The study was conducted in Basrah University – veterinary medicine college, used about (60) sixty male rats divided into two groups randomly, control group and nicotine treated group with 0.5 mg / kg / BW, the result showed no significant difference in growth rats compared to control group also significant increase of liver enzymes compared to the control groups.

This study was designed to examine the therapeutic effect of honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) venom in piglets with bacterial diarrhea. Comparison between bee venom- and drug-treated groups was our main concern in the present study. Preweaning piglets were assigned to treated and non-treated control groups. In the treated group, 47 piglets were acupunctured with the worker honeybee once a day for three consecutive days. Two acupoints, GV-1 (Jiao-chao) and ST-25 (Hai-men), were selected for apitherapy. In the control group, 44 piglets were intramuscularly injected with a standard dose of a known antibacterial drug, colistin sulfate (300,000 IU/kg of body weight), and an antidiarrheal drug (berberine, 2 ml/kg) once a day for three consecutive days. At post-treatment, 90.9% of the control piglets and 93.6% of piglets in the treated group recovered from bacterial diarrhea. Bee acupuncture therapy did not show any side effects such as allergy, intoxication, hemorrhage or infection. It is concluded that bee venom therapy was effective in controlling bacterial diarrhea in preweaning piglets.

Throughout the history of man, traditional and herbal method of treatment of diseases has been used without considering the dose effect. Therefore, this present study is an attempt on investigating the effect of different doses of Annona squamosa methanolic leaf extract on male wistar Rats especially the delicate organs. The work involves oral administration of different doses (10, 100, 1000, 1600, 2900, 5000 mg/kg body weight) of the extract to groups of rats according to Lorkes method. The animals were monitored for 30 days at every 24 hours interval in order to find the median lethal dose (LD50) of the extract. Internal organ-body weight ratios (OBR) of animals in the test groups were determined and compared with those of the control group. LD50 was found to be greater than 5000mg/kg body weight without any significant decrease (p>0.05) in body weight. Biochemical analysis of Aspartate amino transferase (AST), Alanine amino transferase (ALT), Albumin and globulin of animals administered with extract showed no significant difference compared to the control groups (p>0.05) but concentration of Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) indicated obvious changes in the treated groups compared to the control groups (p<0.05). Histopathology of the kidney revealed some inflammation at 1000, 1600, and 5000 mg/kg body weight. The implications of using this extract within safe doses in traditional medicine is hereby discussed

The administration of calcium channel blockers has been associated with gingival overgrowth. However, there are few studies in humans or animals that evaluated the effect of diltiazem on gingival tissues. The present study assessed the influence of diltiazem, at different dosages and treatment duration, on gingival tissues of rats, using clinical, histological and histometric analyses. Eighty young male rats were separated into eight groups according to the dosage and duration of treatment. Rats were treated for 20 or 40 days with a daily subcutaneous injection of 5, 20 or 50 mg/kg of body weight of diltiazem. The results confirmed that diltiazem did not induce gingival overgrowth in rats. For all animals, the evaluation did not show gingival alterations regardless of the dosages and periods of treatment. The histometric analysis showed no significant change in the area of epithelium and connective tissues, although after 40 days of treatment a decrease in the area of connective tissue was observed, without statistically significant difference from control groups. Within the limits of this study, we suggest that diltiazem did not induce gingival overgrowth.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that often affected fertility health, specifically in men. Gynura procumbens (G. procumbens) has been used as traditional medicine due to its ability in treating various types of illness. Hence, this study was carried out to determine the potential beneficial effect of G. procumbens as anti-hyperglycaemia, pro-fertility and libido agent towards diabetes-induced male rats. A total of 42 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into six groups; normal, negative, and positive control, and three treated groups of different dosages of G. procumbens aqueous extract (GPAE); 150 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg. Each group was given treatment via oral gavage for seven consecutive days. The rats were sacrificed on day eighth for further analysis. The fasting blood glucose (FBG) level in all GPAE treated group showed significant decrease, and 450 mg/kg treated group showed significant reduction to a normal blood glucose level compared to all groups. There were significant increases in the sperm quality of GPAE treated groups after seven days of treatment compared to the negative and positive control group, specifically in 450 mg/kg treated group. Testis histology showed that GPAE treated groups produced a significant result whereby the seminiferous tubules were seen packed with sperm and successive stage of spermatogenesis were shown compared to control groups. Hormone analysis suggested that the luteneizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone hormone of the treated groups were elevated after seven days of treatment compared to the negative and positive control groups. Libido analysis of seven days treatment showed that GPAE treated groups, significantly improved in 450 mg/kg dose compared to other groups, with the highest number of mounting frequency and shortest mounting latency. Fertility test revealed a significant increase in number of implantation sites produced in GPAE treated groups compared to positive and negative control groups. In conclusion, GPAE exhibited a potential beneficial effect as an anti-diabetic and also as fertility agent in diabetic-induced male rats.

Severe declines of the mountain yellow-legged frog (MYLF, Rana muscosa) led to establishment of a captive population at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. With less than 200 adults estimated to remain in the wild, the Institute’s MYLF colony currently holds approximately 30% of the entire gene pool. Simulating natural seasonality by artificial brumation and manipulation of atmospheric temperature and light cycles is an integral part of this species’ management in captivity. However, over 5 years, the number of females that have oviposited has decreased from 80% in 2011 to 28% in 2014. It is unclear if changes in reproduction are related to husbandry or a lack of information regarding the natural reproductive cycles of these animals. Therefore, we examined the effects of hormone treatments on reproduction in the MYLF captive population. Prior to breeding, 21 females and 18 males were evenly assigned to either a control group (IP injection of PBS) or hormone-treated group [IP injection of gonadotropic releasing hormone (GnRH, D-Ala6, des-GLy10 ethylamide LHRH derivative) at 0.4 µg g–1 of body weight and metoclopramide (dopamine inhibitor) at 10 µg g–1 of body weight]. Males and females were housed in groups of 3 males and 3 females and allowed to choose their mate. Once a male had amplexed a female they were housed in pairs until oviposition occurred or until males ceased amplexus. Responses recorded during this study included amplexus, spermiation, oviposition, and embryonic cleavage. There was no significant difference in the number of eggs deposited by females treated with hormones and untreated controls (P = 0.1949) nor were there any differences between groups in the number of embryos that cleaved (P = 0.673) or survived to tadpole stage (P = 0.629). No significant differences were detected between the numbers of males that amplexed in the control or treated groups (P = 0.1120). Urine collected from 10/18 amplexed males (7 hormone-treated and 3 controls) indicated that 57% percent of hormone-treated males and 67% of control males were spermiating at the time of collection. Therefore, hormone treatments did not increase the number of eggs oviposited or the number of males spermiating or amplexing. Closer analysis of individual female reproductive histories indicated that 48% of captive female MYLF oviposited just once in 5 years, 40% in 2 consecutive years, 8% oviposited eggs in 2 consecutive years, skipped a year, and then oviposited again in 2 consecutive years, and 4% oviposited in 3 consecutive years. The number of females ovipositing in 2015 was significantly higher than 2012 (P = 0.0002), 2013 (P = 0.0001), and 2014 (P = 0.0026), but not 2011 (P = 0.0885), suggesting breeding may not occur annually in females. Understanding the breeding cycles of MYLF females will enable managers to determine if and when hormone administration is efficacious in captive amphibian breeding populations.

In 1978 and 1979, spring blackbird flocks composed of Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, and Brown-headed Cowbirds reached a maximum of 5000 birds in the study area. Red-winged Blackbirds accounted for a majority of birds in these flocks. Flocking lasted approximately 1 month leaving ample time for a field application of the chemosterilization method. Three sets of experiments were used to examine the feasibility and the potential of the sterile male method to reduce productivity of Red-winged Blackbird populations. Birds treated by gavage at a rate of 3.1 mg thiotepa/kg body weight had a hatching rate of 32.7%. This was significantly lower than that found in control groups (79.8 to 90.0%). The second treatment, which consisted of feeding redwings with treated corn for 4 consecutive days, thus causing a mean daily ingestion of 3.58 mg thiotepa/kg body weight, produced a hatching rate of 55.6%. The third treatment, like the second but lasting 10 consecutive days, resulted in a daily ingestion by blackbirds of 4.01 mg thiotepa/kg body weight. The hatching rate of this latter group was 46.3% and was significantly lower than that of the control group. Red-winged Blackbird testes weight remained stationary in the treated group for over 1 month after the beginning of the treatment. These experiments demonstrate that the sterilization approach in field conditions offers hope of reducing populations causing crop damage if proper field application methods are developed.

The aim of this research is to know the influence of anti mosquito electric gas that consisted Allethrin to the weight and colour of the rats liver. This research used an experimental method with the post test only  control group design.  The subject of this research is male rats weight of 150 grams each and total there was 24 rats that were divided to 4 groups. The first one, the  control groups (PO) was not given any of the gas, the second one, group 1 (P1) was given the gas for 4 hours everday, the third one, group  2 (P2), was given for 6 hours and last, group 3  (P3) was given 8 hours everyday. After later, on  30 Th day, the rats were terminated and being put in a surgery to remove their liver. This data was analyzed using SPPS for windows version 16. To see the differences in weight between the groups, it was analyzed using anova, and  to obtain the discoloration of the rats liver was analyzed using Kruskal Wallis Test. From the statistic tests, it show that there is significant difference in weight and color of liver in the group that α ≤ 0,05. According Anova Test, it shows that there is a significant difference α = 0,034 and from Kruskal Wallis test α = 0,013. In the conclusion anti mosquito electric gas that consist Allethrin affects the weight and the color of rats liver.

The purpose of the experiment is an investigate the association of walnut oil with lipid profiles, glucose as well as total proteins and assessment its side effect on some sensitive organs such as the liver and spleen tissues. The experiment divided into two main groups are treated group with walnut oil and the control group, where the former divided into two subgroups 0.25 and 0.5 ml of oil per each. We found a statistically non-significant difference between treated and control groups (for total protein, lipid profile, and glucose). There was no change in total protein, but cholesterol decreased by 0.25 ml but a little increased by 0.5 ml. HDL was increased for the treated group. While on 0.25 ml LDL decreased in treated animals, on another hand no change for 0.5 ml. Also, no change for VLDL between treated and control. The only triglyceride was increased but non-significant for the treated group compared with the control. Both doses decreased in treated animals for glucose. We also found an increase in whole-body weight and on sensitive organs such as the liver and spleen. Even no change in a histological study for the mentioned organs. The conclusion: By walnut oil, all parameters have changed despite the treated group was normal without any induced diseases. So, recommended the researchers induce the disorders in the liver and assessment the extracted oil on the lipid profile.

Background: Regulation of electrolytes and body fluids are essential for maintaining the body homeostasis. Kidney plays an important role for these regulations. Higher doses of drugs, toxins, infectious agents, chemicals etc. can causes kidney damage and ultimately electrolytes disturbances can be occurred. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herbal plant may have some role on serum electrolytes balance.Objective: To observe the effects of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root on serum electrolytes against gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats.Methods: This experimental study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Sir Salimullah Medical College SSMC), Dhaka from 1st July 2010 to 30th June 2011. A total number of 35 Wistar albino rats, age from 90 to 120 days, weighing between 150 to 200 grams were selected for the study. After acclimatization for 14 days, they were divided into control group and experimental group. Control group was again subdivided into baseline control, (10 rats) and gentamicin treated control group, (10 rats). Again, experimental group (gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment) consisted of 15 rats. All groups of animals received basal diet for 22 consecutive days. In addition to this, gentamicin treated control group also received gentamicin subcutaneously (100mg /kg body weight/day) for the last eight (15th to 22nd day) consecutive days. Again, gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment received ashwagandha root extract (500mg/kg body weight/day, orally) for 22 consecutive days and gentamicin subcutaneously (100mg/kg body weight /day) for last eight (15th to 22nd day) days. All the animals were sacrificed on 23rd day. Then blood samples were collected and kidney weight was measured. For assessment of kidney function, some serum electrolyte levels e,g. serum sodium, potassium and chloride ion levels were estimated by ion selective electrode (ISE) electrolyte auto analyzer method, by using Biolyte 2000 auto analyzer. However, body weight and kidney weight of the animals were measured to assess the nephrotoxicity in these groups of animals. All these tests were done in the laboratory of Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, SSMC. Statistical analysis was done by one way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests as applicable.Results: The serum sodium and chloride ion levels were almost similar in all the groups and the differences were not statistically significant. The mean serum levels of potassium ion were significantly (p<0.001) lower in gentamicin treated group and (p<0.05) in gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment in comparison to that of baseline control group. But this level of gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment was significantly (p<0.01) higher than that of gentamicin treated group. Initial body weight was almost similar and no significant difference of this value was observed among the groups. Whereas, the final body weight was significantly (p<0.001) lower in gentamicin treated control group and in gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment than that of baseline  control group. Again this level of gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment was significantly (p<0.05) higher in comparison to that of gentamicin treated control group. The kidney weight was significantly (p<0.01) higher in gentamicin treated control group when compared to that of baseline control and gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment. Whereas, kidney weight of gentamicin treated group after ashwagandha treatment and of baseline control group was almost similar and showed no statistically significant difference of this value between this two groups.Conclusion: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) root extract may have some role in maintaining some of the serum electrolyte levels within normal limit, which indicates its nephroprotective effects against gentamicin induced toxicity. Backgound: Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) occurs when the intake and free fatty acid synthesis occurs more frequently than its oxidation and resecretion in the blood. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that can boost the synthesis of endogenous antioxidants in the body, suppress the inflammatory response and inhibit the formation of steatosis.Objective: To analyze the effect of melatonin supplementation in reducing body weight andTNF-α levels in male Wistar rats were fed by waste cooking oil.Methods: True experimental studyusing post-test only control group design. This study was done on 18 male wistar rats were divided into 3 groups : the positive control group (P0) was administrated waste cooking oil, the treated group 1 (P1) was administrated waste cooking oil and 5mg/kgBW melatonin, and the treated group 2 (P2) was administrated waste cooking oil and 10mg/kgBW melatonin for 28 days.Data analysis using One Way ANOVA test and followed by Tukey test to determine the most effective dose of melatonin.Results: There was significant difference in body weightbetween P2group and K0 group (p=0,019) with the mean body weight difference was 19,167g lower than K0 group. There was no difference in TNF-α levels between the three groups (p=0,155). Conclusion: Melatonin dose of 10mg/kgBWloses body weight male Wistar rats have given by waste cooking oil for 28 days, but does not reduce TNF-α levels.
