Abstract. In the present work, the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of Diplostephium phylicoides and Diplostephium revolutum on different microorganisms was carried out on using bacteria such as Escherichia coli (CMPUJ:034), Staphylococcus aureus (CMPUJ:370), Salmonella typhi (CMPUJ:045) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CMPUJ:065), yeasts such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CMPUJ:H042) and Candida albicans (CMPUJ:H022), and filamentous fungi such as Penicillium chrysogenum (CMPUJ:H061) and Aspergillus niger (CMPUJ:H002). This assessment was made by the method of plates and wells using extracts from the leaves of the previously mentioned plants. The extracts were made with different solvents, ethanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and petroleum ether. The results showed that the ethyl acetate extract of Diplostephium phylicoides has antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans; furthermore, the dichloromethane extract showed an inhibitory effect against Saccharomyces cerevisiae. When comparing the extracts of the two plants, under the evaluated conditions, the extracts presented antimicrobial activity, and the ethyl acetate extract of Diplostephium revolutum the one that showed better activity against all the microorganisms.

Cyperus rotundus, a member of family Cyperaceae is a perennial, stoloniferous herb. The study investigated the secondary metabolites present in the leaf of Cyperus rotundus and antimicrobial activities of the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, tannins, steroids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides and terpenoids. The qualitative test of the extracts show the presence of steroid only in the hexane extract; flavonoid, cardiac glycoside in both the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts; saponin and tannin and phenolics in just the methanol extract. While alkaloid was present in all the extracts, terpenoid was absent in all. Antimicrobial activity of plant extracts were monitored using the agar disk-diffusion method against strains gram-positive bacterial: Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa; and gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Salmonela typhi, and strains of fungi: Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was monitored at different concentrations of 50, 25, 12.5 and 6.25 mg/mL prepared from the stock concentration (100mg/mL) by serial dilution; with standard drugs: ciprofloxacin and fluconazole. The inhibition of the test organisms were concentration dependent. The methanol extract showed significantly higher Inhibition Zone (IZ) and Activity Index (AI) against the microbes at all concentrations compared to the ethyl acetate and hexane extracts due to the much phytochemicals (saponins, tanins, phenols, flavonoids, cardiac glycocides and alkaloids) found present in its extract. The overall study results signify the potential of Cyperus rotundus as a source of therapeutic agents. The methanol extract showed the best activity against both bacterial and fungal pathogens at the highest concentration of 100 mg/mL, especially the most susceptible bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (IZ of 25.0±1.5; AI of 0.96) and Candida albicans (IZ of 25.5±0.5; AI of 0.91). At MIC, MBC and MFC of 6.25 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL, the plant extracts showed effective bactericidal and fungicidal effect against the test microbes.

A study out to investigate the phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of Sonneratia caseolaris fruit, a mangrove plant from Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Sonneratia caseolaris extract was prepared by two different solvent: ethyl acetate and ethanol 70%. We tested the extract of Sonneratia caseolaris for antioxidant activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). The phytochemicals were extracted separately with ethyl acetate and ethanol 70% by maceration. The evaluation of antibacterial activity for different solvent with different concentration of Sonneratia caseolaris fruit was measurements of inhibitory power are measured by measuring the diameter of the clear zone formed. In phytochemical test Sonneratia caseolaris fruits extracted by ethyl acetate solvent confirmed the presence of flavanoids, saponin, tannin and phenolic and extracted by ethanol 70% solvent confirmed the presence of alkaloid, saponin and phenolic. The antioxidant activity as indicated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity of the Sonneratia caseolaris fruits extract from the species was found to be quite appreciable. The antioxidant scavenging activity of Sonneratia caseolaris fruit extract by ethyl acetate solvent was 0.38% and by ethanol solvent was 0.08%. Antimicrobial activity of Sonnerati caseolaris fruits ethyl acetate extract obtained significant was from P<0.05 of Escherechia.coli and Candida albicans but not significant of Staphylococcus aureus. The Sonneratia caseolaris extracted by ethanol 70% solvents was highly promising among Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans with level of significance was from P <0.05. The study suggests Sonneratia caseolaris fruits as a potential source of bioactive compounds with stable antioxidative and antimicrobial properties and can be used as natural antimicrobial/antioxidative agents in clinical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries.
