This research intends to clarify the forms of  metaphors, conceptual meaning, and image scheme  that appear in the five English short stories named The Short Story online platform by applying cognitive semantics. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The whole result of this research is illustrated by words. The theory used in analyzing the metaphors is from Saeed (2009). Besides, the theory for investigating the scheme is from Cruse and Croft (2004). The result of this research is 12 metaphors that have been classified based on their categories. First, five data of conventional metaphors with conceptual meaning such as life choice, darkness, noise, nervousness, and old. Second, four data of  systematic metaphors with conceptual meaning such as fearness,  compulsion, fire, and waving. Third, two data of asymmetric metaphors with conceptual meaning such as preparation and persistence. The last, one data of abstraction metaphor with conceptual meaning that is hard working. Those data have 4 image schemes, such as force (restraint, compulsion, and counterforce), existence (space, process, object), identity (matching), and unity/multiplicity (merging).

The background of this research is there is an indication that the short story was created not just accentuate the beauty aspects of language and narration. However, the language in the meaningful short stories and the author's ideological message through imaginary characters constructed. The purpose of this study is to reveal hegemony and ideology that contains short stories “Surga untuk Lelaki yang Tertipu” by Adam Yudhistira. The research approach used in the realm of sociology of literature, with the study of Gramsci hegemony. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Research data in the form of language; words, phrases, sentences in the short story related ones are described and interpreted with the Gramsci hegemony approach. The results of the study show the relationship between the teacher's figure and Santo like a patron-client. The teacher has a higher status (superior) and the power to rule Santo (inferior). The ideological hegemony was carried out by the teacher's figure towards Santo went well. Because it has and is bound by the same beliefs. The orientation of the two figures is the same, namely heaven. The ideology instilled by the teacher has a significant influence on the Santo, so he wants to take action that sacrifices the lives of others and himself. The act which was originally believed to be true by Santo, but regretted in the end.

This research examines readers’ perspective of 18 Indonesian national characters in Inem, a short story by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The sample of this research is 34 students of XI Akuntansi Keuangan dan Lembaga of SMKN 1 Pujon. The aim of this research is to analyze whether the students’ perceptions toward Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story, entitled Inem match to their understanding on 18 Indonesian national characters. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The finding of this research states each student has different perception of the Indonesian national characters in the Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story entitled Inem. However, most of the students have the same perceptions of the Indonesian national character in the short story entitled Inem. Their perception depends on how they understand the meaning of each of the 18 Indonesian national characters. Therefore, the researcher claims that the students’ perceptions toward Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story, entitled Inem match to their understanding on 18 Indonesian national characters.

This study is to find out the relationship of characters to illustrations in a collection of 9short stories from NadiraKarya Leila S. Chudori. In the collection, there are four short stories that contain illustrations of the main characters namely "Melukis Langit”, "Tasbih", "Sebilah Pisau", and "At Pedder Bay". The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method by using Charles Sanders Pierce's Semiotic Theory which includes sign and object. The study of characterization or characterization is done in two methods namely direct (telling) and indirect (showing). The results of  this study indicate that out of the 4 short stories analyzed only 3 short stories that have character relationships with illustrations, namely the short story "Melukis Langit", "Tasbih" and "Sebilah Pisau". Short story of "Melukis Langit" depicts Nadira's character who is strong against her father's behavior since the death of his mother. The short story illustration shows Nadira crying in the bathroom to vent her sadness. Short story "Tasbih" describes Mr. X with a mysterious character illustrated by showing Mr. X's face full of mystery while the short story "Sebilah Pisau" tells Kris who is Nadira's secret admirer. Kris's character is displayed with illustrations illustrating the event when Nadira was surprised to see Kris's table filled with Nadira's picture. Short story "At Pedder Bay" tells Nadira's old friend Marc who is also an admirer of Nadira for a long time. The main character, Marc in this short story is not illustrated in the illustration. The short story shows a background, namely the lake and the figure of the woman sitting pensively.

The title of this paper is a conversational implicature analysis on Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. In this paper, the writer discusses conversational implicature in one of Oscar Wilde’s short stories entitled “Happy Prince”. The objectives of the study are to identify the implicature utterances conveyed by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince” and to describe the implied meaning uttered by the characters in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. In this study, the writer applies qualitative research method. The objects of this study are ten utterances of conversational implicature in Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince”. Those conversational implicature are obtained through frequent reading and analysis. This study employed the researcher as the instrument to find adequate and profound data and analyze them. The procedures and steps that have been used in this research are: (1) the provision of data, (2) data classification, (3) and data analysis. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Gricean theory. It is a theory about conversational implicature generated by four maxims. Those are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Then the last step is (4) the presentation of data analysis. After conducting the research, the writer found ten conversational implicatures in Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince”. In the short story, there are some variation’s meanings of the conversational implicature used in the short story which closely related to the conversational implicature; they are cooperative, politeness and ironical principle. In Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince”, there are six maxims of politeness principle, two maxims of cooperative principles and two maxims of ironical principles. Besides that, the reasons of the conversational implicature used in Oscar Wilde’s short story “Happy Prince” are to make us easyly understand the dialogue in the short story conversations and it is aimed at minimizing misunderstanding among the readers and literary critics.Keywords: Conversational Implicature; Maxims; Gricean Theory; Short Story

The purpose of this study is to find a description of the elements or religious values ​​contained in the short stories of Kiss Aku di Ujung Subuh by Hamzah Puadi Ilyas. The method in this study is a descriptive qualitative research method. The religious value in the short story Kiss Aku di Ujung Subuh by Hamzah Puadi Ilyas shows that there is religious value in the aspect of belief in Allah, including believing in angels, the Day of Judgment, the prophet's ark, and believing in the Koran and hadiths; religious value in the aspect of awe of the majesty of God includes amazement at the aroma of wickedness, the power of God, and the creation of the universe; religious values ​​in the aspect of the vibration of a personal conscience include a heart vibration of gratitude, cries of events, past memories, and dreams; religious values ​​in the aspect of personal attitudes include the attitude of worship, prostrate, makeistigfar, dhikr, and read the Koran / juz-amma; and religious values ​​in the aspect of mental intimidation include intimidation of the soul from karma, the core process of death, and the process of taking one's life. Based on the results of this study, it can also be seen that the religious value that appears most in the short stories of Ciinum Aku di Ujung Subuh by Hamzah Puadi Ilyas is personal attitude.   Keywords: Score; Religious; Short story; High school

Character education can be instilled in various ways. One of them is through literature. Literature itself is very diverse until now. Among young people, one of the works that have a lot of interest is short stories (short stories), because a short story contains interesting stories to read. In addition, the work also contains a message about positive things. This study aims to describe the value of character education in the collection of short stories Compass 2018 Doa Yang Terapung. Research is included in qualitative research. The method in this study uses descriptive qualitative. The data source in this study is a collection of short stories from Compass 2018 Doa Yang Terapung. Data collection in this study was carried out by reading and understanding short stories and recording data containing the value of character education in the 2018 Compass short story collection Doa Yang Terapung. Data analysis in this study uses the Miles and Huberman flow model, namely data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The results of this study indicate the values of character education in the 2018 Kompas short story collection Doa Yang Terapung, among others a) the value of religious character education (the value of religious character praying to God, the value of religious character accepting destiny, the value of religious character believing & surrendering to God's destiny; b) the value of nationalist character education (the value of nationalist character, the spirit of heroism, the value of nationalist character). willing to sacrifice for his family, and c) the value of independent character education (character values of a good work ethic, professional character values, creative character values).

Nominalizations can be structured by adding affixes before or after root to create new words in language.  Madurese has several language aspects that have not been widely explored. Previous linguistic studies on Madurese mostly focused on morphological aspects such as Madurese affixation in general. Therefore, this research discusses Madurese Deverbal Nominalization Process (Noun Derived from Verb). The goals of this research are to identify what types of affixes which form deverbal nouns in Madurese and to know how the affixation process that forms the deverbal nouns in Madurese. For example: pa-mandi-an, the root is mandi (take a shower) after it attachés to confix (pa- -an) the word class category changes to noun pa-mandi-an, that is a bath room. This research is a descriptive qualitative research, and the data were collected from a Madurese short story entitled Tora (satengkes carpan Madura), which was written by Jamal D. Rahma (2017). The findings are presented descriptively by identifying the process of the derivational forming nouns. The results of this research shows that prefixes, suffixes, confixes and infixes are contributed to create new lexemes in Madurese.

This research in entitled “The Social Aspects of the Main Characters in Mahou Hakase Short Stories”. The purpose of this research is to know the social aspects including habitus, capital, domain, and practice of the main character named Genko Sensei in the short story of Mahou Hakase by Iwaya Sazanami. The theory used is the theory of literary sociology popularized by Pierre Bourdieu regarding habitus, capital, domain, and practice. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods as well as data collection by referring to and taking notes. The data used in the form of paragraphs, sentences, and dialogs in the short story. The results of this study found 38 sosial aspects including 7 habitus, 11 capital, 4 domains, and 16 practices owned by Genko Sensei. Habitus that he had was a good relationship, considered to be good and honest, and able to change bad habits into good. This he combined with capital held in the form of money, a college degree, public speaking skills, do not hesitate to act, confident, good cooperation skills and magic abilities. By utilizing the habitus and capital, Genko Sensei able to do a lot of practice (such as lingers though without legs, grow horns to fight the enemy, and others) to master the realm of Germany, the University, and the Palace. In the end, he was able to become famous, get a degree, defeat the enemy, gain power by winning the hearts of the King at the palace, and received a lot of gifts. Above aligned with Pierre Bourdieu's theory about the relationship habitus, capital, and domains, resulting in practice to seize power.

The objectives of this research were to find out the naturalness of English short story translation into Indonesian and to find out the accuracy of English short story translation into Indonesian. This research employed descriptive qualitative research design which conducted at the second year students of  MTsN 1 Makassar in academic years 2017/2018 . The researcher used purposive sampling technique by taking one class from the twelve classes. The researcher chooses class VIII-11 which consisted of 40 students. The data were collected using document by translation text and interview. The results showed that the naturalness and accuracy of students’ translation of short story entitled The Proud Lion gained score 7-8 with classification “almost completely successful” from 30 students. And 10 students gained score 5-6 with classification “adequate”. It was caused by wrong choice of words and they were still less in selecting the indicated meaning so that their translation sound strange, unnatural, inaccuracy for the readers.

Zora Neale Hurston’s short story is a story of women with different perspective. This revealed the violence toward women and women’s resistance toward the construction of patriarchal. The violence was shown by a husband toward his wife in psychological, physical and sexual form. The theory used   Beauvoir‘s theory (2012). The researcher analyzed the problem in feminist approach. Women who experience oppression took the resistance as a form of struggle over their existence as women. It was reflected toward the main character in this short story. This descriptive qualitative research was used in this short story. This method was used for looking at data contexts that were hidden from quotations in a short story. The findings showed that Delia was able to resist her husband named Sykes. Delia sought her freedom by escaping the scandal the cruel treatment of her husband. Delia’s action contradicted with patriarchal construction that women had to be submissive and respectful towards men due to the women basically were dependent on men. Feminism appeared in this short story was concerned on women’s resistance toward violence experienced in social life in order to get freedom, rights and opportunities as a human.
