OBJECTIVE: The present study assessed the pregnancy and lactation performances of rats fed an experimental diet based on the foods listed in the Family Budget Survey (Pesquisa de Orçamento Familiar) 2002/2003 and the impact of said diet on the growth and development of the pups until weaning. METHODS: Wistar (n=12) rats were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (control group, n=6) fed a commercial chow (Labina®, Brazil) and an experimental group (n=6) fed the Family Budget Survey diet during the entire pregnancy and lactation period. All animals had free access to food and water during the entire study period. RESULTS: The Family Budget Survey diet increased the duration of pregnancy (control group=21.00±0.00; POFG=21.57±0.55, p=0.025) and made the dams lose weight during the lactation period (control group=27.92±18.47g; POFG=-15.66±16.90g). The Family Budget Survey group presented low food, energy and nutrient intakes during pregnancy, which became even lower during lactation. Pups from Family Budget Survey dams presented lower body weight at weaning (control group=52.38±4.49g; POFG=39.88±2.78g, p=0.001) and lower nose-to-anus length (control group= 117.37±0.64mm; POFG=125.62±0.96mm, p=0.001). However, some physical milestones and reflexes occurred earlier, such as the placing response reflex [control group= 12.00 (9.00-15.00) days; POFG=9.50 (9.00-14.00) days] aerial righting reflex [control group=18.00 (17.00-20.00) days; POFG=16.00 (13.00-18.00) days] and unfolding of the external ear [control group=3.00 (3.00-3.00) days; POFG=2.00 (2.00-3.00) days]. CONCLUSION: The Family Budget Survey diet seems to be more detrimental to the physical growth of the pups than to their brain growth, according to the assessed reflexes and physical milestones and measures. This may be due to the low protein content of the diet for rat reproduction and growth combined with adequate fat and essential fatty acid contents. Providing an adequate amount of protein to the Family Budget Survey diet may normalize pup growth.

For some people, dementia is considered as a disease that is common in elderly, regardless the impact of dementia. Taking care for the elderly with dementia brings stress for the family. It can cause and increase the family burden. Brain vitalization gymnastics is one of the methods to improve memory. The study aims to investigate the effect of brain vitalization activity on dementia incidence in elderly at Budi Luhur Nursing Home of Yogyakarta. The study used Quasi Experimental with Pretest-Posttest control group and randomized sampling system. The samples were taken randomly as many as 26 respondents and were divided into two groups namely 13 respondents of experimental group and 13 respondents of control group. The statistical test used Wilcoxon Match Pairs Test. The result showed that Wilcoxon Match pairs test obtained p value 0,003, which is smaller than 0,005. There is an effect of brain vitalization activity on dementia incidence in elderly at Budi Luhur Nursing Home of Yogyakarta

A prospective, randomized, controlled trial was conducted to assess the effects of early physical therapy on infants at risk for neurologic sequelae and to evaluate the impact of such early treatment on the prevention or minimization of future handicaps. A cohort of 134 infants who had received care in two Montreal inborn neonatal intensive care units was identified prospectively. Infants were stratified according to prognosis and birth weight and were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. Babies assigned to the experimental group received early physical therapy, whereas those allocated to the control group received conventional follow-up care. Outcome measures were administered by independent evaluators at 12 months and included measures of neurologic status, motor and overall development, and physical growth. No statistically significant differences on any of the measured outcomes at 12 months were found between the experimental and control groups. Infants weighing less than 750 g at birth, regardless of group assignment, consistently demonstrated significant delays in their growth and development when compared with their heavier peers. The early physical therapy program investigated in this study was not efficacious in altering the pattern of motor development in those high-risk infants participating in the trial.

Abstract Background The importance of sleep and the impact of its deprivation on development of brain pathology became a recent subject of interest in medicine. The restorative effect of sleep on the brain and the harmful effects of insomnia have been recently revealed through the discovery of the glymphatic system and its association with sleep. Aim of work Specific objectives are: To detect histological and apoptotic changes in the neurons and dendrites of the cornu Amonis and the dentate gyrus in sleep deprived rats in comparison to rats with undisturbed sleep pattern (control). To detect deposition of neurotoxic metabolites in comu Amonis and dentate gyrus in sleep deprived rats in comparison to controls. Methods Twenty four adult male Albino rats were used in the present experiment. randomly categorized into four equal groups; Group A1 served as the control group, Group .A2 one day sleep deprivation, Group A3 three days sleep deprivation and Group A4 seven days sleep deprivation. They were deprived of sleep using grid over water method where the animals placed over a grid suspended above tank filled with water with free access to food (rat chew) and water. Hippocampai specimens were collected, processed for paraffin blocks and examined by light microscopy. Results there were neurodegenerative signs appeared from day one sleep deprivation, increased by day three and prevailed by day seven. It was confirmed by apoptotic changes detected by caspase 3 immunohistochemical staining. Furthermore, deposition of beta amyloid appeared in rats deprived of sleep and confirmed by congo red stain. Conclusion Adequate sleep is essential for integrity of the newly discovered glymphatic system responsible for clearance of the brain from waste products including the area most involved in learning and memory function; the hippocampus. Correction of SD could be a viable therapeutic strategy to prevent the onset or slow the progression of AD. Recommendations Further characterization of the glymphatic system in humans are required, it may lead to new therapies and methods of prevention of neurodegenerative diseases. Correction of SD could be a viable therapeutic strategy to prevent the onset or slow the progression of AD.

The prevalence of CHF is increasing every year. The impact of a psychosocial condition requiring comprehensive treatment for CHF in all aspects. One contributing factor to success is the involvement of the family. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the differences of social support towards clients with CHF who were receiving family psychoeducation.  Method: This study used a Quasi -experimental pre-post test without a control group”.  A sample of  25 respondents and sample retrieval techniques with a purposive sampling procedure. The instrument used was an ISSB questionnaire for measuring social support. The intervention group was provided with family psychoeducation that performed 5 sessions. Result and conclusion: The finding this study showed was a significant change before and after the family support family psychoeducation (p-value 0.00<α).  Characteristics of the family and the client is not associated with social support. Family psychoeducation research way recommended developed in a public hospital.

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a counseling supervisory program based on the discrimination model in improving crisis counseling skills for family reform counselors in Jordan. The sample of the study consisted of 30 female and male counselors, who were randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group (15) male and female counselors received the supervisory program according to the discrimination model with 90-minute 18 weekly sessions over 9 weeks, whereas  the control group (15) female and male counselors did not receive the supervisory program. The  Family Crisis Skills  Scale which  consists  of 59 items was divided into three subscales: Family Crisis Counseling, Counseling Relation Skills, and Procedures of Intervention & Response to Crisis. It  was  used with the total sample in the pre-post-test, and in the follow-up test only with experimental group. The results of the study showed that there are statistically significant differences in the overall mean scores of  the  posttest and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale between the two study group, in favor of the experimental group. Also, the results showed that although the differences between the two groups  in the overall mean scores of the post-follow-up test and all sub-scales of the Family Crisis Skills Scale were not statistically significant, there was a positive gain of improvement for the experimental group. These findings suggest that the counselors in the experimental group retained the impact of the program, and provided  evidence that the impact of the program was efficient and sustainable.

Purpose. To screen out pathogenic genes in a Chinese family with congenital cataract and iris coloboma. Material and Methods. A three-generation family with congenital cataract and iris coloboma from a Han ethnicity was recruited. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples collected from all individuals in the family. Whole exon sequencing was employed for screening the disease-causing gene mutations in the proband, and Sanger sequencing was used for other members of the family and a control group of 500 healthy individuals. Bioinformatics analysis and three-dimensional structure predictions were used to predict the impact of amino acid changes on protein structure and function. Results. The candidate genes of cataract and iris coloboma were successfully screened out. A heterozygote mutation, CRYGD c.70C>A (p.P24T), was identified as cosegregating with congenital cataracts, while another heterozygous mutation, WFS1 c.1514G>C (p.C505S), which had not been reported previously, cosegregated with congenital iris coloboma. Bioinformatic analyses and three-dimensional structure prediction proved that the three-dimensional structures of WFS1 p.C505S and CRYGD p.P24T changed markedly and may contribute significantly to iris coloboma and congenital cataract, respectively. Conclusions. We report a novel mutation, WFS1 p.C505S, and a known mutation, CRYGD p.P24T, that cosegregate with iris coloboma and congenital cataract, respectively, in a Chinese family. This is the first time the association of WFS1 p.C505S with iris coloboma has been demonstrated, although CRYGD p.P24T has been widely reported as being associated with congenital cataract, especially in the Eastern Asian population. These findings may have future therapeutic benefit for the diagnosis of iris coloboma and congenital cataract. The results may also be relevant in further studies aiming to investigate the molecular pathogenesis of iris coloboma and congenital cataract.

AbstractIntroduction: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of deoxynivalenol (DON), given alone or with bentonite (which eliminates mycotoxicity) in the diet of mink dams throughout mating, pregnancy, and lactation period to pelt harvesting, on the mechanical properties and geometry of their long bones.Material and Methods: The minks were randomly assigned into two groups: a control group (not supplemented with DON, n = 15) and a group fed naturally DON-contaminated wheat and divided into three sub-groups (each sub-group n = 15), depending on bentonite dose: 0 M – sub-group fed naturally DON-contaminated wheat at a concentration of 3.7 mg kg−1 alone; 2 M – sub-group fed naturally DON-contaminated wheat at a concentration of 3.7 mg kg−1 and bentonite at a concentration of 2 kg 1000 kg−1; 0.5 M – sub-group fed naturally DON-contaminated wheat at a concentration of 3.7 mg kg−1 and bentonite at a concentration of 0.5 kg 1000 kg−1.Results: The DON treatment reduced the length of the femur compared to the control group and reduced the bone weight dependently on the amount of bentonite supplementation. However, DON treatment reduced the MRWT and CI of the femur, irrespective of the bentonite supplementation, compared to the control. The total BTD and BMC decreased in all DON-treated groups (irrespective of the bentonite supplementation). Furthermore, the densitometric analysis showed that the main changes in BMD and BMC indicated bone loss in the proximal and distal parts of bone covering the trabecular bone; whereas when bentonite was given at the dose of 2 kg 1000 kg−1 an increase in the whole BMD and BMC was observed in the femoral midshaft.Conclusion: Analysis of the geometrical parameters seems to indicate that endosteal resorption was delayed after bentonite supplementation. The addition of bentonite diminished the DON action on bone homeostasis in the mink dams. Thus bentonite could prevent DON-induced bone loss in a dose-dependent manner.

The present study was carried out at Bakrajo field station which belongs to the college of Agriculture University Sulaimanya during the period from the1st of April untill 30th of October 2009.This study include 10 crossbred Friesian cows aged 5-7 years old to study some hematological and biochemical changes during late pregnancy (last three months ) and lactation period (4months).The cows were divided into two groups, the first group included 5 non-pregnant cows used as control group while the second group included 5cows were in the late pregnancy (last three months) and continues to four months of miproduction. Statistically all significant results of blood and biochemical results at (P<0.05). The results showed a significant decreased of the erythrocytes number during late stage of pregnancy and lactation period as comparison with non-pregnant cows. Hemoglobin concentration decreased significantly during 3rd and 4th of lactation in comparison with 7th and 8th months of pregnancy and non pregnant animals ,while PCV showed significant increase during 9th month of pregnancy in comparison with 2nd,3rd and4thmonths of lactation and non- pregnant cows. There were a significant increased in MCV and MCH during pregnancy in comparison with months of lactation, and significantly increase of MCHC at 7th month of pregnancy in comparison with 2nd, 3rd and 4th months of lactation. There were a significant increased of Leukocyte count at the last two months of pregnancy in comparison with non-pregnant animals. In regard to the biochemical changes, there was a significant decreased of glucose concentration at both pregnancy and lactation period in comparison with non-pregnant animals. Total serum cholesterol concentration was significantly increased at the pregnancy and lactation period in comparison with control group, while total serum protein concentration significantly decreased at the 1stmonth of lactation in comparison with 2nd, 3rd and 4th months and control group, concentration of ionized calcium and inorganic phosphorus significantly decreased during last period of pregnancy and lactation period in comparison with non-pregnant cows. In regard to serum enzyme change significant increased in the activity of AST during the second month of lactation in comparison

In this study we analyzed patients glucose levels taken before and after coronary artery bypass surgery. The data are taken from University of Sarajevo Clinics Centre-medical documentation of Heart Center from January 1st, 2007 to October 31st, 2007. Therefore, the entire study is done retrospectively. The patients considered in this analysis were divided into three groups. The patients in the first group were treated with peroral antidiabetics. The second group included patients treated with insulin while the third group consisted of patients without diabetes and acted as control group. All the patients had increased BMI. In the first two groups glucose levels were elevated before the surgery. Data analysis showed that three patients from the first group changed from peroral antidiabetics to insulin during postoperative period, and they were dismissed from hospital with this therapy. In the control group, peroral antidiabetis were introduced in four patients. The study results show that all the three groups have had high glycaemia on the first postoperative day. This may be caused by a number of reasons: inadequate pre-operative antidiabetic therapy, the impact of stress during surgery, inadequate pre-operative treatment of glycaemia or avoidance of the proscribed therapy by patients themselves. Stress during operation and administration of several medications after operation may also cause increased insulin resistance and distort glycaemia control.

Introduction: Urban lifestyle fueled by excessive food intake in overweight and obese children. Famili esassumethatobese children are healthy and have no health problems. Strategies to improve the knowledge and culture of the family is the approaches of TCN, CHM dan TTM. This study aims to prove the influence of TCN, CHM and TTM to knowledge and culture’s familyin controlling lifestyle of over weight and obese children. Method: This research was conducted in the areas of Biring kanaya and Tamalanrea Subdistricts, Makassar from August 2013 to March 2014. It used the Quasy Experiment design namely pre-test and post-test with control group design. Research subjects were parents of overweight or obese children in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade of elementary school. There were 31 samples in the treatment group; and 33 samples in the control group. There were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The intervention was given for six months by providing guide books on healthy lifestyle, and visiting the families every month to give questionnaires. The measurements of children’s BMI was conducted by use WHO’s Antrho Plus software, 2007. The data were analyzed by using univariate, bivariate with Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney test and Paired t-test. Result: The results showed that there were differences in mean changes before and after the intervention, namely knowledge of the family with p=0:00 and cultural family with p=0:00. Discussion: It was concluded that the effect of TCN, CHM, and TTM could improve the knowledge and cultural family in controlling lifestyle of overweight and obese children.
