Background: Leprosy is a neglected tropical disease caused by chronic granulomatous infection of Mycobacterium leprae. Indonesia ranks third in new case findings, with 84% of the case being multibacillary (MB) leprosy. MB leprosy cases have a higher risk of leprosy reactions and physical disabilities that decrease quality of life. Purpose: To determine the demographic, clinical characteristics, and white blood analysis of newly diagnosed MB leprosy patients, especially concerning leprosy reactions. Methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study with a cross-sectional design that describe the following data: domicile, gender, age, treatment status, disabilities, body mass index (BMI); bacterial index (BI), morphological index (MI), white blood cell (WBC) and differential counts, and thrombocyte count. Result: This study included 176 adult MB cases, predominantly male aged 20–39 years old with average BMI, lived in Surabaya with negative history of multi-drug therapy, disability, BI, nor MI. The grade 2 disability (G2D) percentage in this study setting than in Indonesia (10.7% vs. 6.43%). The WBCs, especially neutrophil count, was higher in T2R group. Monocyte and lymphocyte counts were relatively similar. There was an increase in thrombocyte count in leprosy reaction groups. Conclusion: MB leprosy in the endemic area, which is more commonly found in productive-aged male, displayed higher G2D than global Indonesia population. Thus denotes the importance of active case findings. The difference in blood analysis characteristics between MB leprosy with and without reactions may serve as the foundation for future study.

Abstract. In the growth of microorganisms such as fungi, it is necessary to grow a medium that can provide nutrients and as an energy source. Other alternative carbohydrate sources include potatoes, breadfruit, sago, and cassava, which is a distinctive and easy to find food companion. This type of research is descriptive with cross sectional design that aims to determine the difference in alternative media variation from various sources of carbohydrate to Candida albicans. The samples were then made to be the treatment for the creation of alternative media from various carbohydrate sources that further carried out the growth test against Candida albicans. The results of the study are the average growth of colonies on alternative media from Potato carbide sources, namely 655 colonies, breadfruit 1380 colonies, cassava 862 colonies, 372 sago colonies, and semi-synthetic media as a control of 874 colonies. This indicates there is growth of Candida albicans on all alternative media so that it can be used as an alternative medium of fungi growth, as well as the best growth of Candida albicans found in the media Breadfruit Dextrose Agar. Abstract Objective Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are energy sources needed by the body for performing daily activities and generating primary energy substances. In women who have undergone menopause, the function of thyroid hormone in their body begins to decline and thus affects the ability of the body to produce energy. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between the intakes of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats and random blood sugar levels in menopausal women. Methods This study was a correlational analytical research with a cross-sectional design, which was conducted in 72 menopausal women recruited by the purposive sampling technique. In this study, a 24-hour food recall form was used, and randomized blood sugar levels were measured using a glucometer. The analysis of the data was performed using a Pearson product moment and multiple linear regression. Results Carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels with an F-value of 25.810 and a p-value of 0.000. Meanwhile, adjusted R2 showed the value of 0.411, indicating that the difference in the intake of carbohydrates and fats together affected random blood sugar levels by 41.1%. Conclusions Intake of carbohydrates and fats affected random blood sugar levels, whereas the rest were influenced by other factors, and protein intake was unrelated to random blood sugar levels in menopausal women.

Background Thrombocyte and endothelial cells play animportant role in dengue hemorrhagic fever pathogenesis.Thrombomodulin is a part of glycoprotein membrane inendothelial cells. Therefore, thrombomodulin level willincrease if endothelial cells disruption occurs. Objective To acknowledge the correlation between thedegree of dengue hemorrhagic fever and thrombomodulinlevel. Methods This was a cross-sectional study. Subjects werehospitalized pediatric patients with age ranging from oneto 13 year old in pediatric ward at Pro£ Dr. R.D. KandouHospital, Manado, who had fever. Three milliliters of bloodwere taken from vein, and were divided for two tests whichwere routine blood analysis and thrombomodulin analysis.Different data resulted from the dengue hemorrhagic fevergroup were processed, and analyzed statistically using F Testand LSD (least significant difference) test. The relationbetween dengue hemorrhagic fever and thrombomodulinwas analyzed with Spearman correlation coefficient. Results There was a significant result in the difference ofthrombomodulin level on four dengue hemorrhagic fevergroups which were classified according to the severity ofdengue hemorrhagic fever. There was a very significantpositive correlation between the severity of denguehemorrhagic fever and thrombomodulin level in detectingendothelial cells impairment. Conclusion Thrombomodulin level can be used as amarker to detect endothelial cells impairment in denguehemorrhagic fever. Higher grade of dengue hemorrhagicfever will have higher thrombomodulin level.

Background. Knowledge regarding the relationship between writing kinetics and the difference among writing tasks is limited. Purpose. This study examined the differences in handwriting performance when doing tasks with different levels of challenge from both temporal and kinetic perspectives among children in four different age groups. Method. The cross-sectional design introduced a force-acquisition pen to detect differences of pen grip and writing kinetics among 170 school-age children doing writing tasks at different difficulty levels. Data were obtained on the force information of the digits and pen tip and the kinetic parameters to examine the coordination-and-control mechanism between the digits and pen. Statistical analyzes were carried out to indicate the differences in writing performance among groups and tasks. Findings. Statistical differences in the pen-grip forces, force fluctuation, and force ratio between grip and pen-tip forces were found when performing different writing tasks and among different age groups. Implications. The study provides an alternative method to explore how writing performance among school-age children can vary according to the difficulty of the writing tasks.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of malaria and its relationship with the ABO blood group and genotype at the University of Nigeria Medical Centre. Methods: The study had a prospective cross-sectional design in which malaria status and blood groups and genotype were determined. All collected data were analysed using Statistical product and services Solution (V.21). Frequencies and percentages were used to describe the data while Chi-square and Pearson correlation were used to determine associations between malaria prevalence and patients’ demographic and clinical characteristics. Statistical significance was considered for p<0.05. Results: Three hundred and twenty-three (323) patients were tested for malaria, 245(75.9%) of whom tested positive. The prevalence was highest for patient’s aged 19-25 y (28.5%). The difference was statistically significant for age: χ2 (5) = 33.60, p = 0.0005. There were more blood group O (57.6%) among the patients, while AA genotype was the majority (72.4%). Those with blood group O had the highest prevalence of malaria (33.7%) and it was statistically significant (χ2 (3) = 72.10, p = 0.0005)). Correlation showed that the association between blood group and malaria prevalence was moderate (R = 0.457). The AA genotype had more incidence of malaria (54.5%), but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The prevalence of malaria was high among the patients surveyed. Its association with the patients’ ABO blood group was established to be statistically significant, with blood group O having the highest incidence. Although AA genotype was observed to have the highest cases of malaria, the relationship was found not to be significant.

Background. Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that presents with varying dermatological and neurological symptoms. The leprosy reactions occur over the chronic course of the disease and lead to extensive disability and morbidity.Objective. To analyze and identify the risk factors which contribute to leprosy reactions.Methods. In a retrospective study, we reviewed the medical records of leprosy patients registered at the leprosy clinic, Ramathibodi Hospital, Thailand, between March 1995 and April 2015. One hundred and eight patients were included; descriptive analysis was used for baseline characteristics and a binary logistic regression model was applied for identifying risk factors correlated with leprosy reactions.Results. Of the 108 cases analyzed, 51 were male and 57 were female. The mean age of presentation was 45 years. The borderline tuberculoid type was the most common clinical form. Leprosy reactions were documented in 61 cases (56.5%). The average time to reaction was 8.9 months. From multivariate analysis, risk factors for leprosy reactions were being female, positive bacillary index status, and MB treatment regimen.Conclusions. Leprosy reactions are common complications in leprosy patients. Being female, positive bacillary index status, and multibacillary treatment regimen are significantly associated with the reactions. Early detection in cases with risk factors followed by appropriate treatment could prevent the morbidity of leprosy patients.
