Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the effect of supplementing drinking water with extracts from lemon balm, sage and nettle on body temperature, level of thyroid hormones and the heterophil to lymphocyte (H:L) ratio in the blood of broiler chickens exposed to elevated rearing temperature. One-day-old Ross 308 chicks were divided into four groups: group I (CON) and experimental groups II (LB), III (S) and IV (N), in which, from 22 to 42 days of rearing, drinkers were supplemented with lemon balm extract, sage extract or nettle extract (2 ml/l water), respectively. In addition, at 5 weeks of growth, all the groups were exposed to elevated ambient temperature (up to 30°C) for 5 days, after which the recommended thermal conditions were reinstated. During the study, mortality, rectal temperature and radiated temperature of the broilers were monitored. Blood was collected from 10 birds per group to determine the concentration of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and to make blood smears. The H:L ratio was determined based on the percentage of heterophils (H) and lymphocytes (L). The herbal extracts from lemon balm, sage and nettle, added to drinking water at 2 ml/l, reduced the blood level of the thyroid hormone (triiodothyronine) and rectal temperature in the experimental broilers during the initial period of thermal stress. Chickens receiving the nettle extract were also characterised by lower radiated temperature of the unfeathered body, a lower H:L ratio in the blood during the increase in ambient temperature, and the lowest mortality percentage. It can therefore be considered that the dietary supplementation of nettle, in the form and concentration used in this study, had the most favourable effect on the physiological status of the birds (body temperature, level of thyroid hormones and H:L ratio) ratio exposed to elevated ambient temperatures (30oC), and thus on their welfare.

Measurements of rectal temperature (Tre), water lost by evaporation (Eresp) and drooling, cardiac output (CO), and common carotid blood flow (CCBF) were made in dogs (mean hydrated wt 31.0 +/- 1.5 kg) running for 1 h on a level treadmill at 7.5 km/h at an ambient temperature of 25 degrees C. Each animal was studied when it was hydrated ad libitum and when it had been dehydrated by removal of drinking water until 9–10% of the initial body weight had been lost. Dehydrated exercising animals had significantly higher Tre and lower rates of Eresp, CO, and CCBF. Tre and Eresp were measured in seven animals. Average Tre during running was 39.11 +/- 0.10 degrees C in hydrated and 39.80 +/- 0.25 degrees C in dehydrated animals (P less than 0.01). Average Eresp during running was 3.9 +/- 0.3 g/min in hydrated animals and 2.3 +/- 0.3 g/min in dehydrated animals (P less than 0.01). Average CO during exercise, measured in five animals, was 11.1 +/- 0.7 1/min in the hydrated state and 8.6 +/- 0.5 1/min in the dehydrated state (P less than 0.01). Unilateral CCBF during exercise, measured in four animals, was 602 +/- 40 ml/min in the hydrated state and 418 +/- 22 ml/min in the dehydrated state (P less than 0.01). Water lost by drooling in seven exercising animals was 41.5 +/- 11 g/h when they were hydrated and 0.6 +/- 0.4 g/h when they were dehydrated. It is concluded that dehydrated dogs doing mild exercise can save water by reducing Eresp and regulating body temperature above hydrated levels.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Twenty-four lactating buffaloes were chosen and subsequently divided into 4 groups i.e. group-I (control), group-II (supplemented astaxanthin at 0.25 mg kg-1 BW/day), group-III (prill fat at 100 g day-1), and group-IV (combination). Surface body temperature at different anatomical regions of buffaloes was recorded using infrared thermography (IRT), rectal temperature using a digital thermometer, and cortisol hormone by ELISA kit at the fortnightly interval. Forehead region temperature showed a higher correlation (0.390) with THI compared to other anatomical regions. The change in surface body temperature was positively correlated with THI and cortisol levels. The increase in the IRT temperature at different anatomical sites of buffaloes was at a lower magnitude in treatment groups compared to the control group. Udder surface temperature was higher in peak lactation and high producing buffaloes. Forehead region temperature showed a close relationship with rectal temperature and cortisol levels of buffaloes. According to the research findings, astaxanthin and prill fat can be used in ameliorating heat stress. Infrared thermography (non-invasive method) of the forehead and udder can be used as indicators for measuring the heat stress and production levels of buffaloes, respectively.

Systemic administration of cholecystokinin C-terminal octapeptide (CCK-8) decreases body temperature. However, it remains unclear whether reduction of body temperature is concomitant with suppression of food intake at CCK-8 doses that approach physiological levels. We examined rectal temperature after intraperitoneal CCK-8, 4 micrograms/kg, both in the presence and absence of a preferred food. We found that rectal temperature was significantly reduced by CCK-8 in both conditions and that the reduction of temperature coincided with the time of maximal suppression of food intake by CCK-8. In rats pretreated systemically with 25 or 175 mg/kg of the sensory neurotoxin capsaicin, both suppression of food intake and reduction of body temperature were significantly attenuated or abolished. The 25 mg/kg capsaicin treatment did not alter corneal chemosensitivity or the ability of rats to maintain normothermia at elevated ambient temperature, suggesting that capsaicin damage to neural substrates mediating CCK-8-induced reduction of body temperature 1) did not generalize to cephalic or peripheral warm-sensitive structures, and 2) was limited to fine sensory fibers accessible to intraperitoneal capsaicin application.

ABSTRAK. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mempelajari respon fisiologi, produksi dan kualitas susu sapi perah Frisian Holstein pada akhir musim kemarau panjang di Balai Pengembangan Ternak Sapi Perah dan Hijauan Makanan Ternak (BPT-SP HMT) Cikole, Lembang, Bandung.  Penentuan sampel menggunakan metode purposive sampling. Parameter mikroklimat yang diamati antara lain adalah temperatur lingkungan, kelembaban relatif, kecepatan angin, radiasi sinar matahari dalam kandang dan Temperature-Humidity Index (THI). Respon fisiologis yang diamati meliputi suhu rektal, suhu kulit, suhu tubuh, frekuensi respirasi dan denyut jantung. Nilai rerata THI (73.93±5.51) menunjukkan sapi perah berada dalam kondisi  stress ringan. Nilai rerata dari suhu rektal, suhu kulit, suhu tubuh, frekuensi respirasi dan denyut jantung secara berurutan 37.94±0.20°C; 32.15±1.25°C; 37.13±0.32°C; 39.13 ±3.00 dan 79.74±6.19. Nilai rerata persentase bahan kering, lemak dan protein susu secara berurutan 10,19 ± 0,72, 2,14 ± 0,38 dan 2,50 ± 0,32. Temperatur lingkungan yang tinggi  mempengaruhi respon fisiologis antara lain peningkatan denyut jantung yang lebih tinggi dari normal dan kualitas susu yang lebih rendah.   (Physiological responses and milk qualities of holstein friesian during long dry season at high altitude)ABSTRACT. The objectives of this study were to evaluate physiological responses and milk qualities of dairy cows in Balai Pengembangan Ternak Sapi Perah dan Hijauan Makanan Ternak (BPT-SP HMT) Cikole West Bandung at the end of long dry season. Samples were determined by using purposive sampling method. Microclimate parameters  were included  ambient temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, solar radiation and temperature-humidity index (THI). Physiological responses consisted of rectal temperature, skin temperature, body temperature, respiration rate and pulse rate. The mean value of THI (73.93±5.51) showed that dairy cows suffered by heat stress. The mean value of rectal temperature, skin temperature, body temperature, respiration rate and pulse rate were 37.94±0.20°C; 32.15±1.25°C; 37.13±0.32°C; 39.13±3.00 and 79.74±6.19 consecutively. The average percentage value of dry matter, fat and protein content in milk were 10.19±0.72, 2.14±0.38 and 2.50±0.32. High ambient temperature and low relative humidity affected physiological responses such as pulse rate that higher than normal,  and  lower milk yield.

To determine the effect of the thyroid hormones on body temperature at rest and during exercise, five mongrel dogs were trained to run on a treadmill and then treated with exogenous triiodothyronine (T3) (1 mg/kg) to elevate circulating T3 levels or propylthiouracil (PTU) (200 mg/day for 14 days) to lower endogenous T3 levels. When compared with levels in euthyroid controls at rest and during exercise, rectal temperature (Tre) was increased (P less than or equal to 0.01 and P less than or equal to 0.02, rest and exercise, respectively) in T3-treated dogs and decreased (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.01) in the PTU-treated dogs. Although the rise in Tre from rest to exercise in the PTU trial was slightly less than that of the control runs (1.23 vs 1.44 degrees C, respectively; P = 0.05), it was similar to the rise in Tre observed in the T3 experiments (1.37 degrees C). Because T3 treatment resulted in an elevation in exercise oxygen consumption (VO2), untreated dogs were run at elevated work loads such that their VO2 matched that recorded when pretreated with T3. Exercise Tre in these experiments was lower (P less than 0.02) than after T3 treatment, even though the exercise metabolic rates were equivalent. It was concluded that 1) although T3 alters body temperature, the magnitude of the rise in Tre during exercise is not dependent on T3 concentration and 2) the effects of T3 on body temperature at rest and during exercise are mediated through mechanisms other than alterations in metabolic rate.

AbstractThe aim of the present study was to determine the effects of supplementing drinking water with an extract of mixed herbs or housing with outdoor access on carcass traits, levels of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and selected quality parameters of meat from broiler chickens. One-day-old Ross 308 broiler chickens were allocated to three groups: group I (control), in which birds were kept in compartments on litter and had no outdoor access; group II, in which birds were kept in compartments on litter without outdoor access and were supplemented with an extract of mixed herbs (50% Melissa officinalis L. and 50% Urtica dioica L.) at 2 ml/l of drinking water; and group III, in which birds were raised in compartments on litter and had outdoor access from day 1 of rearing. Throughout the rearing period, the broilers had free access to feed and water. On day 42, 20 birds were selected from each group, slaughtered and subjected to simplified slaughter analysis. Their breast and leg muscles were measured for pH, colour, water holding capacity (WHC) and drip loss, and analysed for the content of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) and fatty acids. The outdoor access reduced dressing percentage, both with (P≤0.01) and without giblets (P≤0.05). The supplementation of drinking water with the mixed herb extract (2 ml/l) improved the muscle antioxidant status (higher SOD, CAT and GSH content) and reduced lipid peroxidation in the leg muscles of the broilers (lower MDA level). In general, the supplementation of the diet with the mixture of herbs in the applied form and concentration, as well as the outdoor access had no effect on the other examined quality parameters of broiler meat.

<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Background:</strong> The inspiratory oxygen fraction (FiO<sub>2</sub>) is usually set between 60% and 100% during conventional extracorporeal circulation (ECC). However, this strategy causes partial oxygen pressure (PaO<sub>2</sub>) to reach hyperoxemic levels (&gt;180 mmHg). During anesthetic management of cardiothoracic surgery it is important to keep PaO<sub>2</sub> levels between 80-180 mmHg. The aim of this study was to assess whether adjusting FiO<sub>2</sub> levels in accordance with body temperature and body surface area (BSA) during ECC is an effective method for maintaining normoxemic PaO<sub>2</sub> during cardiac surgery.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Methods:</strong> After approval from the Ethics Committee of the University of Acıbadem, informed consent was given from 60 patients. FiO<sub>2</sub> adjustment strategies applied to the patients in the groups were as follows: FiO<sub>2</sub> levels were set as 0.21 × BSA during hypothermia and 0.21 × BSA + 10 during rewarming in Group I; 0.18 × BSA during hypothermia and 0.18 × BSA + 15 during rewarming in Group II; and 0.18 × BSA during hypothermia and variable with body temperature during rewarming in Group III. Arterial blood gas values and hemodynamic parameters were recorded before ECC (T1); at the 10th minute of cross clamp (T2); when the esophageal temperature (OT) reached 34°C (T3); when OT reached 36°C (T4); and just before the cessation of ECC (T5).</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Results:</strong> Mean PaO<sub>2</sub> was significantly higher in Group I than in Group II at T2 and T3 (<em>P</em> = .0001 and <em>P</em> = .0001, respectively); in Group I than in Group III at T1 (<em>P</em> = .02); and in Group II than in Group III at T2, T3, and T4 <br /> (<em>P</em> = .0001 for all). </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Adjustment of FiO<sub>2</sub> according to BSA rather than keeping it at a constant level is more appropriate for keeping PaO<sub>2</sub> between safe level limits. However, since oxygen consumption of cells vary with body temperature, it would be appropriate to set FiO<sub>2</sub> levels in concordance with the body temperature in the <br /> rewarming period.</span></p>

It is known that necessary to replace the components of organic acids, which are part of acidifiers when drinking water to poultry in order to prevent the adaptation of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. In the poultry industry organic acids are widely used, which are used as acidifiers to preserve the properties of water consumed. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of broiler meat production when using acidifying agents of drinking water Aquasafe and Veleguard. The experimental part of the work has been performed in JSC “Kurinoe Tsarstvo-Bryansk” broiler area “Roshcha” in the Pochepsky district. The object of research was the livestock of broiler chickens cross Cobb 500 at floor housing. The effect of water acidifiers on meat productivity has been studied. Groups of chickens have been formed on the principle of pairs-analogues. Broiler chickens of experimental groups have been separated from the main livestock by a grid in the corner of the room for 100 heads in each group. It has been found by a result of research to be optimal dose usage of acidifying agents water Aquasafe and Veleguard to drink to broiler chickens. The positive effect of these acidifiers on the digestion of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, contributing to the effective use of nitrogen, which led to an increase in the intensity of growth, young animals’ livability and improved feed conversion. Slaughter yield in the control group was 55,1 %, and in the experimental group 57,2 and 58,4 %, which was by 2,1 and 3,3 % higher with the same level of metabolic energy and nutrients. In chickens that consumed acidifi ers more intensively used nutrients feed for deposition in the body of the components of the carcass, which affected the production. A positive impact of acidifying agents Aquasafe and Veleguard on meat quality in broiler chickens has been found.

Background: Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by symptoms and signs of infection in the first twenty eight days of life. Serum thyroid, cortisol and hepcidin are affected by neonatal sepsis. Aim of the work: The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of serum thyroid hormones including free triiodothyronine (free TT3) and free tetraiodothyronine (free TT4), serum cortisol and hepcidin levels through comparison of their concentrations between normal neonates and neonates with high probable late onset sepsis. Patients and Methods: This case control study was carried out on 40 neonates with suspected high probable late onset neonatal sepsis based on clinical and laboratory finding who were admitted to NICU of Pediatric Department, Tanta University, Egypt in the period from April 2017 to May 2019 (group I) and 40 healthy neonates matched in age and sex as a control group (group II). For patients and controls; blood culture, highly sensitive C‑reactive protein (H-s CRP), serum hepcidin, serum cortisol and thyroid hormones levels including free TT3 and free TT4 were assessed. Results: There were no significant differences between studied groups as regard weight, gestational age, sex and mode of delivery. H-s CRP, serum cortisol and hepcidin were significantly higher in group I than group II while serum free TT3 and free TT4 were significantly lower in group I compared with controls. There was significantly lower H-s CRP, serum hepcidin and cortisol and significantly higher serum free TT3 and free TT4 in group I after antibiotic therapy compared to the same group before treatment while there were no significant differences between group I after antibiotic therapy and control group as regard the same parameters. There were significant positive correlation between H-s CRP and serum hepcidin and cortisol in group I while there was significant negative correlation between H-s CRP and free TT3 and free TT4. ROC curve of specificity and sensitivity of H-s CRP, serum hepcidin, cortisol, free TT3 and free TT4 in prediction of neonatal sepsis shows that serum hepcidin had the highest sensitivity and specificity with 95% and 90% respectively followed by serum cortisol, H-s CRP, free TT3 and lastly free TT4. Conclusion and recommendations: Neonates with high probable sepsis had significantly higher serum cortisol and hepcidin and significantly lower free TT3 and free TT4 compared with healthy neonates. These findings may arouse our attention about the use of these markers in diagnosis of in neonatal sepsis which can lead to early treatment and subsequently better prognosis.
