ObjectivesConcern about trainee work-related well-being has been raised in recent years and is the subject of several reviews, reports and research studies. This study aimed to understand the experiences of trainees working in a large intensive care unit during the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic from an educational and operational perspective in order to highlight what worked and what could be improved.DesignA qualitative study using peer-to-peer semistructured interviews, developed using appreciative inquiry methodology, was conducted during July 2020. Responses were analysed using a thematic analysis technique.SettingA large, tertiary intensive care unit in the UK.ParticipantsAll trainees in anaesthesia and intensive care working on the intensive care unit during the first surge were invited to participate.ResultsForty interviews were conducted and four over-arching themes were identified. These were: feeling safe and supported; physical demands; the emotional burden of caring; and a sense of fulfilment, value and personal development. Positive aspects of the organisational response to the pandemic included communication, personal protective equipment supply, team working and well-being support. Suggestions for improvement focused on rest facilities, rota patterns and hierarchies, creating opportunities for reflection and ensuring continued educational and training opportunities despite operational demands.ConclusionsTrainees described opportunities for learning and fulfilment, as well as challenges, in working through a pandemic. Trainees described their needs and how well these were met during the pandemic. Ideas for improvement most frequently related to basic needs including safety and fatigue, but suggestions also related to supporting learning and development. The appreciative inquiry methodology of the project facilitated effective reflection on positive aspects of trainee experiences.

Organisations are investing in employee well-being initiatives, as employees constitute the most important stakeholder group. Employee well-being requires a focused and concentrated approach. The main aim of this study was to assess the importance of  employee well-being in organisations in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The study was based on the five domains of employee well-being model [1]. The five domains being the health domain, the work domain, the values/principles domain, the collective/social domain, and the personal growth domain. The study revealed that majority of the participating organisations were focusing more on factors related to physical health and physical safety of their employees than on mental health. Significant factors like pay and rewards, autonomy, job satisfaction, people management policies, professional management,  workload distribution, and leadership need improvement when compared to factors like work-life balance, open and inclusive work environment. All these factors relate to the work  domain.  In the values/principles domain, more participating organisations had a clear mission and objectives, and were investing in  training their managers and employees, whereas ethical standards, diversity and inclusion, cultural engagement, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, dignity at work and mutual trust at the workplace, needs to be given more attention. Very few participating organisations have value-based leadership and a well-being strategy in place. Teamworking, dignity and respect at the workplace  were evident in more participating organisations than factors like positive and healthy relationships, employee voice, supportive management style. All these factors contribute to the collective/social domain of employee well-being,  In the personal growth domain,  performance management and personal development plans,  open and collaborative culture, and succession planning were prevalent in more participating organisations than effective utilisation of employees’ skills, coaching and mentoring, resilience training, positive emotional relationships, financial well-being, challenging work , lifelong learning, access to training  and creativity. Mid-career review was conspicuous by its absence in all participating organisations. The study reveals that employee well-being in organisations in the Kingdom of Bahrain needs more attention and focus than what is being accorded now.

Abstract Going through a divorce is one of the most stressful life events across the life course with far-reaching ripple effects for individuals’ physical, mental, and often financial well-being. For some individuals, however, coping with marital dissolution and adapting to new social roles may lead to considerable gains in their reorientation in life and stimulate their personal development. This is captured in the concept of personal growth, which has been studied primarily in the context of becoming widowed, and through a cross-sectional lens. In our study, we track trajectories of personal growth after ending a long-term marriage of at least 15 years. We focus on divorce among adults in their second half of life because rates of grey divorce have been on the rise since the 1980s, yet longitudinal research on personal growth after marital dissolution remains sparse. We further examine whether trajectories of personal growth vary by gender, SES, reasons of divorce (e.g., sexual infidelity or drifted apart), and social support. Data stem from a Swiss panel on intimate relationships and marital dissolution among long-term married individuals conducted between 2012 and 2016 (N = 530). Random-effects group-specific growth curve models yielded similar—and slightly decreasing—trajectories of personal growth for divorced women and men over time. However, highly significant gender differences indicated that women showed higher levels of personal growth over the whole observation period. Because gender differences seemed to be fueled by social capital rather than economic assets, we discuss these results through the lens of a linked-lives perspective.

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues we face, and the Fridays for Future wave of protests is unique both in its youth character and global reach. However, still not enough is known about how young activists experience their involvement and how the experience of climate activism connects to their personal development and psychological well-being. To gain an enhanced understanding of this issue, we conducted a qualitative study based on eight in-depth interviews with individuals deeply involved in the Youth Climate Strike in Poland. We analyzed the interviews using a rigorous multi-stage thematic analysis. Results showed that the empowering aspects of activism were associated with a heightened sense of agency, a sense of belonging to a community, a sense of duty and ethical integrity, of finding one's voice and learning new skills, and a sense of personal growth. Activists also indicated aggravating aspects of involvement, such as involving the struggle for balance between activism and other spheres of life, overwork, and conflicts within a peer group. In conclusion, in contrast to the pressing nature of the climate change conundrum, climate activism is often experienced by its young participants as a mostly empowering experience.

The authors ground the necessity to clarify the terminological and phenomenological specifics of the terms: “self-fulfillment”, “personal development”, “self-development”. The attention is drawn to the formal usage of these terms in the pedagogical science and the ambiguous interpretations by different scientific schools of psychology. The research of the manifestation of self-fulfillment and personal development is performed based on a selection of 126 teenagers, engaging the “Personal growth” scales from the methods of psychological well-being by C. Ryff, the “Personal growth” scales from the methods of “Life aspirations” by E.Deci, R.Ryan, as well as the author’s method of directivity to self-fulfillment and method to reveal the significance by V.Y, Kotlyakov. For the first time the authors’ questionnaire to measure the self-development in different life spheres is employed. The analysis of the empirical results allows to make a grounded statement that the contemporary teenagers have a prevailing egocentric directivity of self-fulfillment and reveals as well the importance of the interest to the moral aspects of being and the interiorized values of personal growth for the harmonious self-fulfillment of the teenager.

Involving and engaging vulnerable communities from the very beginning is important if we wish to enhance general well-being. With a focus on equal partnership with low-socioeconomic status (SES) families, a Trading Shop in Vaals was developed as a community engagement initiative. In the current study, we focused on the participation process, from preparation to sustaining the Trading Shop, in order to define whether the Trading Shop can be successful in engaging families through focusing specially on their needs and perceived positive health. A formative case study design was carried out to monitor, evaluate, and timely adjust the developments within the Trading Shop by using participatory action research. The Trading Shop was monitored from its preparation to its opening, as well as during the start and the steps taken towards continuation in the form of municipal policy. The results showed one central theme during all phases: the optimal navigation between top-down support from professionals and bottom-up developments among the volunteers in the Trading Shop. With the input from both approaches, it was possible to create an optimal environment for the volunteers to achieve personal development. The inclusivity and accessibility of the Trading Shop as a community engagement initiative offered the opportunity to volunteers to enhance their needs, realizing personal growth and development of their talents in several positive health domains.
