International employment standard requires higher quality of graduates, which can be achieved through high quality academic standards. As we know there are still a large number of graduates of Indonesian higher education rejected to work in global industry. Besides having low GPA, lots of graduates are considered lacking technical skills, interpersonal skills, and international experience. Indeed, the main weakness factor is the low English proficiency of graduates. We need a breakthrough that develops our academic standards of higher education to obtain international quality. Yet, there are challenges to face by the government, such as rebuilding the national system (establishing elite institutions), internationalizing higher education (globalizing the institutions or cross-border trades of education services), as well as enhancing private participation by repositioning the private sector. To overcome these challenges we need to build a strategic partnership of transnational education using online programs, which can obtain mutual benefit for the collaborating institutions. This article discusses about how to increase academic quality of graduates in Indonesia or in other Asian countries.

Reports of the past 13 years that call attention to deficient academic standards in American higher education are enumerated. Particular attention is given the Wingspread Group's recent An American Imperative: Higher Expectations for Higher Education. Low academic standards, grade inflation, and budgetary incentives for increased enrollment are analyzed and a call is made for research at the state level. Reported trends in achievement and GPAs are extrapolated to Tennessee and combined with local data to support the inference that 15% of the state's present day college graduates would not have earned a diploma by mid 1960s standards. A conspicuous lack of interest by public oversight bodies is noted despite a growing public awareness of low academic expectations and lenient grading and an implicit budgetary impact of over $100 million. Various academic policies and the dynamics of bureaucratic control are discussed in relationship to the maintenance of academic standards. The disincentives for challenging course requirements and responsible grading are examined, and the growing movement to address academic quality issues through better training and supervision of faculty are critiqued. Recommendations that would encourage renewed academic integrity and make learning outcomes visible to students, parents, employers, and the taxpaying public are offered and briefly discussed.

Abstract. In order to enhance the quality of Indonesian higher education, the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education paid much attention to lecturers in forms of financial incentives and opportunities for them to upgrade their professional skills. Meanwhile, educational laboratory assistants (educational supporting staffs with specific functional position) had also enjoyed some incentives from the government over the past 5 years. Therefore, these laboratory assistants need continuous coaching to maximise their roles in laboratories and to deliver services to their customers, such as lectures, students and other laboratory stakeholders. This study aimed at revealing to what extent effective coaching from superiors and adversity quotient owned by educational laboratory assistants influenced the quality of service of educational laboratory assistants of some Indonesian public universities. This research employed correlational quantitative approach using questionaires as data collection method. Data were analysed using regression analysis. The results of analysis indicated that there was a positive correlation between effective coaching and adversity quotient on the service quality of educational laboratory assistants of some public universities. The more effective the coaching and the higher the adversity quotient, the better quality of service of the laboratory assistants. Based on these results, it was concluded that the service quality of educational laboratory assistants could be improved through effective coaching and adversity quotient.

Islamic education during the New Order experienced a growth both quantitatively and in terms of the quality of the organization. The New Order policy in Islamic Education, for example: the government implemented Islamic religious education taught in elementary schools to higher education, madrasa institutions and pesantren began to be recognized, the provision of facilities and others. Government policies during the New Order era, although providing fresh air for the development of Islamic education, the stakeholders must fight and work hard to convince the government so that the existence of Islamic education remains recognized and has the same position with other education nationally.
