AbstractMorphometric characters and organ indices were analyzed in Charybdis affinis collected at different seasons from the Zhujiang estuary, China. The crab is heterochelous, with pronounced right handedness in both sexes. There is a marked sexual difference in relative growth of the cheliped. The female abdomen increases in size at puberty, which is also accompanied by a reduced allometric growth rate. Analysis of gonad development gave the estimate of 50% gonadal maturity at 42 and 36 mm carapace width for females and males, respectively. The hepatosomatic index of female crabs is inversely related to the gonadosomatic index indicating the role of the hepatopancreas in storage of nutrients necessary for ovarian development in the reproductive season.

Studies on identification of species, fecundity and development stages of blue crab, (Callinectes amnicola) were investigated at the Cross River Estuary between the months of December, 2018 and May, 2019. The parameters used for the study were gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices, egg diameter and counts. All measurements followed standard procedures. Gonadosomatic index was at its peak in December (88.9) and April (83.3). This coincided with the peak in egg size suggesting that spawning occurred twice within the period. The low values of hepatosomatic index around December (1.20) and April (0.45) added to confirm the spawning in these months. The species spawns at a mean egg size of 17.55mm. The dimension of crabs examined were in the following range: carapace length 40.0 to 70.0mm, carapace width, 5.0 to 60mm and body weight 40.0 to 140.0g. The relationship between fecundity and weight of crab was  significant (r = 0.295: p<0.05), indicating positive correlation. Absolute fecundity of the species ranged between 1,375 and 225,132 eggs. The smallest crab with egg had a carapace width of 39.5mm and weight of 46.9g. Spawning at this size seems to be a strategy adopted by the species to cope with exploitation pressure. The result of this study revealed that C. amnicola had a high reproductive potentials. Hence, adequate regulation is required to enhance sustainability of the species in the Cross River Estuary.

Sexual maturity of the spider crab Libinia ferreirae was assessed for each sex, based on body dimensions and observations of gonad condition. A total of 346 crabs were analysed, of which 68% were females. Immature and adult individuals were recognized based on their allometric growth and gonad development. Abdomen width (AW) vs carapace width (CW) and propodus length (PL) vs CW were the relationships that best separated allometric groups of females and males, respectively. For females, gonad and allometric morphological maturity were, respectively, 38.77 and 39.43 mm of CW, which is close to the carapace size of the smallest ovigerous female (38.08 mm). For males, gonad maturity was 34.86 mm of CW and three allometric phases were observed: immature (IM♂), adolescent (AD♂) and adult morphometrically mature (MM♂). The IM♂ phase showed lower values of CW and PL than the AD♂ phase, without spermatophores inside the vas deferens; the AD♂ phase exhibited higher CW values than IM♂, but lower CW and PL values than the MM♂ phase, and the presence of spermatophores in the vas deferens; the MM♂ phase had higher values of CW and PL than the AD♂ phase and spermatophores in the vas deferens. Therefore, females showed synchronic morphometric, gonadal and functional maturity, while in males, gonadal maturity was attained before morphometric maturity, which probably could be a reproductive strategy for this species.

Abstract Catfish are an important component of demersal fisheries in the Persian Gulf. This study describes reproductive aspects in the four common species of catfish, namely Netuma thalassina (Rüppell, 1837), Netuma bilineata (Valenciennes, 1840), Plicofollis dussumieri (Valenciennes, 1840), and Plicofollis layardi (Günther, 1866) collected from coastal areas of the Persian Gulf during spring and winter 2017. A total of 495 fishes were collected, including 151 N. thalassina, 12 N. bilineata, 212 P. dussumieri, and 120 P. layardi. The four species showed significant differences in total length as a measure of body size. Total length of these four species also differed significantly between the four seasons and between the sexes. Three species, i.e., N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi showed an overall female-biased sex ratio, while the sex ratio of N. bilineata did not differ from the expected equal proportions. The patterns of gonad development, gonadosomatic index, and hepatosomatic index of the four species showed that the breeding season of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, and P. layardi was probably during winter. N. bilineata showed a different pattern; its breeding season is therefore expected to be spring. The size at first maturity of N. thalassina, P. dussumieri, N. bilineata, and P. layardi, was 44.99, 30.55, 29.60, and 27.01 cm, respectively. This study provides essential information for correct management during the reproductive cycle to maintain a healthy stock of these fishes.

Infestation of Sacculina beauforti on an aquaculture species, mud crab Scylla olivacea is alarming due to its high prevalence and the extreme morphological changes in hosts. To further understand its pathological effect on growth and reproduction of S. olivacea, gonadal and hepatopancreatic histological changes of infected individuals were compared with healthy individuals. Also, the histological characteristics of S. beauforti's mature externa was described. Hepatopancreases of infected individuals were loosely packed and rootlets were observed in the intertubular spaces. Although hepatopancreatic tubule count was significantly lower, tubule diameters were unaffected. Gonads, however, were severely affected. No germ cells were found in the infected testes (except for remnants of spermatozoa), indicating the arrest of spermatogenesis. Rootlets were also present in testes of infected individuals. Ovarian tissues of infected females were severely damaged with no rigid cell structures. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of infected males and females were lower, but the hepatosomatic index (HSI) were higher than their healthy counterparts. No significant differences in GSI and HSI values were observed among infected males and females. Multiple regression analysis revealed that carapace width, GSI and HSI are statistically important for the prediction of infection status. Given the high prevalence of S. beauforti infection and its disruptive effects on the morphology and internal physiology of S. olivacea, this study, albeit fundamental and incomprehensive, highlights to farmers and researchers the emergence of a castrating parasite and the urgency for the development of preventive measures and treatments for this disease in an economically important aquaculture species.

In this study, gonadal maturity stage, biological indexes, proximate gonad composition and sex ratio proportion were determined. A total of 30 wild spotted sand bass were monthly obtained from March 2017 to February 2018. Organisms were measured, weighted and dissected in order to obtain the condition factor (K), hepatosomatic index (IHS) and gonadosomatic index (IGS). A small portion of gonad was preserved to perform the histological procedure, and stained with Harris´ hematoxilineosin technique. The results indicate that somatic indexes were significantly affected (P<0.05) in terms of IHS and IGS. Histological analysis showed the presence of ripe males in April and from October to November, and for females, the presence of developed organisms was observed in April and from October to December. Additionally, the presence of transitional organisms from female to male was observed. The proximate analysis showed the maximum crude fat value in April, which coincides with the lowest moisture value. Sex proportion showed a significant male dominance. These data provide valuable information for the development of protection programs to encourage a sustainable fishery of the species.

Portunus pelagicus a commercially important crab species found in Chilika lagoon constitutes about 20% of the total crab production. The carapace width (CW) ranges from 4.5–10.5 cm in both the sexes during the study period. The maximum abundance of male was at 6.6 to 7.5 cm CW whereas the females predominate from 6.6 to 9.5 cm CW. The relationship between carapace length (CL) and CW is linear in both sexes which indicates isometric growth. However, the relationship between CL, CW with total body weight (TW) is exponential. The food habit from gut content analysis shows that the species is highly carnivorous and the main food items include prawn carapace and appendages (27.58%), molluscan remaining (21.55%), fish bone (7.75%), seagrass (1.72%), unidentified materials (4.31%) and the mixed food (37.06%). The feeding index was found highest (80.95%) in February whereas it is lowest (60.9%) in June. The mature females are observed from May to July with a peak in July in the lagoon. The highest gonadosomatic index is found in July with an average CW of 10.5 cm. No berried females are found in the study period, which indicates that it did not spawn inside the lagoon and migrates to the sea during the rainy season.

An experiment was designed to study the effects of curcumin and thyroxine hormone supplementation in the diet to improve the reproductive performance of catfish broodstock by improving egg quality that eventually increases the production of seedlings. Catfish used in this experiment were supplemented with curcumin and thyroxine hormone through their feeds for 12 weeks. The results showed that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the hepatosomatic index (HSI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), percentage of gonad maturity, total cholesterol concentration in the spawned eggs, high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration in the spawned eggs, fertilization rate of spawned eggs, and hatching rate of fertilized eggs.  However, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the concentration of vitellogenin in the spawned eggs, egg diameter of the spawned eggs, and the triglycerides contents of spawned eggs. It was concluded that curcumin and thyroxine supplementations of African catfish increased vitellogenin concentrations and diameters of spawned eggs that have great potential to improve the reproductive performance.

Life histories of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) from the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to Georges Bank differ significantly through time and space. Within the Southern Gulf, fecundity per unit body mass differed by more than 40% over short (2 years) and long (42–45 years) periods of time. Significant variation in size-specific fecundity is also evident among populations: Southern Gulf cod produce almost 30% more eggs per unit body mass than those on Georges Bank, whereas fecundity of Scotian Shelf cod is almost half that of cod in Sydney Bight. Compared with those on Georges Bank, Southern Gulf cod life histories are characterized by high fecundity, late maturity, high gonadosomatic index, and large eggs. Relative to the influence of body size, neither temporal nor spatial differences in fecundity can be attributed to physiological condition, as reflected by liver weight, hepatosomatic index, and Fulton's K. Delayed maturity and higher reproductive allotment among Southern Gulf cod can be explained as selection responses to slower growth, higher prereproductive mortality, and fewer lifetime reproductive events. Patterns of covariation in heritable, fitness-related traits suggest the existence of adaptive variation and evolutionarily significant units at spatial scales considerably smaller than the species range in the Northwest Atlantic.
