The wood vinegar of the stem of mangosteen (G. mangostana L.) is the result of pyrolysis of the stem which is condensed into steam. Wood vinegar contains acid and phenol compounds that have antibacterial activities. This research aims to determine the biological activities of the wood vinegar of the stem of mangosteen (G. mangostana L.) on the viability of Streptococcus sp. (L.10.3) and determine the concentration of wood vinegar of the stem of mangosteen (G. mangostana L.) which is effective in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus sp. (L.10.3). This research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments consisting of wood vinegar with a concentration of 0.1 (Tl); 0.5 (T2); 1 (T3) and 1.5% (T4), negative controls namely sterile distilled water (T5), and positive control namely chlorhexidine of 0.2% (T6). The viability test used the dilution method and calculation of the number of colonies using the total plate count (TPC) method, each treatment was repeated four times. The results showed the increasing concentration of wood vinegar of the stem of mangosteen (G. mangostana L.) and the decreasing amount of Streptococcus sp. (L.IO.3). Wood vinegar at concentration 1.5% showed bacterial growth of 6.9 x 105 CFU / ml which was very different from sterile distilled water by 2.5 x 107 CFU / ml with inhibition up to 96.9% and not significantly different from chlorhexidine of 0.2%.

This study aimed to determine the effect of the red watermelon extract can affect the number of leukocytes in mice exposed to cigarette smoke. This study was designed with a completely randomized design using a unidirectional pattern 20 male mice (Mus muscullus) were divided into 4 groups. K1 negative controls were given 0.5 ml of distilled water, K2 positive control by exposure to cigarette smoke and 0.5 ml of distilled water, K3 by exposure to cigarette smoke and red watermelon extract were given a dose of 22 mg / mouse and K4 by exposure to cigarette smoke and were given extracts of red watermelon a dose of 44 mg / mouse. Exposure to cigarette smoke and red watermelon extract conducted for 30 days, making blood on day 31. Blood sampling performed at Plexus Retroorbitalis. Furthermore, counting the number of leukocytes. Data were analyzed using ANOVA completely randomized design with SPSS for Windows 16.0. The results of this study showed that the extract of watermelon for 30 days showed their real influence (P 0.05) to the number of leukocytes in mice. It is concluded that free radicals contained in cigarette can cause a leukocytosis, an inflammatory, oxidative stress and red watermelon extract can minimize cell damage.

Rahman AS, Purwoko T, Nugraheni ER. 2011. The influence of ethanol extracts concentration of mengkudu fruit (Morinda citrifolia) and storage time toward beef quality. Biofarmasi 9: 26-32. The high protein content of beef makes it easy to get a contamination caused by an activity of bacteria. The use of formalin as a preservative substance especially for beef can make a damage to health, so it is required to find preservative substances as alternative to substitute formalin. Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia L.) has antibacteria compounds to the decompose bacteria of beef, so mengkudu fruit can be one of natural preservative substance alternatives, especially for beef. The purposes of this research were to determine the influence of ethanol extracts concentration of mengkudu fruit and a storage-time effect toward bacteria amount, and to determine the concentration that had a same activity with formalin to combate the replication of bacteria. This research used two-way completely randomized design. The samples were fresh meat beef that be submerged in mengkudu extract with concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100% and formalin 1% as a comparator. After that, the beef was storaged in a room temperature during 16 hours, and every 4 hours it was tested for water content, pH value, beef temperature and a total plate count (TPC) test with a dilution method, and then the number of bacteria colonies with the limit of the bacteria amount of the beef to consume might not be more than 1x104 CFU/gram. The data were analyzed by ANOVA. If there was a significance, it would be continued by a DMRT test with an error rate 5%. The research results showed that all extracts concentration of mengkudu fruit and storage-time gave a significant effect (p<0.05) toward bacteria amount. The concentration of 100% had the same activity with formalin to combate the replication of bacteria among 16 hours storage time.

 Objective: The wide variety of biological activities of different indane derivatives makes them an interesting moiety in the field of medicinal chemistry. The objective of the study was to identify and develop novel antimicrobial agents from indanyl analogs.Methods: Recently synthesized indanyl analogs (4a-c and 5a-o) were examined against various pathogenic microorganisms (Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi) using serial dilution method. These analogs were found to possess antibacterial and antifungal activities with minimum inhibitory concentration values ranging between 1.56 and 100 μg/mL.Results: The results revealed that the entire compounds showed mild-to-moderate antibacterial activities and moderate-to-excellent antifungal activities against the pathogenic microorganisms as compared to the standard drugs ciprofloxacin and fluconazole, respectively. Compounds 4a, 5a, 5b, 5d, 5e, 5i, and 5j exhibited antifungal activities superior to the reference drug.Conclusion: Based on the structure-activity relationship, it can conclude that the indan-3-oxo-1-acetic acid moiety is essential for the activities and lipophilic alkoxy substituents on indane ring have enhanced the biological activity. Further, structure-activity relationship studies of the compounds 4a, 5a, and 5b are needful to find the new lead as antimicrobial agent.

Background Literatures revealed that 1,4-pentadien-3-one and triazine derivatives exhibited a wide variety of biological activities. In order to develop highly bioactive molecules, in this study, a series of novel 1,4-pentadien-3-one derivatives containing triazine moieties were synthesized and their antibacterial and antiviral activities were investigated. Methods A series of novel 1,4-pentadien-3-one derivatives containing triazine moieties were synthesized and characterized in detail via 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS spectra. The antibacterial activities against Xanthomonas axonopodispv. citri (Xac), Xanthomonas oryzaepv. oryzae (Xoo) and Ralstonia solanacearum (R.s) were evaluated at 100 and 50 µg/mL using a turbidimeter and N. tabacun L. leaves under the same age as that of test subjects. The curative, protective and inactivation activities against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) at a concentration of 500 µg/mL were evaluated via the half-leaf blight spot method. Results The bioassay results showed that some of the target compounds exhibited fine antibacterial activities against Xac and R.s. Particularly, half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values of some target compounds against R.s are visibly better than that of the positive control bismerthiazol (BT). Notably, compound 4a showed excellent inactivation activity against TMV with a EC50 value of 12.5 µg/mL, which was superior to that ofningnanmycin (NNM,13.5 µg/mL). Besides, molecular docking studies for 4awith tobacco mosaic virus coat protein (TMV-CP) showed that the compound was embedded well in the pocket between the two subunits of TMV-CP. These findings indicate that 1,4-pentadien-3-one derivatives containing triazine moieties may be potential antiviral and antibacterial agents.

Eryngium foetidum is a plant commonly used a seasoning cuisine and has a variety of chemical compounds that potentially an antifungal. The ethanol extract Eryngium foetidum was tested against fungal isolate Xi.01. The isolat Xi.01 isolated from the pepper (Piper Nigrum) stem was identified as Xeromyces sp. This study aimed to determine the ability of the antifungal ethanol extract of Eryngium foetidum against Xeromyces sp. (Xi.01). This study used solid dilution method and completely randomized design using 18 treatments, i.e negative control, positive control, diethanolamide concentration of 2.5; 5; 7.5 and 10% combined with the ethanol extract concentration of Eryngium foetidum of 5; 10; 20 and 40%. The results showed 16 treatment combinations had the same low antifungal activity level in the range 13,59-22,40%

Plants have been used for centuries to treat various diseases. In this study, Marrubium globosum Montbret & Aucher ex Benth. plant was used as a material. The extract of the plant was extracted with the help of soxhlet device using ethanol, which is a good polar solvent, and Rel Assay kits were used to determine the oxidant and antioxidant levels in the plant extract. Antifungal and antibacterial activities of M. globossum were tested against standard bacteria and fungus strains by agar dilution method. As a result of the analysis, TAS value of plant extract was determined as 7.677±0.231, TOS value as 12.387±0.083 and OSI value as 0.162±0.004. In this context, it has been observed that the plant has an important antioxidant potential. In addition, the plant extract was found to be effective against test microorganisms at 50-200 μg/mL extract concentrations. As a result, it has been determined that M. globossum can be a natural antioxidant and antimicrobial source.

ABSTRACT Background: Pomegranates contain chemical saponins and flavonoids while lemongrass stems have flavonoid chemical compounds. Substances that can inhibit the linking of bacteria are saponins and flavonoids. The most common microorganism found in ulcus diabetikum (ulcer diabetes) is Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of a combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and ethanol extract of lemongrass stems against S. aureus bacteria.Methods: This study used an experimental design with a complete randomized design study divided into 5 groups: groups 1 (75:25), 2 (50:50), 3 (25:75), positive control (tetracycline) and negative control. Manufacture of pomegranate peel extract and lemongrass stems was done by maceration method for further rotary, after the extract was obtained tested for antibacterial activity by diffusion method using a cylinder. With the test used analysis of variance one way.Results: The results of this study showed that the combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and citronella stem ethanol extract showed activity against S. aureus with a ratio of 15 ul:5 ul, 15 ul:15 ul, 5 ul:15 ul with inhibitory diameter of  respectively 13 mm, 11 mm, 8 mm. Whereas for positive control with chloramphenicol, the inhibition area is 9 mm.Conclusions: Statistically the combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and lemongrass stems has antibacterial power which uses p=0.005 and p<0.05. The combination of pomegranate ethanol extract and lemongrass stems has very strong antibacterial activity against S. aureus due to inhibition zones of 10-20 mm.

This study evaluated the acaricide efficacy of Piper macedoi essential oil on larvae of ticks of the species Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The test consisted of six treatments: from the group I to IV, samples corresponded to different concentrations of essential oil (500 μg.mL-1; 250 μg.mL-1; 100 μg.mL-1 and 50 μg.mL-1) diluted in Tween 80 at 2%. Groups V and VI corresponded to the negative controls (with distilled water and Tween 80 to 2%) and the positive control (with acaricide Amitraz at 12.5%), respectively. The essential oil was rich in apiole (39.81%) and dillapiole (26.47%). The essential oil of P. macedoi presented an activity against the larvae of R. sanguineus, with a better efficiency observed for concentrating 500 μg.mL-1, mortality of 80.67%, indicating a dose-dependent response.

Fruit of Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is well-known in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. Studies have shown that extract of the pericarp of mangosteen contained mostly of xanthones exhibit many biological activities, especially as an antitumor. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic activity and selectivity of Mangosteen Peel Extract (MPE) and α-mangostin against two leukemia cell lines (HL-60 and K-562) and the normal lymphocyte cells from two different donors. The cytotoxic activity was performed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxyme-thoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay. Imatinib and Isotretinoin were used as a positive control to the K-562 and HL-60 cells, respectively. The MPE and α-mangostin revealed higher mortality toward leukemia cell lines rather than toward lymphocyte cells, with more than 80% of HL-60 and K-562 cells died at 6.25 and 25 μg/ml, respectively. MPE was more toxic and selective against K-562 with IC50 of 2.79 μg/ml and SI of 8.27, while α-mangostin was more toxic and selective against HL-60 with IC50 of 1.12 μg/ml and SI of 22.34. MPE and α-mangostin showed potent sensitivity and selectivity to leukemia cells, hence these are considered as promising sources for future leukemia treatment.

Plant swords (Nephrolepis exaltata) are ferns in the Lomariopsidaceae tribe which are easily found on the banks of rivers, cliffs, and contain flavonoids and alkaloids that can inhibit the growth of albicans candida fungi. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Sword nail extract (Nephrolepis exaltata) on the growth of albicans candida fungi. This research is a quantitative laboratory experimental type using a completely randomized design (RAL) with 4 different treatment groups, 1 negative control (pz sterile) and 1 positive control (ketocenazole). The parameters observed were the number of colonies (CFU) and the average area of ​​the inhibition zone (mm). The data was analyzed using SPSS software using one way ANOVA analysis which was then followed by a test using DMRT. The results showed that all concentrations differed from the negative controls, while the extract concentration of 1000 ppm compared to the positive controls had no difference. Sword nail extract (Nephrolepis exaltata) has an influence on the growth of candida albicans mushrooms, namely the number of colonies of 6.78 CFU (6x106) at a concentration of 1000 ppm and inhibition zone 33.10 mm at a concentration of 1000 ppm.   Keywords : Candida albicans, Sword spikes (Nephrolepis exaltata), Inhibitory Zone, Colony Count.
