Tritium Organic Compounds in the Environment and Human Organism

Purpose: To evaluate the ratio of tritium oxide and tritium organic compounds in the environment and in the body in order to justify the graded approach when calculating the dose for the personnel working in the presence of tritium and its compounds in the air of the working area. Material and methods: The study covered the forms of tritium (HTO and OBT) in water, air and bodies of the personnel working under conditions of the presence of tritium and its compounds in the air of the working area. Samples of water, air and biological assays (urine) of the personnel were collected for the study. Sample preparation of the collected material was carried out according to the approved methods certified by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “VNIIFTRI”. The liquid scintillation alpha-beta spectrometer Tri-Carb 3180TR/SL was used when estimating tritium concentrations in the preformed samples. Results: It has been established that in the environment (water and air) and under the industrial conditions (air of the working area), tritium is to a greater extent in the form of OBT, which determines its predominant intake into the body of the personnel in the form of OBT. The ratio of tritium forms in biological fluids (urine) of the personnel was estimated using three methods. It was shown that OBT in the body of the personnel accounted for 70 to 90 %. These data indicate that OBT in the body of the personnel accounts for a larger share in comparison with HTO, therefore, the dose assessments of the personnel when working with tritium and its compounds should be revised. Conclusion: Taking into account the developed methods for the separation of tritium oxide and its organic forms, the assessment of the dose induced by tritium exposure should be performed gradually, taking into account the ratio of these forms in the body of the particular worker.

Food is not just a pleasure in life, it is also an important factor for our health. Human nutrition is a mixture of nutrients, which are the only source of energy needed for survival. Energy-poor diet endangers many life functions, and above all the working ability. In the world, the meaning of the diet is very serious, and hence the demands for a –rational, healthy and safe diet are growing. Human nutrition contains saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) must be ingested in everyday diet because the body does not produce it. They are very important for human health. They are present in each cell of the human body and are an important factor for the normal growth, development and functioning of cells, muscles, nerves and organs. They are also used in the production of certain hormones - such as prostaglandins, which are crucial for the performance of certain important processes. The deficit from EFAs is due to a number of health problems, including more serious diseases.

The article deals with the measurement of dynamic effects that are transmitted to the driver (passenger) when driving in a car over obstacles. The measurements were performed in a real environment on a defined track at different driving speeds and different distributions of obstacles on the road. The reaction of the human organism, respectively the load of the cervical vertebrae and the heads of the driver and passenger, was measured. Experimental measurements were performed for different variants of driving conditions on a 28-year-old and healthy man. The measurement’s main objective was to determine the acceleration values of the seats in the vehicle in the vertical movement of parts of the vehicle cabin and to determine the dynamic effects that are transmitted to the driver and passenger in a car when driving over obstacles. The measurements were performed in a real environment on a defined track at various driving speeds and diverse distributions of obstacles on the road. The acceleration values on the vehicle’s axles and the structure of the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, under the buttocks, at the top of the head (Vertex Parietal Bone) and the C7 cervical vertebra (Vertebra Cervicales), were measured. The result of the experiment was to determine the maximum magnitudes of acceleration in the vertical direction on the body of the driver and the passenger of the vehicle when passing a passenger vehicle over obstacles. The analysis of the experiment’s results is the basis for determining the future direction of the research.

Abstract Background: The conventional method of measuring total body water by the deuterium isotope dilution method uses gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS), which is both expensive and time-consuming. We investigated an alternative method, using Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), which uses less expensive instrumentation and requires little sample preparation. Method: Total body water measurements in human subjects were made by obtaining plasma, saliva, and urine samples before and after oral dosing with 1.5 mol of deuterium oxide. The enrichments of the body fluids were determined from the FTIR spectra in the range 1800–2800 cm−1, using a novel algorithm for estimation of instrumental response, and by IRMS for comparison. Results: The CV (n = 5) for repeat determinations of deuterium oxide in biological fluids and calibrator solutions (400–1000 μmol/mol) was found to be in the range 0.1–0.9%. The use of the novel algorithm instead of the integration routines supplied with the instrument gave at least a threefold increase in precision, and there was no significant difference between the results obtained with FTIR and those obtained with IRMS. Conclusion: This improved infrared method for measuring deuterium enrichment in plasma and saliva requires no sample preparation, is rapid, and has potential value to the clinician.

Real-time, on-body measurement using minimally invasive biosensors opens up new perspectives for diagnosis and disease monitoring. Wearable sensors are placed in close contact with the body, performing analyses in accessible biological fluids (wound exudates, sweat). In this context, a network of biosensing optical fibers woven in textile enables the fabric to measure biological parameters in the surrounding medium. Optical fibers are attractive in view of their flexibility and easy integration for on-body monitoring. Biosensing fibers are obtained by modifying standard optical fibers with a sensitive layer specific to biomarkers. Detection is based on light absorption of the sensing fiber, placing a light source and a detector at both extremities of the fiber. Biosensing optical fibers have been developed for the in situ monitoring of wound healing, measuring pH and the activity of proteases in exudates. Other developments aim at the design of sensing patches based on functionalized, porous sol-gel layers, which can be deposited onto textiles and show optical changes in response to biomarkers. Biosensing textiles present interesting perspectives for innovative healthcare monitoring. Wearable sensors will provide access to new information from the body in real time, to support diagnosis and therapy.

In order to implement the provisions of the Federal law No. 102-FZ and the regulations of the state system of ensuring the unity of measurements on the basis of the metrological service in the Federal state unitary Enterprise GosNII GA test laboratory software SI and information and measurement systems (IIS). In terms of software testing, the scope of authority of the laboratory includes algorithms and software (standalone and embedded) MI and IIS used in air transport and in the aviation industry. The article describes the main tasks solved by the laboratory in the process of certification of the SYSTEM software.

In domestic and foreign practice, a great deal of experience has been accumulated in the creation of means for monitoring the functional state of the human body. The existing complexes mainly analyze the electrocardiogram, blood pressure and a number of other physiological parameters. Diagnostics is often based on formal statistical data which are not always correct due to the nonstationarity of bioprocesses and without taking into account their physical nature. An urgent task of monitoring the state of the cardiovascular system is the creation of effective algorithms for computer technologies to process biosignals based on nonlinear dynamic models of body systems since biosystems and bioprocesses have a nonlinear nature and fractal structure. The nervous and muscular systems of the heart, the vascular and bronchial systems of the human body are examples of such structures. The connection of body systems with their organization in the form of self-similar fractal structures with scaling close to the “golden ratio” makes it possible to diagnose them topically. It is possible to obtain detailed information about the state of the human body’s bio-networks for topical diagnostics on the basis of the wavelet analysis of biosignals (the so-called wavelet-introscopy). With the help of wavelet transform, it is possible to reveal the structure of biosystems and bioprocesses, as a picture of the lines of local extrema of wavelet diagrams of biosignals. Mathematical models and software for wavelet introscopy make it possible to extract additional information from biosignals about the state of biosystems. Early detection of latent forms of diseases using wavelet introscopy can shorten the cure time and reduce the consequences of disorders of the functional state of the body (FSO), and reduce the risk of disability. Taking into account the factors of organizing the body’s biosystems in the form of self-similar fractal structures with a scaling close to the “golden ratio” makes it possible to create a technique for topical diagnostics of the most important biosystems of the human body.

An interest in plants of Amelanchier genus is stimulated by the necessity of search for plant sources rich in biologically active substances and possessing the ability to influence different physiological processes in a human organism. The article gives information about places of growth of different species of Amelanchier (Amelanchier Medic) and about the fact that its fruits contain high concentration of free sugars, relatively low level of organic acids, sufficient amounts of various vitamins and provitamins and a complex of mineral substances. Nutritive and biological value of Amelanchier fruits in complex may produce a beneficial effect on different biochemical and physiological processes of normal vital activity of a human organism. The data are given about a positive influence of enteral introduction of polysaccharides isolated from Amelanchier fruits, on different physiological processes that enhance adaptational reserves of an organism of experimental animals. In particular, it was shown that watersoluble polysaccharide complex (WSPC) of Amelanchier fruits activates erythropoiesis increasing the amount of erythrocytes and hemoglobin in blood of experimental animals and raises concentration of iron. WSPC improves physical working capacity and increases the body mass of experimental animals. Addition of watersoluble polysaccharide complex of Amelanchier fruits to blood of a healthy donor increases thermal, osmotic and peroxide resistance of erythrocyte membranes thus protecting cells against damage under action of adverse factors in the experiment. Fruits of plants of Amelanchier genus may be recommended to be used as a food additive or a product in dietary and prophylactic therapy.

The introduction of the “brain death” criterion constitutes a significant paradigm shift in the determination of death. The perception of the public at large is that the Catholic Church has formally endorsed this neurological standard. However, a critical reading of the only magisterial document on this subject, Pope John Paul II's 2000 address, shows that the pope's acceptance of the neurological criterion is conditional in that it entails a twofold requirement. It requires that certain medical presuppositions of the neurological standard are fulfilled, and that its philosophical premise coheres with the Church's teaching on the body-soul union. This article demonstrates that the medical presuppositions are not fulfilled, and that the doctrine of the brain as the central somatic integrator of the body does not cohere either with the current holistic understanding of the human organism or with the Church's Thomistic doctrine of the soul as the form of the body. Summary The concept of “brain death” (the neurological basis for legally declaring a person dead) has caused much controversy since its inception. In this regard, it has been generally perceived that the Catholic Church has officially affirmed the “brain death” criterion. The address of Pope John Paul II in 2000 shows, however, that he only gave it a conditional acceptance, one which requires that several medical and philosophical presuppositions of the “brain death” standard be fulfilled. This article demonstrates, taking into consideration both the empirical evidence and the Church's Thomistic anthropology, that the presuppositions have not been fulfilled.

Introduction: Although for a long time considered as simple cellular debris, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are now known to be involved in many pathophysiological processes such as thrombosis, autoimmune diseases and inflammation. Due to their diversity and presence in different tissues, EVs are considered important biomarkers and thus, their precise detection in various biological fluids is important to better understand all their different functional activities. The lymphatic system works in close collaboration with the cardiovascular system to preserve fluid balance throughout the body. Lymphatic vessels are present in almost all vascularized tissues, including the brain and the artery wall, and their role in these organ-related pathologies are under intense investigations. Hypothesis: Since lymphatic vessels are often perceived as "sewers", due to their role in removing interstitial fluid and waste products from peripheral tissues such as the artery wall, we herein want to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the presence of EVs in circulating lymph. Methods and Results: Using several approaches such as a Zetasizer Nano S, electron microscopy and flow cytometry analysis, we have detected and characterized EVs in lymph of healthy animals, and found that these EVs are inclusively derived from red blood cells, platelets and lymphatic endothelial cells. Analysis of lymph from atherosclerotic mice (Ldlr -/- ) confirmed the idea that EVs number and origin varies according to the pathological setting. Conclusion: Herein, we show for the first time that EVs are present in lymph and that their level and origin vary in atherosclerosis. Our work will be setting the stage to a better understanding of the mechanism underlying EV accumulation in peripheral tissues during inflammation, and to better control related diseases.

Properties of epoxy glues of cold curing VK-9 and VKV-9, the components received with use which are let out by modern producers, depending on the filler used in their structure are considered. Tests of glued joints on VK-9 glue in wider interval of temperatures are carried out. Properties of VK-36 glue and its updating’s on the basis of components let out now are shown. Properties of glue binding brands VSK-14-1, VSK-14-2, VSK-14-4, VSK-14-4m and VSK-14-4k received, under production conditions by VIAM Federal State Unitary Enterprise are given. It is shown that on the properties they completely meet the requirements of existing normative documentation.
