A divergence exists between registered nurses’ (RNs’) intention to document together with the patient and their actual documentation practice; a practice that also diverges from official intentions of patient participation. This study aimed to explore and describe RNs’ reflected experiences on patient participation in nursing documentation. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted based on three focus groups with 14 registered nurses from an acute medical ward. Content analysis and conversational analysis were performed. The reporting adhered to the COREQ checklist. The findings showed that nurses made little mention of patient participation in nursing documentation due to challenges in meeting both the patients’ expected needs and nurses’ needs. However, patient participation was important for time accurate and summative nursing documentation. This study adds to a critical debate on patient participation and contributes to a practice-based understanding of the challenges that registered nurses experience concerning patient participation in nursing documentation.

Abstract Background The exponential spread of COVID-19 has caused a huge threat to public health worldwide. Providing care for patients with COVID-19 is a stressful experience for ICU nurses, which can affect their protective reactions. The present study was conducted to explore the protective reactions of ICU nurses providing care for patients with COVID-19. Methods This qualitative descriptive study was conducted to discover the protective reactions of nurses providing care for patients with COVID-19. A total of 14 ICU nurses were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected using individual semi-structured face-to-face interviews. All interviews were recorded, and then codes and themes were extracted using content analysis method. Finding Seventeen subcategories, six categories and two themes were extracted from the analysis of data. These themes include “Unbalanced self-protective reactions” and “Responsible self-protective reactions”. Conclusion During the COVID-19 epidemic and crisis, ICU nurses exhibit different self-protective reactions when providing care for patients with COVID-19, which include unbalanced and responsible reactions. Nursing managers can mitigate these unbalanced reactions by identifying them and their roots. Identifying the protective reactions of ICU nurses in providing care for patients with COVID-19 could assist in developing the necessary interventions to promote positive reactions and reduce unbalanced reactions by finding their root causes.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to describe registered nurses’ (RNs) experiences of providing respiratory care in relation to hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP), specifically among patients with acute stroke being cared for at in-patient stroke units. Background One of the most common and serious respiratory complications associated with acute stroke is HAP. Respiratory care is among the fundamentals of patient care, and thus competency in this field is expected as part of nursing training. However, there is a paucity of literature detailing RNs’ experiences with respiratory care in relation to HAP, specifically among patients with acute stroke, in the context of stroke units. As such, there is a need to expand the knowledge base relating to respiratory care focusing on HAP, to assist with evidence-based nursing. Design A qualitative descriptive study. Method Eleven RNs working in four different acute stroke units in Southern Sweden participated in the current study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the transcribed interviews were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results Three overarching categories were identified: (1), awareness of risk assessments and risk factors for HAP (2) targeting HAP through multiple nursing care actions, and (3) challenges in providing respiratory care to patients in risk of HAP. These reflected the similarities and differences in the experiences that RNs had with providing respiratory care in relation to HAP among in-patients with acute stroke. Conclusions The findings from this study suggest that the RNs experience organisational challenges in providing respiratory care for HAP among patients with acute stroke. Respiratory care plays a vital role in the identification and prevention of HAP, but our findings imply that RNs’ knowledge needs to be improved, the fundamentals of nursing care need to be prioritised, and evidence-based guidelines must be implemented. RNs would also benefit from further education and support, in order to lead point-of-care nursing in multidisciplinary stroke teams.

Patients with mental illness are exposed and experience themselves as not being taken seriously in emergency care. Registered nurses need to assess patients with mental illness from a holistic perspective comprising both a physical and an existential dimension. The aim of the study was to describe registered nurses’ (RNs) experiences of assessing patients with mental illness in emergency care. Twenty-eight RNs in prehospital and in-hospital emergency care were individually interviewed. The interviews were analysed descriptively. The design followed the COREQ-checklist. One main theme ‘A conditional patient assessment’ and two themes; ‘A challenged professional role’ and ‘A limited openness for the patient’, comprising in turn four sub-themes emerged. Although the RNs showed willingness to understand the mental illness aspects of their patients, they were insufficient in their assessments. This implies the importance of developing emergency care RNs’ competence, knowledge and self-confidence in assessments and care of patients with mental illness.

BackgroundStrategies have been developed for use in primary care to identify patients at risk of declining health and dying, yet little is known about the perceptions of doing so or the broader implications and impacts.AimTo explore the acceptability and implications of using a primary care-based electronic medical record algorithm to help providers identify patients in their practice at risk of declining health and dying.Design and settingQualitative descriptive study in Ontario and Nova Scotia, Canada.MethodSix focus groups were conducted, supplemented by one-on-one interviews, with 29 healthcare providers, managers, and policymakers in primary care, palliative care, and geriatric care. Participants were purposively sampled to achieve maximal variation. Data were analysed using a constant comparative approach.ResultsSix themes were prevalent across the dataset: early identification is aligned with the values, aims, and positioning of primary care; providers have concerns about what to do after identification; how we communicate about the end of life requires change; early identification and subsequent conversations require an integrated team approach; for patients, early identification will have implications beyond medical care; and a public health approach is needed to optimise early identification and its impact.ConclusionStakeholders were much more concerned with how primary care providers would navigate the post-identification period than with early identification itself. Implications of early identification include the need for a team-based approach to identification and to engage broader communities to ensure people live and die well post-identification.

As part of the Health Care Interaction project that was rolled out in western Sweden, home health nurses (HHNs) were called on as first responders to provide emergency treatment to patients, while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Health Care Interaction project in terms of the training and preparation of HHNs and the competencies that the nurses felt they needed to develop to feel confident in these assignments. In this qualitative descriptive study, 11 home health nurses from six municipalities that implemented the project were interviewed, and the data were analysed using content analysis. The COREQ guidelines were followed in the reporting of this study. The findings show that some municipalities did not have a training or preparation course in place, and guided the HHNs to refer to self-education material. The HHNs emphasised the importance of continuously updating their knowledge and skills through regular training. Further, feedback and reflection were considered important as reinforcement of learning.

For children, musical education is considered as an essential need since it supports psychomotor development and provides children with an environment, where they can freely express themselves. Classical guitar is a polyphonic instrument that is widely used in musical education and, as with other instruments, it necessitates a certain level of learning discipline. The objective of the present study is to examine the « Je deviens guitariste Vol.1 » guitar method developed by Thierry Tisserand, being a composer and guitarist and affected by jazz, bossa nova, and other music genres, for children, who have no solfeggio knowledge and are having the first guitar education from scratch, and to reveal on which aspects of early-age guitar education this method has effects. The present research is a descriptive study providing a situation assessment and is based on general survey model. This qualitative study uses various document and content analysis methods. The data were obtained by analyzing this method’s contributions to the educational process and by reviewing the literature. Based on the findings obtained as a result of this research, how contributions that this method could offer for resolving the possible problems that might be observed in early-age guitar education are discussed and suggestions are provided for educator and method.
