The objective of this work was to evaluate the productive performance of broccoli under different top-dressing organic fertilizations. The experiment was conducted under protected cultivation, in a completely randomized design with four replications, with two plants per experimental unit. Broccoli seedlings were produced in a commercial substrate in styrofoam trays. The seedlings were transplanted to plastic pots containing 10.0 L of substrate made up of subsoil and organic compost at the ratio of 3:1 (v/v), respectively, which is equivalent to about 20.0 t ha-1 of organic compost at planting. After seedling establishment, the top-dressing fertilization treatments were applied: gliricidia biomass associated or not with liquid biofertilizer of cattle manure to the soil and bokashi. Two control treatments were established: one with mineral fertilization recommended for the crop and the other without top-dressing fertilization. The broccoli production was evaluated (commercial standard). Plants that received mineral fertilizer were more productive, however, they were not significantly different (p>0.05), by Dunnet test, from the plants fertilized with 2.5 t ha-1 gliricidiabiomass (dry mass) associated with liquid biofertilizer (2.0 L m-2) applied to soil. Top-dressing fertilizations with only gliricidia, at 2.5 and 5.0 t ha-1 of biomass (dry mass), resulted in no significant increase in production of broccoli inflorescence. The use of bokashi in addition to gliricidia biomass and liquid biofertilizer reduced the efficiency of the fertilization compared with plants that received only gliricidia and liquid biofertilizer.

[EFFECT OF CONCENTRATION AND APPLICATION TIME OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER LIQUID BANANA PEELS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF JAVA TEA (Orthosiphon aristatus)]. Java tea are medicinal plants that have many health benefits but java tea production is very low. Efforts are made to increase the growth and yield of java tea, namely the use of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) banana peels. This study aims to obtain concentration, application time of LOF banana peels, and interactions between the two that produce high growth and yield of java tea. The study was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 in the city of Bengkulu. The experiments were arranged based on a completely randomized design factorial pattern. The first factor is the LOF concentration of banana peels 25 mL/L, 50 mL/L, 75 mL/L, and 100 mL/L. The second factor is the time of LOF application which consists of 1 week application, 2 weeks application, and 3 weeks application. The results showed that independently giving concentration and application time and interaction did not significantly influence the variable thickness of leaves, total leaf area, shoot length, number of leaves, fresh plant weight, root length, and dry plant weight.

Thirty (30) growing rabbits of mixed breeds and sexes with an average initial weight of 526.92±0.25g  ere used for this study to determine the effect of level of inclusion of Ziziphus leaf meal (ZLM) in concentrate diet on the performance of growing rabbits. The experiment was in a completely randomized design involving five treatments, which represented five diets with 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40% levels of ZLM inclusion. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in weight gains, feed intake and feed:gain ratios. Treatment 2 had the highest weight gain (though not significantly different (p>0.05) from treatment 1 and the best feed /gain values. The cost benefit analysis shows a 40.51 % reduction in the cost of feed, following a 10 % inclusion of ZLM in the diet (T2) over the control (T1), while 46.35 and 47.94 % reduction were observed following 20 and 30 % ZLM inclusion (T3 and T4) respectively. In term of apparent profit made, T1 recorded the highest profit (N 35.29) over all other treatments, which was followed by T2 (N30.49), T3 (N15.11) and T4 recorded the least (N 12.99). Inclusion of RHSM in the diet of rabbits resulted in reduction in the cost of feed and feed cost efficiency. From the results obtained it was concluded that  dried ZLM could be incorporated up to 30% in the diets of growing rabbits without any adverse effect on their performance.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the utilization by corn plants of P from triple superphosphate fertilizer labeled with 32P (32P‑TSP), and of P from soil as affected by N rates and by the green manures (GM) sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and millet (Pennisetum glaucum). The experiment was carried out using pots filled with 5 kg Oxisol (Rhodic Hapludox). A completely randomized design was used, in a 4x4x2 factorial arrangement, with four replicates. The treatments were: four P rates as TSP (0, 0.175, 0.350, and 0.700 g P per pot); four N rates as urea (0, 0.75, 1.50, and 2.25 g N per pot); and sunn hemp or millet as green manure. The additions of N and P by the GM were taken into account. After grain physiologic maturation, corn dry matter, P contents, accumulated P, and P recovery in the different treatments were measured. 32P‑TSP recovery by corn increased with N increasing rates, and decreased with increasing rates of 32P‑TSP. The mineral fertilizer provides most of the accumulated P by corn plants. The recovery of 32P‑TSP by corn was 13.12% in average. The green manure species influence the assimilation of 32P‑TSP by the plants.

Bacterial wilt is a problematic disease affecting potato production in Kenya and the available management methods are not efficient. Field, semi-field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of canola green manure and compound fertilizer on bacterial wilt management. Laboratory experiment was conducted at Egerton university biological laboratory to evaluate the effect of canola extract on R. solanacearum population density in-vitro. Four levels of canola extract quantities were used; 0, 100, 200, 300microlitres, and enrich immunomodulator (Di-bromo Di-nitro propane 1-3-diol) (DDD) was used as a positive control. Inoculum was prepared from infested soil and Selective Medium South Africa (SMSA) (Casamino acids, Bacto-Peptone, Glycerol, and Bacto-Agar) was used as growth medium in a completely randomized design. Field experiment was carried out in two sites (Elburgon site is in Upper high land zone two (UH2) and Mau-Narok is in Upper high land zone one UH1). Two levels of canola green manure (with and without green manure application), four levels of fertilizer (NPK+Ca+Mg+ micronutrients) applied at 0(F1), 250(F2), 575(F3), 900 (F4) kg ha-1 and diammonium phosphate (DAP500 kg ha-1) +Calcium ammonium nitrate             (CAN300 kg ha-1) (F5) as a positive control. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) spilt plot replicated three times, canola green manure as main plot and fertilizer and varieties combination as sub plots. Semi-field experiment (in pots) was conducted at Egerton university farm, five levels of canola green manure (100, 75, 50 and 0 g kg-1 soil) and four levels of the compound fertilizer as used in the field experiment were used in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates. The data shows that canola extract did not have a significant (Pr <0.05) effect on bacterial population density (CFU), where chemical treatment (DDD) restricted the growth of R. solanacearum under laboratory experiment. Under field and semi-filed experiments, canola green manure and fertilizer treatments had no significant (Pr <0.05) effect on bacterial population density in the soil nor bacterial wilt incidence. Kenya karibu variety it did not show any wilting symptoms of bacterial wilt across the sites and semi-field experiment. Canola did not suppress the growth of R. solanacearum; further investigation should be done on other brassica family plants.
