The Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta) is the country's capital and largest city in Indonesia. Jakarta as a large capital city has an attraction as a place to look for income, it is very attractive for residents from various regions in Indonesia to come to Jakarta who are settled and claim to be citizens of Jakarta. The number of migrants in Jakarta is around 68,500 people and it is predicted that as many as 60% live in Jakarta. Jakarta is a city with a fairly rapid economic growth rate. At present, more than 70% of state money is circulating in Jakarta. Since the early 1980s, the DKI Jakarta Government has been intensively building modern shopping centers, or commonly known as malls and plazas. At present Jakarta is one of the cities in Asia that has many shopping centers. In addition to luxury shopping centers, Jakarta also has many traditional markets and wholesale trade centers. For smaller environments, shopping centers for daily necessities are also available at affordable prices, such as Indomaret and Alfamart. The city of Jakarta as the capital of Indonesia focuses its development as the center of Indonesian business so that it is now densely filled with houses and tall buildings. The condition of the city of Jakarta is dense with residents and buildings, certainly there are many problems that arise, and the main problems of the city of Jakarta such as traffic jams, social problems and flooding. Traffic congestion makes Jakarta residents become lazy to leave the house so that an individualistic lifestyle makes social interaction decrease, also causes stress. The lives of Jakarta residents who live in high-rise buildings such as apartments that are mushrooming in Jakarta, which are very individual and cannot interact with the surrounding environment and daily activities are only "confined" in apartment units create a boring atmosphere and make residents become stressed. The problems faced by the City of Jakarta, of course, require solutions that really must be considered by the Government, especially the Local Government of the City of Jakarta. For that reason the author tries to make a city facility that can be a bridge between activities at home and work activities, in the social and economic fields in the form of Third Place, named Modern Hangout Market.

The tumultuous nineteenth century brought Parisian led regime change in 1830, 1848 and in many respects 1870. Although Napoleon III and Haussmann had hoped their Paris works would tame the capital city as they constructed uniform boulevards and transformed the crowded medieval centre into a bourgeois space. Throughout the twentieth century, the movement of people and goods throughout the Paris region remained a challenge and official maps showed how to address that issue. The German occupation during World War II effectively ended any hope of Prost’s 1934 plan to come to fruition. However, the damages afflicted on the city during combat allowed leaders to refocus their attention on the city. The pre-war work done by the Service géographique, Jaussely, and Prost allow future urban officials, such as Lopez and Bernard Lafay, to address problems such as increased traffic, parking, housing shortages, decentralization, and increased sprawl. The end of the war shifted national priorities away from the capital but by the 1950s, economic growth meant that urban planners needed to focus yet again on ameliorating development in greater Paris.

On the Evening of August 7, 2008, Inal Pliyev was working late at his office in the center of Tskhinval(i). A former journalist, Pliyev was head of communications for the self-declared South Ossetian Republic. Earlier in the evening, Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili had declared a unilateral ceasefire after days of skirmishes between Georgian forces and South Ossetian militias. Pliyev, however, was still in the office because of information about increasing Georgian artillery and armor concentrations near the town. “First we heard what sounded like grenade launchers—after the years of conflict everyone here knows what sound is made by which weapon. I did not pay much attention to that.” But when he heard the first sounds of Grad missiles, Pliyev turned off his computer and ran for his life. “All parts of the city came under fire simultaneously. It was so intense, that you couldn’t even register a fraction of time between explosions, there were multiple explosions every second. The fire was non-stop. Electricity and gas supplies were cut off during the first minute of the shelling, and for the most part phone service was also cut off.” One shell fell next to the government building where Pliyev and his colleagues huddled. “The building shook so much that part of the ceiling bent down, and we ran into an underground bunker in a nearby non-government building. Explosions were becoming louder and even more frequent. We could not leave our hideout, and everyone was getting ready to die. Even more we feared being taken prisoner by Georgian soldiers. It was especially terrifying when we heard machine gun fire. Our only thought was to avoid being taken prisoner at any cost. Our only hope was for the Russian air force, we were waiting for it to come, so that Georgians would leave our city. But it wasn’t coming.” Pliyev had his mobile phone, and as its battery ran out he spoke to various Russian media outlets pleading for Russian military help.

Jakarta is the second most populous city in the world with a population density of 10 million people in 2017. Density causes rapid development in the Jakarta area without any planning. The development that occurs makes the boundaries between office zoning located in the downtown area and residential zones located on the edge of the city. The zones formed have resulted in increased mobility that can be seen from vehicle ownership, transportation modes, and traffic congestion in Jakarta. Charles Montgomery in the book Happy City said that high congestion causes a decline in health that occurs due to stress for the community of public transportation modes. One way to reduce stress is to socialize according to Adhiatma and Christianto (2019). Third Place or social space becomes a solution for socializing for the public transportation community. The Third Place concept can be felt more by the public transportation community, where they can feel the difference between the housing zone and the office zone. The transit or transit place that is formed will be a social space that is used without differentiating social status. One of them is the transit facility located in Rawa Buaya. The Rawa Buaya transit facility is designed using qualitative data collection techniques and cross programming in design planning. The method used produces three main programs that emphasize service, entertainment and commercial functions, which shape social interaction, gathering space, and space for interaction between Rawa Buaya bus terminal communities.

Human social life connected with the growth of the city itself, day now people in common are individualist so the idea of third place come up by sociologist Ray Oldenberg. According to Ray Oldenberg place divide into three, first place is a home, second place – workplace, and third place the place where you can relaxing, hangout, and socialize with the other. Third place have an important role to strengthen social relation, but third place day now is more focus on commercial activities, for example mall, café (Starbuck), bar or restaurant (Mcd) with the target market is upper middle class people so it create sense of ‘unwilling’ to lower middle class people to come to  the same place. This problem could cause social gap and third place no longer open for everyone (neutral). To answer this problem, writer designing SPA & Wellness Facility at Kalideres as third place for people in Kalideres region. This facility provide relaxation facility that can be enjoyed for free nor paid. The free facility consist of park, gymnastics area and shallow water pool for relaxation, this free facility is intended so the lower middle class people at Kalideres can enjoyed the third place facility.

AbstractDespite the contemporary importance of the Ridge forest to the city of Delhi as its most important ‘green lung’, the concept of urban forestry has been explored neither by urban historians studying Delhi nor by environmental historians. This article places the colonial efforts to plant a forest on the Delhi Ridge from 1883 to 1913 within the context of the gradual deforestation of the countryside around Delhi and the local colonial administration's preoccupation with encouraging arboriculture. This project of colonial forestry prioritized the needs of the white colonizers living in Delhi, while coming into conflict repeatedly with indigenous peasants. With the decision to transfer the capital to Delhi in 1911, the afforestation of the Delhi Ridge received a further stimulus. Town planners' visions of a building the capital city of New Delhi were meant to assert the grandeur of British rule through imposing buildings, with the permanence of the British in India being emphasised by the strategic location of the ruins of earlier empires within the city. The principles of English landscape gardening inspired the planning of New Delhi, with the afforestation of the Delhi Ridge being undertaken to provide a verdant backdrop for—the Government House and the Secretariat—the administrative centre of British government in India. Imperial notions of landscaping, which were central to the afforestation of the Delhi Ridge epitomised colonial rule and marginalized Indians.

Cities in Africa are experiencing fast urbanization with growing demand for basic services. The city of Dar es Salam, one of the fastest growing cities in the region and the world, is likely to guide the urban future in Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is the former capital city of Tanzania and retains its importance as most of the government offices were located. However, the whole process of complete relocation of government offices to the present capital city of Dodoma might affect the dynamics in Dar es Salaam in the near future. Nevertheless, it is the leading commercial centre and economic hub in Tanzania and is expected to be a mega city by 2030. The growth of the city is construed by both natural increase and high rate of migration. However, the city’s organic growth was affected by racial-based residential segregation under the colonial regime, whose imprints are evident to date. In this profile, an overview of Dar es Salaam’s colonial, post-colonial, social, economic and location factors that led to urbanization is provided. This profile highlights the previous, current and future challenges, and explores the pathways to enhance sustainability and transformation of Dar es Salaam to be a smart city. Poor implementation of master plans led to minimal guidance of city growth, but the current land and and human settlement policy emphasizes on sustainable approach in urban planning including low costs but sustainable settlements even for the urban poor. Such transformation requires government and city management to invest in better planning implementation, creation of database that will inform future planning, improvement in social services such as infrastructure, access to quality and affordable housing, water and electricity supply. This paper contributes to the existing literature on nature of cities in developing countries, which had been affected by colonialism and poor implementation of policies, and suggest ways in which cities can to become smarter and sustainable.

Waste produced since man living in social structure and community. Lately, waste problems becoming one of modern society’s interests. Population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and economic growth increasing solid waste significantly. In addition to that, education has contributed to solid waste. The incapability of government to manage waste causing problems in the health environment sector. The increase in waste generated demands the government to do waste management better. This research purpose is to analyze the most significant factor to waste generated based on sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, that can be used as basic planning for the facility and cost of waste management systems. Cities included in the research’s coverage area are the capital city of Sumatera Provinces, except Banda Aceh. There are two methods in this research. The first method is cluster analysis to classify cities based on waste generated. The second methods are ANOVA and discriminant analysis to determine the most significant factor of the classification result. Analysis cluster shows that Medan and Bandar Lampung included in a group of the city with high waste generated. Whereas, Pekanbaru, Tanjungpinang, and Pangkalpinang included in a group of the city with low waste generated. ANOVA and discriminant analysis shows that the most significant factor to waste generated in Sumatera Island is population density.

There is currently a wide discussion on promoting a walkable environment and improving walkability especially in city centre. Walking in the city is meant to solve numerous problems ranging from the city vibrancy, traffic congestion, environmental injustice, social isolation to the human health issues related to obesity crisis. This paper aims to examine the walkable environment of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman as one of the busiest pedestrian urban places in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. It investigates the pedestrians’ perception on their walking experience based on the walkable environment elements i.e. comfort, safety and levels of enjoyment. A participant observation and questionnaire survey technique were employed whereby the former involved with the researchers general physical evaluation of the site and the latter engaged a random sample of 120 pedestrians of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman for a paper-based on street questionnaire survey. The findings suggested that the majority of the respondents were satisfied with the existing conditions of comfort and safety and hence, regarded Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman as a walkable area. However, their level of enjoyment was generally minimal suggesting that there are rooms for further improvement in the pedestrian area tocreate a better and more conducive walkable environment.
