Using a digital methods analysis, the following article conducts a cross-platform study of the emergent “Zoombombing” phenomenon alongside COVID-19 and the concomitant on-lining of professional and public life. This empirical study seeks to provide further insight to media frames characterizing Zoombombing at the outbreak of the pandemic, providing further insight into Zoombombing as a practice, how related actions act as an extension of longer histories and practices of online harassment, and the role that various platforms play in the phenomenon’s unfolding. By interrogating these points of departure, our study sheds light not only on Zoombombing as a cultural practice, but also how these acts manifest within and across a range of Internet platforms.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to research the word class adjective in one sequence of the ESP: Business English, more precisely English business magazines online. It is an empirical study on the corpus taken from a variety of business magazines online. The empirical analysis allows a comprehensive insight into the word class adjective in this variety of Business English and makes its contribution to English syntax, semantics and word formation. The syntactic part analyses the adjective position in the sentence. The semantic part of the study identifies the most common adjectives that appear in English business magazines online. Most of the analysis is devoted to the word formation of the adjectives found in the corpus. The corpus is analysed in such a way that it enables its division into compounds, derivatives and conversions. The results obtained in this way will give a comprehensive picture of the word class adjective in this type of Business English and can act as a starting point for further research of the word class adjective.

We provide a framework of analysis for Chinese ways of learning that extends beyond the individual level. The theoretical framework focuses on Confucian principles of <i>xiào</i> (孝, filial piety), <i>guăn</i> (管, to govern), and <i>dào dé guān</i> (道德觀, virtues), which leads us to argue that directive guidance as a cultural practice nourishes Chinese-heritage children’s learning as early as in infancy. To illustrate how directive guidance occurs in action for infants, we present an empirical study that examined the interaction of mother-infant dyads in Taipei, Taiwan, when they played with a challenging toy. The dyads co-enacted directive guidance more frequently than their European-American counterparts in the USA – through hand holding, intervening, and collaboration – while infants actively participate in the practice. We discuss the early development of strengths for learning that is fostered through culturally meaningful practices recurrent in parent-infant interaction.

ABSTRACTThe Deh Cho Dene have been negotiating territorial land since early European settlement. This paper argues that the changing needs of Deh Cho Dene society has changed their concept of property and this transformation has evolved with a responsibility to conserve cultural practice and ecological balance in Deh Cho Dene territorial lands. The article considers how the changing need of European society addresses property and ownership in the context of basic human rights and consumer interests. It uses the theories of Macpherson, Locke, and Marx to construct a model to understand the property relations that exist in the Deh Cho Dene region. Accordingly, the paper addresses oral narratives to give historical insight into the relations between neighbouring tribal groups and their understanding of territorial boundaries. An account of present day negotiations highlights the various initiatives taken to protect traditional interests and uphold historical claim to the territory. The negotiation of joint ventures and property ownership has evolved with concerns over ecological sustainability and the protection of a subsistence lifestyle, which is critical for the social and economic interests of Deh Cho Dene culture, and is closely connected to the land.

Abstract Persuasion success is often related to hard-to-measure characteristics, such as the way the persuader speaks. To examine how vocal tones impact persuasion in an online appeal, this research measures persuaders’ vocal tones in Kickstarter video pitches using novel audio mining technology. Connecting vocal tone dimensions with real-world funding outcomes offers insight into the impact of vocal tones on receivers’ actions. The core hypothesis of this paper is that a successful persuasion attempt is associated with vocal tones denoting (1) focus, (2) low stress, and (3) stable emotions. These three vocal tone dimensions—which are in line with the stereotype content model—matter because they allow receivers to make inferences about a persuader’s competence. The hypotheses are tested with a large-scale empirical study using Kickstarter data, which is then replicated in a different category. In addition, two controlled experiments provide evidence that perceptions of competence mediate the impact of the three vocal tones on persuasion attempt success. The results identify key indicators of persuasion attempt success and suggest a greater role for audio mining in academic consumer research.

The article under consideration is aimed at cross-cultural quantified associative mapping of the universal concept “happiness” and shaping the hierarchy of its cornerstone axiological constituents as perceived by Russian, French and English linguosocieties within the framework of the global pandemic reality. “Happiness” has been subject to transdisciplinary investigation since ancient times due to its dynamic character and ambiguity. The concept of “happiness”, although psychologically ingrained and biologically predetermined, can change significantly based on different outer and inner factors. It demonstrates an undeniable potential for multiple perceptions, various patterns of ethnic-specific and highly personalized verbalization, requiring unification and analysis of different sociocultural stimuli that trigger off this or that row of associations. The authors provide keen insight into the semantics of the concept and its static lexicographic axiological paradigm in the Russian, French and English languages. Three associative surveys were carried out through Google-forms to estimate the degree at which the “static projection” of “happiness” is relevant nowadays in pandemic-shaken societies as well as collect free associations, manually contrast the data and establish parallels and peculiarities within up-to-date Russian, French and English (American) visions of “happiness”. The survey results testify to the fact that “health”, “family”, “peace” and “freedom” are universally recognized constituents of “happiness” while certain elements prove to be ethnic-specific and arise due to concrete social circumstances.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss why social media frames may exert substantial influence on the image of organisations and even trigger organisational crises. Design/methodology/approach – The study applies the theoretical approaches of crisis, framing and stakeholder theory to examine social media constructions of organisational behaviour. A recent case from the Danish restaurant industry exemplifies the structuring of social media frames and their impact on organisational image. Findings – The results of the study confirm the findings of previous studies but with the crucial addition that the power of social media frames is closely connected to their drawing on basic cultural and social beliefs that unite stakeholders across potentially different interests and identities. Research limitations/implications – The study is qualitative and applies a small dataset. To confirm the findings, further studies need to be conducted. Social implications – This paper sheds light on an issue which continues to be highly relevant for organisations. By gaining insight into the conceptual nature of frames and stakeholder motivations, which guide social-media entries, they may be better equipped for meeting the demands of the public and thus for preventing crises. Originality/value – This is a field of research that continues to develop concurrently with the development and spread of social media. By analysing in detail how frames are constructed, the study contributes to research in the field.

This chapter addresses two major questions in regard to the critical reception of the career and films of Preston Sturges. The first question is how Sturges’s public persona as a “madcap” personality working in the Hollywood studio system created a master narrative that both informed and influenced the critical reception of his films and thus proved to be a precursor to what would come to be identified as “auteur” criticism. This leads to a second question: how did the theme of public spectacle in both Sturges’s personal/professional life and in his films that take a satirical and/or cynical view of public figures, influence critical debates in regard to the director as “auteur,” as well as inciting theoretical debates regarding the final purpose and/or ideological effect of his comedies as satire and/or irony reflecting cynicism and/or nihilism? Finally, the chapter explores how a study of the ambivalence that marks the history of critical writing on both Sturges’s life and his films provides an insight into the cultural practice of film criticism itself. To that end, the chapter gives particular attention to the critical debates provoked by three films, The Great McGinty, Sullivan’s Travels, and Hail the Conquering Hero.

Diese Studie beschäftigt sich mit einer Analyse der mentalen Strukturen von Mitarbeitenden in Bezug auf die gewünschten Ansprüche an die Ausstattung und Einrichtung der Büroumgebung und deren zugrunde liegenden Werte. Um ein tiefer gehendes, grundlegendes Verständnis der Zusammenhänge zu gewinnen, wird auf die Laddering-Technik zurückgegriffen. Als Studienergebnis ist festzuhalten, dass sich Angestellte ein ergonomisches Arbeitsumfeld, gute Licht- und Luftverhältnisse, genügend Platz sowie eine moderne Hardware wünschen. Das Wertkonstrukt der Mitarbeitenden ist eher an den eigenen Interessen orientiert als an denen des Unternehmens. Abschliessend werden Empfehlungen für das Management zur Optimierung des Büroumfeldes und Limitationen des Forschungsansatzes aufgezeigt. This study aims to develop a deeper understanding of the expectations regarding workplace conditions that employees desire and to uncover the constructs that underlie these prospects in order to reveal the primary benefits that members of staffseek. An empirical study using the laddering techniquegives a valuable first insight into the desired expectations. The study results indicate that employees want an ergonomic workplace, good indoor air quality and lighting, enough space and modern hardware. Underlying employee’s values are oriented less towards the interests of the enterprise than towards the personal interests of the employees. AbstractThis study aims to investigateempirically whether there is any significant association between seven commercial bank-specific attributes (i.e. age of bank, size of bank, bank liquidity position, profitability, government ownership, foreign ownership, and listing status) and the extent of voluntary disclosure in the annual reports. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model is used to test the association between bank attributes and voluntary disclosure. The results of regression analysis indicate that banks size and listing status are significantly associated with the level of voluntary information disclosures. The findings also revealed the extent of voluntary disclosure in annual reports is notsignificantly influenced by other bank’s attributes.The current empirical study contributes to that investigation in the context of banking companies andprovides new insight into determinants of voluntary disclosure in the annual reports of listed and unlisted commercial banks.Keywords: Commercial Bank Attributes; Voluntary Disclosure;Annual reports; Libya

What does management in public administration look like from the point of view of executives? What needs to be considered for successful management? Fundamental theories of management science as well as important management practice from the perspective of economics are explained and references to public administration become clear. A comprehensive empirical study by means of expert interviews helps to provide a well-founded and in-depth insight into the actual management practice of public administration. The empirical study presents room for improvement in applied public administration management.
