Due to its high nutritive value, royal jelly usage is increasing, both in human nutrition in native form and as bioactive component in other products (dietary supplements, medicines). The database and regulations on royal jelly characteristics are established in several countries, but not in Croatia. Physicochemical characteristics: moisture, protein content, pH value, total acidity, carbohydrate composition and 10-HDA content in 13 Croatian royal jelly samples were determined with the aim of getting insight to quality of royal jelly produced in Croatia. The obtained results showed that regarding 10-HDA content, one of the most important quality parameter, all samples fulfilled the international standard for royal jelly specifications. Moisture of three samples was higher than prescribed (69.5%, 76.3% and 72.0%, respectively) while one sample had slightly lower protein content than minimum 11% prescribed in international standard. Sucrose content in two royal jelly samples was higher than 3%. Statistically significant correlations were obtained between moisture and protein content, 10-HDA and total acidity as well as between fructose and glucose content. The results of this study will contribute to creation the database of Croatian royal jelly physicochemical characteristics and thus help in setting the royal jelly quality criteria at national level

This study is intended to determine the physicochemical characteristics of Slovakian honeys, and compare them with specifications described in the Codex Alimentarius Standard, the European Honey directive, the Slovak Codex Alimentarius and Slovak standard No. 1/2006. In addition, we tried to find out correlations between individual constituents of honeys. Physicochemical characterization was carried out following the harmonized methods dictated by the International Honey Commission IHC. Honey samples (n=50) were collected from three honey types (blossom, blends, honeydew), and from the three main Slovakian geographical regions (named ‘east’, ‘middle’ and ‘west’). The physicochemical evaluation included moisture, reduced sugars, proline, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), conductivity, diastase and invertase activity, pH and water activity, following the techniques proposed by the European Honey Commission (EHC). The moisture content in the honey varied from 15.26 to 17.65 %, HMF levels ranged from 21.83 to 63.00 mg . kg−1, the diastase activity varied from 21.01 DN to 36.67, invertase activity varied from 121.73 to 164.11 U . kg−1, the proline content varied from 426.56 to 531.79 mg . kg−1,the fructose content values were found from 36.33 to 40.20 g . 100g−1, the glucose content values ranged from 27.67 to 31.00 g . 100g−1, the values of saccharose content were from 0.15 to 0.37 g . 100g−1, the conductivity varied from 29.48 to 97.24 mS . cm−1,the pH value varied from 4.06 to 4.80 and the water activity content varied from 0.55 to 0.57. Significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) were found between HMF and fructose, glucose and saccharose and conductivity and pH, significant differences (P ≤ 0.01) between fructose and glucose and significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) were found between HMF and conductivity. Between blossom honey and honeydew honey were found statistical significant differences in HMF (P ≤ 0.05) and conductivity between honeydew honey and blossom honey (P ≤ 0.001). Among regions were determined statistical differences between HMF and invertase (P ≤ 0.05) and conductivity (P ≤ 0.01).

1. Examination of the composition of hay grown in the east of Scotland during the 4-year period 1948–51 has confirmed earlier work indicating the low protein content of this material. In addition, the digestibility of the protein was found to be low, particularly in the case of the seeds-hays, most of which contained insufficient digestible protein to balance the starch equivalent in meeting the maintenance requirements of cattle.2. In nutritive value the seeds -hays were markedly inferior to samples from England and Wales examined by other workers, but very similar to mature ryegrass hay grown in Northern Ireland. The meadow hays examined were of similar starch equivalent but somewhat richer in protein, and this was associated with a higher digestibility of the protein; in consequence the ratio between digestible protein and starch equivalent was more nearly balanced for the maintenance feeding of cattle.3. Applications of sodium nitrate or ‘Nitrochalk’ about 10–20 days before mowing produced very variable responses in the unusually dry season of 1949, but in other years significant increases in protein content were almost invariably obtained. Low protein seeds-hays of the type commonly found in the Lothians were more responsive to this fertilizer treatment than timothy meadow hay, and while increases in protein content of 20–30% were commonly obtained, when relatively heavy dressings of fertilizer (3 cwt. or more per acre) were used, increases in the region of 50% were sometimes recorded. In most years treatment about 10 days before mowing was fully effective in improving the protein content of the hay. Earlier treatment may be preferable in a very dry season, but in more normal years this may increase the yield of the hay and so diminish the effect on protein percentage.

The development of the yield and nutritive value of timothy (Phleum pratense L.) both in the primary growth and in the regrowth were studied at MTT Plant Production Research, a unit of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, in Rovaniemi (66°35´N) in 1999–2001. The dry matter yield and leaf:stem ratio were measured from the crop samples, and the contents of crude protein and organic matter digestibility of both whole plant samples and leaf and stem fractions were analysed. In primary growth, the most rapid increase of dry matter, 220–240 kg ha-1 per day, was measured around the beginning of the heading stage. There was a very strong positive correlation between the proportion of stems and the amount of dry matter in the primary yield. The daily growth rate of the regrowth was less than half of that of the primary growth. The fastest decrease, 1 percentage unit per day, in crude protein content was measured at the pasture stage (4–5-leaf stage). During the entire sampling period, the average daily decline in crude protein content in the primary growth of timothy was 0.65 percentage units. The main cause for the rapid decline in crude protein content was the high proportion of stem matter and its low protein content. In the regrowth, during the last four weeks before the harvest, the average daily decline in crude protein content was 0.28 percentage units.The average decline in organic matter digestibility from early pasture stage to late silage stage was 0.9 percentage units per day. The most remarkable change was noticed at the growth stage of timothy when about the half of stems were heading and it was then that the digestibility decreased by more than one percentage unit per day. The rapid decline in organic matter digestibility was due to the low digestibility of stem matter. The daily change in forage digestibility in the regrowth was very small, on average 0.11%.;

Medicago sativa or alfalfa is a flowering plant that belongs to Pea Family that is widely grown throughout the world as forage for cattle, and is most often harvested as hay. Usually, alfalfa has the highest nutritive value of all common hay crops. This work aims to highlight a way for direct, non-destructive analysis of crude protein content in alfalfa hays. The primary objective was to build a model for crude protein calibration for alfalfa based on FT-NIR spectroscopy. The samples for analysis were collected over two experimental years (2008-2009) from field trials from the research station– Agricultural Development, Cojocna. In order to construct the model, reference values are needed; for this reason, the crude protein content was determined using the classical Kjeldahl method (Kjeltec Auto Analyser, Tecator). The values for crude protein ranged from 12.63% to 19.12% on the dry matter basis. The regression model’s construction was based on Partial Least Squares (PLS) calculated with the SIMPLS algorithm, using different pre-processing techniques and leave-one-out cross validation. Calibration of the two years together drove to a coefficient of determination for cross validation, R2 of 0.965. The robustness of the model was confirmed by applying it to independent samples (external validation) where the coefficient of determination was R2 = 0.977, RMSEP = 0.8. The results obtained indicated that NIRS can be used to determine crude protein, which could be used as criteria for quality control of alfalfa hays.

AbstractGut-expressed aphid genes, which may be more easily inhibited by RNA interference (RNAi) constructs, are attractive targets for pest control efforts involving transgenic plants. Here we show that expression of cathepsin L, a cysteine protease that functions in aphid guts, can be reduced by expression of an RNAi construct in transgenic tobacco. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by up to 80% adult mortality, reduced fecundity, and delayed nymph production of Myzus persicae (green peach aphids) when cathepsin L expression was reduced by plant-mediated RNAi. Consistent with the function of cathepsin L as a gut protease, M. persicae fed on the RNAi plants had a lower protein content in their bodies and excreted more protein in their honeydew. Larvae of Coccinella septempunctata (seven-spotted ladybugs) grew more slowly on aphids having reduced cathepsin L expression, suggesting that prey insect nutritive value, and not just direct negative effects of the RNAi construct, needs to be considered when producing transgenic plants for RNAi-mediated pest control.HighlightsSilencing expression of cathepsin L by RNA interference reduces protein content of Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) bodies.Honeydew of aphids with cathepsin L silenced contains elevated protein.Cathepsin L is required for efficient protein uptake from phloem sap.Aphids with cathepsin L expression silenced have increased mortality and fewer offspring.Coccinella septempunctata (seven-spotted ladybugs) grow more slowly on aphids with expression of cathepsin L silenced.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen sources and rates on the physicochemical characteristics and yield of tomato plants. Forty hybrids were cultivated at 100 and 400 kg ha-1 of N, combined with four sources (urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and calcium), plus a treatment without N application in a randomized complete block design four replicates. Size, stem diameter, number of leaves, SPAD (Soil Plant Analysis Development), leaf nitrogen, number of fruits / plants, fruit firmness, bark thickness and average fruit size, ° BRIX, pH, calcium, potassium and sodium in fruits. There was an increase in SPAD index, Brix and longitudinal diameter of fruits as a function of the N dose. The use of ammonium nitrate and calcium provided stronger fruits. Urea and ammonium nitrate provided the highest pH value in tomato fruits. The application of the 100 kg ha-1 dose of N resulted in the highest potassium content in fruits. The highest productivity was obtained with the application of sources containing ammonium and the lowest in the control treatment. Sources and doses of nitrogen fertilizers influenced growth, productivity and parameters related to tomato quality.

AbstractUse of antibiotics as feed additives has been reduced to avoid the hazard of drug residues, and consequently, the search for alternative natural additives has developed. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the influence of royal jelly (RJ) supplementation on milk composition, blood biochemical and antioxidant parameters of lactating ewes. Thirty-six Ossimi ewes were divided randomly into two groups (18 animals each). For a period of 4 weeks, the control group (CON) was fed a basal diet only, while the other group was fed the basal diet and supplemented with a single bolus of RJ (1000 mg/head). The RJ-supplemented ewes produced significantly higher milk protein, fat and total solids than the CON group. The RJ group had a significantly higher red blood cell count, haemoglobin content, haematocrit value and total leucocyte counts, but lower neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio when compared with the control treatment. The RJ group showed significantly higher concentrations of total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione in the serum compared with the control treatment. In conclusion, RJ supplements can improve the nutritive value of milk fat and the serum antioxidant activities in lactating ewes.

AbstractQueenless, caged, newly emerged worker bees (Apis mellifera L.) were fed honey, 22 and 40% pollen in honey, and 22 and 40% royal jelly in honey for 14 days. Workers fed royal jelly, pollen, and honey had large, medium, and small ovaries, respectively. Royal jelly had higher nutritive value for workers’ ovarian development than did pollen, possibly because royal jelly is predigested by nurse bees and easily used by adult and larval bees. These results suggest that nurse bees could mediate workers’ ovarian development in colonies via trophallactic exchange of royal jelly. Six levels of royal jelly in honey, 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% (royal jelly without honey), were tested for their effects on workers’ ovarian development and mortality for 10 days. High levels of royal jelly increased ovarian development, but also increased worker mortality. All caged bees treated with 100% royal jelly died within 3 days. When workers were incubated at 20, 27, and 34 °C for 10 days, only bees at 34 °C developed ovaries. These findings suggest that nurse bees functioning as units which digest pollen and produce royal jelly may feed some potentially egg-laying workers in a brood chamber with royal jelly when a queen is lost in a colony. Feeding workers a diet of 50% royal jelly in honey and incubating at 34 °C for 10 days is recommended for tests of ovarian development.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Patilo is one of traditional various snacks from Gunung Kidul that is made of fermented cassava waste and cassava starch. Fermentation is intended to reduce or eliminate the HCN content of cassava and to establish special flavour. The protein content of patilo is very low, therefore it can be enriched with animal protein from fresh water fish in form of fish flour or fish protein hydrolysate (FPH). Enrichment with fish protein hydrolysate has an advantage since it will be easier to digest by human because FPH better functional properties and higher solubility.Method: The study consisted of four activities that were 1) making/producing mujair FPH, 2) producing and enriched patilo with mujair FPH, 3) analyzed the nutritive values and protein digestibility of enriched and unenriched patilo and 4) analyzed the consumers acceptability of the products. The experiments were carried out in the 1) Food Engineering and Chemistry Laboratorium of Faculty of Agriculture Technology Semarang University, 2) Pilot Plan PAU and GMSK Laboratory of Bogor Institute of Agriculture, 3) Sidoardjo Village, Tepus Gunung Kidul. Variables being studied were nutritive value and protein digestibility of unenriched and enriched patilo with mujair FPH in several consumer acceptability in terms of flavour, taste, colour and texture. The study design was a complete random design of one factor in which the FPH was added in 5%, 10% and 15% concentration, each treatment repeated 3 times. Statistical analyses used for nutritive value and protein digestibility were Anova followed by Least Significant Difference test with 0,05 level of significancy Friedman and Wilcoxon Sign Rank test were used to test the organoleptic values both in the laboratory and in the field. Result:1) The nutritive value changes of raw enriched patilo were : a) significant decrease in water and carbohydrate content, b) significant increase in ash, fat and protein content compared to the unenriched patilo, 2) The nutritive value change of fried enriched patilo were : a) significant decrease in water and carbohydrate content, b) significant increase in fat, protein and energy content compared to the unenriched patilo, 3) The protein digestibility in raw and fried enriched patilo was significant higher than that without enrichement, 4) Patilo enriched with 10% mujair FPH was mostly liked by consumer either in the laboratory or in the field in term of taste, flavour and texture as for colour, all consumers prefered the unenriched patilo, 5) The changes of the nutritive values and protein digestibility were statistically significant in the enriched patilo, however from the nutrition point of view, only the increased of protein content (six folds increase) was meaningful. Conclusion: Patilo enriched with 10% mujair FPH is the most/well accepted by laboratory panelists and field consumers, and there was six folds increase in the protein content.   Key Word: Patilo, enrichment and fish protein hydrolysate.
