Objective of the study was to compare serum level of nitric oxide (NO), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), arginine, placental growth factor (PIGF), soluble Fms like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), soluble endoglin (sEng), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, in normotensive and preeclamptic pregnancies in relation to body mass index (BMI). The study was done on 100 healthy normotensive and 100 preeclamptic pregnant women. Based on BMI, they were categorized into three groups. Group 1 (<25 kg/m2), group 2 (25 – 30 kg/m2) and group 3 (>30 kg/m2).  ADMA, eNOS, arginine, PlGF, sFlt-1, sEng were estimated by ELISA method, and MDA, NO, GPx, SOD, and catalase by spectrophotometric method. Statistically, a significant difference was not observed within normotensive and preeclampsia in relation to BMI. But when respective normotensive was compared with preeclampsia, there was a high increase of ADMA, sFlt-1, sEng, and MDA. A significant decrease was observed in arginine, eNOS, NO, GPx, SOD, and catalase in preeclampsia. This study shows that though preeclampsia is associated with overweight and obesity, but during pregnancy, higher BMI has no additional deleterious effect in preeclampsia.

Background: Stroke induced white matter damage is associated with neurological functional deficits, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase knockout (eNOS-/-) mice exhibited a higher mortality, more severe neurological functional deficit, and decreased neurogenesis, angiogenesis and arteriogenesis after stroke than wild type mice. There are no reports as to whether eNOS is related to the white matter change post-stroke. Methods: Adult male C57BL/6 WT and eNOS -/- mice were subjected to permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) by a filament and sacrificed 7 days after MCAo. Functional evaluation, infarct volume measurement, and immunostaining for analysis of white matter changes were performed. Results: There is no significant difference in the infarction volume between wild type and eNOS -/- (wild type : 23.09%±3.32%; eNOS-/-: 27.83%±4.92%, p=0.436, n=9/group). However, eNOS -/- mice showed significantly decreased functional outcome tested by the singal pellet reaching test (wild type: 38.46%%±1.43%, eNOS-/-: 27.45%±2.41%, p=0.0017). eNOS -/- mice also exhibited increased white matter damage compared to wild type mice, including decrease: 1. Axonal density stained by Bielshowsky Silver in the ipsilateral striatal bundles (wild type: 22.06%±3.0%, eNOS-/-: 13.32%±2.18%,, p=0.031), and in the contralateral striatal bundles (wild type: 65.35%±3.97%, eNOS-/-: 29.38%±5.84%, p=0.02); 2. Density of phasphorylated neurofilament by SMI31-immunoflureoscent staining (wild type: 24.11%±2.06%, eNOS-/-: 7.90%±1.70%, p=0.009); 3. The number of CNPase-positive oligodendrocytes in the ischemic border (wild type: 52.23±5.10, eNOS-/-: 35.59±5.33, p=0.041); 4. The number of NG2-positive oligodendrocyte progenitors in the ischemic border (wild type: 26.22±2.31, eNOS-/-: 18.38±1.95, p=0.0187). There is no significant difference in the density of Luxol fast blue stained myelin in the ipsilateral striatal bundles between wild type and eNOS -/- mice (wild type: 25.21%±3.64%; eNOS-/-: 21.39%±6.29%, p=0.260). Conclusions: We are the first to report that eNOS not only regulates vascular changes and neurogenesis, but also plays an important role in white matter changes after stroke.

Introduction: Body weight gain in children and teenagers is one of the major challenges that cause undesirable health outcomes. Simultaneously with the prevalence of overweight and obesity, children and adolescents are diagnosed with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency in different sides of the world. The present study aimed to assess 25(OH)D status among Iranian volunteers aged 1-16 years and find the correlation between 25(OH)D status and body mass index (BMI) subjects.    Material and Methods: The total volunteers included 807 Iranian children aged 1 to 16 referred to the general and endocrinology clinics in Babol city, Mazandaran Province. A trained physician determined anthropometric characteristics. Serum levels of calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), creatinine (Cr), urea, thyroxine (T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and 25(OH)D were assessed in all children.      Results: 25.27% of the children were 25(OH)D deficient, and 59.1% were insufficient. There was no significant difference in serum 25(OH)D level between girls and boys (P=0.13). A significant negative correlation was found in serum 25(OH)D level with weight (P=0.000, r=-0.12), BMI (P=0.000, r=-0.13), and age (P=0.000, r=-0.13). Conclusion: These data displayed that 25(OH)D insufficiency is highly prevalent among children in the north of Iran. Serum 25(OH)D levels are affected by age and BMI value. Improving vitamin D deficiency helps to maintain the health of children and adolescents during this critical period.

ObjectiveEndothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) intron 4a/b polymorphism is associated with plasma NO concentrations and coronary artery disease/hypertension in various populations. GH deficiency in adulthood predisposes to reduced NO concentrations and premature atherosclerosis. Our aim was to determine whether intron 4a/b polymorphism of eNOS gene influences endothelial function and early atherosclerotic changes in GH-deficient hypopituitary patients.DesignThirty-three hypopituitary GH-deficient patients on conventional replacement therapy other than GH and 43 age-, sex-, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls were studied in this cross-sectional case–control study.MethodsEarly atherosclerotic changes were determined by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of brachial artery and carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT). eNOS4a/b polymorphism was detected by PCR.ResultsHypopituitary patients had significantly higher total/low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fat mass and lower IGF-I concentrations compared with controls. IMT was significantly higher in patients (0.777±0.23 vs 0.639±0.17 mm, P<0.01). No significant difference was observed with respect to FMD measurements. eNOS4a/b genotype frequencies were similar between patients and controls. Patients carrying ‘a’ allele (a/a and a/b) had significantly higher IMT compared with controls carrying ‘a’ allele and bb genotype (P<0.05). However, logistic regression analysis revealed that presence of hypopituitarism, age≥45 years, and BMI≥27.9 kg/m2 were significant independent predictors of IMT≥0.65 mm.ConclusionNo compelling data are evident to suggest that eNOS4a/b polymorphism modifies the atherosclerotic process in GH-deficient situations. A large case–control study is needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract Introduction. It’s known that the issue of polytrauma is one of the most urgent problems of surgery, and among injured patients a special approach is required for patients with overweight and obesity of varying degrees. Purpose of the study. To study prognostic features of traumatic disease course and to improve the results of diagnostics and surgical treatment of patients with polytrauma suffer obesity. Materials and methods. Clinical material was made up of 106 patients with combined body trauma, which were divided into three groups according to body mass index. Results. The results of the research showed a significant difference in the course of traumatic disease in patients with normal body weight and obesity. In particular, in the process of diagnostics of blunt chest and abdominal trauma the frequency of application of interventional methods of diagnostics was directly proportional to the increase of body mass index. The course of traumatic disease in the obese patients had a number of characteristic features that formed the basis for the development of diagnostics and differential program of treatment. Conclusions. The results of the research showed that the course of traumatic disease in combined injury obese patients is directly proportional to the body mass index and has certain features that differentiate them from patients with normal body weight. Background and Objective: Endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene polymorphism  (eNOS) is one of three isoforms that synthesize nitric oxide (NO), that participates in several biological processes have been associated with obesity. This study was undertaken to determine if eNOS gene (G894T) was associated with susceptibility of obesity. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 200 cases divided into 100 obese patient and 100 healthy as control. The mean age cases was (27.02 ± 10.90) they include 79 female and 21 males. All participants were subjected to an estimation of their body mass index (BMI), weight hip ratio (WHR), in addition to random blood sugar (RBS), total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and lactate dehydrogenase enzyme (LDH). DNA was amplified using PCR-SSP for detection of relation between polymorphism and endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene in G894T.   Results: All cases showed that there were  no significant difference between cases and controls regarding to their chemical lab’s  analysis (TG, Cholesterol, LDL and HDL).All cases showed significant frequency of G894T GG, TT and GT (P <0.001) vs. Controls Conclusion: The polymorphism G894T of eNOS considered as a potential risk factor for obesity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the problems of underweight, overweight and obesity in young people of high school in Drenas, respectively a sample of 150 adolescents (73 males and 77 females aged 17 years). The research was conducted in the physical education class, initially was performed measurement of weight and height then the questionnaire with 26 questions. Data were collected with the statistical program SPSS version 21.0, descriptive analysis was performed with (Mean and standard deviation), all variables were tested for normality, significant level (significant level p <0.05). Results of anthropometric characteristics, the average age was 17.2 years. Weight / kg for men was 59.4 kg for women 57.3kg the average for both genders was 58.3 (± 6.2) kg. Height / cm  males 1.68cm,  females 1.61cm the average of both genders was 1.64 (± 6.6) cm. BMI body mass index kg / m² in men 21.0, women 22.1, the average of both sexes 21.55 kg / m5. The results show that men have lower BMI (p> 0.05) 21.55 kg / m² than girls with 22.1 kg / m². Data showed underweight males are 12%, and females 10%. BMI Normal male 74%, and female 69%. Overweight males 11%, females 13% while a significant difference was observed between obese boys and girls (obese) males 3% and females 8%. The analysis of the questionnaire showed that small percentages are involved in collective or individual sports, the most pronounced participation in sports was identified: football, volleyball and basketball, and relatively satisfactory were physical activity in household activities. It is recommended to build outdoor fitness and sports gyms, as well as the opening of various sports clubs in this area, and to have more research in this area, to prove the institucions how important are places for sport and physical activities.

Aim: To evaluate the effects of body mass index (BMI) ratio on semen parameters and serum reproductive hormones. Materials and methods: The data of 454 patients who prsented to male infertility clinics in our hospital between 2014 and 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. Weight, height, serum hormone levels and semen analysis results of the patients were obtained. BMI values were calculated by using the weight and height values of the patients and they were classified as group 1 for BMI values ≤ 25 kg/m2, as group 2 for BMI values 25-30 kg/m2 and as group 3 for BMI values ≥ 30 kg/m2. Results: The mean values of BMI, semen volume, concentration, total motility, progressive motility, total progressive motile sperm count (TPMSC), normal morphology according to Kruger, head abnormality, neck abnormality, tail abnormality, FSH, LH, prolactin, T/E2, total testosterone and estradiol parameters of the patients were considered. Patients were divided according to BMI values in Group 1 (n = 165), Group 2 (n = 222) and Group 3 (n = 56). There was no statistically significant difference in terms of all variables between the groups. Conclusions: We analyzed the relationship between BMI level and semen parameters and reproductive hormones, demonstrating no relationship between BMI and semen parameters. In our study, BMI does not affect semen parameters although it shows negative correlation with prolactin and testosterone levels.

Abstract Introduction: Light/dark cycles are the main synchronizing signal (zeitgeber) that entrain human’s internal clock to the 24h-days. Some aspects of urban environments, including irregular light exposure and weak zeitgebers, influence the circadian organization and thereby may have an impact on metabolism. Comparing communities at different levels of urbanization and with different histories of access to electricity might provide evidence to support associations previously found between disrupted patterns of light exposure and increased populational rates of overweight and obesity. The present study aimed to investigate whether living at a higher level of urbanization would be associated with higher body mass index (BMI). It was hypothesized that BMI is higher in urbanized communities, since their inhabitants have weaker zeitgebers, often associated with disrupted circadian rhythms. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in Quilombolas communities, located in the south of Brazil. Subjects were categorized into 5 groups based on their communities’ stage of urbanization and history of access to electricity: from rural with no access to electricity to highly urbanized communities that have access to the grid. We used data from 134 participants aged 16 - 92 years old (63% women), who had 7 days of light exposure recordings collected using wrist-worn actimeters. We also collected anthropometric data to calculate BMI, which was then categorized as follows: ≥18.5 kg/m² to &lt;25 kg/m² = normal weight; ≥25 kg/m² to &lt; 30 kg-m² = overweight; ≥ 30 kg/m² = obesity. We used Shapiro-Wilk to test for normality, Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn to compare BMI between groups and Spearman to assess whether there was an association between patterns of light exposure and BMI. Results: Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn test showed a significant difference in BMI between the urban group and the rural ones (KW: X² = 11.987, p &lt; 0.001). Lower average light exposure between 7 am and 5 pm was significantly correlated with higher BMI (Spearman, r = - 0.296, p &lt; 0.001). Also, higher average light exposure at night (from 1 am to 6 am) was significantly correlated with higher BMI (Spearman, r = 0.256, p = 0.002). Conclusions: Our results support the hypothesis that low amplitudes of light exposure may be a risk factor contributing to the high prevalence of obesity worldwide. Studies have previously shown associations between BMI and social jetlag, suggesting the correlations found in our study may be related to higher levels of circadian misalignment, more often present where zeitgeber strength is lower, as in urban environments. Future research is needed to address causal relationships between light exposure and excessive body mass in humans. Provided light exposure is a risk factor for obesity, these results point to potential new targets for intervention and prevention strategies.

On the other hand there no significant difference between 27bp aa, bb, and ab (p=0.618) vs. controls. Conclusion: The polymorphism T786C not the 27bp in eNOS was associated with obesity.

ABSTRACT Introduction The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of overweight issues and obesity by recording the body mass index (BMI) and explore the dietary habits, physical activities (PAs), and lifestyles of male students at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University. Materials and methods A custom-designed self-administrative form and questionnaire were used in this study for data collection. The first part of the form was used to record the participants’ height and weight for the BMI. The participants were grouped as underweight (BMI < 18.5), normal weight (BMI = 18.5–24.9), overweight (BMI = 25–29.9), and obese (BMI > 30.0). The second part comprised questions related to the dietary habits, PAs, and lifestyles of the male dental students. Chi-squared test was used to generate the significance of each question at significance <0.05. Results A total of 211 male students (mean age 22.31 ± 2.10 years) participated in the study (response rate 78.1%). The findings revealed that 29 and 28% of the dental students were overweight and obese respectively. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups was found for the questions asked about time spent exercising per day (p = 0.003), time spent sporting per week (p = 0.003), and time spent watching television and internet surfing per day (p = 0.012). Conclusion The prevalence of overweight issues and obesity is high among the dental students compared with the general population of Saudi Arabia, and there is a need for intervention programs to combat obesity among the dental students. The awareness about PA, healthy diet/lifestyle, consequences of overweight and obesity on their health and profession must be increased among the dental students to avoid future complications. Clinical significance The impact of obesity on individuals’ oral health and its influence on dental treatment protocols and postoperative procedures has been well documented. Dental students are more prone to obesity due to their lifestyle with less PA and disordered eating habits and, thereby, are prone to obesity-related health hazards.
