from 23.4 to 9.2%, for body weight excess. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that, even in a region with low economic status, the body weight excess was the main problem associated with nutritional health. The high overweight and obesity prevalence rates indicate the need of public policies for promoting healthy feeding behaviors and physical activity.

Sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) are thought to play an important role in weight gain. We examined the relationship between the intake of caloric and noncaloric beverages (SSB and water) and the nutritional status of children. In 2014, we randomly selected 16 public health clinics in four cities of Northwest Argentina and conducted a survey among mothers of children 0–6 years of age. Children’s beverage intake was ascertained by 24-h dietary recall provided by the mothers. Children’s weight and height measures were obtained from clinic’s registries. We calculated the body mass index using the International Obesity Task Force standards. The analysis included 562 children 25 months to 6 years of age with normal or above normal nutritional status. Children’s beverage consumption was as follows, water 81.8%, carbonated soft drinks (CSD) 49.7%, coffee/tea/cocoa 44.0%, artificial fruit drinks 35.6%, flavored water 17.9%, natural fruit juice 14.5%. In multivariate logistic regression models the likelihood of being obese v. being overweight or having normal weight doubled with an intake of one to five glasses of CSD (OR=2.2) and increased by more than three-fold with an intake of more than five glasses (OR=3.5). Drinking more than five glasses of water decreased the likelihood of being obese by less than half (OR=0.3). The percentage of children drinking more than five glasses of other beverages was low (3.3–0.9%) and regression models did not yield significant results. The study contributed evidence for reducing children’s CSD intake and for promoting water consumption, together with the implementation of comprehensive regulatory public health policies.

Abstract Background Nutritional status is an important indicator for measuring quality of life in children. A region that is recovering from war will face many problems related to nutrition. Very few studies have addressed the nutritional problems in school-going children. This study was undertaken to identify the prevalence of wasting, stunting and obesity of school children from Northern Sri Lanka and associated socio-demographic factorsMethods A community based cross-sectional study was carried out using multistage stratified proportionate cluster among healthy children attending schools in the Northern part of the country. Height and weight were measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated [weight (kg)/Height (m) ²]. BMI-for-age z-score (BAZ) and Height for age Z (HAZ) scores were determined and WHO growth references were used to categorise the nutritional status of the children. Correlation between various nutritional problems with Maternal education, household income, number of family members and the residential area was assessed. Results A total of 1012 children were recruited, and the mean age and standard deviation were 11.12±1.77yrs. Girls in the age ranges of 9-14 were heavier and taller when compared to the boys compatible to the pubertal growth spurt. Stunting based on the height for age was seen in 10.9% of boys and 11.8% of girls. Wasting based on BMI for age WHO standard (WHO 2007) was seen in 30.6% of boys and 29.1% of the girls. The prevalence of overweight was 11% and Obesity was 6.3% of the population. Obesity was predominantly seen in boys (4.2%) and it was significantly higher when compared to the girls (2.1%) (p <0.001). Older boys (>10 years) were significantly affected more than the younger ones (p <0.01). The prevalence of wasting, stunting, overweight and obesity had significant variations in different educational zones comparable with the geographical areas. Maternal Education and Family income had a significant impact on the prevalence of stunting and obesity. (p<0.001) whereas the family size significantly contributed to the wasting and obesity. Conclusion Findings suggest that stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity are prevalent among 6-16-year-old leading to concerns in public health. The nutritional status significantly vary according to the geographical location maternal education and the household income.

Introduction: The study of the nutritional status of the elderly deserves attention, since there is no consensus on the criteria for the evaluation of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of this population.Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status of elderly women practicing regular physical exercises, as well as to compare the World Health Organization (WHO) and Lipschitz criteria to the identification of health risk and to examine their agreement.Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with 76 elderly women in physical exercise groups in Petrolina-PE. The nutritional status was obtained by the calculation of BMI according to WHO and Lipschitz criteria. The analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the variables, followed by Tukey post hoc. The Kappa statistic established the agreement between the BMI criteria, the Spearman coefficient determined the correlation between BMI and abdominal circumference (AC).Results: Elderly patients aged 60-79 years were classified as being overweight by WHO and eutrophic by Lipschitz. Octogenarian demonstrated eutrophy, according to the criterion of Lipschitz, WHO diverged for this group between thinness and eutrophy. There was a weak agreement between both criteria, Kappa (0.232, p = 0.002) and a strong correlation between BMI and CA (r = 0.722, p <0.001).Conclusion: There was a divergence between the WHO and Lipschitz criteria. The WHO proved to be more sensitive to identifying overweight and obesity and Lipschitz's normal weight and malnutrition. The CA measure was more competent to detect health risk, especially in elderly eutrophic women.

AbstractBackgroundIncreased rates of overweight/obesity have been reported in recent years in developed countries. This population study of healthy subjects evaluated the changes in overweight/obesity prevalence in 2003, compared with 1993, and determined the association of age, sex and leisure-time activity with body mass index (BMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI) and fat mass index (FMI).DesignTwo transversal samples of convenience.ParticipantsHealthy volunteers (1993, n = 802; 2003, n = 1631).MethodsFat-free mass was determined using the bioelectrical impedance multiple regression equation. Multivariable linear regression, including confounding variables (age, sex, leisure-time activity), was used to model the body composition evolution between the 1993 and the 2003 subjects.ResultsBMI and FMI were higher in 2003 than in 1993, P < 0.001. FFMI was not higher in 2003 than in 1993, P = 0.38. More subjects were overweight/obese in 2003 than in 1993 (27.5 versus 17.2%, chi-square P < 0.001), and had a high FFMI (30.2 versus 21.8%, chi-square P < 0.001) and high FMI (28.0 versus 20.3%, chi-square P < 0.001). Multivariate linear regressions showed that leisure-time activity was negatively, and sex, age and inclusion year were positively associated with BMI, FFMI and FMI (the exception was a negative association with sex) (P < 0.001).ConclusionOverweight prevalence increased between 1993 and 2003 in a Swiss city, and was associated with a higher fat mass. This observation remained statistically significant after adjustment for age, sex and leisure-time activity.

It has been postulated that Helicobacter pylori infection could affect growth and appetite, consequently influencing body weight. Therefore, the association between H. pylori infection and the dietary and anthropometric indicators of nutritional status of a paediatric population were investigated. A total of 525 children (aged 4–16 years) who were referred to the gastroenterology unit of the Sor Maria Ludovica Children's Hospital from Buenos Aires, Argentina, were enrolled and completed an epidemiological questionnaire. H. pylori infection was diagnosed using the 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT). Height and weight were assessed for calculation of anthropometric indicators. Energy and macronutrient intakes were estimated by 24 h dietary recall. Data analysis was performed using a χ2 test, a Student's t test, a Mann–Whitney U test and linear and logistic regressions. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was 25·1 % (with a mean age of 10·1 (sd 3·1) years). A tendency towards lower energy, carbohydrate, protein and fat intakes was observed in infected patients; however, it was not associated with H. pylori infection in any of the evaluated age groups (4–8, 9–13 and 14–16 years). Underweight, stunting, overweight and obesity were also not associated with the infection. Although height-for-age and BMI-for-age Z scores tended to be lower in infected patients, the differences between H. pylori-positive and H. pylori-negative children were not statistically significant. In conclusion, H. pylori infection was not associated with dietary intake or with anthropometric indicators in the present population of children with gastrointestinal symptoms; however, an increased sample size would be needed to confirm the observed tendency towards lower dietary intake and lower anthropometric indicators of nutritional status in H. pylori-infected children.

Drugs and food interact mutually: drugs may affect the nutritional status of the body, acting on senses, appetite, resting energy expenditure, and food intake; conversely, food or one of its components may affect bioavailability and half-life, circulating plasma concentrations of drugs resulting in an increased risk of toxicity and its adverse effects, or therapeutic failure. Therefore, the knowledge of these possible interactions is fundamental for the implementation of a nutritional treatment in the presence of a pharmacological therapy. This is the case of chronic kidney disease (CKD), for which the medication burden could be a problem, and nutritional therapy plays an important role in the patient’s treatment. The aim of this paper was to review the interactions that take place between drugs and foods that can potentially be used in renal patients, and the changes in nutritional status induced by drugs. A proper definition of the amount of food/nutrient intake, an adequate definition of the timing of meal consumption, and a proper adjustment of the drug dosing schedule may avoid these interactions, safeguarding the quality of life of the patients and guaranteeing the effectiveness of drug therapy. Hence, a close collaboration between the nephrologist, the renal dietitian, and the patient is crucial. Dietitians should consider that food may interact with drugs and that drugs may affect nutritional status, in order to provide the patient with proper dietary suggestions, and to allow the maximum effectiveness and safety of drug therapy, while preserving/correcting the nutritional status.

Female model has a variety of body image and experiences social pressure to have low weight. Thus, there is a desire to lose weight with a variety of efforts, such as fad diets. This type of diet can lead to insufficient intake of nutrients in the body and increase the risk of health problems in the long run. The research aimed to analyze fad diets, nutritional status, and nutritional adequacy of female models in Malang. The research design was cross-sectional in 52 female models aged 18–25 years who were selected by simple random sampling. The data of fad diets used in the questionnaire, nutritional status data using the calculation of the last body weight and height, and nutritional adequacy were measured using 2 × 24 hour food recall. Data analysis used the chi-square test. The results of this research showed that most respondents implement fad diets (69%), had negative body image (62%), had a skinny at high level (22%), skinny at mild level (44%), and normal (33%) of nutritional status, and had inadequate nutritional adequacy (77%). There was a significant ( p = 0.023 ) correlation between fad diets and nutritional adequacy (r = 0.369), and in addition, there was a significant correlation ( p = 0.041 ) between nutritional status and nutritional adequacy (r = 0.35). It is concluded that the female models who implemented fad diets and nutritional status below normal tended to not have adequate levels of nutritional adequacy because of improper food selection and psychological factors. Female models are expected to be able to conduct weight loss with the assistance of a nutritionist or in accordance with balanced nutrition guidelines.

AbstrakStatus gizi adalah kondisi fisiologis tubuh terkait konsumsi makanan dan penggunaan zat gizi oleh tubuh. Hingga sekarang, masalah gizi masih umum terjadi terutama di negara berkembang. Status gizi pada siswa sekolah dasar penting karena dapat mempengaruhi kognitif dan capaian pembelajaran siswa. Salah satu akar masalah gizi adalah kemiskinan yang terkait dengan sosiodemografi yang meliputi status sosial dan ekonomi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis hubungan karakteristik sosiodemografi dan status gizi siswa sekolah dasar di Desa Wokam dan Desa Karangguli, Kabupaten Kepualaun Aru, Maluku. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan cross-sectional dan jenis penelitian ini adalah analitik observasional. Penilaian status gizi menggunakan grafik berat badan terhadap tinggi badan dengan kriteria Waterlow. Data mengenai sosiodemografi dikumpulkan dengan wawancara. Hubungan antara karakteristik sosiodemografi dan status gizi dinilai dengan uji statistik chi-square. Dari 106 sampel, 73 siswa (68,9%) memiliki status gizi normal dan 33 siswa (31,1%) memiliki status gizi kurang. Uji statistik tidak menunjukkan hubungan yang signifikan antara karakteristik sosiodemografi dan status gizi di Desa Wokam dan Karangguli, Kabupaten Kepulauan Aru. Kata kunci  : hubungan, siswa sekolah dasar, sosiodemografi, status gizi AbstractNutritional status is a physiological condition of the body related to food consumption and requirements of the body. Until now, malnutrition is a common problem in developing countries. Nutritional status in school age children is important because it can affect cognitive ability and student achievement. One of the root problems of malnutrition is poverty which is related to sociodemographic including social and economic status. The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between sociodemographic characteristics and nutritional status in elementary school children in Wokam and Karangguli Village, Aru Islands Regency, Maluku. This study used cross-sectional study design and the type of this study is analytical observational. Nutritional status was assessed using weight to stature growth chart with Waterlow criteria. Data about sociodemographic were collected by interview. Correlation between sociodemographic characteristics and nutritional status were analyzed using chi-square test. From 106 samples, 73 students (68,9%) have normal nutritional status and 33 students (31,1%) were wasted. No significant correlation was found between sociodemographic characteristics and nutritional status in Wokam and Karangguli Village, Aru Islands Regency. Keywords:     correlation, elementary school students, nutritional status, sociodemographic
