We analyze the process of appearance and approval of orphanhood motive in V. Astafyev’s work. We substantiate its connection with autobiographical episodes from the prosaist’s life. The purpose of work: to prove the idea of origin and institutionalization in V. Astafyev’s prose of a character’s special type through emphasizing the motive of orphanhood. The relevance of the study is due to the inexhaustible interest in the prosaist’s unique work on the part of criticism, literary studies, reading community. Based on the stories material of the turn of 1950–1960s (“Pass”, “Starodub”, “Starfall”, “Theft”, “Last Tribute”) we establish the typological similarity of Astafyev’s characters both among themselves and with the characters of Russian literature classics (N.M. Karamzin, A.I. Kuprin, M.M. Prishvin). We argue the idea of fundamental commonality of Astafyev’s character-orphan with the type of “natural”, “untutored” person. We express and prove the assumption that this community, among other things, is the result of V. Astafyev’s reflections on the social and ethical problems that concern him: the spiritual and moral loneliness of a modern person, the loss of ethical and social ties between generations, a consumer attitude to nature, a separation from origins. We find a deep connection between the actualization of the orphanhood topic in the prosaist’s work and the large-scale social cataclysms of the twentieth century (military conflicts, socio-political upheavals, urbanization, disintegration of the traditional village, corrosion of once stable family values).

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community-based organizations (CBO’s) are key players in providing many services such as job training programs and civic education. The focus of community development has changed due to the increased technical and professional industry. Today’s AAPI CBO groups are heterogeneous as many groups focus in different services whether it is ethnic specific or age group specific. However, the CBOs are unevenly spread across the country. AAPI need to work on expanding its system-wide support on the local, state, and federal levels. The article discusses a social networks approach to aid in CBOs goals and the social capital approach, remarking that social ties are crucial for the well-being of the community. The term ‘community’ is explored as it means different things to different people, and the problem of lumping diverse ethnicities within the Asian American group because it homogenizes them and fails to distinguish a particular group’s concern. The vital aspect is to create community development infrastructure ensuring the inclusion of AAPI CBOs to foster strong AAPI communities, as an essential program in the broader plan of reviving US neighborhoods.

Within 40 years, J. D. Bernal’s radical commentary on ‘the social function of science’ has become the conventional wisdom of public science policy. It is now commonplace that science should be organized and financed on a large scale, and directed towards societal goals. This policy also includes basic research, which needs financial support for expensive apparatus. Science is thus being transformed from an individualistic community into a homogeneous collective enterprise, which now covers all types of research from the academic to the technological. The modern ‘R & D system’ is undoubtedly beneficial to society, and to the advancement of knowledge. But collectivization has not only changed the societal function of science; it has also changed its internal sociology. Personal discretion in the choice of research problems is now severely limited, even in the university sector, because most projects are now funded by outside agencies. Tension between the individualist norms of the academic tradition and managerial principles derived from the industrial tradition has made research an ambivalent profession. Should scientists be regarded as members of a transnational community devoted to ‘the search for truth’, or are they simply typical employees of governmental and commercial organizations with very worldly aims? This ambivalence is evident in controversies over scientific freedom and responsibility, and in the ethical problems of military research.

Area coverage of large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs) (LSMPAs, > 100,000 km2) is rapidly increasing globally. Their effectiveness largely depends on successful detection and management of non-compliance. However, for LSMPAs this can be difficult due to their large size, often remote locations and a lack of understanding of the social drivers of non-compliance. Taking a case-study approach, we review current knowledge of illegal fishing within the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) LSMPA. Data stemming from enforcement reports (2010–20), and from fieldwork in fishing communities (2018–19) were combined to explore and characterise drivers of non-compliance. Enforcement data included vessel investigation reports (n = 188), transcripts of arrests (20) and catch seizures (58). Fieldwork data included fisher interviews (95) and focus groups (12), conducted in two communities in Sri Lanka previously associated with non-compliance in BIOT LSMPA. From 2010 to 2020, there were 126 vessels suspected of non-compliance, 76% of which were Sri Lankan. The majority of non-compliant vessels targeted sharks (97%), catching an estimated 14,340 individuals during the study period. Sri Lankan vessels were primarily registered to one district (77%) and 85% operated from just two ports within the fieldwork sites. Social Network Analysis (SNA) showed that 66% of non-compliant vessels were linked by social ties, including sharing crew members, compared with only 34% of compliant vessels. Thematic analysis of qualitative data suggested that perceptions of higher populations of sharks and social ties between vessels may both be important drivers. We discuss our findings within a global context to identify potential solutions for LSMPA management.

Re-creating the social, economic and demographic life-cycles of ordinary people is one way in which historians might engage with the complex continuities and changes which underlay the development of early modern communities. Little, however, has been written on the ways in which historians might deploy computers, rather than card indexes, to the task of identifying such life cycles from the jumble of the sources generated by local and national administration. This article suggests that multiple-source linkage is central to historical and demographic analysis, and reviews, in broad outline, some of the procedures adopted in a study which aims at large scale life cycle reconstruction.

FQ books editor Carla Marcantonio guides readers through the 33rd edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival held each year in Bologna at the end of June. Highlights of this year's festival included a restoration of one of Vittorio De Sica's hard-to-find and hence lesser-known films, the social justice fairy tale, Miracolo a Milano (Miracle in Milan, 1951). The film was presented by De Sica's daughter, Emi De Sica, and was an example of the ongoing project to restore De Sica's archive, which was given to the Cineteca de Bologna in 2016. Marcantonio also notes her unexpected responses to certain reviewings; Apocalypse Now: Final Cut (2019), presented by Francis Ford Coppola on the large-scale screen of Piazza Maggiore and accompanied by remastered Dolby Atmos sound, struck her as a tour-de-force while a restoration of David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986) had lost some of its strange allure.

In her analysis of books by Maya Kucherskaya, Olesya Nikolaeva, and Yulia Voznesenskaya, the author investigates the history of female Christian prose from the 1990s until the present day. According to the author, it was in the 1990s, the period of crisis and transformation of the social system, that female Christian writers were more vocal, than today, on the issues of the new post-Soviet female subjectivity, drawing on folklore imagery and contrasting the folk, pagan philosophy with the Christian one, defined by an established set of rules and limitations for the principal female roles. Thus, the folklore elements in Kucherskaya’s early works are considered as an attempt to represent female subjectivity. However, the author argues that, in their current work, Kucherskaya and other representatives of the so-called female Christian prose tend to choose different, objectivizing methods to represent female characters. This new and conservative approach may have come from a wider social context, including the state-imposed ‘family values’ program.

Накопленный исторический опыт реализации принятых управленческих решений актуален и востребован в настоящее время. the article substantiates the objective need to change the management system of military education in the framework of military reform in the second half of the XIX century. The events were based on the achievements of Russian pedagogical thought and military pedagogy. It is emphasized that the complex of management decisions was theoretically justified, carried out consistently and progressively, until the necessary positive result was achieved. It would be impossible to solve these large–scale and complex tasks of optimizing the process of military education without increasing attention to the social and humanitarian disciplines taught in military educational institutions. The accumulated historical experience of implementing management decisions is relevant and may be in demand at the present time.
