<p><em>Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an acute febrile infectious disease caused by four virus serotypes of the genus Flavivirus that is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes.Lubuk Basung District is a DHF endemic with the most number of cases, namely 91 cases. The purpose is to analyze the environmental risk factors and to determine a description susceptibility of Aedes larvae in Lubuk Basung District. The study is an observational analytic with case-control design. The sample size was 81 cases and 81 control. The research was conducted in the Lubuk Basung District. Bivariate analysis result showed that the habit of hanging clothes (p=0,000 ; OR = 3,44 ; CI 95 % = 1,60–8,23), and the habit of not using mosquito repellent had a significant correlation with incidence of dengue (p = 0,026 ; OR = 2,07 ; CI 95 % = 1,08–4,12).  The results of susceptibility testing larvae in Lubuk Basung District included in the vulnerable category that is&gt;98%. Conclusion is the habit of hanging clothes, the habit of not using mosquito repellent were risk factor of DHF in Lubuk Basung District.</em></p><p><em><br /></em></p><p>Demam Berdarah Dengue (DBD) adalah penyakit infeksi demam akut yang disebabkan oleh empat serotipe virus dari genus Flavivirus yang ditularkan melalui gigitan nyamuk Aedes spp yang terinfeksi. Kecamatan Lubuk Basung merupakan kecamatan endemis DBD dengan jumlah kasus terbanyak pada tahun 2014 yaitu 91 kasus. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk menganalisis faktor risiko lingkungan dan mengetahui gambaran kerentanan larva nyamuk Aedes spp di Kecamatan Lubuk Basung Kabupaten Agam.Jenis penelitian ini adalah observasional analitik menggunakan rancangan studi kasus kontrol dengan responden sebanyak 81 kasus dan 81 kontrol. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan variabel yang bermakna terhadap kejadian DBD di Kecamatan Lubuk Basung adalah kebiasaan menggantung pakaian (p=0,000 ; OR = 3,44 ;dan CI 95 % = 1,60–8,23), dan kebiasaan menggunakan obat anti nyamuk (p = 0,026 ; OR = 2,07 ; dan CI 95 % = 1,08–4,12). Hasil uji kerentanan larva di kelima Nagari Kecamatan Lubuk Basung termasuk dalam kategori rentan yaitu &gt;98 %. Kesimpulan penelitian adalah ada hubungan kebiasaan menggantung pakaian dan kebiasaan menggunakan obat anti nyamuk dengan kejadian DBD di Kecamatan Lubuk Basung.</p>

Background: Children’s Tuberculosis (TB) in Indonesia at 2013 was fourth ranks in the world. The cases of children’s pulmonary tuberculosis in Pekalongan at 2013 be amounted 88 (32%) of the total cases of TB (271), greater than 8% of national cases. Children’s pulmonary tuberculosis is a disease that can be cured and are not duly claimed the lives of children. The purpose of this study is analyze the relationship between the mother's behavior and physical environment house of children with the incidence of children’s pulmonary tuberculosis in Pekalongan City.Methods: The study was observational with case control design. The cases are pulmonary tuberculosis patients and control are child is not a child’s pulmonary tuberculosis. The subjects were 50 cases and 50 controls. Results: The results of the bivariate analysis are associated with incidence population density with children’s pulmonary tuberculosis (p = <0.001), ventilation (p = 0.004), temperature of room (p = 0.036), density occupancy (p = <0.001) and natural lighting (p = 0.016). The results of multivariate analysis are risk factor for the incidence of children’s pulmonary tuberculosis with mother’s knowledge (p = 0.049; OR = 2.918; 95% CI = 1.005 to 8.472), density occupancy (p = 0.020; OR = 3.379; 95% CI = 1.212 to 9.417), humidity (p = 0.025; OR = 3.236; 95% CI = 1.156 to 9.058) and ventilation (p = 0.022; OR = 3.224; 95% CI = 1.182 to 8.797).Conclusion: The density occupancy, humidity, ventilation, mother’s knowledge are a risk factor pulmonary TB incidence of children in Pekalongan City.  Keywords: Behavior Mother, the physical environment house, children’s pulmonary tuberculosis, Pekalongan City.

Background: The death of toddler due to pneumonia is still high because its risk factor still exist and has not been managed properly. United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) states that in 2011 there was 1.3 million deaths of children below five years old (toddler) and 14% of the number was caused by pneumonia.Methods: The design for this research was case control with 27 cases and 27 controls. The case was toddlers who were diagnosed with pneumonia by doctor of public health center (hereafter Puskesmas), aged 0-59 months and were recorded in the ill toddler register from January 1, 2016 until December 31, 2016, meanwhile control was healthy toddlers who were invited to Puskesmas during the research. Data was collected through interview, observation and measurement using questionnaire. Univariate, bivariate, multivariate analyses were performed using Stata SE 12.1.Results: Bivariate analysis showed that two years of breastfeeding and ARI frequency, as the risk factors of pneumonia on toddler. From bivariate analysis, it was found that the risk factor which was proven to be significant and increased pneumonia on toddler was OR ARI with the value of 5.67 (95% CI:1.16-27.82).Conclusions: ARI frequency as the risk factor of pneumonia on toddler at Puskesmas I South Denpasar.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis is one of the most common eye disorders in the worldwide. The incidence of conjunctivitis in Indonesia reached 73% of the population. Conjunctivitis cases in Yogyakarta City have increased from year to year. AIM: This study purposed to identify the social-environmental risk factors that influence the incidence of conjunctivitis in Yogyakarta. METHODS: Design study was an observational analytic method with a case–control research design. The population study was all the patients visited at the Eye Clinic of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital and private hospital Yogyakarta in 2019. The total sample is 204 respondents who were divided into case and control. One hundred and four respondents were in a case while 100 were controlled. The case was a conjunctivitis patient treated at the Eye Clinic of PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital and private hospital Yogyakarta in 2019, while the control was a non-conjunctivitis patient who went to the same two hospitals as the case respondent. Data were collected by direct interviews using a structured questionnaire covering the respondents’ demographics and social-environmental conditions. Then, the data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 univariate and bivariate using Chi-square. RESULTS: The results of the bivariate analysis showed that age, the distance between the house and the river, the distance between the place and the temporary garbage dump, contacted from a close friend, the windows of the house were always opened every day as risk factors affecting the incidence of conjunctivitis. CONCLUSION: The study’s decision is the social-environmental as a risk factor for conjunctivitis in Yogyakarta.

Abstract Background Evidence for periconceptional or prenatal environmental risk factors for the development of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is still scarce. Here, in a case-control study we investigated potential environmental risk factors in 199 CDH patients compared to 597 healthy control newborns. Methods The following data was collected: time of conception and birth, maternal BMI, parental risk factors such as smoking, alcohol or drug intake, use of hairspray, contact to animals and parental chronic diseases. CDH patients were born between 2001 and 2019, all healthy control newborns were born in 2011. Patients and control newborns were matched in the ratio of three to one. Results Presence of CDH was significantly associated with maternal periconceptional alcohol intake (odds ratio = 1.639, 95% confidence interval 1.101–2.440, p = 0.015) and maternal periconceptional use of hairspray (odds ratio = 2.072, 95% confidence interval 1.330–3.229, p = 0.001). Conclusion Our study suggests an association between CDH and periconceptional maternal alcohol intake and periconceptional maternal use of hairspray. Besides the identification of novel and confirmation of previously described parental risk factors, our study underlines the multifactorial background of isolated CDH.

Background:Cardiovascular disease (CV) is the most frequent cause of death in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. It is well known that RA acts as an independent cardiovascular risk factor.Objectives:To assess the CV risk in RA patients using carotid ultrasonography (US) additionally to the traditional CV risk factors.Methods:A prospective transversal case control study was performed, including adult RA patients who fulfilled ACR/EULAR 2010 criteria and healthy controls matched according to CV risk factors. Population over 75 years old, patients with established CV disease and/or chronic kidney failure (from III stage) were excluded. The US evaluator was blinded to the case/control condition and evaluated the presence of plaques and the intima-media thickness. Statistical analysis was performed with R (3.6.1 version) and included a multivariate variance analysis (MANOVA) and a negative binomial regression adjusted by confounding factors (age, sex and CV risk factors).Results:A total of 200 cases and 111 healthy controls were included in the study. Demographical, clinical and US data are exposed in table 1. Not any difference was detected in terms of CV risk factors between the cases and controls. Moreover it was also related to the disease duration and DAS28 score (p<0.001). A higher plaque account was noted in cases(p<0.004) and it was also related to the disease duration (p<0.001).Conclusion:RA implies a higher CV risk. Abstract Objective: To determine whether electronically available comorbidities and laboratory values on admission are risk factors for hospital-onset Clostridioides difficile infection (HO-CDI) across multiple institutions and whether they could be used to improve risk adjustment. Patients: All patients at least 18 years of age admitted to 3 hospitals in Maryland between January 1, 2016, and January 1, 2018. Methods: Comorbid conditions were assigned using the Elixhauser comorbidity index. Multivariable log-binomial regression was conducted for each hospital using significant covariates (P < .10) in a bivariate analysis. Standardized infection ratios (SIRs) were computed using current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) risk adjustment methodology and with the addition of Elixhauser score and individual comorbidities. Results: At hospital 1, 314 of 48,057 patient admissions (0.65%) had a HO-CDI; 41 of 8,791 patient admissions (0.47%) at community hospital 2 had a HO-CDI; and 75 of 29,211 patient admissions (0.26%) at community hospital 3 had a HO-CDI. In multivariable regression, Elixhauser score was a significant risk factor for HO-CDI at all hospitals when controlling for age, antibiotic use, and antacid use. Abnormal leukocyte level at hospital admission was a significant risk factor at hospital 1 and hospital 2. When Elixhauser score was included in the risk adjustment model, it was statistically significant (P < .01). Compared with the current CDC SIR methodology, the SIR of hospital 1 decreased by 2%, whereas the SIRs of hospitals 2 and 3 increased by 2% and 6%, respectively, but the rankings did not change. Conclusions: Electronically available patient comorbidities are important risk factors for HO-CDI and may improve risk-adjustment methodology.

Abstract There are well-known traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). Among them, smoking is one of the most prominent and modifiable risk factors. This study aims to determine the magnitude of smoking as a risk factor for CAD in the Nepalese population. A hospital-based age- and sex-matched case–control study was carried out with a total of 612 respondents. Bivariate analysis showed that the risk of developing CAD in ex-smokers and current smokers was higher (odds ratio (OR): 1.81 (confidence interval (CI): 1.21–2.7) and OR: 5.2 (CI: 3.4–7.97)), with p-values less than 0.004 and &lt;0.00001, respectively, compared to the risk in never smokers. From stratified socio-demographic, cardio-metabolic, behavioural and psychosocial risk factor analysis, smoking was found to be associated with CAD in almost all subgroups. In the subsequent multivariate analysis, adjustment for socio-demographic, cardio-metabolic and psychosocial risk factors showed a steady increase in risk. However, further adjustment for behavioural risk factors (alcohol use and physical activity) showed that the risk was attenuated by 59% in current smokers. After adjusting for the covariates, current smokers and ex-smokers had an increased risk of CAD (OR: 6.64, 95% CI: 3.64–12.12, p &lt; 0.00001; OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.08–3.31, p &lt; 0.012, respectively) compared with non-smokers. In conclusion, smoking was found to increase the risk of CAD in the Nepalese population.

This case-control study was done to identify the correlation between the familial, social and environmental risk factors and autism. This hospital and specialized centre based study done from January 2002 to November, 2004. Thirty two children from the autism group and 14 children from the control group were enrolled. Mean age were 3.75 yrs. and 2.83 yrs. respectively. Significant proportion of children were in the highest birth orders, 68.8% in autism and 78.6% in the control group. Full term children were 96.9% and 92.9% respectively. 53.1% children in the autism and 57.1% in the normal speech delay group were born by cesarean sections. Higher education of parents in autism group was statistically significant (p<0.05). Too much watching TV, inadequate opportunity to mix with peers and inadequate interactive relationship with the family members in the early childhood were significantly (p= 0.001) related to the development of autism.Bangladesh Med Res Counc Bull 2014; 40 (3): 113-117
