Low calcium intake, poor calcium absorption, excessive calcium losses, or some combination of these factors contribute to calcium deficiency diseases. Calcium insufficiency is associated with osteoporosis, hypertension and colon cancer among other diseases. For individuals who do not have access to milk and dairy products, do not tolerate them, or prefer not to consume them, plants may be  alternative sources of calcium. However, calcium bioavailability may be low in plant foods because calcium forms complexes with oxalates, phytate and other competing minerals. The objective of this study was to compare the calcium content, digestibility and bioaccessibility in the leaves of spinach (Spinacia oleracea), sweet potato (Ipomea batatas), and drumstick tree (Moringa oleifera). Calcium content was analyzed in dry leaf powder by atomic absorption, followed by a two-stage in vitro digestion and dialysis against a mock serum solution to determine calcium digestibility and bioaccessibility. Moringa oleifera had higher calcium content than spinach and sweet potato leaves: 1.54±0.11% of dry matter for three Moringa samples (two African and one from India), and 0.99±0.001 and 1.06±0.001, respectively, in spinach and sweet potato leaves. The mean in vitro calcium digestibility was 1.62±0.08% in spinach, 3.4±0.68% in sweet potato leaves and 33.7±9.6% for Moringa. A dialysis system was designed to model bioaccessibility of calcium, revealing that bioaccessible calcium in sweet potato leaves was a non-significant 1.4 times higher and in Moringa was 9.2 to 19.4 times higher than in spinach. Therefore, the calcium contained in Moringa leaves does not appear to be associated with poorly bioavailable complexes such as oxalate. We confirmed previous reports that bioaccessibility of the calcium is low in spinach. These findings imply that increased utilization of Ipomea batatas and Moringa oleifera leaves might increase calcium intake in people in tropical and warm temperate regions where these plants grow, or these plants might become a valuable export crop.

Five native grasses and one sedge of the Stipa-Bouteloua prairie, three introduced grasses collected at five stages of growth, and four shrubby species collected at three stages of growth were analyzed for proximate chemical constituents.The amounts of phosphorus and digestible and crude protein of all species decreased with maturity, while the cellulose increased. Introduced grasses generally contained more crude protein than native grasses. Shrubby species were higher in crude protein and phosphorus than native grasses. No consistent trend was observed in relative total ash and calcium content at progressive stages of development. The estimated nutritive value index was high for all grasses and low for two Artemisia species. The seasonal declines in crude protein and phosphorus suggest that protein and phosphorus supplements are desirable for range cattle during the fall, winter, and early spring.

AbstractDried powder from Moringa oleifera L. leaves (MOLP) could be considered a promising naturally gluten-free (GF) ingredient to be added in the formulation of GF food products aiming to improve the overall nutritional characteristics. In this work, GF biscuits were formulated by replacing a commercial GF flour mix with 0, 5, 10, and 15 g/100 g of MOLP. Chemical composition, physical and textural characteristics, starch pasting properties, and the in vitro starch digestibility were considered. Adding MOLP increased the amount of protein and total dietary fibre. Even at the lowest MOLP-substitution level, the biscuits had a total dietary fibre content > 6 g/100 g dry matter. Differences in the chemical composition might account for differences in starch properties in terms of pasting behaviour and in vitro digestibility. Using MOLP decreased the in vitro starch hydrolysis index of biscuits, the lowest value (69.3) obtained at the greatest MOLP inclusion level. In addition, an increase in the resistant starch content was reported, passing from 1.1 to 2.7 g/100 g dry matter for GF biscuits containing 0 to 15 g/100 g of MOLP. Colour, spread ratio, and hardness were affected by MOLP inclusion. Biscuits containing 15 g/100 g of MOLP were characterized by the highest hardness value (41.9 N). Substitution level of 10 g/100 g should be considered the threshold level for obtaining a product with similar spread ratio than the control.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji pengaruh pemberian kombinasi herbal dengan mineral zink dalam ransum broiler yang diinfeksi Escherichia coli (E. coli). Dua ratus ekor d.o.c (day old chick) dibagi secara acak ke dalam lima perlakuan, masing-masing perlakuan diulang empat kali sehingga terdapat 20 unit percobaan, setiap unit percobaan terdiri dari 10 ekor d.o.c. Anak ayam percobaan dipelihara selama 35 hari. Ransum perlakuan terdiri dari R1 = Pakan basal/ ayamsehat (kontrolnegatif); R2 = Pakan basal/ ayamdiinfeksiE.coli (kontrolpositif); R3= Pakan basal + serbukkunyit 1.5% + ZnO 180 ppm/ ayamdiinfeksiE.coli; R4 = Pakan basal + serbukbawangputih 2.5% + ZnO 180 ppm/ ayamdiinfeksiE.coli; R5 = Pakan basal + antibiotik/ ayamdiinfeksiE.coli.Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap. Peubah yang diamati konsumsi ransum, pertambahan bobot badan, dan konversi ransum. Two hundred d.o.c unsexed were devided into five treatments and four replications, with ten chicks in each replicates. The treatments were R1 (basal diet as a negative control/ healhty chickens), R2 (basal diet as a positive control/ Escherichia coli challenged), R3 (basal diet +1.5% turmeric powder + ZnO 180 ppm/ Escherichia coli challenged), R4 (basal diet + 2.5% garlic powder + ZnO 180 ppm/ Escherichia coli challenged), and R5 (basal diet + antibiotic/ Escherichia coli challenged). Data were collected during 35 days, diet and water were offered ad libitum. The results of this research indicated that chickens fed basal diet + 1.5% turmeric powder + ZnO 180 ppm/ challenged Escherichia coli and chickens fed basal diet + 2.5% garlic powder +ZnO 180 ppm/ challenged Escherichia coli showed performances better than control .Keywords: Sweet potato leaves, Body weight, Consumtion ration, Convertion ration, Broiler

AbstractThe current study was conducted to evaluate the component composition, anti-nutritional factors, in vitro gas production (GP) and methane (CH4) production profiles of fruit by-products (pineapple pulp, mango seed kernels, banana and papaya peel, Moringa stenopetala and Moringa oleifera seeds) and leaves of root crops (sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas], cassava [Manihot esculenta], yam [Dioscorea abyssinica], enset [Ensete ventricosum] and samma [Urtica simensis]). Root crop leaves had high crude protein (CP) ranging from 211 to 318 g/kg dry matter (DM) in yam and samma, respectively. M. stenopetala seeds contained the highest CP (450 g/kg DM). Samma leaves were rich in calcium (58.6 g/kg DM) and iron (1186 mg/kg DM). Leaves of root crops had similar concentrations of essential amino acids with appreciable values. Total phenols were highest in mango seed kernels (158 g/kg DM). The asymptotic GP at 96 h incubation of pineapple pulp, papaya and banana peel was 397, 358 and 279 ml/g DM, respectively, and differed significantly from each other. Sweet potato and yam leaves produced 238 and 225 ml/g DM GP, respectively, being significantly higher than those of other root crops. CH4 production was significantly lowest in Moringa seeds, mango seed kernels and sweet potato leaves. In conclusion, fruit by-products have the potential as energy sources and root crop leaves as protein supplements for ruminant and non-ruminant animals. Moringa seeds, mango seed kernels and sweet potato leaves were identified as potential candidates in mitigating CH4 emissions in tropical livestock with animal-based experiments recommended to validate the in vitro findings.

The objective of this research was  to obtain suitable concentration of sucrose and agar in the sweet potato (Ipomea batatas (L) Lam) in vitro preservation medium, in order to make plant grow slowly and healthy. Experiment was done in Molecular Biologi Laboratory of PAU IPB. The experiment was arranged in factorial complete random design, using sweet potato var. Sukuh in order to know the effect of sucrose (40,50,60,70 and 80 g l-1) and agar (7 and 8 g l-1) which were added 1 g l-1 hyponex fertilizer 20-20-20. The experiment was replicated four times. Data were analyzed parametrically and non-parametrically. The result of these experiments showed the suitable conservation media was 1 g l-1 hyponex 20-20-20 + 60 g l-1sucrose + 7 g l-1 agar. Threfore, the media composition MS could produce high green inter nodes number, high root number and more than two green leaf number. This experiment also showed that MS media could be replaced by a cheaper and easily found conservation medium.

In aquaculture, fish health problems are often encountered which can lead to failure in cultivation activities. One of the efforts to overcome the problem of disease in cultivation is done by providing immunostimulants. Sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas) are plants that have a short harvest period, cheap and rich in vitamins and antioxidants so that it can be used as a source of immunstimulants. This research was conducted to determine the effect of adding sweet potato leaves (Ipomea batats) to tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) feed on total leukocytes, phagocytic activity, hematocrit, and survival rate. The study was conducted by experimental method using a completely randomized design, with 4 treatment doses of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) used were 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%, which were formulated in fish feed and each treatment was repeated 3 times.. The results showed that giving 10% of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas) leaves in feed had a significant effect on the non-specific immune system of tilapia, which could increase the highest total leukocyte value by 6600 mm3 but did not have a significant effect on the phagocytosis index. 96.3%, 31% hematocrit with 93% survival.

The aim of this study was to identify the most adequate level of calcium oxide (CaO) in the treatment of sugar cane by evaluating the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of dry matter. The sugar cane was homogenized with CaO levels 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5%, in natura matter, for 24 hours. The dry matter and mineral matter increased, while the organic matter of the sugar cane decreased (P <0.05) linearly as a result of the CaO levels. The CaO had no effect on the levels of crude protein and ether extract. The phosphorus concentration remained unchanged, but there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the calcium content. The contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and cellulose decreased linearly with the levels of CaO. The average levels of indigestible dry matter and indigestible neutral detergent fiber significantly decreased with increasing levels of CaO. The results showed that the in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was different between fresh sugar cane and sugar cane with added levels of CaO from 1.5%. The IVDMD and nutritional value of the sugar cane was improved by adding 1.5% CaO based on fresh content.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is one of the most important food crops worldwide and its leaves provide a dietary source of nutrients and various bioactive compounds. These constituents of sweet potato leaves (SPL) vary among varieties and play important roles in treating and preventing various diseases. Recently, more attentions in health-promoting benefits have led to several in vitro and in vivo investigations, as well as the identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in SPL. Among them, many new compounds have been reported as the first identified compounds from SPL with their dominant bioactivities. This review summarizes the current knowledge of the bioactive compositions of SPL and their health benefits. Since SPL serve as a potential source of micronutrients and functional compounds, they can be further developed as a sustainable crop for food and medicinal industries.
