The tradition of using herbal drugs and herbal remedies for treating human ailments is very old. From last few years, the demand of herbal remedies has been increased. Myristica fragrans Houtt, commonly known as nutmeg, is a very common spice, which is used around the world. It is described in almost each medicine system such as Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and folk system. It has wide range of fixed oils and essential oils in it for example myristicin, safrole, myristic acid, trimyristicin, eugenol, elimicin and meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid. Myristica fragrans Houttis well considered medicinal plant for its extraordinary properties like aphrodisiac, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer etc. The review aim is to provide data/information related to medicinal herbal plant called Myristica fragrans such as its phytomedicinal value in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and folk system, its therapeutic uses and associated toxicity.

Plants are an important source of natural products and they play a vital role in the field of medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical science. Traditional medicines have been practiced and used for thousands of years, mostly in Asian countries, where plants are the main sources of medicine. Houttuynia cordata, a herb that belongs to the family Saururaceae, has a wide range of pharmacological activities and is used traditionally in conditions like anisolobis sores, heatstroke, lung carbuncles, malaria, scrotal abscess, tonsillitis, salammoniac poison and has also been widely accepted to possess anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-purulent activity. Moreover, it is one of the herbs that was recognized during pandemic outbreaks, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS CoV) in China, virulent Newcastle Disease Virus (VNDV) in Java (Indonesia) and Newcastle (England). In this review, we briefly discuss the role of H. cordata as an anti-viral agent and the possibility of developing a dosage form against Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19).

Abstract: The use of herbal remedies for medicinal purposes is becoming more popular around the world. As a result, plants have become viable treatment options for a variety of diseases. Garcinia kola (bitter kola) is a perennially grown plant in the Guttiferae family that has been evaluated and reported to have numerous health-promoting properties. Kolaviron is a biflavanoid and major phytochemical found in Garcinia kola that includes Garcinia Biflavanoid-1 (GB-1), kolaflavanone, and Garcinia Biflavanoid-2 (GB-2). It is obtained as a fraction extracted from Garcinia kola. Kolaviron's pharmacological properties include anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, ameliorative, anti-asthmatic, anti-cancer, anti-malarial, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-atherogenic, neuroprotective, anti-diabetic, and anti-amnesic properties. Kolaviron is recommended for use in clinical settings because it has been shown to have a high therapeutic efficacy in clinical trials. The purpose of this review is to assess the therapeutic efficacy of kolaviron.

Jeeraka, commonly known as cumin (Cuminum cyminum Linn.) (Family: Umbelliferae), is a popular herbal plant in traditional ayurvedic medicine, which has since long used as antioxidant, gastric stimulant, anti-flatulence, anti-diarrheal, sprue, anthelmintic, galactagogue, diuretic, astringent, carminative. This plant is pharmacologically and clinically evaluated for various activities like antioxidant, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, hepato-protective, and anti-inflammatory. It is promulgated to possess a wide range of many phytochemical constituents. The current review is presented to give a comprehensive account of all anti-cancer activities of cumin. It will be helpful to create interest towards cumin and may be useful in developing new and economical anti-cancer formulations with more therapeutic value. The part used of the selected plant is seed. As per retrospective review cumin seed, its essential oil, ethanoic extract and 1­(2­Ethyl, 6­Heptyl) Phenol (EHP), a biologically active compound formerly extracted by benzene are found having anti-cancer activity against 13 different cell lines of various origins and 6 animal models. Also, it can be used as chemopreventive ingredient in the herbal anti-cancer formulation. Total 8 research articles, peer viewed research papers, abstracts and classical texts were reviewed.

The closely related genera Liriope and Ophiopogon (Asparagaceae), collectively known in English as liriopogons, have similar therapeutic uses in treating cough, rheumatoid arthritis, and cleaning heat. The main aim of this review is to understand the current phytochemical and pharmacological knowledge including an assessment of the quality of the scientific evidence. A literature search was conducted in line with PRISMA guidelines, by retrieving available information up to 2020 from five online resources. The bioactive metabolites of liriopogons include steroidal saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, organic acids, phenols. Cardiovascular protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, anti-viral, anti-acute myeloid leukemia and hepatoprotective effects have been at the center of attention. From a toxicological perspective Ophiopogon japonicus seems to be safe. Some problems with the quality of the pharmacological evidence stand out including the application of excessive dose level and methodological problems in the design. Additionally, a reasonable link between local/traditional uses and pharmacological assessment is often vague or not reflected in the text. Future researches on liriopogons are required to use rigorous scientific approaches in research on evidence-based natural products for the future benefits of patients.

Curcumin, the main bioactive compound found in turmeric rhizomes, has a wide variety of applications in the clinical field that is why it attracts researchers from all over the world. While there are various studies on curcumin extraction and quantification, comparison of curcumin content according to the soil profile and cultivation period has not been performed yet in our knowledge. Curcumin to be a genuine natural product having impressive anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, treating a wide range of diseases. Curcumin is a special gift to humans given by mother-nature to help them curing many diseases. Turmeric, the plant containing a significant amount of this molecule, has been used for many centuries as a traditional medicine to cure skin problems, digestive issues, as painkiller, and much more. From the past two centuries, scientists found many applications of this molecule in the clinical field. There are still many properties of this wonder drug that need to be discovered. However, the obstacle in this track is difficulty in extracting the pure and high amounts of curcumin from turmeric rhizomes. For this reason, many researchers have searched about many techniques to extract curcumin from turmeric rhizomes, of which ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry has been found very efficient. The review will assist the researchers to discover and choose the plant to develop adequate medicine for establishing cost-effective treatments.

As the world scrambles to find a cure for COVID-19, Medical research network around the world is trying to find out treatment against the novel corona virus infection. In this pandemic condition there is a need for herbal remedies to boost the innate and acquired immunity to fight against corona virus. There are other certain ways to boost the “Immune System” such as active lifestyle, healthy diet, physical exercise, relaxation and sound sleep. Home remedies can be played a vital role as immunity modulator. Ayurveda treatises have described several herbal drugs which are used as different home remedies and are assume to be effective in COVID-19 therapeutics and immunity modulator as a preventive solution. That’s why in this present study, an challenge is made to review such herbal drugs and identify its immune modulator effect against corona virus. Tulsi, Ginger, Clove, Dalchini, Turmeric, Garlic, Marich are most effective herbal drugs used as a home remedies to improve the immunity level naturally with speedy recovery in COVID-19 cases.

Flavonoids are phytochemical compounds found in a variety of plants, fruits, vegetables, leaves, and barks, it offers a wide range of health benefits. Quercetin is a polyphenolic flavonoid that is found in onions, apples, berries, broccoli, grapes, nuts, cherries and many other food products. Pharmacologically, quercetin has been examined for various disorders and is reported to possess the ability to prevent as well as treat them. It possesses anti-oxidant, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer activity as well. Developing suitable formulation for the delivery of quercetin to specific site leads to better compliance and effective treatment of the disease. This review article highlights the beneficiary activities exhibited by quercetin along with the mechanism behind its activity, followed by reporting the different quercetin formulations developed in last few years.

Since ancient times, coffee has been one of the widely consumed beverages all over the world. It is renowned for its refreshing, body stimulating effect and unique taste. It belongs to the genus Coffea, class Dicotyledoneae, order Rubiales and family Rubiaceae. Coffee is a natural complex chemical mixture constituted of several compounds. It is accountable for numerous bioactivities and a number of compounds exhibit these effects. Some of the significant bioactivities documented are anti-oxidant, anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic and anti-obesity properties. The varying constituents of coffee responsible for the chemo-protective effects are mainly polyphenols including chlorogenic acids and their degradation products. Others include caffeine, diterpenoid alcohols such as kahweol, cafestol and other phenolics. Coffee has been reported to exhibit both protective and adverse effects on various body systems such as skeletal (bone), reproductive, nervous and cardiovascular systems; homocysteine and cholesterol levels and so on. The present review provides an overview of the coffee and its constituents; and their relationship with various diseases.  Recent investigations on its health benefits, with focus on their anti-cancer, anti-obesity properties and effect on cardiovascular diseases have also been discussed.

Mango is one of the choicest fruits in the world because of its good flavour, attractive colour and fruity fragrance. It belongs to family Anacardiaceae having wide range of varieties and health benefits. It grows in tropical region and has good nutritional profile. Innumerable researches have been done around the world that demonstrated diversified nutritional and pharmacological benefits of Mangifera indica Linn. It has particular composition of nutrients and phytochemicals. Different parts of mango trees have different wide ranges of benefits. The flower, seeds, leaves, bark, raw as well as ripe fruits provide extensive variety of pharmacological, medicinal and many health benefits. In addition to the higher values of macronutrients as well as micronutrients, mangoes have a wide range of bioactive compounds present in different portions of plant for example, the primary active constituent present in mango is mangiferin. In this review article we reviewed a number of beneficial characteristics of mango including its antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, gastric health, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities.
