Abstract Lisianthus is a major cut flower, but it has a short vase life. To prolong postharvest longevity and improve quantitative and qualitative traits of cut lisianthus flowers, an experiment was conducted on the basis of a Completely Randomized Design with eight treatments on 120 flower sprays in three replications. The experimental treatments included salicylic acid (SA) at the rates of 50, 100 and 200 mg L-1, cerium nitrate [Ce(NO3)3] at the rates of 20, 40, 80, and 200 μM, and control (distilled water). The results revealed that the flowers treated with 40 μM Ce(NO3)3 and those treated with 100 mg L-1 SA had the longest vase life of 15.42 and 15.20 days, respectively. Also, these treatments were most effective in improving water uptake, reducing microbial load at the stem end, and enhancing petals’ protein content. The lowest malondialdehyde (18.65 nmol g-1fresh weight) was related to the treatment of 40 μM Ce(NO3)3 and 100 mg L-1 SA. These treatments showed the lowest polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, too. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and peroxidase (POD) antioxidant enzymes was significantly higher in the flowers treated with 40 μM Ce(NO3)3 and 100 mg L-1 SA. The treatment of 200 mg L-1 SA had negative effects on all the recorded traits. So, it can be concluded that the treatment of cut lisianthus flowers with 40 μM Ce(NO3)3 and 100 mg L-1 SA can prolong their postharvest longevity by reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Extensive use of synthetic insecticides, herbicides and other pesticides has negative effects on the environment and on human and animal health. Therefore scientists are turning towards natural pesticides such as active components of plant extracts. Effect of two concentrations (0.1% and 0.2%) of Satureja montana L. aqueous extract on lipid peroxidation process, as well as the activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPX, PPX and CAT) in leaves and roots of pepper and black nightshade seedlings were examined 24, 72 and 120h after the treatment. Our results showed that higher concentration of S. montana aqueous extract induced lipid peroxidation in black nightshade roots. Furthermore, significant increases of pyrogallol and guaiacol peroxidase were detected in black nightshade leaves treated with 0.2% S. montana aqueous extract. The second aim was to evaluate effectiveness of aqueous extract as contact toxicant against whitefly. It was observed that aqueous extract with concentration of 0.2% showed toxic effect with 68.33% mortality after 96h.

Hypertension or high blood pressure and its complications is a major cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world. The development of hypertension has been linked to atherosclerosis formation and progression which in turn has its root in free radicals induced oxidative stress and antioxidants present. This work was undertaken to determine plasma activity of enzymatic antioxidants and lipid peroxidation level in patients with moderate and severe hypertension to establish a possible association between these parameters and progression of hypertension. A total number of 60 hypertensive patients that are freshly diagnosed made up of 30 moderate and 30 severe hypertensive patients with 30 relatively healthy subjects as control recruited from Wesley Guide Hospital, Ilesa, Osun State Nigeria was used for this study. Plasma activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and plasma level of malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined in both patients and control subjects using standard methodologies. The results obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Duncan test with (p<0.05) considered to be significant. The result of this study revealed a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes considered. The plasma MDA in all the patients was raised but not statistically significant p<0.05 from result obtained for the control subjects. Progressive decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in these patients and a possible oxidative stress as hypertension progresses as shown in this study could be a pointer to the fact that these molecules might influence greatly the progression of hypertension.

AbstractThe paper presents information on pneumonia (P) patients with features of oxidative stress (OS). Identifying features of OS in patients with P is of interest not only for diagnosis, but also for monitoring of treatment efficiency. We recruited 73 patients with community-acquired P (CAP), previously healthy adults, both males and females with mean age of 68.0 ± 15.2, hospitalised, and 61 healthy control patients matched for age. For quantitative evaluation of lipid peroxidation in CAP patients, the levels of aldehydic lipid peroxidation products like malondialdehyde (MDA) and 4- hydroxynon-2-enal (HNE) were quantified. Furthermore, concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) and several antioxidant enzymes and selenium in plasma were determined. In CAP patients, decreased levels of GSH and plasma selenium were observed. Plasma levels of MDA, and HNE did significantly differ between patient and control groups. We also noted reduced activity of antioxidant enzymes, namely, glutation peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Low antioxidant enzymes activity was associated with a more severe CAP pattern. Both GSH and antioxidant enzymes may serve as markers for inflammation-related OS in CAP patients, and measurement of these biomarkers may be a valid indentifier for its management.

Abstract Background Chitosan and Ca+ are natural signal molecules that can be used in agriculture as biostimulants and elicitors. They enhance different physiological responses and mitigate the negative effects of salinity. So, this investigation was done to study the effect of soaking wheat grains in chitosan and CaCO3 (20 and 40 mg/L) on alleviating the adverse effect of salinity stress (0.0 and 5000 mg/L) on growth, some biochemical and physiological and yields of wheat plant. Results Shoot length (cm), leaves no/tiller, shoot dry weight (g), root fresh weight (g) and root dry weight (g) were significantly decreased as a result of salt stress. Soaking wheat grains in Chitosan or CaCO3 significantly promoted plant growth under normal and stressed conditions. Irrigation of wheat plants with saline water significantly decreased photosynthetic pigments (Chlo-a, Chlo-b, carotenoids and total pigments) in addition to Chlo-a/Chlo-b ratio, indole acetic acid content in the plant leaves. Meanwhile, saline water significantly increased phenolics, total soluble sugars (TSS) and proline content. H2O2 and lipid peroxidation expressed by malondialdehyde (MDA) content clearly showed significant increases under salinity stress compared with untreated control. Soaking wheat grains in chitosan or CaCO3 before sawing significantly increased the accumulation of H2O2 and MDA in the leaves of wheat plants. Treatment of wheat grains with chitosan or CaCO3 significantly promoted the activity of various antioxidant enzymes (SOD and POX) as compared to the control. CAT activity was significantly decreased as a result of chitosan or CaCO3 treatments. The highest CAT activity was recorded in plants irrigated with 5000 mg/L saline water followed by control plants which recoded 36.40 and 24.82 U/min/g FW, respectively. On the other hand, irrigation of wheat plants with 5000 mg/L saline water significantly decreased spike length (cm), spikelets no/spike, grains wt/plant (g), 1000-grains wt (g), yield and biomass/plant (g) as well as, carbohydrate % and protein % compared with the control. However, treating wheat plants either with Chitosan or calcium carbonate resulted in obvious significant increases in carbohydrates and protein contents, especially in plants treated with 40 mg/L chitosan followed by 40 mg/L calcium carbonate. Soaking wheat grains in chitosan, especially at 40 mg/L, exhibited the strongest scavenging potential (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate assay (DPPH%) followed by treatment with 40 mg/L CaCO3. Conclusion In conclusion, the used treatment enhanced the protective parameters such as antioxidant enzymes, total phenols and free radical scavengers and consequently helped the plants to decrease lipid peroxidation, increased their tolerance and improved yield and spike quality. Application of 40 mg/L chitosan recorded the highest increment in the scavenging ability of the natural antioxidants of the plant extract toward the stable free radical DPPH.

The effects of salicylic acid (SA), 8-Hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS), and sucrose on cut gerbera was studied. SA (0, 100 and 150 mg l-1), 8-HQS (0 and 200 mg l-1), and sucrose (0 and 30 g l-1) and their combinations were tested as preservative mixture. This study was conducted in a factorial experiment with complete randomized design. SA increased vase life and reduced stem curvature at the concentration of 100 mg L-1. SA at 150 mg L-1 increased mean absorbed preservative solution. 8-HQS increased vase life, dry weight, wet weight, flower diameter, mean absorbed preservative solution, and quality score. 8-HQS also decreased the stem curvature. Sucrose decreased vase life, flower diameter, and quality score, whereas increased dry weight. The treatment containing 8-HQS (200 mg L-1) had vase life of 12.9 days which was not significantly different from the combination of SA (100 mg L-1) + 8-HQS (200 mg L-1)which resulted in the longest vase life of 15.6 days. The results show that SA could increase vase life in combination with 8-HQS.

ABSTRAK Glutathione merupakan antioksidan yang berfungsi melindungi sel dari kerusakan akibat oksigen reaktif (ROS) sehingga dapat mencegah reaksi peroksidasi lipid. Penggunaan glutathione dalam pengencer harus sesuai supaya tidak menimbulkan efek negatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh level glutathione terhadap kualitas semen kambing Peranakan Etawah post thawing dan mengetahui level glutathione yang menghasilkan kualitas semen yang terbaik. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah percobaan laboratorium. Penelitian ini mengunakan rancangan acak kelompok dengan lima kelompok kambing dan lima level glutathione (0, 4, 6, 8 dan 10 mM), setiap perlakuan diulang dua kali. Semen ditampung dengan vagina buatan dan dievaluasi secara makroskopis dan mikroskopis, selanjutnya dilakukan pengolahan menjadi semen beku Data dianalisis dengan analisis ragam dan perbedaan antar perlakuan diuji dengan uji lanjut Duncan. Parameter yang diamati adalah kualitas semen post-thawing meliputi motilitas, abnormalitas, membran plasma utuh dan tudung akrosom utuh (TAU). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan level glutathione berpengaruh nyata (p<0,05) terhadap kualitas semen post-thawing. Hasil uji Duncan menunjukkan bahwa motilitas, TAU dari perlakuan level glutathione 6 mM dan 8 mM tidak berbeda nyata, namun MPU hasil 8 mM nyata lebih tinggi dari level lainnya. Disimpulkan bahwa level glutathione berpengaruh terhadap kualitas semen post-thawing, dan level glutathione 8 mM menghasilkan kualitas semen yang terbaik.Kata kunci: glutathione, kualitas semen, post-thawing, kambing peranakan etawahABSTRACT Glutathione is an antioxidant that functions to protect cells from damage caused by reactive oxygen (ROS) so that it can prevent lipid peroxidation reactions. The use of glutathione in diluents must be suitable so as not to cause negative effects The aim of the research was to knew the effect of glutathione level on semen quality of Etawah Crossbreed goat and to know the level of glutathione that produce the best post-thawed semen quality. This research used grouped randomized design with five groups of goat and five glutathione levels (0, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mM), every treatment was repeated twice. Semen was collected with an artificial vagina and was evaluated as macroscopic and microscopic, they were being processed as frozen semen. Data were analyzed with analysis of variance and differences between treatments were analyzed using the Duncan test. Parameter was observed is pot-thawed semen quality consist of motility, abnormality, intact plasma membrane (IPM) and intact acrosome cup (IAC). The result showed that treatment of glutathione level significantly (p<0.05) affect on post-thawed semen quality. Duncan test showed that motility and IAC from treatment glutathione of 6 mM and 8mM were not significant, nevertheless IPM from treatment 8 mM glutathione significantly higher than other levels. It is concluded that the glutathione level significantly affect on post-thawed semen quality, and 8 mM glutathione level resulted in the best quality.Keywords:  glutathione, semen quality, post-thawed, etawah crossbreed goat

Objetive:  Evaluate different techniques to prolong the postharvest life of  Heliconia psittacorum x H. spathocircinata cv. Tropics. Design/methodology/approach: Two experiments were carried out; in the first it was evaluated the effect of five pulse solutions [(T1 = control (water); T2 = Hydraflor® 100 (0.5 g L-1); T3 = Hydraflor® 100 (0.5 g L-1) + sucrose (5% w/v); T4 = salicylic acid (1mM) and T5 = salicylic acid (1mM) + sucrose (5% w / v)] prior to storage at 11 ° C and 85 % RH for 10 d. In the second experiment, a wax coating was applied to the heliconia bracts and then maintain at 13 °C and 84% RH for 10 d; after storage the stems were placed in water or salicylic acid solution (1 mM). The results were analyzed by a completely randomized design, 10 replicates were used per treatment, one stem was one experimental unit. An ANOVA and a means comparison test (Tukey, ?=0.05) were performed with the SAS version 9.4. Results: The anatomy of heliconia stems determines their vase life, since they have wide xylem vessels susceptible to cavitation, for which the absorption of water is limited, also and non-functional stomata in the bracts, which increase the loss of moisture from the tissue. The use of pulse solutions or preservatives has little effect in prolonging the life of heliconia stems. Therefore, the application of wax creates a physical barrier that maintains the turgor of the stems, reduces oxidation, maintaining the bracts quality and increased the total postharvest life for 6 d more than the control stems. Study limitations/implications: No limitations were found in this study Findings/conclusions: The postharvest life of heliconia is conditioned by the loss of turgor and low water absorption, which leads to an early wilting of the inflorescences. The application of pulse solutions or preservatives have little effect in prolonging the life of the vase, so the most suitable technique to preserve the quality of the stems is waxing.

Abstract. Physical exercise increases free radicals production; antioxidant supplementation may improve the muscle fiber’s ability to scavenge ROS and protect muscles against exercise-induced oxidative damage. This study was designed to examine the effects of all-trans resveratrol supplementation as an antioxidant to mediate anti-oxidation and lipid per-oxidation responses to exercise in male Wistar rats. Sixty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four equal number (n = 16) including training + supplement (TS), training (T), supplement (S) and control (C) group. The rats in TS and S groups received a dose of 10 mg/kg resveratrol per day via gavage. The training groups ran on a rodent treadmill 5 times per week at the speed of 10 m/min for 10 min; the speed gradually increased to 30 m/min for 60 minutes at the end of 12th week. The acute phase of exercise protocol included a speed of 25 m/min set to an inclination of 10° to the exhaustion point. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) activity, non-enzymatic antioxidants bilirubin, uric acid, lipid peroxidation levels (MDA) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured after the exercise termination. The data were analyzed by using one-way ANOVA. The result showed that endurance training caused a significant increase in MDA level [4.5 ± 0.75 (C group) vs. 5.9 ± 0.41 nmol/l (T group)] whereas it decreased the total antioxidant capacity [8.5 ± 1.35 (C group) vs. 7.1 ± 0.55 mmol/l (T group)] (p = 0.001). In addition, GPx and CAT decreased but not significantly (p > 0.05). The training and t-resveratrol supplementation had no significant effect on the acute response of all variables except MDA [4.3 ± 1.4 (C group) vs. 4.0 ± 0.90 nmol/l (TS group)] (p = 0.001) and TAC [8.5 ± 0.90 (C group) vs. 6.6 ± 0.80 mmol/l (TS group)] (p = 0.004). It was concluded that resveratrol supplementation may prevent exercise-induced oxidative stress by preventing lipid peroxidation.
