In an earlier paper (Bryk & Weisberg, 1976) , we introduced the value-added analysis. This approach built on the notion that many educational programs are dynamic interventions in natural growth processes. In particular, by modeling the natural growth process, we developed an analytic model and estimation procedure for assessing program impact on these growth processes. The present article extends the theory and applications of value-added analysis in several important directions. We present here for practitioners and researchers a coherent overview of the method that emphasizes intuitive rationale and simple data analysis procedures.

For three centuries the primary aspiration of Western governments has been constant economic growth but with the Industrial Revolution this objective became troublesome. In the 20thcentury unprecedented levels of industrial production and social consumption caused palpable harm to humans and the environment. Hannah Arendt and John Kenneth Galbraith turned their pens to such concerns and Bill Mollison and David Holmgren advocated a permaculture approach to growth, one that strives to limit human interference in natural growth processes. Today’s precarious economic and ecological imbalances could be stabilized by a shift in applied growth paradigms, from capitalist to permaculturist.

The purpose of this study is to describe the development of entrepreneurial skills of college students in the intercultural context of Mexico. By a non-probability sampling method, a sample of 120 students from an intercultural institution of higher education in the Southeastern Mexico was selected, from which two groups (<em>Indigenous</em> and <em>Mestizos</em>) were obtained to perform the corresponding statistical analyses. The first group was integrated by indigenous students (<em>n </em>= 55) and the second group by mestizos (<em>n </em>= 65). For data analysis, the Student <em>t </em>test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. The results showed no significant differences in the entrepreneurial skills between both groups. However, significant differences were obtained when considering the educational programs offered by the intercultural institution, where the program in sustainable rural development was the one that obtained a higher level regarding the development of entrepreneurial skills. This research contributes with empirical evidence to the knowledge on interculturality in this country.

Research background: the authors have explored that there are different idea management system (IMS) application types that could be used both locally and globally for diverse reasons and expected outcomes. There is ongoing research on how IMS could be applied for manageable idea management process. But there is a question – how do these IMS types help to set and achieve goals, and improve decision making? Purpose of the article: The article aims to clarify how an external and mixed web-based IMS could be used during COVID19 time for distance idea generation sessions, as well as, to solve complex issues such as decision making, goals’ setting and reaching them based on different idea generation sources and critical reflection on those ideas of evaluators. Methods: Literature review (data collection: systematic data collection from scientific data bases; data analysis: content analysis). The survey of n>400 enterprises with web-based IMS experience globally (data collection: a survey; data analysis: statistics). Findings & Value added: this paper explores how different types of web-based IMS could be applied as a tool and support system for decision making processes in general, decisions towards goal setting and its outreach. The research results provide also a practical contribution - it could help to choose the most appropriate IMS application type to reach estimated goals and to empower decision making.

Quasicrystals possess quasiperiodicity, where the structure cannot be described simply by the repetition of unit cell like conventional crystals. This fact raises the question of how quasicrystals grow, i.e., what physical mechanism makes the growth of quasicrystals possible. While crystals can grow by copying a unit cell via local atomic interactions, nonlocal structural information seems to be required in the growth of quasicrystals. This problem has attracted much attention ever since the first discovery of a quasicrystal in 1984, and several theoretical growth models [1] have been proposed. However, no experimental studies have so far been reported, and it is still unclear whether these theoretical growth models apply to real quasicrystals. In the present study, we have conducted in-situ high-temperature electron microscopic (HRTEM: High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy) observations of the growth process of decagonal quasicrystals to elucidate the growth mechanism. The growth processes of a decagonal quasicrystal of Al70.8Ni19.7Co9.5were observed by HRTEM in the temperature range 1073-1173K. Tiling patterns with edge length of about 2nm were constructed from a series of HRTEM images. They were analysed in the framework of the projection method. Here, we followed the procedures in our previous work [2]. We have already reported the results of some observations and analyses elsewhere [3]. However, the growth processes of them were on a small scale, and the results were indefinite. Recently, we have succeeded in observing a growth process on a massive scale. In this paper, we present the results of this observation and subsequent analyses, and discuss the growth mechanism of the quasicrystal.

The aim of the present article is to investigate the meaning of the signs in Persian translation of Heart of Darkness. To reach the desired goal, the researcher has used social semiotics and Peirce’s triadic sign model as the theoretical framework. In the current study, Peirce semiotics has been used for detecting signs. After detection 50 signs, the researcher used Peirce’s triadic sign model for analyzing the translation of each sign. The researcher decoded the signs to identify their components and analyzed them in social semiotic level to clarify whether they have the same impression on the Persian version of Heart of Darkness as their English source or not. After performing data analysis, it was cleared that 37 signs (out of 50) in the corpus of the study have the same effect and meaning in the target text as what they have in the source text.

Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) attempts to describe how people perform tasks: the cues and patterns they use, their inferences and strategies, mental models, and other related topics. It differs from behavioral task analyses that seek to enumerate the steps that must be followed without examining the expertise needed to perform critical steps. Therefore, CTA provides a more in-depth picture, which complements the broader and more comprehensive behavioral task analysis. A CTA usually consists of five steps: Preparation, Knowledge Elicitation, Data Analysis, Knowledge Representation, and Application. The applications of CTA can take a number of forms, such as training, system design, personnel selection, and market research.
