ABSTRACT Judgement of what one views as good appearance in the selection of job applicants may reveal racial bias in access to the labor market. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of racism in judging physical appearance in personnel selection. The non-random sample was composed of seventy-four (74) participants, of whom forty-two were human resources professionals (57%). The instruments used were an assessment of résumés, a set of prejudice scales, an inventory of racism in the labor market, an indicator of good appearance and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Three hypotheses were tested. Hypothesis 1, which postulated a preference for white candidates was confirmed. Hypothesis 2 was corroborated, because the professionals showed a higher tendency to choose candidates with a fairer complexion. Hypothesis 3, which made reference to good appearance was rejected, because the participants elected hygiene as a further element present in the judgment in selecting candidates. Finally, it is considered that the selection process should be based on the acceptance of racial diversity, a key element for the development of creative and innovative organizations.

The selection of outstanding students is an appreciation given by the boarding school to the students who have the highest scores. However, the election is usually still done subjectively and manually, and there is no support system in creating decisions, which make the selection process long and inaccurate. This study aims to implement a decision support system in determining outstanding students at Mamba'ussholihin Islamic Boarding School predetermined with criteria. The process of selecting uses the method Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for weighting criteria and Operational Competitiveness Rating Analysis (OCRA) for ranking. The OCRA value obtained is in the form of Pi, which is ranked to get the best students. The findings show that the error consistency level is less than 10% and the consistency index value is accepted, so that it can be used as an initial weight with a relative number = 1. After calculating the OCRA method from the initial 75 alternative data, the top 10 alternative data obtained are in the form of the value of Pi will be entitled to an award as an outstanding student, so by applying these two methods it can speed up the results of the decision, it does not take a long time and the results obtained are also precise.

Islamic boarding schools are religious institutions that provide education and teaching and develop and spread Islam. As an institution, Islamic boarding schools have many activities in them. In each activity requires an organizational structure to manage activities so that they are carried out properly. The process of selecting the person in charge is generally directly chosen by the board but this has both positive and negative sides. The positive side shortens the time in the election because there is no selection in determining the person responsible. The negative side of the direct appointment process is that it cannot see the abilities possessed by the candidates in charge of leadership, organization, and so on. This can only be known with the selection process, what often happens is the selection of the person in charge who does not have the appropriate ability. Under these circumstances, we need a system that can help boarding school administrators in facilitating the selection and appointment of the person in charge. In this study, profile matching is used to calculate the compatibility of the profile of the work and the profile of the person in charge. Each person in charge who is sought has each criterion consisting of core factors and secondary factors. The results obtained from this study are decision support systems that produce responsible recommendations in accordance with the criteria for each activity in the boarding school.

A central challenge in qualitative research is selecting the “negative” cases (e.g., nonrevolutions, nonwars) to be included in analyses that seek to explain positive outcomes of interest (e.g., revolutions, wars). Although it is widely recognized that the selection of negative cases is consequential for theory testing, methodologists have yet to formulate specific rules to inform this selection process. In this paper, we propose a principle—the Possibility Principle—that provides explicit, rigorous, and theoretically informed guidelines for choosing a set of negative cases. The Possibility Principle advises researchers to select only negative cases where the outcome of interest is possible. Our discussion elaborates this principle and its implications for current debates about case selection and strategies of theory testing. Major points are illustrated with substantive examples from studies of revolution, economic growth, welfare states, and war.
