Lisa Lindquist Dorr tells the story of the vast smuggling network that brought high-end distilled spirits and, eventually, other cargoes (including undocumented immigrants) from Great Britain and Europe through Cuba to the United States between 1920 and the end of Prohibition. Because of their proximity to liquor-exporting islands, the numerous beaches along the southern coast presented ideal landing points for smugglers and distribution points for their supply networks. From the warehouses of liquor wholesalers in Havana to the decks of rum runners to transportation networks heading northward, Dorr explores these operations, from the people who ran the trade to the determined efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies to stop liquor traffic on the high seas, in Cuba, and in southern communities. In the process, she shows the role smuggling played in creating a more transnational, enterprising, and modern South.

Corruption is the abuse of power for private gain that dangers various aspects in a country. Recently, corruption case that eroded the moral legitimacy of law enforcement officers had been revealed. The purpose of this article is to evaluate law enforcement against corruption by public officials in Indonesia as well as measures to overcome its problems effectively. The methodology used in this research is normative legal research which focused on secondary data approach. The injustice that includes weak sentencing regarding the bribery case of Pinangki Sirna Malasari had caught the public's attention for the lack of impactful sentencing. This injustice makes more potential corruptors who are ignorant of the law. Indonesia’s law enforcement agencies are considered to have high tolerance for corruption cases, and this principle of conditional justice has become common knowledge for the people. Corruption has the potential to destroy the nation’s morale, hinder economic development, and trigger anarchism. The government and society must synergize in instilling an anti-corruption mindset towards themselves and the younger generation. Surveillance towards government institutions must be strengthened with public participation. Intervention of president as the highest authority is needed when there’s injustice under his realm of authority. Formulation of a supporting legislation and establishment of anti-corruption institutions in every government or state agencies are needed. In order to create a government that is free of corruption, realization of anti-corruption law in Indonesia had to be done seriously.

Changes to the law are a necessity in accordance with the development of society, whether one law is revised or in the form of reconstruction or deconstruction by changing all existing laws, especially in one state institution that has a special function, for example the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) must follow development? What is the Institutional and Personal Position of the KPK after the status transfer to State Civil Apparatus? How effective is the KPK in eradicating corruption after it has been reconstructed? The reconstruction of the KPK institution is expected to bring the KPK to be better, more optimal and remain a supervisory institution for other law enforcement agencies that are able to bring order and legal certainty and justice to the people of Indonesia. The change in the status of KPK employees to State Civil Apparatus is a form of generalizing KPK personnel without making distinctions like so far, so it is feared that there will be no more competition and contestation between the investigative teams who work professionally. The existence of the KPK institution is re-examined with the enactment of Law Number 19 of 2019 concerning the KPK, hopefully the stigma of the superbody institution will remain attached to the KPK will not turn into a super executive institution that works at the request of certain parties and hopefully the KPK will maintain the psychology of the people who hope that the KPK must continue to exist even if fired for doing "HONEST" and the truth.

On 1 January 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began collecting data on crimes involving animal cruelty from law enforcement agencies that participate in the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) in the United States (U.S.). The article deals with the issues of reforming the law enforcement and judicial system in the protection of constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens, which was raised in recent years by the Head of state Kassym-Jomrt Kemelovich in his Address to the people of Kazakhstan on September 1, 2020. In the system of law enforcement agencies, there is still an accusatory bias from which it is still not possible to get rid of. The stage where the greatest violation of the constitutional rights of citizens involved in the orbit of criminal prosecution occurs is the pre-trial stage of the investigation. Therefore, special attention should be paid to this stage of the criminal process. In addition, a significant layer of problems is not only in the procedural, but also in the organizational and legal sphere. In this regard, the provisions of the CPC of the Republic of Kazakhstan related to evidentiary activities in pre-trial proceedings should be considered in the format of new tasks and updated functions of the pre-trial investigation bodies, the Prosecutor, the investigating judge and the lawyer. If Kazakhstan resolves the question repeatedly raised by the Leader of the nation about the true, rather than illusory, institutional independence of the judge in the administration of justice within the judicial system itself, then procedural and technical problems, including the deformalization of evidence, will become secondary and will be resolved in a fair trial without the influence of the materials of the criminal case in any form.

Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) are dangerous for human health and environment. The e-waste may comes from both external (import) and domestic industries. Batam as part of Indonesia jurisdiction have been a place of e-waste dumping. The e-waste mostly comes from Singapore. The rest is from Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The influx of electronic waste is done through smuggling at certain place. Police actually knows about the smuggling but not take any action. This crimes was backed up by any army and police. It reflects the ineffectiveness of law enforcement in Batam regarding e-waste smuggling. The ignorance causes the environment and human health is not well protected. Lack of understanding of legal knowledge by law enforcement agencies should be a particular concern for the government. On the other hand, for the people of Batam, e-waste still have economic value. Therefore, they don’t care about the menace of e-waste to human health and environment. The government should develop them in order to manage e-waste properly. The government may refer to the Government of India's Bangalore city with regard to how the people manage e-waste.
