AbstractRecent studies have shown what indispensable role mobile phones play as means of mobilization in contentious politics around the world. Nevertheless, there has been no clear elaboration of how mobile phone uses translate into mobilization in contentious politics. To fill this gap, the current study employs Passy’s (2003) framework of the threefold function of social ties as channels of mobilization to examine how mobile communication, embedding the dynamics of social ties, influences protest mobilization. It investigates two cases in rural and urban China in which Chinese people employed their mobile phones to mobilize participants for protests, and conducts 24 in-depth interviews with participants in these protests. Findings suggest that using mobile phones for mobilization registers the relational dynamics of social ties, which shapes participants’ perceptions of given protest issues, ensures the safety of protest recruitment and mobilization in a repressive context, and generates pressure on participation, all of which contributes to the mechanism of mobilization. This study concludes with the concept of ‘relational mobilization’, which addresses the embedment and relevance of social ties in the process of mobile-phone-mediated mobilization and its implication for Asian countries.

This study aims to find a structured city branding model of Poncokusumo District of Malang Regency as a tourism village area in Malang Regency by using aspects / dimensions of city branding  by Kavaratzis (2004). This analysis is carried out in 2 stages, namely primary communication and secondary communication. The point of view in this study uses the point of view of communication which views a brand as part of public relations. Researchers used qualitative descriptive methods with data collection techniques, in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The informant selection technique uses a purposive sampling technique while the data analysis technique uses Miles & Huberman, consist of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification and data validity using source triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the structured city branding model through the Kavaratzis city branding concept conducted by the Malang District Culture and Tourism Office has not yet been found. This is because the Malang District Culture and Tourism Office has not yet developed an effective primary communication where the official as the program owner can clearly communicate the concept of a tourism village and its development. Secondary communication in the development of Poncokusumo Subdistrict as a tourist village area experienced a problem, which is the absence of special publications by the Culture and Tourism Office of Malang Regency, so that the popularity of Poncokusumo Subdistrict as a tourist village area could not reach the Top of Mind. The Poncokusumo District Brand as a tourist village area is less known because there is no special event that lifts the tourism village and the publication is less so that Poncokusumo District as a tourist village area is less known by the public. Keywords: City Branding, Poncokusumo, Tourism Village

Remanufacturing is deemed to be effective in reducing WEEE. Existing studies on remanufacturing mostly focus on operational issues, product acquisition, and pricing. However, some doubts about remanufacturing business arise in developing countries, where there is less regulation on remanufacturing and less environmental awareness. This study aims to investigate the prospects of remanufacturing business from the retailers' perspectives through in-depth interviews on three retailers in Surabaya, Indonesia. The main drivers for mobile phone remanufacturing business are its affordable and competitive price, big demand for popular mobile phones and high-end mobile phone, the opportunity for specification upgrade, and its suitability with the needs of Indonesian people. The main barriers for remanufacturing business are the possibility for cannibalizing new mobile phones' market share, the uncertainty of core supply, discontinuity of replacement part supply, lack of product knowledge among consumers and retailers, hesitation of retailers to sell remanufactured products, and lack of strict and clear regulations about remanufacturing business. Findings of this study provide insights to prospective mobile phone remanufacturers of what needs to be tackled to start a prosperous business. On the theoretical side, it provides complementary knowledge to existing studies that have been conducted mostly on countries that have higher environmental awareness.

This research aims at developing an empirical model to explore the factors that influence consumers’ use of mobile phones as converged devices. The use of mobile phones as converged devices refers to the utility of the various functions and services embedded in mobile phones, such as PIM, e-mail, entertainment, and commerce. The exploratory work draws from in-depth interviews and theories to identify some of the critical factors that drive consumer to use a mobile phone for various functions. The interview data was transcribe and analysed to construct a model. The finding shows that although Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and other studies on mobile phones have been used to explain consumers’ adoption of different information technologies, they need further enrichment when applied to multi-functional (or converged) technologies and dynamic use contexts. Therefore, the result provides a significant step towards a better understanding of consumer behaviour in the context of technology convergence.
