[English]: This qualitative study with phenomenology design aims to investigate the use of backing and its relation to rebuttal and qualifier in prospective mathematics teachers’ (PMTs) argumentation when constructing a mathematical proof about algebraic function. The data were collected through subjects' works on the proof, recorded think-aloud data, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was guided by Toulmin’s argumentation scheme. The results show that the PMTs used three types of backing, i.e., backing in the form of definitions or theorems (reference backing), examples of numbers (numerical backing) and graphs of functions (graphical backing). The PMTs utilized the backings to strengthen deductive and inductive warrant. A numerical backing is used when a warrant cannot justify the truth of a claim. Graphical backing is used to convince oneself about the truth of the data that has been made while the reference backing is only clarification when students have understood or have knowledge of the statement given. Numerical and graphical backing relate directly to rebuttal and provide counter-examples and qualifier of the claim. A numerical backing makes students more confident about claims that are generated compared to reference backing.

The ability to prove formal mathematics is an important ability that must be mastered by undergraduate prospective mathematics teachers. However, students who are prospective mathematics teachers have difficulty in constructing proof in mathematics courses. Therefore, this study aims to explore the tendency of mathematical proof methods for prospective mathematics teachers in second year lectures. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive research. Participants in this study were 30 prospective mathematics teachers at a tertiary institution in Tuban, East Java. The research instrument is a simple task of compiling mathematical evidence. The results of the study were analyzed using the classification of types of proof by Miyazaki, namely classifying the types of deductive and inductive reasoning. The results showed that prospective mathematics teachers had a greater tendency to use deductive reasoning than using inductive reasoning. Type A proof is the most common type of proof. In addition, around 70% of prospective teachers still experience difficulties in compiling evidentiary tasks.

Abstract Objectives: To analyze how older adults conceptualize these intergenerational relationships. Methods: In this qualitative study, in-depth interviews were carried out with 316 older adults, aged 65-102, from three different nationalities who lived at home. Verbatim transcripts were examined. Results: Data analysis generated six themes representing intergenerational relationships: affection and reward; interest and integration; grandparent-grandchild interaction quality; privacy and boundaries definition; provision of support; and obligation of providing childcare, on two dimensions of ambivalence concerning their intergenerational relationships (supportive and conflictual). Conclusions: The empirical findings from this research indicate how ambivalence in intergenerational relationships is experienced by older adults and stress the contradictory expectations of older adults with grandchildren. Keywords: Ambivalence; conflict; intergenerational relationships; older adults; support.

Although the title of this book implies a target audience of math-anxious people, it is equally, if not more, suitable for teachers of mathematics and mathematics educators. Do You Panic about Maths? Coping with Maths Anxiety attempts to build a model of the interaction between reason and emotion to explain the behavior of adults anxious about mathematics. The model was derived from a qualitative study of adults that had three components: hour-long interviews with two dozen people; 36 2-hour sessions with a group of four women and three men; and individual in-depth interviews, consisting of 12 or 24 sessions, with three women. Buxton relates his model to the work of Skemp, with whom he has collaborated. Indeed, he has extended Skemp's (1979) model of intelligence in this book. In addition to the theoretical framework he discusses, Buxton provides some ideas for coping with one's mathematics anxiety and gives suggestions for mathematics teachers about how to teach to avoid or combat students' anxiety.
